Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! I hope that these hot summer months provided time for your family to relax and spend time together because the new school year brings with it busy times and full schedules. The campus is filled with happy chaos again as faculty and students return to school.

Band camp was a huge success along with football, volleyball, swimming, and cross country team practices. Our cheer and dance teams had successful summer camps, and members of various co-curricular organizations have begun planning student activities for the opening of school. Key Club members had a successful experience at international convention, and student council members learned a great deal from summer workshop in Natchitoches. Campus ministry officers attended a training workshop for student ministers at St. Stanislaus with students from Brothers of the Sacred Heart schools, and we look forward to their taking the lead in campus ministry activities throughout the year. Several students attended the first-ever Brothers of the Sacred Heart Student Assembly in Bay St. Louis and were able to connect with students from across the nation who share the same charism within their schools.

With our increase in enrollment and need for new faculty, we are very blessed to have these teachers join the E. D. White family:

• Ms. Megan Bordelon – music & fine arts Mr. Greg Torres - music• Ms. Alicia Cognevich - English Mrs. Danielle Trahan - English• Mrs. Kelly Sundaram - health Ms. Belynda Vinning - science

Student schedules and important orientation day information were mailed on Wednesday, July 29. The new Plus Portals system has not been consistently running throughout the diocese, and our technology coordinators are working diligently to correct the problems with the software company. Orientation day is the first official school day for students, and it is vital that students are present. Please refer to the 2015-2016 Student-Parent Handbook that has been posted on the school’s website, www.edwhite.org, for the dress and grooming policies. We want the first day of school to be a positive one for our students, so it is important that they are in proper uniform. We appreciate your support in helping your child to adhere to the dress code throughout the school year. If you have any questions regarding hair styles or grooming issues, please contact Mrs. Duet before school begins.

This year, we will celebrate 50 years of uniting our two founding orders, Brothers of the Sacred Heart and Sisters of Mount Carmel, as they became Thibodaux Central Catholic High School. We are so blessed by a rich tradition of faith, family, academic excellence, and community support.

Thank you for choosing our school to be a part of your child’s spiritual and academic journey. May the Lord continue to bless your family.

Sincerely,

Michelle R. Chiasson

Dear Parents,

The beginning of another school year is upon us, and this time of year always brings a tremendous amount of excitement and hope. Only a few short months ago we said goodbye to the class of 2015, and now we welcome the class of 2020, as well as a number of students in the upper grades. Over 790 students will fill the

halls of E. D. White Catholic High School this year, and our staff has been preparing for the past two months.

A number of exciting things have happened over the summer as we work hard to achieve our mission of imparting the catholic faith, promoting academic excellence and enhancing self-esteem.

1.) We have recently launched the new E. D. White website! I encourage you to visit the new website at www.edwhite.org to see all that it has to offer. One of the exciting new aspects of the website is that we will be able to load an unlimited number of videos. In the future, look for highlights from games and concerts and even some of our assemblies.

2.) The installation of keyless door locks on the doors of the main building and Perè Menard Hall have been completed. This will allow us to lock all of these doors during the school day. All students, faculty and staff will use their school ID to access these buildings. All visitors will be required to check in before entering the main building or Perè Menard Hall. The check-in door will be the front door on the main building facing Cardinal Drive. We will continue to do everything that we can to increase the security of our campus.

3.) The portable buildings behind Perè Menard Hall that are used as classrooms received a complete remodel this summer with new floors, fresh paint and new air conditioner units.

4.) Some concrete work was done around the campus, most notably, the walkway behind the main gym was widened for better flow across campus.

I am excited to announce that our school has the privilege of having another Brother of the Sacred Heart on our campus. Brother John Hebert (pronounced Hee-bert) is now living at the Brother’s residence and we look forward to having him with us.

This school year marks the 50th year that the school has been in its current location. In September of 1965, Thibodaux College and Mount Carmel Academy combined into one school named Thibodaux Central Catholic High School. We are excited this year to honor the only graduating class from that school, because in 1966 the school’s name was officially changed to Edward Douglas White Catholic High School.

Finally, I am excited to announce that we are about to kick-off a campaign to totally refurbish all of our science labs. As we reach the 50th year of the school, students and teachers are working in labs that have never been remodeled. Our plan is to have all of our science labs refurbished with state-of-the-art equipment. The newly refurbished science labs will take on the name “The Jeanette Labat Science Corridor,” as the entire center of the school on the second floor will be remodeled. Jeanette Labat was an outstanding science teacher at Mount Carmel, Thibodaux Central Catholic and E. D. White Catholic, but also wore many other hats including serving as academic assistant principal. She has had a profound effect on thousands of students. Look for more exciting information to come!

We are ready once again to continue the tradition of excellence, and I look forward to seeing each of you at school in the near future. Please call me if there is anything we can do to help make the 2015-2016 school year a great success.

Sincerely,

Tim Robichaux

A huge thanks goes out to all of the volunteers who helped with our Academic Enhancement Program this year. We are so grateful for all of the volunteers who read and proctored tests and exams. Without your help, our students would not receive the individual attention that they need.

If you are interested in volunteering to read or proctor tests and exams in the future, please be sure to receive the proper Safe Environment training and updates. For more information contact the Academic Enhancement Director Fran Naquin at [email protected].

The weekly update regards important student information and upcoming events, highlights from academic departments, and good news about students’ successes in academics and in co-curricular activities. Mothers’ Club NewsletterAugust 2015

Q&A with the E. D. White Mothers’ Club As we approach a new year, the Mothers’ Club of E. D. White is excited to extend an invitation to all EDW moms, both veteran and new, to join our ranks and help us make a difference for each and every member of our school family.

What is the EDW Mothers’ Club? What started as a small group of E. D. White mothers seeking to raise funds to enhance the educational needs of our school in the 1930s, has led to $1 million in donations and a thriving Mothers’ Club. Membership is not only open to all of our school mothers, but it also is encouraged. By simply joining our organization, you make a direct impact.

How does the Mothers’ Club help our school? At all times striving to achieve our mission, the Mothers’ Club seeks to enhance and supplement the educational, physical, and spiritual needs of the students and faculty through prayerful support and financial donations, and provides fellowship for mothers of E. D. White students. Some of the most notable ways in which we have met those needs are as follows:

Educational NeedsFunding technology such as Edline, iPads, ceiling-mounted projectors, Smartboards and computersAnnual purchase of Academic JacketsDonations to the Science Lab and LibraryProviding Tuition AssistancePurchase of special items such as P.E. equipment, cameras, and software, and donations to student organizations.

Physical NeedsPurchase of two school busesFunding boys’ restroom renovationsDonations to building fundsPurchase of new student desks

Spiritual NeedsOrganization of weekly Eucharistic AdorationFunding Chapel renovationPurchase of Bibles and Religious StatuesReligion Program AssistanceDonation to the Prayer Garden

How does the Mothers’ Club raise money for E. D. White?Your $20 Mothers’ Club dues fund a sizable portion of our budget. Therefore, just by joining the Mothers’ Club, you are making a difference in all areas of campus life. In addition to dues, the Mothers’ Club raises money by operating the Gym Dandy Thrift Store on Jackson Street. What started as a rummage sale in the 1970s, has grown into a working ministry providing low-cost clothing and home items to those in need, while raising substantial funds for our school. Your donations of unwanted items and volunteer time are greatly appreciated.

Page 7: Parent Newsletter - d2ct263enury6r.cloudfront.net › dlWcTufy8... · Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! I hope that these hot summer months provided time for your family to relax

How can I get involved? The E. D. White Mothers’ Club Board is comprised of 20 parent volunteers who each serve a three-year term, but you don’t have to be on the board to get involved. We need parent volunteers to:

• Work at Gym Dandy on Tuesdays and the first Saturday of the month when we are open to the public. You can also help with inventory on Thursdays.

• Eucharistic Adoration is held in the chapel every Wednesday from 7:20 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. when school is in session. We are in need of mothers to commit to a Holy Hour (or half-hour) throughout the day. If you cannot commit, we invite you to stop by the chapel on Wednesdays whenever you can to spend a moment with the Blessed Sacrament.

• Volunteers are needed to work various events such as Grandparents Day, Mothers’ Club Membership Drives and more.

• Attend Mothers’ Club events such as masses, rosaries and socials.

• If you aren’t able to devote any time to Mothers’ Club, we still encourage you to join. Your membership dues and prayerful support go a long way in helping us meet our goals for our school.

How do I join?To join, please fill out the membership form located in this newsletter, or email us at [email protected]. We also invite you to come visit with us at our New Mom Social to be held in August and our Fall Social to be held on September 23.

There is no better way to learn about a college or university than to visit the campus when classes are in session. It is better to see with your own eyes than to rely on the views of others. Students are encouraged to make campus visits during our summer break. Campus visits (tours, advanced placement testing, scholarship interviews, orientations and/or auditions) taken on a school day are considered educational absences; however, these absences are limited to three days total over the junior and senior years.

Students can also review schools on www.eCampusTours.com. Over 350 schools can be visited online. Students can also begin their scholarship searches at websites such as www.wiredscholar.com/scholarships, www.act.org/fane, www.collegenet.com, www.fastweb.com, or www.finaid.org. Also, please check the Guidance page on Plus Portals periodically for scholarship postings and updates.

Parents may drop off students in the front of the main gym and continue on to Menard Street. For students being dropped off by the band room, please drive east on 7th Street and pull over in front of the band room if possible. For those driving west on 7th Street, please pull over into the shell parking lot near the crosswalk for students to exit the car.

At the end of the school day, we ask that parents picking up students in front of our main gym take a left out of our circle and head south on Cardinal Dr. to 7th Street. No cars will be able to go North on Cardinal Dr. from 3:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. For student safety and because the shoulder of Cardinal Dr. is a fire zone, all cars should enter the circle in front of school to pick up students at the end of the day. Anyone exiting the parking area behind the Student Union should turn right on 7th Street from 3:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Anyone leaving the parking lot behind the band room from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. should take a right on 7th Street. For families with children at E. D. White and St. Joseph Elementary, the E. D. White student should walk to St. Joseph and wait with their sibling to be picked up there. Traffic instruction for days when St. Joseph does not have bus service will be given weeks in advance of those days.

E. D. White Catholic has partnered with PayForIt.net to give parents the ability to place money on students’ lunch accounts with credit cards or bank drafts and monitor food purchases via the internet. Parents may still send checks or cash to the main office to be placed on students’ accounts, but must register on PayForIt.net to have the ability to view the history of food purchases and view the amount of money left in the account.

Parents who have PREVIOUSLY set-up a PayForIt.net account for lunch payments with an automatic deposit must revisit the account prior to the start of the school year. Log on to PayForIt.net and click on “LUNCH” and then “AUTO-REPLENISH PAYMENTS.” Please check your Auto-Replenish expiration date. It should be set for a date in the future such as 6/1/16 to remain active throughout the school year. Also check the ACH or credit card payment method and verify that it is an active and valid account. For credit cards, check that you have the current expiration date.

All students who will use food services at school should have funds added to their account prior to the start of the school year. As per school policy, students are not allowed to make purchases without sufficient funds in the account. Questions regarding food services should be directed to Mrs. Marie LeBlanc at (985) 448-0593 or [email protected].

Our first school-wide Mass of the year will be on Friday, August 21. The Senior Ring Mass will be on Friday, September 4 and will be celebrated by Bishop Shelton Fabre. Please join our school family for these Masses.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place in our chapel every Wednesday from 7:45 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. (excluding holidays and exams). Everyone is welcomed to spend some time with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Classes will visit the chapel as a part of student spiritual formation. Adoration will begin after Labor Day on Wednesday, September 2.

Daily Mass is offered in the chapel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:15 a.m. beginning September 1. All are invited.
