The Mediterranean area, although continuous-ly growing, does not, collectively or in its indi-vidual nations, have the energy and relatedservices required to match the needs and ex-pectations of development, and its future can-not be foreseen without important invest-ment. In the coming years, a great commit-ment from the worlds of industry and acade-mia will most definitely be required: researchand development activities need to be plannedand coordinated.

A careful analysis of the Mediterranean areawill be required, in which the tendency of thepopulation is to focus in mega-cities, on hugemetropolitan areas, while existing cities are atthe same time developing into new “smarter”cities. This scenario also sets out a new typeof integration between citizens, public admin-istration and business that increasingly gainsin importance. It is widely recognized thatsuch a large and complex system has no fu-ture without the programmed and optimalmanagement of the System of Nations and

the System of City Nations. As part of its rolein the institutional promotion of research anddevelopment in the fields of energy, telecom-munications, information, automation andelectronics, AEIT promotes its InternationalAnnual Conference with the intention of creat-ing a permanent forum for discussion ofthose topics affecting the socio-economic andtechnological development of the Mediter-ranean area.

Particular attention will be given to smalland medium-sized firms, to whom AEIT ex-tends an invitation to the conference and in-vites contributions on their experience andexpectations. In addition to the topics ofeconomic and social interest, as discussedby authoritative representatives of the in-ternational institutional world, technicalsessions will be scheduled, containing opencontributions, which will certainly be ex-tremely useful. An international commissionwill award prizes for the contributions andthe most interesting papers.
