Benoît Tarlant is one of Champagne’s thinking winemakers and is one of

the few Champenois still to vinify much of his wine in barrel. With a superb

domaine centred on Oeuilly in the Vallée de la Marne, Benoît has

top-quality Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay from which he

fashions an impressive range of wines. Réserve is a blend of equal

proportions of all three varieties whereas Tradition is over 90% black

grapes. Brut Nature Zéro is disgorged without the addition of any sugar, a

rare truly dry Champagne.

DOMAINE ROY The Roy family have been vignerons in the village of Fontenay, just to the

north of Chablis, for over 200 years. Today Claude Roy, together with his

daughter Karine and nephew David, farm 20 hectares of vines on the right

bank of the River Serein. They are one of the largest owners of the grands

crus including a magnificent 3.5 hectare plot in Bougros. They have only

recently begun to bottle a significant proportion of their harvest, having

previously sold a majority in bulk to the negociants.

DOMAINE SÉGUINOT-BORDET Jean-François Bordet can trace his family’s roots in Maligny back to 1590.

The estate lies on the right bank of the river Serein where the rich

Kimmeridgian soils give the wines the minerality so typical of great Chablis.

His unusual horizontal fermentation tanks give the wines more lees contact

during maturation, adding to the complexity of this beautiful, pure,

unoaked chardonnay.

One of the most historic domaines of the region, with a reputation for

producing a crisp, pure expression of Chablis. In 2014, the estate was sold

to the Nuits-based Maison Faiveley and the wines are now made by Olivier

Bailly, estate director, and Jérôme Flous, technical director of Faiveley.

SAMUEL BILLAUD

Samuel Billaud is one of Chablis’ finest winemakers. For over twenty years

he has been responsible for some of the best wines produced in Chablis,

He established his own winery in 2009 and, in 2014, his estate was greatly

extended when he recovered his share of the Billaud-Simon vines after the

family estate was sold to Faiveley. Samuel’s vines were hit by frost in 2016

and 2017 so yields were low but quality was high. His Bourgogne d’Or is a

wonderful collaboration with a viticulturalist further south in Burgundy who

provided some fantastic ripe grapes with which Samuel has crafted an

outstanding wine at a sensible price.

DOMAINE MILLET

Baudouin Millet and his brother Paterne took over the estate from their

father in 2002. Situated between Chablis and Tonnerre, the refurbished

winery is well equipped with modern pneumatic presses and stainless steel

vats. The wines undergo a full malolactic fermentation, after which they

remain on the lees for six months prior to bottling. The style is crisp and

fresh, with elegant, pure citrus fruits to the fore.

BURGUNDY - CÔTE DE BEAUNE

DOMAINE VINCENT ET FRANÇOIS JOUARD

Brothers Vincent and François (right) are the fifth generation to run the 11

hectare family domaine, but the first to bottle the wines themselves.

Situated in the heart of the village of Chassagne, the domaine is blessed

with a fine array of premiers and grands crus. Aged in 1/3 new oak barrels

for eleven months before bottling with only the lightest of fining and

filtration; the wines are elegant and restrained but with great depth and

concentration.

DOMAINE ALAIN CHAVY

Alain has bought an old house and built a new cellar on the south side of

Puligny. It is one of the few underground cellars in Puligny and the wines

develop more slowly in the cooler environment. Alain prefers crisp, mineral

wines with pure fruit flavours and less obvious oak.

DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVY

Jean-Louis makes a more forward, fruitier style of Puligny than his brother

Alain. Jean-Louis picks a day or two later so the grapes are riper and the

resulting wines are softer and rounder with lower acidity. The wines are

also bottled earlier, about fifteen months after the harvest. Jean-Louis has

recently introduced a few 350 litre demi-muids from Meursault-based

tonnellerie Damy to his cellar. This is a splendid source of ripe, fruity

Puligny, delicious relatively early but with the balance to age well in the

medium term.

Jacques Carillon’s cousin, Jean-Marc Pillot, has reduced the amount of

new oak that he uses in recent vintages. Long, cool fermentations

followed by 15 months ageing in cask give rich, intense, concentrated

wines with powerful aromas and opulent fruit on the palate. The

Chenevottes comes from sixty-year-old vines which produce wines with

great intensity and depth. All his wines show well when young but also

have sufficient acidity to age gracefully.

Jacques owns land in the prime vineyards of Puligny and Chassagne,

including four premiers crus and the grand cru Bienvenues-Bâtard-

Montrachet. All the wines are barrel-fermented in 20-35% new oak and

aged for twelve months in cask followed by six months in stainless steel

vats. The style remains that of classic white Burgundy, built to age, with a

winning combination of ripe fruit and thrilling acidity.

Gérard Thomas is supported by his daughters Anne and Isabelle at their

small estate at Saint Aubin, immediately behind Puligny and Chassagne-

Sylvain & Béatrice Bzikot own an impressive estate of 15 hectares in Puligny

-Montrachet. Sylvain’s grandfather arrived in Burgundy from Poland just

before the second world war and steadily built up the estate. The estate’s

delicious Bourgogne Chardonnay is made from vines within the commune

of Puligny but just too low on the slope to qualify for the Puligny-

Montrachet appellation. Fermented partly in barrel and partly in stainless

steel vats, it is a delicious white Burgundy that combines vibrant fruit with

the richness and minerality of a fine Puligny. Sylvain’s Puligny-Montrachet

in contrast is 100% fermented and aged in small French oak barrels and is

one of the best examples in the village.

Jean-Baptiste progressively took over from his father Michel in the 1990s

and has now installed himself in a brand new cellar next to his house in the

centre of Meursault. Like many domaines, Jean-Baptiste is now bottling

ageing in cask rather than twelve. This is now one of the appellation’s top

BURGUNDY - CÔTE DE BEAUNE

Since taking over his father’s estate in 1998, Vincent Latour’s wines have

been highly praised both in Burgundy and further afield. The hail of June

2014 resulted in low yields, half of the previous year, but the quality was

great producing some magnificent wines with excellent richness and

minerality.

DOMAINE HENRI DARNAT

In 2000 Henri and his wife Marion took over the family domaine which had

been established in the 19th Century and they now own 5 hectares of

organically farmed vineyards. Henri believes in picking at full ripeness and

is prepared to lose volume by waiting for the optimum moment. As a

result, he is often one of the last to finish harvesting in the village. This is a

delicious range of wines; full of ripe fruit balanced by crisp acidity.

The Girards are one of the oldest winemaking families in the village of

Savigny-Lès-Beaune and produce gloriously aromatic, fruity Savigny.

Jean-Jacques and his son Vincent use a combination of modern and

traditional techniques to produce wines of great purity and elegance.

The reds are delicious, accessible wines which are fantastic for drinking

when young but also have great potential for ageing.

Franck has been running this 12 hectare domaine based in the village of

Le Rochepot, just over the hill from St Aubin, since 2005. The vineyards are

worked organically and the grapes harvested by hand. A combination of

new and old oak is used to vinify a range of generous whites and reds that

offer tremendous value for money from some of the lesser-known villages

of the southern Côte de Beaune.

DOMAINE HENRI GOUGES

Subtle changes are afoot at this great Nuits domaine. Pierre Gouges’s son,

Grégory, is making his presence felt and since 2007 the construction of a

new cellar has enabled the wines to be vinified with less pumping. The

wines are racked later and the proportion of new oak has risen to over

20%. Overall, the wines retain their traditional ageing ability but are more

approachable when young. We are delighted to offer a selection of

older vintages that are now drinking superbly.

as organic and biodynamic. With lower yields and less interventionist

winemaking, quality has soared. The red wines are racked less often than

before and bottled later (18 months after the harvest). Up to 50% new oak

is used for the premiers and grands crus. This is now without doubt one of

the leading domaines of Gevrey-Chambertin.

nationale in Vosne and is now less cramped for space. The domaine owns

vines in a number of different climats, all of which are now vinified

separately and make for a fascinating tasting. The estate’s style remains

one of rich, ripe fruit allied to a healthy dose of new oak, a formula with

which Patrice’s father, Jacques, made his name in the 1980s and 90s and

which has stood the test of time.

Saumaize-Michelin is a 9.5 hectare domaine based in Vergisson, in the

heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. Owned by Roger and Christine

Saumaize, the estate has been fully biodynamic since 2005. The vines are

now naturally lower-yielding and disease-resistant, 40-45 years old on

average and are planted in a patchwork of marl resting on limestone

subsoil, resulting in wines with increased complexity. There are several

individual parcels, all of which are vinified separately. The vines are both

tended and harvested by hand. The wines are 100% barrel fermented

using only indigenous yeasts, with 10-25% new oak used for each vintage.
