Willkommen in Stargard!Wir möchten Sie zum Besuch in einer be-sonderen pommerschen Stadt einladen, deren Geschichte bis ins 13. Jahrhundert zurückreicht. Im Laufe der Jahrhunder-te war Stargard eine wichtige und wohl-habende Hansestadt, die oft im Handels-wettbewerb mit Stettin stand und sich sogar vorübergehend als die Hauptstadt eines der Teile Pommerns behaupten konnte. Sichtbare Beweise für die Bedeutung der Stadt lassen sich bis heu-te noch bewundern. Historische Bauwerke, immer noch erkennbare mittel-alterliche Straßenstruktur, die besondere Atmosphäre der Altstadt mit dem Markt und der Stiftskirche, die mächtige Stadtmauer mit Toren, Wehrtür-men und Basteien umgibt ein drei Kilometer langer Ringpark. Auf der klei-nen Fläche der schönen Stadt be�ndet sich eine erstaunlich große Anzahl von Sehenswürdigkeiten.

Stargard welcomes!Please feel invited to visit a unique Pomer-anian city with the history dating back to the 13th century. �roughout centuries, Stargard was an important and wealthy town belonging to the Hanseatic League and a trading competitor to Szczecin; in a certain period it was also a capital city of one of parts of Pomerania. Even today, the material evidence of its former glory is no-

ticeable. In a small area of the charming town, an exceptional number of unique sites can be found, including historic buildings, still visible medieval town lay-out, speci�c atmosphere of the Old Town together with the Market Square and the Collegiate Church, magni�cent defensive town walls with gates, towers and bastle houses, surrounded with a three kilometre long Planty park.

�e St. Mary’s Collegiate Church and Stargard’s medieval defensive walls have acquired National

Historic Monument status, given to non-movable heritage objects of particular historic, scienti�c and

artistic value.

Stargardzkie zabytki zostały włączone do Europej-skiego Szlaku Gotyku Ceglanego, trasy turystycz-

nej obejmującej 34 miasta z ceglaną architekturą gotycką w siedmiu krajach wokół Morza Bałtyckie-

go, które w swojej historii związane były z Hanzą.

Stargarder Denkmäler bilden ein Teil der Europä-ischen Route der Backsteingotik, die 34 hansea-tische Städte mit gotischer Backsteinarchitektur in

sieben Ländern rund um die Ostsee umfasst.

A number of Stargard’s historic monuments have been incorporated into the European Route of

Brick Gothic, a tourist route including 34 cities with the brick gothic architecture, located in

seven countries around the Baltic Sea, historically associated with the Hanseatic League.

Jak dotrzeć?Stargard leży dokładnie na 15 południku długości geogra�cznej wchodniej (53 st. 21 min. szer. geogr. północnej). Miasto jest ważnym węzłem komunikacyjnym, zarówno kolejowym jak i drogo-wym. Większość pociągów do i ze Szczecina przejeżdża przez Stargard. Miasto leży przy drodze krajowej nr 10, w niewielkiej odległości od drogi ekspresowej S3 (E65) i drogi krajowej nr 6 (E28).Odległość ze Stargardu do Szczecina wynosi ok. 37 km, do Berlina – ok. 180 km, do Poznania – ok. 250 km, do Gdańska – 325 km, do Warszawy – 500 km.Dojazd do Stargardu znad morza jest bardzo prosty. Samochodem można dojechać przez Nowogard drogą nr 106, przez Goleniów drogą nr 103, przez Szczecin drogą krajową nr 10.

Wie komme ich an?Stargard liegt genau auf dem 15. Meridian der östlichen Länge (53°21‘ der nördli-chen Breite). Die Stadt ist ein wichtiger Straßen- und Eisenbahnknotenpunkt. Die meisten Züge von und nach Szczecin (Stettin) fahren durch Stargard. Die Stadt liegt an der Natio-nalstraße Nr. 10, nicht weit von der Schnellstraße S3 (E65) und der Nationalstraße Nr. 6 (E28) entfernt.Die Entfernung von Stargard nach Stettin beträgt etwa 37 km, nach Berlin – etwa 180 km, nach Poznań (Posen) – etwa 250 km, Gdańsk (Danzig) – 325 km, Warsza-wa (Warschau) – 500 km.Die Anfahrt von der Ostseeküste ist sehr einfach. Sie fahren über Nowogard die Straße Nr. 106, über Goleniów die Straße Nr. 103 und über Szczecin die National-straße Nr. 10.

How to reach us?Stargard lies exactly at the 15th meridian east (latitude: north 53º 21’).�e city is an important railway and road tra�c junction. Most trains heading to and leaving Szczecin pass through Stargard. �e city lies on the national road no. 10 and the S3 (E65) expressway and the national road no. 6 (E28) run nearby.Stargard is located around 37 km from Szczecin, around 180 km from Berlin, around 250 km from Poznań, 325 km from Gdańsk and 500 km from Warsaw.It is also very easy to reach Stargard while travelling from the Baltic coast. If going by car, you may take road no. 106 via Nowogard, road no. 103 via Goleniów or na-tional road no. 10 via Szczecin.

Oddalone o 7 km Jezioro Miedwie – jedno z naj-większych w Polsce – jest idealnym miejscem dla miłośników windsur�ngu. Jezioro łączy ze Stargardem wydzielona ścieżka rowerowa.

Die Umgebung von StargardStargard, das sind nicht nur Sehenswürdig-keiten der Backsteingotik. Die Stadt und ihre Umgebung bieten ausgezeichnete Be-dingungen für Aktiverholung. Der 7 km entfernte Miedwie-See – einer der größten in Polen – ist ein perfekter Ort für Windsur-�ng. Den See verbindet mit Stargard ein se-parater Radweg.

Around StargardAttractions of Brick Gothic are not the only things Stargard has to o�er. �e city and its surrounding areas provide also perfect conditions to practice active tourism. One of Poland’s largest lakes, Miedwie, located 7 km from the town, is a Mecca for wind-sur�ng fans. �e lake is connected with Stargard by a bicycle path. 5

Stargard – Klejnot PomorzaSpotkanie ze stargardzkimi zabytkami ułatwia szlak sta-romiejski „Stargard – Klejnot Pomorza”, na którym znajduje się większość interesujących obiektów (zobacz plan). Podczas spaceru tą trasą odwiedzamy rynek staro-miejski z ratuszem, barokowy odwach mieszczący miej-skie muzeum, hanzeatycką kolegiatę – wzór dla tego typu budowli w tej części Europy. Szlak prowadzi do-okoła miejskich murów obronnych z licznymi baszta-mi, bramami, basteją (mieszczącą nowoczesną placówkę muzeum). Podążanie szlakiem ułatwiają drogowska-zy, stylizowane tablice informacyjne ustawione przy za-bytkowych obiektach, oraz charakterystyczne metalowe emblematy umieszczone w chodnikach i ścieżkach.

Stargard – Kleinod PommernsDie Begegnung mit den Stargarder Sehenswürdigkeiten erleichtert die touristische Route „Stargard – Kleinod Pommerns“, an der sich die meisten interessanten Bau-werken be�nden (siehe Stadtplan). Unterwegs besucht man den Alten Markt mit dem Rathaus, die barocke Hauptwache, in der sich das Stadtmuseum be�ndet, die hanseatische Stiftskirche – Vorbild für andere Bauwer-ke dieser Art in Nordeuropa. Die Route führt zu den Stadtmauern mit zahlreichen Wehrtürmen, Toren und der Bastei (mit einer modernen Museumsausstellung). Die Route ist gut ausgeschildert, es gibt stilisierte Infor-mationstafeln an historischen Objekten und die Route selbst wird mit den im P�aster eingesetzten Metallta-feln markiert.

Stargard – Jewel of PomeraniaFollowing the “Stargard – Jewel of Pomerania” tourist route including most of interesting spots within the Old Town borders (see the map) will help you to reach the historic monuments of the city. �e path will lead you to the Old Town Market Square with a town hall, a baroque guard house, nowadays housing a municipal museum, a Hanseatic collegiate church which served as a model for other similar buildings in this part of Europe. �e route leads along defensive town walls with numerous tow-ers, gates, a bastle house (housing a modern museum). Guideposts, stylised information boards located next to historic monuments and metal plaques in pavements and alleys will make following the route easier.6

Trzeba zobaczyć!RYNEK STAROMIEJSKI to serce starego Stargardu, czworoboczny plac wytyczo-ny w trakcie lokalizacji miasta. Rynek otaczały najważniejsze budowle średniowiecz-nego grodu, na najdroższych parcelach w pobliżu rynku powstawały najokazalsze domy bogatych mieszczan. Przy rynku znajduje się STARY RATUSZ – najdłuższy i jeden z największych na Pomorzu, który pierwotnie był domem kupieckim (halą targową), a z czasem zaczął służyć ławnikom i radzie miejskiej. Obok ratusza znaj-dują się: ODWACH – ba-rokowy budynek mieszczą-cy dziś muzeum, oraz dwie KAMIENICE o numerach 3 i 4 – jedyne zrekonstru-owane po 1945 roku domy stojące przy rynku (mieszczą muzeum i punkt informacji turystycznej).

KOLEGIATA NMP KRÓ-LOWEJ ŚWIATA zalicza-na jest do najwybitniejszych dzieł średniowiecznej archi-tektury na terenie Polski. Budowę kościoła rozpoczę-to w 1292 roku. By spełniał aspiracje bogacących się mieszczan już ok. 1380 roku rozpoczęto przebudowę, która trwała do połowy XV w. Najważniejszą część prac przypisuje się Henrykowi Bruns-bergowi. Powstała monumentalna i lekka zarazem, dwuwieżowa bazylika w typie hanzeatyckiej miejskiej katedry. W 1635 roku świątynię zniszczył wielki pożar, po którym została odbudowana do 1661 roku. Kolejne zniszczenie kościoła nastąpiło w 1945 roku, a odbudowa trwała do 1962 roku. W roku 1995 fara została podnie-siona do godności kolegiaty. Główne wymiary świątyni: 77,6 m długości, 37,2 m szerokości, 30,2 m wysokości nawy głównej, z dachem – 39,5m, wieży północnej – 85 m. Na wieży północnej znajduje się punkt widokowy.

MURY OBRONNE są jedną z wizytówek Stargardu. Powstały w trzech fazach po-między XIII a XVI wiekiem. W XV-XVII w. mury miejskie o łącznej długości 2260 m, były dodatkowo wzmocnione przez 9 baszt pełnych, 45 czatowni (półbaszt), 4 bramy, 4 basteje, 4 obronne furty w murach. Uzupełnieniem forty�kacji były WAŁY, BASTIONY i FOSY miejskie. Do dziś zachowało się 1040 m murów, basz-ty: JEŃCÓW, TKACZY (LODO-WA), MORZE CZERWONE, BIA-ŁOGŁÓWKA, bramy: PYRZYCKA, WAŁOWA. W BASTEI przy Baszcie Tkaczy funkcjonuje obecnie najno-wocześniejsza placówka muzealna na Pomorzu Zachodnim. W tym cztero-poziomowym obiekcie do prezenta-cji historii miasta wykorzystano m.in. hologramy 3D, animacje oraz dźwięk. W sumie zgromadzono zbiory z po-nad 30 europejskich muzeów. 10

BRAMA MŁYŃSKA, nazy-wana także bramą WODNĄ lub PORTOWĄ jest jedy-ną w Polsce i jedną z dwóch w Europie miejską bramą stojącą nad korytem rzeki. Od średniowiecza była jed-nym z symboli Stargardu, umieszczanym na pieczę-ciach i w herbie miasta – stąd czwarta jej nazwa: BRAMA

HERBOWA. Została wzniesiona w I poł. XV w., gdy połączono dwie wieże stoją-ce po przeciwnych brzegach zachodniej odnogi Iny. Mieściła komorę celną i strzegła stargardzkiego portu.

KAMIENICA GOTYCKA – tzw. „Stary dom” lub „Dom Protzena” – to doskonały przykład do-mu-składu charakterystycznego dla dużych miast hanzeatyckich, gdzie parter zajmowała wysoka sień z kantorem, a wyższe kondygnacje pełniły funkcje mieszkalne i magazynowe. Dom Protzena powstał w II poł. XV w., zdobienia renesansowe fasady dodano w XVI w. Obecnie w kamienicy (oraz sąsiednim współczesnym budynku) mieści się szkoła muzyczna.

KRZYŻ POKUTNY – największy tego typu monument w Pol-sce, znajduje się poza szlakiem „Klejnot Po-morza”, u zbiegu ulic Morskiej i Gdańskiej na obrzeżach miasta. Krzyż posta-wił w 1542 roku niejaki Lorenz Mader zabójca Hansa Billeke jako część zadośćuczynienia rodzinie zamordowa-nego. Monument wykuty z wapienia gotlandzkiego ma wysokość 377 cm (z tego 90 cm pod ziemią), rozpiętość ramion 145 cm, grubość 15 cm.

POMNIK 15. POŁUDNIK znajduje się w zachodnich obrze-żach miasta przy ul. Szczeciń-skiej, nieopodal Ronda 15. Połu-dnik. Ustawiony został w okresie międzywojennym. Masywny gra-nitowy kamień z metalową tabli-cą i modelem siatki geogra�cznej na szczycie. 15. południk długości geogra�cznej wschodniej wyzna-cza centrum środkowoeuropejskiej strefy czasowej. 11

Unbedingt sehenswert!Der ALTE MARKT bildet das Herz des alten Stargards, es ist ein rechteckiger Platz, der schon seit der Stadtgründung diesem Zwecke diente. Den Markt säum-ten die wichtigsten Bauten der mittelalter-lichen Stadt. Auf den teuersten Parzellen am Markt standen prächtige Häuser der reichen Stadtbürger. Am Marktplatz steht auch das ALTE RATHAUS – das längs-te und eines der größten in Pommern. Es war ursprünglich eine Markthalle, die später den Schö�en und dem Stadtrat als Versammlungsort zu dienen begann. Ne-ben dem Rathaus stehen die ALTE WA-CHE – ein barockes Gebäude, das heute ein Museum beherbergt, und zwei BÜR-GERHÄUSER mit den Nummern 3 und 4 – die einzigen Häuser am Alten Markt, die nach 1945 historisch treu rekonstru-iert wurden (im Inneren ein Museum und die Touristeninformation).

STIFTSKIRCHE DER HEILIGEN JUNGFRAU MARIA, KÖNIGIN DER WELT gehört zu den herausragendsten Werken der mittelalterlichen Baukunst auf dem Gebiet Polens. Den Grundstein für den Bau der Kirche hat man 1292 ge-legt. Um dem wachsenden Selbstbewusst-sein des immer wohlhabenderen Bürger-tums gerecht zu werden, hat man schon 1380 mit den Umbauarbeiten begonnen, die bis Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts gedauert haben. Der wichtigste Teil des Umbaus gilt als Verdienst von Hinrich Brunsberg. Es ist eine monumentale und zugleich leichte, zweitürmige Basilika vom Typ des hanseatischen Stadtdomes. 1635 ist die Kirche zum Opfer eines verheerenden Großbrands gefallen, nach dem sie schließ-lich 1661 wiederaufgebaut wurde. 1945 ist die Kirche wieder zerstört worden und der Wiederaufbau dauerte bis 1962. 1995 wurde die Pfarrkirche zur Stiftskirche er-hoben. Die Hauptmaße des Domes: 77,6 m Länge, 37,2 m Breite, 30,2 m Höhe des Hauptschi�es, Dachhöhe – 39,5 m, Höhe des Nordturmes – 85 m. Auf dem Nord-turm be�ndet sich eine Aussichtsplattform.

WEHRMAUERN sind eines der Wahr-zeichen von Stargard. Sie sind in drei Etappen zwischen dem 13. und 16. Jahrhundert entstanden. Im 15./16 Jahrhundert hatten sie die Gesamtlänge von 2260 m und waren mit 9 Wehrtür-men, 45 Wachtürmen, 4 Toren, 4 Bas-teien und 4 Mauerpforten ausgestattet. Zusätzlich gab es WALLANLAGEN,

BASTIONEN und STADTGRABEN. Bis zum heutigen Tag gibt es 1040 m lan-ge Ringmauer und Wehrtürme: Turm der GEFANGENEN, WEBERTURM (EI-STURM), ROTES MEER; WEISSKOPF, Tore: PYRITZER TOR, WALLTOR. In der BASTEI am WEBERTURM be�ndet sich heute die modernste Musealein-richtung in Westpommern. In diesem 4-stöckigen Bauwerk wird die Geschichte der Stadt mittels 3D-Hollogramme, Animationen und Tonaufnahmen dargestellt. Ins-gesamt sind hier Objekte aus über 30 europäischen Museen.

MÜLLENTOR, genannt auch WAS-SER- oder HAFENTOR ist das einzige in Polen und eines von zwei Stadttoren in Europa, das über dem Fluss gebaut wurde. Im Mittelalter war es eines der Wahrzeichen von Stargard, das auf den Siegeln und im Stadtwappen abgebildet wurde, daher auch die vierte Bezeich-nung: das WAPPENTOR. Es ist in der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts er-richtet worden, als zwei Türme auf ge-genüberliegenden Ufern des westlichen Flussarmes der Ihne baulich verbunden wurden. Es beherbergte eine Zollkam-mer und schützte den Stargarder Hafen.

GOTISCHES BÜRGERHAUS – „altes Haus“ oder „Haus zum Protzen“ – es ist ein gutes Beispiel für Wohn- und Lagerhaus, das für große hanseatische Städte cha-rakteristisch war. Im Erdgeschoss befand sich eine hohe Diele mit den Gewerbe-raumräumen, obere Stockwerke dienten den Wohn- und Lagerzwecken. Das Haus zum Protzen ist in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts entstanden und die Ver-zierungen des Giebels erst im 16. Jahrhundert. Heutzutage be�ndet sich hier (und im Nachbarhaus) eine Musikschule.

BÜSSEKREUTZ – das größte Objekt dieser Art in Polen, es be�ndet sich am Stadtrande abseits der Route „Kleinod Pommerns“, an der Kreuzung der Straßen Morska und Gdańska . Das Kreuz wurde von dem gewissen Lorenz Mader, dem Mörder von Hans Billeke, als Teil seiner Büße aufgestellt. Das Monument wurde aus dem got-ländischen Kalkstein gehauen, es ist 377 cm groß (davon 90 cm unter der Erde), die Spannweite der Arme beträgt 145 cm und es ist 15 cm dick.

DENKMAL 15. MERIDIAN be�ndet sich am westlichen Stadtrand an der Straße Szczecińska, in der Nähe des Kreisverkehrs mit dem Namen 15. Południk (15. Me-ridian). Es wurde vor dem zweiten Welt-krieg aufgestellt. Es ist ein Granit�ndling mit einer Metalltafel und dem Modell des Gradnetzes der Erde an der Spitze. Der 15. Meridian der östlichen Länge markiert das Zentrum der mitteleuropäischen Zeitzone. 13

Must-sees!�e OLD TOWN MARKET, a rectan-gular square marked out during the town incorporation, is the heart of Stargard. �e market was surrounded by the most important buildings of the medieval town. Plots of land located nearby, built over with impressive houses belonging to wealthy townsmen, were the most ex-pensive in whole Stargard. Today in the market square you will �nd the OLD TOWN HALL – Pomerania’s longest and one of largest, which originally served as a trading house (an indoor market) and later on became a seat of municipal court and council. Next to the town hall is a GUARD HOUSE – a baroque building, nowadays housing a museum, accompanied by two TENEMENT HOUSES (no. 3 and 4) – the only ones in the market which were re-built after 1945 (they house a museum and a tourist information centre).

�e COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF VIRGIN MARY QUEEN OF THE WORLD is count-ed among Poland’s most outstanding works of medieval architecture. �e construction of the church commenced in 1292. Due to the grow-ing wealth of townsmen and in order to ful�l their ambitions, the church was soon put under remodelling which started as early as around 1380 and ended in the mid 15th century. �e most important portion of works was probably conducted by Heinrich Brunsberg. As a result, the church became a both monumental and delicate basilica resembling a typical Hanseatic municipal cathedral. After being damaged by a great �re in 1635, it was rebuild in 1661. In 1945 it was again destroyed and the reconstruction ended in 1962. In 1995 the previously parish church acquired collegiate status. Dimensions of the church: length: 77.6 m, width: 37.2 m, height: 30.2 m (nave), 39.5 m (to top of roof ); 85 m (northern tower). A viewing platform is located in the northern tower.

DEFENSIVE WALLS constitute one of Stargard’s landmarks. Originally 2260 m long, they were built in three stages between the 13th and the 16th century. Be-tween the 15th and 17th century the town walls were strengthened with 9 towers, 45 watchhouses, 4 gates, 4 bastle houses, 4 passages. �e forti�cations were sup-ported by RAMPARTS, BASTIONS and municipal MOATS. 1040 m of walls, the PRISONERS’ TOWER, the WEAVERS’ (ICE) TOWER, the RED SEA TOW-ER, the BIAŁOGŁÓWKA TOWER, the PYRZYCKA GATE and the RAM-PART GATE have been preserved until the present day. �e BASTLE HOUSE

near the Weavers’ Tower now houses the most modern museum in West Pomer-ania. In this four-storey building, the town’s history is presented with the use of, among others, 3D holograms, ani-mations and sound e�ects. In total, ex-hibits from more than 30 European mu-seums have been gathered there.14

�e MILL GATE, also re-ferred to as the WATER GATE or HARBOUR GATE is Poland’s only and Europe’s one out of two town gate erected above the river-bed. Since the Middle Ages it has been one of Stargard’s landmarks – its image was part of a municipal seal and coat of arms, giving it its fourth name, the COAT OF

ARMS GATE. It was built in the �rst half of the 15th century by connecting two towers standing at both banks of the western arm of the river Ina. It housed a cus-toms chamber and safeguarded Stargard’s harbour.

�e GOTHIC TENEMENT HOUSE, so called the “Old House” or “Protzen’s House” is a perfect example of a mixed-purpose building typical for huge Hanseatic towns, with the ground �oor in-cluding a tall entrance hall and upper �oors used for dwelling and storage purposes. �e Protzen’s House was erected in the second half of the 15th century and the renaissance elements on its façade were added in the 16th century. Currently the tene-ment house (as well as the adjacent modern build-ing) is a seat of a music school.

�e EXPIATORY CROSS – Poland’s largest monument of such kind, not included in the “Jewel of Pomerania” route, can be found on the outskirts of the city, near the junction of Morska and Gdańska Streets. �e cross was fund-ed in 1542 by Lorenz Mader as part of atonement for murdering Hans Billeke. �e monument has been carved in Gotland limestone and it is 377 cm high (including 90 cm under the ground), 145 cm wide and 15 cm thick.

�e 15TH MERIDIAN MONU-MENT is located in the western suburb of the city in Szczecińska Street, near 15. Południk Round-about. It was unveiled before the World War II and consists of a huge granite rock with a met-al plaque and a model of a grati-cule on top. �e 15th meridian east marks the centre of the Central European time zone. 15
