Today’s gospel challenges us to remove the blinders of self-centeredness from our eyes and see God right here among the poor, the isolat-ed, the marginalized, and, particularly, those we are inclined to ignore. Every human being is created in the image and likeness of God. Eve-ry person has dignity. We need that humility that enables us to embrace one other as broth-ers and sisters, sons and daughters of God.Yes, we must prepare for our future and our family’s future. However, we cannot fool ourselves into thinking that our legacy will be found in the size of our portfolio or the number of rooms in our house. We will be remembered not for what we take but for what we give. Our legacy will be what we do to make the world a happier, healthier place for all God’s sons and daughters.Oh yes, and then there is that story that the Lord told. A story of a rich man who had ignored Lazarus and who valued his pos-sessions over love for his fellow man. It was the story of a rich man who had no legacy. What is our response to this Gospel? Are our lives so consumed with the pursuit of material things? Jesus reminds us that money is simply a tool used in society. It does not give us true happi-ness. One may have all the money and posses-sions in the world, but remember, you don't take it with you. Jesus teaches us that with wealth comes responsibilities. The responsibil-ity of opening not only our wallets but our hearts to those less fortunate. May we have the cour-age to withstand the temptation of the world to be swept up in materialism. May we never be too busy to reach out to those who need our love. May we have the determination to em-brace love for others, and through others, love for our God.

SENDING A CHECK OR MONEY IN THE MAIL? BEWARE OF MAILBOX FISHING Mailbox Fishing Leads to Check Washing

Mailbox fishing is the process in which thieves gain entry into the interior of mailboxes and steal mail. The purpose of stealing the mail is to obtain checks, credit/debit/gift cards and other personally identifiable information that would allow the thief and others to gain access to your finances. What can I do to prevent mailbox fishing? -When you use a mailbox, deposit the mail as close to the scheduled pick-up time as possible. -Drop mail containing checks and any other personally identifiable information directly at the Post Office or hand it directly to your mail carrier. -Use a pen with pigmented (permanent) ink to write checks out. This ink prevents the altering of your checks. -Whether you use the US Mail or other methods to move your money, remember to make record of the transaction, in case you need it for future reference. Check Washing is a process in which thieves use common household products to alter checks they recently stole out of mailboxes. They then make checks payable to themselves or other parties. What can you do to prevent your checks from being altered? -Use a pen with pigmented ink to write checks. The ink is not easy to alter. -Shred any voided or incorrectly written checks. -Check you account balance frequently to ensure checks were cleared by the establishment that you wrote them out to. Note that thieves usually re-write the check for the original amount your wrote but simply change the payee name. IF YOU BELIEVE YOU HAVE BEEN A VICTIM OF GRAND LARCENY, MAILBOX THEFT OR CHECK WASHING - CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY.
