The history of Moszna Castle

It isn’t easy to reconstruct the history of Moszna, as well as the one in Middle ages and that from the last century. The reason for such a state is a big number of owners, fire and mostly the II World War.

The name Moszna was recorded in 1687 as a Moschna which means bag, sack or in the topographic meaning valley or depression.

From the latest history we can get to know that Heinrich von Erdmansdorf sold the castle in 1866 to Hubert von Tiele- Winckler from Miechowice whose son Franz Hubert, was the inventor of the building of todays castle. It had to be rebuilt in 1896 because at night from 2nd to 3rd June it burnt down. In 1904, 1911, 1912 the German emperor came to Moszna for haunting and just for him the west wing was built.

After the death of Franz Hubert the castle belonged to his son Claus- Peter. Before I World War he spent the whole wealth and after his death he gave the castle to his cousins’ son. The family was living there till war. Then they moved to Germany. Until the end of the war Red Army stationed there. The history of the castle had been changing. It existed as a hospital for stressed people in 1972.

Nowadays the castle is in eclectic style. The basic features are asymmetry, irregular shape and hard to grasp composition support mainly on adding particular elements .Different hight of towers seem to be a very interesting feature. Every part of the palace is in another style which is really easy to notice. The central part between the two wings, is the smallest and very modest one. The east wing has got a lot of towers and interesting ornaments. The west wing has got smooth walls with bas- reliefs and three triangular peaks separated with cornices.

The park in Moszna

The park in Moszna is made in a landscape style which hasn't got permanent boundaries. The Park is directly joined with the surrounding fields, meadows and forests. Only the main part is geometric.

The part leads to the palace from the "gate of the gladiators" in shape of a red oak alley, through the avenue of the chestnut trees. The next avenue of chestnut trees has become a lime avenue and on its both sides there are symmetrical canals.

The old monument of Hebert von Tiele Winckler is placed opposite the castle on the way leading to the park premises. In the background there is the necropolis of the former owner.

Along the canals beautiful azaleas and rhododendrons are growing in different colors. On the east side of the lime avenue there is a pond with a picturesque island which is called Easter Island and on which Canadian Christmas trees are planted.

On the island we can go onto a bridge which is made in a chinese style. Rich and old stand which consists of native and egzotic species, creates wonderful sightseeing and ecological value.

The existing fleece is rich in a lotof species of plants, which makes this park more attractive. Extensive, life size of massive trees and open space produce favourable microclimat for the rest of the area in Moszna.

The Palace and the Park complex in Moszna is more valuable than all the buildings in the province. The regular and geometric garden which accompanies the eighteenth - century palace was modernized more quickly than the building itself.

The surviving documents in 1868 show that Hubert von Tiele Winckler took care of the aesthetics of the Park. Besides, the surface that was designed for the parking area was 100 acres. The oldest trans iconographic dates back 1909. It shows a garden salon, resembling the ground floors of the Renaissance Italian garden.

Page 9: Presentation 1

The park in Moszna

It was located in the place where todays swimming pool is. Looking at the lime avenue from the right side of the terrace there was a drive leading directly to the entry of the palace. In the existing park there used to be ”water way” leading to the surrounding ponds and canals which then connected in one water system let people admire the park from the boat and its interesting greenery particularly azaleas and rhododendrons in flowering time which is up to date.

The Feast of Blooming Azaleas in

MosznaIn spring time of each year in Moszna a „Feast

of Blooming Azaleas” is organised . Then here come hundreds of tourists to admire the fairytale castle, surrounded by all sorts of varieties of azaleas, which bloom beautifully during this period. You can listen to music as there are concerts of classical music both on the terrace and in one of the rooms of Moszna Castle.

The Stud and Racecourse

In 1948, the historic buildings of the estate of Count von Tiele-Winckler - Castle in the pre-war owner Moszna - have been transferred to the first 25 mares (race full English blood). The surviving mares came mainly from private farms of the Polish estates conducted before World War II on the territory of Greater Poland in the east and the farm buildings of the palace in Moszna rescued mares where there were ideal conditions for breeding.

Currently Moszna Stud is known in the country and abroad as a center for breeding sports horses. Horses born in Moszna succeeded on the racetrack in Poland, Czech Republic, Italy and England, with victory in over 200 races, including the roll-call 5 times in the most important race of the season - "DERBY"in Poland and two times in the same prize abroad and victory in Europe's largest race hurdle race - "Great Pardubicka" - in 2009.

Other things associated with the

castleA few years ago, Moszna castle was placed on

the jigsaw. The puzzle consists of 500 parts but after the arrangement is the following size 68cm x 47cm. The picture on the puzzles shows the castle with the beautiful view from the outside. Now, we can still buy it in many countries, where it is as popular as the jigsaw of the most famous buildings in the world, like the Eiffel Tower.

Moszna has also its own coin coming from the collection of "Castles and Palaces". It was made in 900 sample of gold and issued only in 999 pieces.

On 23 September 2010 in Moszna Castle a feature film entitled "DAAS" directed by Adrian Panek was shot. Moszna Castle plays the role of the Vienna residence of Jacob Frank. The film tells the story of the last period of Vienna life of Jacob Frank, who in the second half of the eighteenth century came to Poland and declared himself the Messiah. The filmmakers quickly decided to go to Moszna - We know this area, it is a charming place and at the same time, appropriate to our needs - Marszewska noted.
