MARIONOWENTRAVEL
A MOTH FOR AMYMoths are able to use the moon and stars to navigate.
The fear of moths is called mottephobia.
The world’s biggest moth (apart from Amy’s Moths!) is the Atlas or Hercules moth with a wingspan of up to 27cm.
Some moths are notorious for their ability to impersonate other animals. To avoid being eaten, they have evolved to look like less palatable insects, such as wasps, tarantulas and the praying mantis. Some moths even mimic bird
droppings.
In some parts of the world, moths are a major food source for people. Caterpillars are packed with protein and healthy fats, and research shows that 100 grams of these insects provides more than 100% of the daily requirement of some vital minerals, such as potassium, calcium, zinc and iron.
Aeroplane designer Georey de Havilland named 11 planes after moths, including the Gipsy Moth.
Amy Johnson made her epic flight to Australia in a de Havilland DH60 Gipsy Moth aeroplane named Jason, which is now displayed in
The Science Museum, London.

Discover a flutter of magical Moths
A Moth for Amy is an animal sculpture trail with a dierence.
Inspired by Amy Johnson’s de Havilland Gipsy Moth plane, in which she made her epic flight to Australia in 1930, a flutter of exotic giant moths has alighted on walls and plinths across Hull, East Yorkshire and beyond!
Saron Waghorn, East Yorkshire based sculptor and stone mason, created
the original sculpture, from which our flutter of Moths has hatched. The 59 Moths, each measuring almost 1.5m across, have been decorated by artists and community groups, making each Moth a unique work of art. The designs are inspired by Amy Johnson’s achievements, her flight to Australia and the era in which she lived.
We invite you to discover our joyful, colourful and inspirational Moths.
The Moth Collector App helps you keep track of your Moth hunting progress. Find and record all 59 of these winged beauties using this simple and elegant App. The App you will help you to:

A Moth for Amy is an Amy Johnson Festival project. Amy was one of the most influential and inspirational women of the twentieth century. She was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia and set a string of other records throughout her career. Our festival over the summer of 2016 celebrated Amy’s life, achievements and legacy on the 75th anniversary of her death. The festival aimed to raise awareness of Amy Johnson’s achievements as an aviator, as an engineer and as a woman of her time, one of the first truly international celebrities. Amy’s amazing story of adventure, glamour and tragedy was an inspiration to artists and organisations who brought Amy to life in the festival programme with imagination and ingenuity! From kites to comics, Leonardo da Vinci machines to cardboard planes, films to fantasy, the festival re-imagined Amy’s world through the lens of today. But above all, Amy is a fantastic role model for young people in general and young women in particular - a woman of unstoppable determination, engineering and aviation skills.
