Im Joey. Im a student and I live in a flat in London with three friends. I travel to my
university every day on the underground. I have
lessons every morning, and in the afternoon I
usually study in the library. I work hard, but I
also have a lot of fun with my friends. We dont have a lot of money, so we often listen to music
at home. We sometimes go to concerts too. My
best friend is in a band. He sings and plays the
electric guitar. The guys in the band dont play pop music. They play really good rock music
and sound a bit like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Examiner Good afternoon, sir. Can I help
you?
Student Yes, please. Id like to book your club for a twenty first birthday
party, on Saturday July the
eighth. Id like to invite 16 boys and girls.
Examiner Fine. Would you like any
decorations?
Student Id like some balloons and flowers.
Examiner Im afraid that fresh flowers will be rather expensive.
Student Why? Its July and there are lots of flowers. Ill bring some from my garden.
Examiner Ok. Do you have any preferences
for the food?
Student Yes. Some of the guests are
vegetarian so the menu should
include lots of salads and fruit.
And one hot dish, I think.
Examiner Ok and what about music?
Student Id like a live band to play. Examiner Sorry, but we can only have a DJ.
Student Thats fine but before the party Id like to talk to him about the kind of music hes going to play. Most of my friends are of rock-
and-roll fans.
Examiner Ill give you his phone number. Student That will be fantastic. Thank you.

Elaina Whens that? Luke Thats on the second of November. Elaina Hmm. All that way just for a week. It
doesnt sound like fun. Luke Its fine, Elaina. Its a really easy
journey and Ive done it so many times. I dont have a problem, anyway.
Elaina So will you see all your family at
Thanksgiving?
Luke Sure. Thanksgiving is a family event
in the US. We always have a big
meal together and eat turkey and
pumpkin pie.
Elaina Hmm. I always find those family
parties a bit difficult. I usually argue
with my brother.
Luke I dont have any problems like that with my sisters, so its OK. Its only one day, anyway. After that, I go and
see my friends.
Elaina Do you think youll go back to the US when you finish your course
here?
Luke Well, Id like to go travelling for a bit. I havent seen enough of Europe, but then Ill probably go home and get a job. Actually, Im thinking of getting a part-time job here. Id like to work at weekends and maybe on
Friday evenings ... maybe in a
restaurant.
Elaina Well dont come and work at my place. Im thinking of leaving. Im just too busy to do my college work.
Luke What you need is a holiday! Why
dont you come to America with me and meet my family?
Elaina Er ... No, I dont think so. Not this time, anyway.

Photo three shows a female rafting team and I
think it is the best of all three. I would choose
this photo because the girls look like fans of the
sport. They are smiling and it seems like they
are having a good time. Rafting is an extreme
sport, but in this photo it doesnt look dangerous, so its good for beginners. I dont think photo one would be a good choice. The article is about girls doing extreme sports
and I cant see if the person in the photo is a girl. Plus, bungee jumping may look too risky.
I wouldnt choose the photo of a woman caver. She looks quite happy, but shes a grown-up woman, and the article is for teenagers. Also, some young girls
could be scared of caving.

I went skiing for the first time a few years ago with
some friends. I had a couple of lessons on a dry ski
slope before I went, but I wasnt that confident when we booked our holiday. We went to a lovely ski
resort in France called Samoens. The resort had
difficult slopes for experienced skiers and a lower
area for beginners, so it was perfect for us. The
village was great. It had lovely historic buildings and
some interesting monuments, but there was all kinds
of entertainment too with shops, bars, restaurants, an
open air market, and even an outdoor ice rink. We
stayed in a comfortable chalet which had great views
of the mountains, and we ate in fantastic restaurants
every evening. Anyway, everything was going really
well until we decided to visit the ice rink. I
discovered that I wasnt quite as good at ice skating as I was at skiing. I was skating onto the rink for the
first time when I fell awkwardly and twisted my
ankle. That was the end of my skiing on that holiday!

I made my first skydiving jump last year and Ill never forget it. Let me tell you what it was like. I was
always mad about sport at school and was in all the
school teams. Generally, I like to be fit and healthy,
but I became interested in extreme sports a few years
ago. Now, people ask me why I like doing dangerous
sport. For me, its the idea of doing something thats new and difficult and really exciting.
Anyway, I tried white water rafting and rock

climbing. Then I decided to do something in the
sky. I thought about having flying lessons, but
then I found a website about skydiving. One of
my friends is an experienced skydiver so I asked
him what it was like. To be honest, Im a bit scared of heights, but he said it was the best
thing in the world, so I decided to try it.
I found a good skydiving school and booked a
course. We had an early start on the first day.
Lessons began at eight oclock and we spent the first six hours learning about skydiving
equipment and what to expect. Im not very keen on studying and you might think it was
boring, but it wasnt at all, and all the time I was thinking about doing my first jump at the end of
the day. I was really looking forward to it.
Then came the exciting part. We put on our sky
diving clothes our overalls, our helmets, our gloves and our goggles, and then we got on the
plane. When it was time for me to jump, the
instructor told me to walk towards the exit door.
I wasnt frightened at all, but my equipment and my clothes weighed so much I had to walk very
slowly. I felt the cold air through the exit door
and then ... I jumped.
I fell faster and faster and the wind roared in my
ears. Then, I opened the parachute and could see
the world far, far below me as I floated slowly
down to earth. Those were the most fantastic
moments of my life and of the jump. My landing wasnt the most comfortable landing in the world, but I picked up my parachute and
walked towards the skydiving building. It was a
sunny day and I was smiling.

I think we should choose photo number one. These
terraced houses are not very modern, but they look
comfortable. They are in the suburbs so its easy to get to the city centre. And I think its important to have neighbours.
I wouldnt choose photo number two because it probably isnt very close to other people. Theres a lot of space here and its quite modern, but not very attractive. It looks more like a school than a home so
I wouldnt say its an ideal place to live. Photo number three is not a good idea because its too small. The garden is beautiful, but I dont think it looks very comfortable and its probably very cold in winter. It would be OK for holidays but not as a

Have you ever thought about living on a barge? Marc
Sharp does just that. He bought his barge about three
years ago when he retired from his job. The boat was
in a terrible condition when he bought it, but some
friends helped him to rebuild it and now he lives
there with his dog, Benny, for company. He has a
very small living area on his barge, but theres a bed, a table, an armchair and a plasma TV screen, and
thats all, Marc says, he needs. The best thing for Marc about the barge is that he is able to visit places
whenever he wants. And the worst thing? Well, it has
to be the weather because he still gets seasick when
its very stormy.

Have you ever thought about living on a
houseboat? The fact is, more and more people
are taking this decision. In Britain alone, its thought that there are around 15,000 people
living on boats. So why are people taking this
decision? One reason is that its cheaper. Buying a houseboat is a lot cheaper than buying
an ordinary house. Another reason is that people
want to get away from busy, modern life to find
a more relaxing lifestyle. But is it a comfortable
way to live? I visited Ben, 24, a computer
analyst, and Lizzie, 23, a newly qualified
teacher, on their houseboat in Essex in the south
of England to find out what life is like on board.
When I first got on Ben and Lizzies houseboat, it felt quite small to me, but as I wandered
around, it didnt seem much smaller than my own one-bedroom flat. Theres a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. I also came
across a small storage room and plenty of
cupboards. The couple also have electricity,
running water, a phone and broadband internet,
so working from home and keeping in contact
with people isnt a problem. So what are the best things about living on a
houseboat? Ben and Lizzie told me that they
loved most things about their unusual lifestyle,
but that they particularly like the people. They
say they get on with everybody in the
community and that theres always a party or a barbecue happening on one of the boats.
But are there any problems? DIY, the couple
told me. You cant get away with not doing repairs to your home. The problem is, when
youre living on water, your house is constantly moving around so things are always cracking
and breaking which means there are always
repairs that need to be done. The wind and rain
doesnt help this, either. However, its still cheaper than looking after an ordinary home,
and dont forget its more environmentally friendly, too!
I finally got off Ben and Lizzies houseboat and wandered back through the marina. The sun was
shining, people were friendly and there was a
really nice atmosphere. I felt quite envious of
their unusual lifestyle.

Have you wondered how the Hollywood stars live?
Have you ever wondered where they shop? I took a
trip to Beverley Hills to find out.
Beverly Hills is a small town for the very rich. Its
streets are full of multi-million dollar mansions with
expensive cars like limousines and Mercedes parked
outside. There are shops and boutiques, top class
restaurants and hotels, parks and churches, but there
arent any hospitals, and there are certainly no cemeteries. This is a place for the rich to live in
comfort, to shop and eat and to forget about the real
world.
When I arrived in Beverley Hills, the first thing I
wanted to see was the shops! So, whats the best

place to go shopping? There is a place called
The Golden Triangle in Beverley Hills, which is
a network of streets filled with shops and
restaurants. The most famous of these streets is
probably Rodeo Drive.
The stretch of shops and boutiques on Rodeo
Drive is only three blocks long but its probably the most expensive three blocks of shops in the
world. Here, the most famous clothing designers
in the world have boutiques including Armani,
Gucci and Coco Chanel. Here you can shop in
jewellery stores with names like Cartier and
Tiffany. In fact, Rodeo Drive is home to the
single most expensive store in the world: Bijan.
This place is so exclusive you have to make an
appointment in advance just to go inside. On a
typical visit, Bijans average customer spends around $100,000.
The tourists flock to this part of Beverley Hills
to go window-shopping and to try to see stars
like Britney Spears and Christiano Ronaldo. I
spent the day doing what the tourists do, but it
was the evening that I enjoyed most. During the
day the place can look at bit ordinary, but at
night, its lit up with sparkling lights the shop windows look fantastic. If you are planning a
trip to Beverley Hills, a word of advice avoid arriving on a Sunday. Most of the shops on
Rodeo Drive are closed then, and the usual
crowd of shoppers is replaced by too many
tourists with nothing to look at!

1.38 Zapis nagrania I was travelling around Australia with some
friends last year. We went to some fantastic
places all over the country. For most of the holiday,
nothing really bad happened. We didnt lose our passports; we didnt miss our trains or buses; we didnt stay in any horrible places and the weather was absolutely fantastic, too.
Then we arrived in Sydney and went to Bondi beach.
It was our last stop before going home. We were
staying in a youth hostel there and decided not to
leave anything in the hostel just in case there were
any thieves around. We were going home in two
days time and didnt want anything to go wrong. So, I put everything into a small black rucksack and took
it down with me to the beach.
We lay on the beach all day and swam in the sea. One
of us always stayed with our things to look after
them. So ... in the afternoon when I opened my bag to
get my book out, I couldnt believe it. The bag was empty. Everything was gone: my tickets, my
passport, my money, my digital camera. Everything!
I couldnt understand when somebody had done this because we were always watching our bags.
Then one of my friends, Joe, admitted that he had
fallen asleep when he was on his own with the bags.
Luckily, the police were really good, they helped us
sort things out and we got home.

1.39 Zapis nagrania It was a couple of years ago and it was December
24th. I was at the train station in Chicago. Id been away for six months because I was travelling around
Canada and the US by train and by bus, and now I
was trying to get home to be with my family in New
York. I wanted to be at home on Christmas day.
My train was supposed to leave at two p.m. The
trouble was, the weather was absolutely terrible.
There was a snowstorm and all the trains were
running late. Of course, the twenty fourth is the
busiest travel time of the year in the US so there were
hundreds of people at the station and they were all in
the waiting rooms trying to keep warm. At five p.m,
we heard an announcement that all the trains leaving
the station that day were cancelled.
It was freezing at the station, but I didnt see any point in leaving. I wouldnt be able to get on a bus or even in a taxi, and I wasnt keen on going anywhere on foot in that bad weather. I decided that I could
afford to stay at a hotel, but I thought they would be
full, so I didnt bother phoning any of them. In the end, I spent a sleepless night in the waiting

room with all the other passengers. A lot of
them were angry, but I didnt feel like that. Nothing could change the situation. I phoned
my family and told them not to worry. Then I
spent the night chatting to some other young
people. It was quite good fun, really.
The next day, the weather was better, so slowly
some men cleared the snow from the tracks. At
last, the trains started running and I was able to
get my train to New York. I finally arrived
home late on Christmas night. It was lovely to
see my family, and at least they had saved me
some turkey.

In Britain, very young children go to nursery schools.
Then, when they are four or five years old, they go to
primary school. At the age of eleven, they go on to
secondary school.
A comprehensive school is a school for children aged
eleven to eighteen that you dont have to pay for and you dont have to pass an exam to get in to. A grammar school is a selective school. This means you
do have to pass an exam to go there. Parents have to
pay fees for their children to go to independent
schools. Some schools are single-sex so they are for
boys or for girls only, but most schools are mixed.
When they are sixteen, pupils take their GCSE
examinations. When they are eighteen, they do A
level examinations. At sixteen, they can leave school
and go to work, or they can go to a college of further
education. Here they can do traditional subjects as

Everybody gets worried about studying for
exams but there are some things you can do to
make things easier.
Its important to remember thats its difficult to concentrate for long periods of time. If you
study for too long, youll feel tired, stressed and distracted. So, stop every forty-five minutes or
so and do something else for fifteen minutes.
You will feel much better when you go back to
your studying.
Dont feel that you have to study every day. On the days when you dont study, do something completely different perhaps a sport so that you forget all about your work.
When taking notes or highlighting, only write
down or underline the most important sentence
in each paragraph. Dont spend time copying everything out.
Do as many practice exams as you can, but when you
get to a question you dont understand, dont guess the answer. This is fine in the exam, but when you are
studying you need to understand everything. Stop and
look up the answer. Then, carry on with the practice
exam.

1.45 Zapis nagrania
Not many people look forward to exams, but that
doesnt mean you have to panic about them. Here are some ideas to help you get through. Firstly, before
you go into the exam, make sure you are feeling
calm. If youre nervous, try running round the block for ten minutes. The exercise will help you relax. It
will also get your brain working. Just make sure
youre not then late for your exam. Have you ever run out of time in an exam or finished
well before the end? Its important to get things right in an exam, so that you do your very best in each
question. Firstly, make sure you know exactly how
long the exam lasts, how many questions there will
be and what kind of questions they are. That way you
can plan to spend a good amount of time on each one.
Remember that some questions are more difficult or
are worth more marks than others, so dont divide your time equally between all the questions.
Certainly, dont spend all your time on questions you know the answer to. Answering one or two questions
extremely well and all the rest badly wont get you a good mark!
What you write is very important, but how you write
is important too. Make sure youre writing is neat. It doesnt matter how great your work is if the examiner cant read it. Try to avoid spelling mistakes too! These kinds of errors make the examiners life harder, too.
It sounds obvious, but always read through your work
at the end. Make sure you have ten minutes or so left
at the end when you can read over everything. You
may want to add things at this point, so make sure
youve left room for new ideas. Dont spend ages discussing the exam when youve finished it. Theres no point going through it with your friends. Stop worrying about it and move on to
the next exam. Finally, when youve finished all your exams dont forget to celebrate!

people feel sorry for these animals and they would
really think about taking one home. The other flier

Speaker 1 It rained again last night and the emergency services
are expected to be out again rescuing people from
their homes. Some areas have already been
completely evacuated. However, so far nobody has
been badly hurt, and according to the weather
forecast, there will be no further rain today or
tomorrow.
Speaker 2 Usually people are given good warning before a
hurricane arrives, and if its a really bad one, people are told to leave the area. If you are in your home,
however, the best thing to do is to go to the centre of
your house, away from windows as they may smash
and the glass may injure you, and hide under
something very solid like a table.
Speaker 3 The rest of the day will be cloudy with rain towards
midday and increasing with strong winds by early
evening. In fact, those strong winds are going to get
stronger with possibilities of thunderstorms in places.
I dont think well see the hurricane weather of last month, but even so, you can expect some flooding.
Speaker 4 Yellowstone Park is home to the largest super
volcano in the world. First, let me tell you a little bit
about super volcanoes. For those of you that dont know, super volcanoes lie under the ground covering
enormous areas of land. Later on, youll see thousands of springs and holes with hot water and
steam boiling out of them. Did you know that if this
volcano erupted people would hear it all around the
world. But dont worry! This volcano hasnt erupted for 640,000 years and scientists dont think its likely to erupt again soon.
