Max Payne: A drama so bad it draws unintentional chuckles

    KATIE BRADFORD

    KOURIER-STANDARD

It is difficult to find aplace to begin with this atro-cious adaptation du-jour, butIm going to try.

After seeing quite a fewmovies, Ive noticed thereis a kind of spectrum ofawful: a way to gauge theterribleness of a film.

They come in many forms;for instance, films like MaxPayne (directed by JohnMoore), dont carry many

expectations, except fromriled up video game fans.

They manage to surpriseyou with their incredible lackof tact, and end up being

funny in a twisted, uninten-tional way.

It stars Mark Wahlbergas Max Payne, a hardboileddetective stuck in cold case.Hes seen some stuff, man,and some things: dont crosshim. At night, he searchesfor the killer of his wifeand child, kicking downbathroom stalls and takingnames, vigilante style.

Then he meets, youguessed it, a Russian gang-ster (Mila Kunis) whose

search for her sisters mur-derer turns them into anunlikely duo. Youll also see

appearances by B-list actorssuch as Chris LudacrisBridges (who, even for arapper, is above this), ChrisODonnell (pretty muchright where he belongs) andsitcom-star Donal Logue(who seems to have gottenlost on the way to the craftservices table).

The acting is terrible.Completely, unbelievably,mind-numbingly terriblewriting doesnt help them

much. It was like a baddetective novel, except liveaction, and with a crappier

    storyline.Granted there isnt much

talking. It's mostly justWahlberg walking aroundlooking pissed off, his bootsstomping on the pavement. The camera becomes overlyfascinated with his boots, actually.

Somehow, Payne neverseems to go anywhere atanytime during the day, either. It is always night. Andeverything is shot with a blue

filter, except during happyflashbacks when they whipout the orange.

The film could be about45 minutes shorter if timedidnt continuously slowdown whenever a gun isfired.

Perhaps Im being a littlemean. It does pay homageto the incredibly successfulvideo game series, and packssome interesting actionsequences; one of themgood.

And its hilariously bad,so I had a good chuckle.
