    Rielle OswaldArt Show

    At The NelsonLibrary

Te new exhibitionat the Nelson Public

Library nearly jumps offthe wall with beautiul, punchy abstract paint-ings by Kaslo artist RielleOswald.

Oswald describes herartistic process as “ para-conscious ow of found materialsin random moments of free time.”  Her large, abstract workscould also be described as simultaneously complex andsimple, multi-layered, and striking.

Te freedom inherent in these works may stem fromother aspects of Oswald’s life. “My career as a teacher hasgiven me the opportunity to interact with children ages veto 18,” she explains. “Many of the nished works end up assamples of techniques or project ideas for use in the class-room. When we create together, not only do we developour artistic vision but also our interpersonal relationships.”

aking that playul inquiry back to the studio, Oswaldembraces an intuitive approach using a variety o media.“I deliberately lose mysel in the conceptual moment, notin my actions. In the rst step o my creative process thereis multi-sensory and interdisciplinary exploration o tex-tures, sounds, materials, and objects,” she says. “Foundobjects rom the road, the beach, the thrif store, and theorest combine with intuitive painting and collage. Eachlayer inspires the next. Sometimes images are covered, and sometimes they are used in a new way.”

Te exhibition, entitled Simple Pleasures, continuesuntil the end o April.

Equine Assisted LearningI have been involved with Equine Assisted Learning

n the Kootenay’s EAL program or over ve years now.I am ascinated with how it appeals to so many differentchildren. Tings such as communication and body lan-guage are huge skills that we rely on in every aspect o ourdays, affording us great success i we are able to master theprocess.

We were able to see a great example o that this sessionwith a young boy, who when he rst came to us, was not

even able to participate or ve minutes, let alone workwith a peer or ollow direction. However, by the time thesixteenth session was completed, he had dramaticallymproved his communication skills and was able to unc-

tion at a much higher level.

For example, at the graduation exercise he was workingwith another young girl who usually barrels through andtakes over. Te two children came to an obstacle wherethey had to re-halter a horse head, ie: take off the halter onthe statue and replace it with a new one.

Te two children worked together or almost 20 min-

utes and afer our attempts, nally ound success. Teydiscussed the problem between them, made a plan, carriedt out, realized the plan didn’t work, made another one and

carried on, as a team, until they ound success. All thisrom a little boy who couldn’t ocus or ve minutes, oundt diffi cult to interact with peers and disengagedmmediately when something was too hard!!!

I love that this little boy was able to nd suchhuge success whilst working beside older andyounger children, kids with higher and lowerunctioning skills, kids with different personalities

and backgrounds. It never ceases to amaze me thateach individual can get so much and so many di-erent things rom the one program.

We have seen remarkable change in several oour returning kids, building on their skill set eachtime and making great strides in things such asanger management, teamwork, communicationskills, problem solving. All o this rom the com-bination o a objective based curriculum, skilledacilitators and amazing horses.

It really is such a privilege to have the opportu-nity to learn rom such amazing creatures.

Bone Broth – Why All The Hype?If you scroll through social media platforms these days

or read online news like the Huffi ngton Post   you haveprobably seen recent articles on bone broth and its currentpopularity as a super food.

Bone broth has been used throughout history as heal-ing food and as medicine, prized for its overall nutritional

value and healing properties. Several diets such a Paleodiet or the Ice Age diet recommend consuming broth as aprotein source to nourish blood and warm the belly, and

Chinese medicine utilizes bone broth to strengthen thekidneys, support the digestive system, and build blood. Many cultural traditions include chicken soup, whichis known to inhibit cell inammation and mitigate coldsymptoms. Te English have been sipping beef tea anddrinking beef broth since Victorian times.

What makes bone broth so healing is the fact that the longcooking time helps break down the bones and connectivetissue, resulting in a collagen and mineral rich broth that iseasily digested and absorbed by your body. Te high levelof collagen found in bone broth aids your body in rebuild-

ing and repairing connective tissue, such as joints, tendons, ligaments, bone, mucous membranes, and skin. Further-more, bone broth forties the immune system during timesof stress, cold, and u, heals the digestive system, improvesoverall digestion, aids in weight loss and detoxication, andhelps the body recover from illness and surgery.

Nelson now has its own little broth company, Wild PeachPreserves, offering beef and chicken bone broth madefrom local, organic meat bones, vegetable and Chineseherbs. For more info visit www.wildpeachpreserves.com
