EXPOSURE TO RADIOFREQUENCY ENERGYRadio wave exposure and Specific AbsorptionRate (SAR) informationThis mobile phone model KE850 has beendesigned to comply with applicable safetyrequirement for exposure to radio waves. Thisrequirement is based on scientific guidelines thatinclude safety margins designed to assure thissafety of all persons, regardless of age andhealth.

° The radio wave exposure guidelines employ aunit of measurement known as the SpecificAbsorption Rate, or SAR. Tests for SAR areconducted using standardized method with thephone transmitting at its highest certified powerlevel in all used frequency bands.

° While there may be differences between theSAR levels of various LG phone models, they areall designed to meet the relevant guidelines forexposure to radio waves.

° The SAR limit recommended by the internationalCommission on Non-Ionizing RadiationProtection (ICNIRP), which is 2W/kg averagedover ten (10) gram of tissue.

° The highest SAR value for this model phonetested by DASY4 for use at the ear is 0.838W/kg (10g).

° SAR data information for residents incountries/regions that have adopted the SARlimit recommended by the Institute of Electricaland Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which is 1.6W/kg averaged over one (1) gram of tissue.

° Do not disassemble this unit. Take it to aqualified service technician when repair work isrequired.

° Keep away from electrical appliances such asTVs, radios, and personal computers.

ELECTRONICS DEVICESAll mobile phones may get interference, whichcould affect performance.

° Do not use your mobile phone near medicalequipment without requesting permission. Avoidplacing the phone over pacemakers, i.e. in yourbreast pocket.

° Some hearing aids might be disturbed by mobilephones.

° Minor interference may affect TVs, radios, PCs,etc.

ROAD SAFETYCheck the laws and regulations on the use ofmobile phones in the areas when you drive.

° Do not use a hand-held phone while driving.

° Give full attention to driving.

° Use a hands-free kit, if available.

° Pull off the road and park before making oranswering a call if driving conditions so require.

° RF energy may affect some electronic systemsin your vehicle such as car stereos and safetyequipment.

° When your vehicle is equipped with an air bag,do not obstruct with installed or portablewireless equipment. It can fail or cause seriousinjury due to improper performance.

BATTERY INFORMATIONAND CARE

° You do not need to completely discharge thebattery before recharging. Unlike other batterysystems, there is no memory effect that couldcompromise the battery’s performance.

° Use only LG batteries and chargers. LG chargersare designed to maximize the battery life.

° Do not disassemble or short-circuit the batterypack.

° Keep the metal contacts of the battery packclean.

° Replace the battery when it no longer providesacceptable performance. The battery pack maybe recharged hundreds of times until it needsreplacing.

° Recharge the battery if it has not been used fora long time to maximize usability.

° Do not expose the battery charger to directsunlight or use it in high humidity, such as thebathroom.

° Do not leave the battery in hot or cold places,this may deteriorate the battery performance.

° There is risk of explosion if the battery isreplaced by an incorrect type.

° Dispose of used batteries according to themanufacturer’s instructions. Please recyclewhen possible. Do not dispose as householdwaste.

CAUTIONS FOR TOUCHKEYS1. Make sure your hands are clean and dry.

° Remove all moisture from the surface of yourhands or the touch keys in a humidenvironment.

2. You do not need to press hard on the touchkeys to make them work.Do not subject the product to severe impact, asthis may damage the touch key sensors.

3. Use the tip of your finger to press exactly onthe touch key you want, being careful not totouch the keys for other functions.

4. When both the home screen and touch keylights are off, pressing a touch key will not turnon the home screen light. Press and thehome screen light will turn back on(touch keysdo not work when the touch key lights are off).

5. Touch keys may not work normally if a mobilephone case or plastic cover is covering them.Also, touch keys may not work if you arewearing gloves.

6. Keep metal and other conductive materialsaway from the surface of the touch keys, ascontact with them may result in an error.

7. This phone does not allow to use a pen or astylus to select menu. If you use a pen or astylus, the menus cannot be activated properly.Use the phone by only finger.

8. Touch key cannot be activated properly in hotand humid environment.

° This product’s keys on the LCD screen are touch keys.

The quality of the conversation may changedepending on network coverage. When thesignal strength is below 2 bars, you mayexperience muting, call drop and poor audio.Please take the network bars as an indicatorfor your calls. When there are no bars, thatmeans that there is no network coverage: inthis case, you won’t be able to access thenetwork for any service (call, messages andso on).

INSTALLING THE SIMCARD AND THE HANDSETBATTERYMake sure the power is off before you remove thebattery.

1. REMOVE THE BATTERY COVER.Press the battery release latch and lift the batterycover from the bottom of the phone.

2. REMOVE THE BATTERY.Hold the top edge of the battery and lift thebattery from the battery compartment.

Removing the battery from the phone whenthe power is on may cause the phone tomalfunction.

3. INSTALL THE SIM CARD.Slide the SIM card into the SIM card holder. Makesure that the SIM card is inserted properly andthat the gold contact area on the card is facingdownwards. To remove the SIM card, press downlightly and pull it in the reverse direction.

4. INSTALL THE BATTERY.Insert the bottom of the battery first into thebottom edge of the battery compartment. Ensurethe battery contacts align with the terminals onthe phone. Push down the top of the battery untilit snaps into space. Do not force the battery.

5. REPLACE THE BATTERY COVER.Lay the battery cover in place on the phone andpress it down until the latch clicks.

The metal contact of the SIM card can beeasily damaged by scratches. Pay specialattention to the SIM card while handling.Follow the instructions supplied with the SIMcard.

CHARGING THE BATTERYBefore connecting the charger to the phone youmust first check the battery is installed.

1. Ensure the battery is fully charged before usingthe phone.

2. With the arrow on the plug facing down, pushthe plug on the charger into the socket on theside of the phone.

3. Connect the other end of the charger to themain socket. Use only the charger included inthe box with the phone.

4. The moving bars of the battery icon will stopafter charging is complete.

DISCONNECTING THECHARGERDisconnect the travel adapter from the phone asshown in the diagram. Make sure you pull by theplug, not the cord.

- Do not force the connector as this maydamage the phone and/or the charger.

- If you use the charger out of your owncountry, use an attachment plug adaptorfor the proper configuration.

- Do not remove your battery or the SIMcard while charging.

- There is risk of explosion if battery isreplaced by an incorrect type. Dispose ofused batteries according to the maker'sinstructions.

- Unplug the charger from the mains andphone during lightning storms to avoidelectric shock or fire.

- Make sure that no sharp-edged items suchas animal teeth or nails come into contactwith the battery. There is a risk of thiscausing a fire.

MEMORY CARDSlide the memory card into the slot until thememory card is fully inserted into the slot, asshown in the figure below:

INSTALLING THE MEMORYCARD

REMOVING THE MEMORYCARD1. Push in memory card with the tip of your finger

into the slot which will activate the ejectmechanism.

2. Carefully pull the memory card out of slot.

Slide the memory card in with the metal contacts facing down.

Remove the memory card

- The memory card must be removed orinserted only when necessary as itsremoval/insertion may lead to failure.

- When inserting an external memory card,remove and insert it again if its iconappears red. (If the icon remains red afterre-insertion, the memory card may likelybe damaged, so replace it with anotherone.)

- Removal of an external memory card orturning the mobile phone off while usingthe card (Store, Copy, Remove, Initialise,Play, etc.) may clear or initialise anystored file, which in turn may lead tosevere damage on the card or malfunctionof the phone.

- It is recommended the card be initialisedwithin the mobile phone. The memory cardincludes some system space for anyexternal memory file so some capacitymay survive the initialisation of thememory card.

- It is always advised to make a backup ofany data stored on your memory card.

- A few memory cards cannot be compatiblewith a phone, so please contactmanufacuture for details.

MAKING A CALL1. Make sure your phone is powered on.2. In standby mode, tap icon. 3. Enter a phone number including the area code.

To edit a number on the display screen, simplypress the key to erase one digit at a time.

° If you press key or tap , you can goback to previous menu.

4. Press the key or tap to call.5. When you want to finish, press the key.

MAKING ANINTERNATIONAL CALL1. Tap and hold the key for the international

prefix. The ‘+’ character can be replaced withthe international access code.

2. Enter the country code, area code, and thephone number.

3. Press the key or tap to call.

ENDING A CALLWhen you have finished a call, press the key.

MAKING A CALL FROM THECONTACT LISTYou can store names and phone numbers dialledfrequently in the SIM card as well as the phonememory known as the Contact list.You can dial a number by simply looking up aname in the contact list. For more details on theContacts feature, please refer to page 30.

ADJUSTING THE VOLUMEUse the up/down keys on the side of the phone toadjust the volume during a call.

SIGNAL STRENGTHIf you are inside a building, being near a windowmay give you better reception. You can see thestrength of your signal by the signal indicator( ) on your phone’s display screen.

ENTERING TEXTYou can enter alphanumeric characters by usingthe keypad on the touch screen. For example,storing names in the phonebook, writing amessage, and scheduling events in the calendarall require entering text. The following text inputmethods are available in the phone.

T9 MODEThis mode allows you to enter words with only onekeystroke per letter. Each key on the keypad hasmore than one letter. The T9 mode automaticallycompares your keystrokes with an internallinguistic dictionary to determine the correctword, thus requiring far fewer keystrokes than thetraditional ABC mode. T9 is set to Off as default.

ABC MODEThis mode allows you to enter letters by pressingthe key labeled with the required letter once,twice, three or four times until the letter isdisplayed.

123 MODE (NUMBERSMODE) Type numbers using one keystroke per number. Tochange to 123 mode in a text entry field, tap key until 123 mode is displayed in the upper rightcorner of the display.

SYMBOLIC MODE This mode allows you to enter special characters.

CHANGING THE TEXTINPUT MODE1. When you are in a field that allows characters

to be entered, you will notice the text inputmode indicator in the upper right corner of thedisplay.

2. If you want to change modes, tap to stepthrough the available modes.

Some fields may allow only one text inputmode (e.g. telephone number in addressbook fields).

USING THE T9 MODEThe T9 predictive text input mode allows you toenter words easily with a minimum number of keypresses. As you press each key, the phone beginsto display the characters that it thinks you aretyping based on a built-in dictionary. As newletters are added, the word changes to reflect themost likely candidate from the dictionary.

1. When you are in the T9 predictive text inputmode, start entering a word by tapping keys

to .

° The word changes as letters are typed-ignorewhat’s on the screen until the word is typedcompletely.

Example: Press to type Good.

° If the desired word is missing from the wordchoices list, add it by using the ABC mode.

2. Enter the whole word before editing or deletingany key strokes.

3. Complete each word with a space by pressingthe key.

To delete letters, press . Press and holddown to erase the letters continuously.

USING THE ABC MODEUse the to keys to enter your text.1. Tap the key labelled with the required letter:

° Once for the first letter.

° Twice for the second letter, and so on.2. To insert a space, tap the key once. To

delete letters, press the key. Tap and holddown the key to erase the letterscontinuously.

USING THE 123(NUMBERS) MODEThe 123 Mode enables you to enter numbers in atext message (a telephone number, for example).Tap the keys corresponding to the required digitsbefore manually switching back to theappropriate text entry mode.

USING THE SYMBOL MODEThe Symbol Mode enables you to enter varioussymbols or special characters.To enter a symbol, press the key.

To exit the text input mode without savingyour input, press . The phone returns tothe idle screen.

You can also add numbers whilst remainingin letter modes by tapping and holding thedesired key.

If you select Insert menu on writing themessage, you can insert the symbol, image,sound, text template and contact point.

You can select a different T9 language fromthe menu option . The default setting onthe phone is T9 disable mode.

Your phone provides a number of controlfunctions that you can use during a call. To accessthese functions during a call, press the left softkey [Options].

DURING A CALLThe menu displayed on the handset screen duringa call is different than the default main menudisplayed when in idle screen, and the options aredescribed below.

SPEAKER PHONEDuring call you can activate speaker phone bypressing the LOCK key and then pressing the key.

MAKING A SECOND CALL(NETWORK DEPENDENT)You can get a number you wish to dial from thephonebook to make a second call. During a call, ifyou press profile key, you can activate the dialpad.

SWITCHING BETWEENTWO CALLSTo switch between two calls, press key orthe left soft key, and then select Swap call.

ANSWERING AN INCOMINGCALL To answer an incoming call when the handset isringing, simply press the key. The handset isalso able to warn you of an incoming call whileyou are already on a call. A tone sounds in theearpiece, and the display will show that a secondcall is waiting.This feature, known as Call waiting, is onlyavailable if your network supports it. If Callwaiting is on, you can put the first call on hold andanswer the second, by pressing the left soft key.

REJECTING AN INCOMINGCALLYou can reject an incoming call without answeringby simply pressing the key.During a call, you can reject an incoming call bypressing the key twice.

MUTING THE MICROPHONEYou can mute the microphone during a call bytapping the [Mute] key in the bottom right. Thehandset can be unmuted by tapping the[Unmute]. When the handset is muted, the callercannot hear you, but you can still hear them.

DTMF TONES WHILECALLINGTo switch on DTMF tones while calling (e.g. to usethe phone with an automatic switchboard) tap[Options] followed by Send DTMF – DTMF on.Select DTMF off to disable DTMF tones. DTMFtones are normally on.

CONFERENCE CALLSThe conference service provides you with theability to have a simultaneous conversation withmore than one caller, if your network serviceprovider supports this feature. A conference callcan only be set up when you have one active calland one call on hold, both calls having beenanswered. Once a conference call is set up, callsmay be added, disconnected or separated (that is,removed from the conference call but stillconnected to you) by the person who set up theconference call. These options are all availablefrom the In-Call menu. The maximum callers in aconference call are five. Once started, you are incontrol of the conference call, and only you canadd calls to the conference call.

MAKING A SECOND CALLYou can make a second call while currently on acall. Enter the second number and press the . When the second call is connected,the first call is automatically placed on hold. Youcan swap between calls, by pressing the key.

SETTING UP ACONFERENCE CALLTo set up a conference call, place one call on holdand while the active call is on, press the left softkey and then select the Join menu of Conferencecall.

ACTIVATE THECONFERENCE CALL ONHOLDTo activate Hold on a conference call, press the

key. Alternatively press the left soft key[Options] and select Conference/Hold all calls.Other users on hold will stay connected. To returnto conference call mode, tap [Options]followed by Conference call.

ADDING CALLS TO THECONFERENCE CALLTo add a call to an existing conference call, tapthe left soft key, and then select the Join menu ofConference call.

PRIVATE CALL IN ACONFERENCE CALLTo have a private call with one caller from aconference call, display the number of the calleryou wish to talk to on the screen, then tap the leftsoft key. Select the Private menu of Conferencecall to put all the other callers on hold.

To activate the keypad in a call, press the on the side.

The display and keypad backlights will turnoff after a few seconds while in a call if nokeys are pressed. To turn on the backlightpress any key. DTMF is not sent when thebacklight is off.

You can check the record of missed, received, anddialled calls only if the network supports theCalling Line Identification (CLI) within the servicearea.The number and name (if available) are displayedtogether with the date and time at which the callwas made. You can also view call times.

You can view all lists of outgoing or incomingcalls.

Missed calls (Menu 3.2)

This option lets you view the last 40 unansweredcalls. You can also:

MESSAGE (Menu 4)

This menu includes functions related to SMS(Short Message Service), MMS (MultimediaMessage Service), Email, voice mail, as well as thenetwork’s service messages.

New text message (Menu 4.1)

You can write and edit text message, checking thenumber of message pages.1. Enter the Message menu.2. If you want to write a new message, select New

text message.3. To make text input easier, use T9.4. If you tap icon, you can view submenus as

follow:

° Insert: You can insert symbols, images, sounds,text templates, phonebook entries, or your ownbusiness card.

° T9: You can activate or cancel T9 mode.

° Writing language: You can select the language.

° New T9 word: You can add a new word by usingT9 mode.

° Save to drafts: You can save the message indrafts.

° Clear text: You can delete all the text.

° Exit: If you select Exit while writing a message,you can finish, and go back to message menu.The message you have written is not saved.

New multimedia message (Menu 4.2)

You can write and edit multimedia messages,checking the message size.1. Enter the Message menu.2. If you want to write a new message, select New

multimedia message.3. You can create a new message or choose one

of the multimedia message templates alreadymade.

The maximum available file size that can beinserted into the MMS-message is 300 kb.

- Insert signature: Select On to add yoursignature to your email messages.

- Reply email address: You can set up thereply email address.

- Incoming port number: Enter the POP3 orIMAP4 Port number that receives your email.

- Outgoing port number: Enter the SMTPaddress and Port number of computer thatsends your email.

- Outgoing mail authentication: When yousend the mail, you can set authenticationwhether or not.

Network profile (Menu 4.3.2)

A profile is the network information used toconnect to the Internet. There are default profiles for some operatorsstored in phone memory.

If you preview a picture (50K) on writing amultimedia message, the loading durationwill take around 5 seconds. You can’tactivate any keys during the loading time.After it has loaded you will be able to writethe multimedia message.

SIM message means the message exceptionallystored in SIM card. You can move this messageto the phone.

For notified multimedia message, you have to waitfor downloading and processing of the message.To read a message, select one of the messages bypressing View.

° Delete: You can delete the current message.

° Reply: You can reply to the sender.

° Reply all: You can send a reply to all recipients.

° Forward: You can forward the selectedmessage to another party.

° Return call: You can call back to the sender.

° Information: You can view information aboutreceived messages; Sender’s address, Subject(only for Multimedia message), Message date &time, Message type, Message size.

° Multiple delete: After the messages you wantto remove, you can delete the selectedmessages.

° Delete all read: You can delete all messagesread.

° Delete all: You can delete all messages.

Email box (Menu 4.5)

When you access this menu, you can eitherconnect to your remote mailbox to retrieve yournew email messages, or you can view thepreviously retrieved email messages withoutlogging in to the email server.You can check the saved emails, drafts, outbox,and sent emails. In the Inbox, up to 20 emails arestored.

Drafts (Menu 4.6)

Using this menu, you can preset up to fivemultimedia messages that you use mostfrequently. This menu shows the presetmultimedia message list.The following options are available.

° Edit: Modifies the massage you choose.

° Delete: Deletes the message you choose.

° Information: To view the information of themessage.

° Multiple delete: After selecting the messagesyou want to remove, press OK and you candelete the selected messages.

- For each e-mail account you may save upto 20 messages (totally 100 for fiveaccounts). In the Inbox folder you maysave not more than 20 messages, in Draftsand Outbox folders - 5 messages, and inSent folder up to 10 messages. In caseDrafts, Outbox or Sent folder is full, andyou try to save a new message to one ofthese folders, the oldest saved messagewill be automatically deleted.

- Maximum size for one sent message is 300kb with attachments, and maximum sizefor one received message is 100 kb. Incase you have received a message withmore than 5 attachments, only 5 of themwill be received. Some attachments maydisplay incorrectly.

This menu allows to view the message which isabout to send or is failed sending. After sendingthe message successfully, the message will bemoved to sent menu.

Info service (Menu 4.0)

(Dependent to network and subscription)Info service messages are text messagesdelivered by the network to the your phone. Theyprovide general information such as weatherreports, traffic news, taxis, pharmacies, and stockprices. Each type of has the number; therefore,you can contact the service provider as long asyou have input the relevant number for theinformation you want. When you have received aninfo service message, you can see the popupmessage to show you that you have received amessage or the info service message is directlydisplayed. To view the message again or not instandby mode, follow the sequence shown below;

Read (Menu 4.0.1)

1. When you have received an info servicemessage and select Read to view the message,it will be displayed on the screen. You can readanother message by scrolling .

2. The message will be shown until anothermessage is reached.

° Add new: You can add Info service messagenumbers in the phone memory with itsnickname.

° Validity period: This network service allows youto set how long your text messages will bestored at the message centre.

° Reply charging: When a message is sent, itallows the recipients to reply and charge thecost of the reply to your telephone bill. Thisservice is dependant on your service provider.

° Message type:Text, Voice, Fax, Natl. paging, X.400, E-mail,ERMESUsually, the type of message is set to Text. Youcan convert your text into alternative formats.Contact your service provider for the availabilityof these functions.

Mulitimedia message (Menu 4.12.2)

If you select this menu, you can tap the submenusin each bar.

° Slide duration: You can set the duration ofeach slide.

° Priority: You can set the priority of the messageyou choose.

° Validity period: This network service allows youto set how long your text messages will bestored at the message centre.

° Delivery report: If it is set to Yes in this menu,you can check whether your message has beendelivered successfully.

° Read report: If it is set to Yes in this menu, youcan check whether the receiver has read themessage or not.

° Auto download: If you select On, you receivemultimedia messages automatically. If youselect Off, you receive only notification messagein the inbox and then you can check thisnotification. If you select Home network only,you receive multimedia messages only whenusing your home network.

Never remove thecable from the PC or phone while data istransferring as this can seriously damage thephone.

Because of the small dimension of thespeaker, in some cases the audio could bedistorted, especially at maximum volumeand when there are lots of bass sounds.Therefore, we recommend you to use thestereo headset in order to appreciate thehigh quality of your music.

The KE850 doesn't support the variable bitrate of all mentioned file types. Therefore,you can't change the file from MP3 format toAAC.

Radio (Menu 6.1)

You can search radio stations and enjoy listeningto the radio.

1. Tap the corresponding number key of a channelto store the currently selected radio stationinto.

2. After presetting the radio channels, you canlisten to all the preset channels.

3. You can adjust frequency and change the radiostation in the selected channel. You can searchfor the next station by tapping for at least twoseconds or pressing the side keys.

Connectivity (Menu 3.6)

Network selection (Menu 3.6.1)

You can select a network type.

° Automatic: If you select Automatic mode, thephone will automatically search for and select anetwork for you. Once you have selected“Automatic”, the phone will be set to“Automatic” even if you turn your phone offand on.

° Manual: The phone will find the list of availablenetworks and show them on a list. Then you canselect the network which you want to use if thisnetwork has a roaming agreement with yourhome network operator. The phone allows youselect another network if the phone fails toaccess the selected network.

° Preferred: You can set a list of preferrednetworks and the phone attempts to registerwith first, before attempting to register to anyother networks. This list is set from the phone’spredefined list of known networks.

Network profile (Menu 3.6.2)

A profile is the network information used toconnect to the Internet.There are default profiles for some operatorsstored in phone memory. It's impossible to deletedefault profiles.

GPRS attach (Menu 3.6.3)

You can set GPRS service depending on varioussituations.

° Switch onIf you select this menu, the phone isautomatically registered to a GPRS networkwhen you switch the phone on. Starting a WAPor PC dial-up application created theconnection between phone and network anddata transfer is possible. When you end theapplication, GPRS connection is ended but theregistration to the GPRS network remains.

° When neededIf you select this menu, the GPRS connection isestablished when you connect a WAP serviceand closed when you end the WAP connection.

You can use your phone with a variety of PCconnectivity and data communicationsapplications though USB.

TROUBLESHOOTINGThis chapter lists some problems that you might encounter while using your phone. Some problemsrequire that you call your service provider, but most of problems you encounter are easy to correctyourself.

11.. WWHHAATT TTHHIISS WWAARRRRAANNTTYY CCOOVVEERRSS ::

LG offers you a limited warranty that the enclosed phone and its enclosed accessories will be freefrom defects in material and workmanship according to the following terms and conditions:

(1) The limited warranty for the product extends the warranty period beginning on thedate of purchase of the product.

(2) The limited warranty applies for 1 year from the original date of purchase and extends only tothe original purchaser of the product and is not assignable or transferable to any subsequentpurchaser/end user. It shall neither exclude nor limit any mandatory statutory rights of thecustomer or any of the customer rights against the seller/dealer of the product.

(3) This warranty is good only to the original purchaser during the warranty period, butlimited to certain country if specified.

(4) The external housing and cosmetics parts shall be free of defects at the time ofshipment and, therefore, shall not be covered under these limited warranty terms.

(5) Upon request from LG. or their designated service agent the consumer must provideinformation to reasonably prove the date of purchase.

(6) Unless other service arrangements have been specified the customer shall bear thecost of shipping a defective product back to the Customer Service Department of LG.LG shall bear the cost of shipping the product back to the consumer after thecompletion of service under this limited warranty.

(7) During the warranty period LG or its authorised service agent will repair or replace atLG’s sole discretion a defective product. A repaired or replaced product will not begiven a prolonged or renewed warranty period.

(5) Products which have had the serial number or IMEI number removed or made illegible.

(6) This limited warranty is in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied either in factor by operations of law, statutory or otherwise, including, but not limited to any impliedwarranty of marketability or fitness for a particular use.

(7) Damage resulting from use of non-LG approved accessories.

(8) All plastic surfaces and all other externally exposed parts that are scratched ordamaged due to normal customer use.
