interact with exceedingly large

numbers of T4 lymphocytes

excessive amounts of cytokine IL-2

and the activation of self-reactive

T-lymphocytes

Staphylococcus aureus

Source of infection = reservoir (the origin from

which a host acquires the infection):

Human carriers, diseased persons

Transmission:

directly (contact with carriers or infected individual)

indirectly (contaminated surfaces or medical

equipment, food)

Staphylococci – resistant to drying (prolonged

survival), disinfectants, antimicrobials

Page 15: Prof. Beata Sobieszczańska · 2019-03-06 · Staphylococcus epidermidis Part of normal flora of the skin and anterior nares Important cause of infections from prosthetic implants

Routes of transmission of microorganisms to humans:

• person-to-person direct contact = direct contact with diseased person or carrier (touching, kissing, sexual intercourse etc.)

• air-borne route = inhalation of microorganisms spread to the air by infected individuals coughing or sneezing

• exposure to contaminated fomites (objects or materials that are likely to carry microorganisms) such as clothes, utensils, and furniture e.g. keyboard, cell-phones, pens, sharp objects – inhalation or puncture wounds

• by food or water = food-borne (undercooked or fresh food of animal origin, food contaminated by carriers, unwashed vegetables, unpasteurized milk etc.)

• vectors (insects) transmitting microorganisms from animals to humans or from human-to-human e.g. fleas, fly, mosquitoes, bugs
