“Take me home, my dear car”
Las Vegas has always been known as an extravagant city, where you can win and lose a lot of
money and get married on an impulse. Recently, however, it has also become the place where the
first driverless cars cruise the streets. 1.___
How are driverless cars better than traditional ones that need a human being at the wheel?
Once they have become widespread, they will certainly improve road safety. 2. ___ Anyone may
get distracted while driving and – worse still – some drivers take unnecessary risks: they read
maps or talk on the phone. Unlike people, self-driven cars always pay attention to what is
happening on the road, never ignore the road signs and never drive under the influence of
alcohol.
Driverless vehicles will also allow people to save time. 3. ___ Soon they will be able to work,
eat, read newspapers and even socialise while their cars take them to and from offices and
factories.
What is even more important, self-driven cars will offer more freedom for some social groups.
4.___ Driverless cars will also take children to school and collect them from after-school clubs
and parties, making parents’ lives much easier.
Doubtlessly, if self-driven cars pass the driving test in the streets of Las Vegas, they will
appear in other parts of the world as well. Hopefully, they will not only be driverless, but also
powered by alternative fuels to be friendly to both the users and the environment.
A. The disabled and the elderly, for whom driving is either difficult or even impossible, will
finally be able to use the most popular means of transport.
B. 60 per cent of all car crashes happen as a result of human error.
C. Massive traffic jams will finally become a thing of the past.
D. If you see a Toyota on one of Las Vegas’s roads, look carefully – it may be one of the
modified, self-driven models.
E. Commuters often complain about wasting hours driving back and forth between home
and the workplace.
