Volunteers honored at Salvation Army dinnerA wonderful group of giving

and caring people gathered for the Salvation Army’s annual Civic Appreciation Dinner on May 9 at Cross Creek Country Club. Major Michael Rodgers welcomed everyone followed by an annual report made by Advisory Board Chair Sharon Reid.

New officers were installed with Emily Loftis named chairman. Bill Inman is vice chairman, Pinky Shelton, treasurer and Ellen Woltz, secretary.

Major Rick Raymer, divi-sional secretary from Char-lotte, presented Wanda McAlexander with a Lifetime Membership Award. He noted that Wanda was asked to join the advisory board in 1981 after calling on local busi-nesses and raising several thousand dol-lars for the Empty Stocking fund. She has faithfully served for 31 years. She served as board chair in 2004, vice chair in 2002 and 2003, and served on the Christmas com-mittee for 15 years. She has served on the chair of the Family Store committee for 15 years and has donated time and money to improve and promote the store. It is truly her passion.

Other community accomplishements include: past president of the Mount Airy

Lady Lions, past secretary of Mount Airy Altrusa Club, for-mer member of the Mount Airy Medical Ministries board of di-rectors, former volunteer with the Surry Regional Medcial Center and Mount Airy Mu-seum of Regional History and current member of the Grace Moravian Church evangelism committee.

Raymer added, “Wanda is a dedicated board member and a true joy to be around. She is not only an asset to this community but truly invaluable to the min-istry of the Salvation Army. We are proud to bestow up her the

honor of Lifetime Membership.”McAlexander is the third person to re-

ceive a Life Membership. The others are Emily Smith and John Hamilton.

Among board members attending the meeting were Earlene Epperson, Bill In-man, Steve Talley, James Kemp, Sylvia Har-old and Kitty Seivers.

It was reported that this past holiday sea-son, 6,077 persons in the area were assisted by the Salvation Army.. Her in Surry, Car-roll, Patrick and Allegheny counties, 1,215 persons were visited by the community care Ministries members, a group of dedi-cated bvolunteers who serve special needs individuals.

Above, Jack and Hazel Fallis celebrate their birthdays this month. At right, The couple operated the irst Bed and Break-fast at their home on West Pine Street.

Jack and Hazel Belle Fallis are cel-ebrating their birthdays this month - Hazel’s is May 25 and Jack’s is May 26. They met at a square dance on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and have been married 51 years.

An Alabama girl, Hazel was a registered nurse working as oper-ating room supervisor in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi for the

Veterans Administration. She later worked in several nursing homes before retiring in 1987 when she enjoyed working with Hospice of Surry County.

Hubby, Jack, went from high school to the sports department of a metropolitan newspaper and stayed for nine years. His career took a sharp left turn when he drove

a $25 car to Wisconsin and Colo-rado and worked several seasons at dude ranches. Then down to Biloxi, Miss., he hooked on with a country club and finally wound up as a real estate broker.

His most enjoyable job though was spent here in Mount Airy as a DJ with Radio Station WPAQ where Ralph Epperson gave him the

radio moniker of “Uncle Jack”. Fal-lis played “Big Band” music of the 1940s and 50s.

In the early 1990s, Jack and Hazel opened the first Bed and Breakfast in Mount Airy and operated The Mayberry B&B at 329 W. Pine Street, for 13 years.

Hazel now resides at Central Continuing Care and Jack visits

with her each day. They have two daughters, who live out-of-state, but they expect them to come down and visit soon. “We also have three granddaughters and three grand-sons,” he added with a smile.

If you happen to run into Jack and Hazel, wish them a happy birthday. Better still, stop by to visit or send them a card.

The scholarship is based on outstanding qualities in academics and leadership. Dylan will attend the Uni-versity of North Carolina, Chapel Hilll, in the fall. The award was presented by Pam Yokley.

Three Women’s Clubs receive awards

at annual convention in GreensboroWomen’s Clubs receive

state awards at annual con-vention in Greensboro All three Mount Airy Women’s Clubs received award rec-ognition during the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of North Carolina 110th An-nual Convention on April 25-28 at the Embassy Suites Greensboro-Airport in Greensboro. More than 300 club women from across the state met for the purpose of honoring women in North Carolina, celebrating the year’s accomplishments, and conducting annual business. Sharon Greeson, 2010-2012 GFWC-NC President pre-sided. GFWC-NC is a mem-ber state federation of the GFWC, one of the largest non-denominational wom-en’s volunteer organizations in the world.

During the Wednesday evening 11th annual Women of Achievement Banquet, 13 women from North Carolina received the 2012 Women of Achievement award.The Honorable Sarah Stevens, a resident of Mount Airy and a NC House of Representatives member, was one the recipi-ents.

At the Awards Luncheon on Saturday, each of the nine districts of the GFWC-NC was recognized for it con-tributions and accomplish-ments. The guest speaker was Dr. Gloria Houston, an educator and author of multi-award winning, best-selling books for young readers, as well as a writer of textbooks and other reading materials.

Those attending from the Mount Airy Junior Woman’s Club were, President, Alisha Southern, Christie Speer and Shannon Badgett. The Mount Airy Juniors took the silver award in the large club category for International Af-fairs—Collaboration.

The Mount Airy Woman’s Club won the Drug Aware-ness Award under the De-partment of Home Life and the runner-up award for the GFWC President and Junior Director Special Project, Lit-

eracy. Members attending from the Mount Airy Wom-an’s Club were Wendy Car-riker, President and Diana Liinangi.

The Women’s League of Mount Airy won four silver awards and two runner-up awards in the small club category: Home Life Com-munity Service Program—Collaboration; Home Life Community Service Pro-gram—Partnership; Conser-vation Community Service Program—Collaboration; and runner-up for Public Is-sues Community Service Program—Partnership and runner-up for Arts Commu-nity Service Program—Col-laboration. Those attending from the Women’s League were Mary Planer, president; Ruth McBride, vice-presi-dent; Bennie Burton, trea-surer; Betty Jones, secretary; Sue Cooke, past-president; and Pam Harrill.

During the convention there were individual recog-nitions and awards and guest speakers on Prevent Child Abuse and Literacy.Honor-ary Lifetime Memberships were awarded and Shannon Lane, District 4 President of the Pilot Mountain Women’s Club, was one of the recipi-ents.

Concluding the 110th con-vention was the Installation Banquet held Saturday eve-ning. Mount Airy resident and volunteer Wendy Carrier was installed as the 2012-2014 President of GFWC-NC. Shannon Lane of the Pi-lot Mountain Woman’s Club was installed as correspond-ing secretary.

GFWC is an international organization of community-based women’s clubs that has been working for over 100 year to address the most pressing needs of their com-munities and the world.It is headquartered in Wash-ington, DC. GFWC-NC is a member state, founded in 1902 and headquartered in Raleigh and has approxi-mately 150 clubs and 4,000 members.

Subway Dude visits Tharrington students

The Subway Dude of the Mount Airy Subway Res-taurants visits Mrs. Mo-steller’s kindergarten class at B.H. Tharrington Primary School on May 4. Each stu-dent became a sandwich artist and made their own sandwich. Subway Dude spoke on nutrition and the importance of eating fresh vegetables. Each student received a Subway shirt and had their picture taken with the Subway Dude.

Central Methodist Child Center held a trike-a-thon for St. Jude Children’s Re-search Hospital April 21 and raised more than $2,000. Corder relatives gather for reunion

At right, The decendants of the late Charlie and Ida Corder, which span four generations, met for their family reunion on a recent Sunday afternoon. The event location was Mount Airy Church of Christ. Sons of Mr. and Mrs. Corder are Billy Corder and the late Bruce Corder. Eight new family mem-bers have been born since the last reunion. Much of the afternoon was spent eating and snapping photos of all the little ones.
