After a long hiatus commodities are hot again as prices rise. Goldman Sachs and numerous other investors are predicting a new commodity bull market to rival the China- driven boom of the 2000s and the oil price spikes of the 1970s. Investors are embracing the asset class as an inflation hedge in addition to a means of participating in the broader economic recovery as COVID vaccinations begin. “We very much believe that the fundamentals are now in place for a new, structural, bull market to begin,” said Robert Howell, senior research strategist at Gresham Investment Management LLC, the commodities-focused unit of Nuveen with $5.8 billion in assets in the sector. “In the years to come, it’s highly probable that a great many investors will look back on 2020 and wonder how they missed these signs of a new commodity bull market.” Prices have already jumped from their low point in the spring. Copper, iron ore and soybeans have risen to their highest levels in more than six years, spurred by a Chinese buying spree. Not all asset managers however are as bullish as Goldman and PIMCO with JPMorgan Chase & Co. warning last week that the Chinese credit cycle has already peaked, and forecasting lower base metals prices over the course of 2021. The raw materials cycle during the mid-1970s (when the upswing began) until the second half of the 1980s (when it went into decline) became a very good decade, economically speaking, for Latin America. The per capita income of LAC grew around 3.6% per year during the 1970s and then fell to zero in the 1980s, in what the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) called the “lost decade.” Countries with military dictatorships, repudiated for many reasons beyond economic ones, moved toward democracy, while countries with civilian governments, such as Venezuela also underwent political changes which led to the collapse of its two traditional parties and the emergence of the movement led by Hugo Chávez.
