    Formation of R. E. M.

Michael Stipe and Peter Buck met in January 1980. in store where

Peter worked. They were listening the same kind of music, and

Michael was buying the same CD-s that Peter kept for himself.

Micheal and Peter soon met Mike Mills and Bill Berry on the

University of Georgia. Mike and Bill played music together since

high school. The quartet agreed to play some songs together. There

was never some plan behind all of it. They had no name when they

played their first show on April 5th, 1980. They considered names

like Twisted Kites, Cans of Piss and Negro Wives. Eventually,

Michael randomly took letters from the dictionary, and the letters

were R, E and M. So the band called themselves R. E. M. The banddropped out of school to focus on developing their group.

Records, and they singed the contract in May 1982.

    I. R. S. released Chronic Town in August 1982.

On 1992. Grammy Awards, the band got three awards: Best

Alternative Music Album, and two awards ofr Losing my Religion ,

Best Short Form Music Video and Best Pop Performance by a Duo

    or Group with Vocal.

In 1992. R. E. M. released the album Automatic for the People.

About ten millions of copies were sold worldwide.

Band did not make a tout for Out of Time or for Automatic for the

People. There were some serious rumors that there is no tour

because Micheal Stipe is dying. Reason for that was his phyisical

appearance. Band automatically said that it is not true. Michael

shaved his head because he is a buddhist, not because he is

    deathly ill.

    Billys departure

In 1997. band was hit with terrible thing. Bill Berry decided to leave

the band. Reason for that were discussions with Mike Mills. Micheal

Stipe, Mike Mills and Peter Buck agreed to continiue as a three-

piece with Bills blessing. That was a reason to go in a different way.

Michael Stipe said: For me, Mike, and Peter, as R.E.M., are we still

R.E.M.? I guess a three-legged dog is still a dog. It just has to learnto run differently.

They took Joey Waronker as a new drummer for the tour. They had

an emerancy meeting, and they agreed to continiue work as a group.

In 1998. they released album Up. The album was a failure. Only

    R. E. M.s style

    All band mambers always

    paritcipaded in style in which

Michael Stipe will write a song.

But, Michael never wrote a song

    about something he didnt like.

    Their musical influences were

and still are: The Byrds, Johnny

    Marr, The Smiths, Paul

    McCartney, Chris Squire.

    They are described like minor

    key, mid-tempo, enigmatic,semi-folk-rock-balladish thing,

and they agree with that. They

say that it is mostly true.

    A change in a sound (1999-2001)

After 1997-1998 tour, band was near splitting up. In 1999. they

moved back to the studio. Tension was high during this period. Band

members had diffrent ideas for Radioheads future. Though, Thom

was the one writting the songs, they influenced him to write more

    abstract songs.

After 18 months of studio work, they finally released their fourthalbum Kid A in October 2000. Kid A got on a top of Billboard list.

In early 2001, Kid A recieved a Grammy Award for Best Alternative

Album and a nominatnion for the Best Album of the Year. Kid A

had a minimalist style, with influence of electronic music, strings and

    jazz.

    Radioheads style

In the begining there musical influence were: Elvis Costello, Queen,

Joy Divison, Magazine, Pixies, The Smiths, R. E. M. and Sonic

Youth. It was like that for their first two albums. For OK Computer

they showed interests in electronic music, and their musical influence

were: Massive Attack, DJ Shadow, Miles Davies, Ennio Morricone,

The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Krzysztof Penderecki and Pink Floyd.Their musical influence for Kid A and Amnesiac were: Autechre,

Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher, Charles Mingus,

Alice Coltrane, Miles Davies, Olivier Messiaen.

Their musical influence for Hail to the Thief were: The Beatles, The

    Rolling Stones and Neil Young.

For In Rainbows they created a whole new sound, making it a newway in music without any musical influence. In In Rainbows they

showed everything that music doesnt have, and if you ask me,

someone will have to make a new category in music for Radiohead!
