    2 3 FILMMAKER

Tribe of Idaho in relation to the building of the Bliss Damon theSnake Riverin the 1950s.[11]

Since 1997, Brody has worked on projects in southernAfrica. This began when he helped co-ordinate back-ground research for theKhomani SanLand Claim in

South Africas southernKalahari. This work led to film-ing many aspects of the claim, including its aftermath. In 2008, accompanied by the Canadian cinematographerKirk Tougas, he filmed the beneficiaries of the claim asthey reflected upon how it had changed their lives in thenine years since the claim was accepted. Working withthe UK NGO Open Channels, and funded by the UKcharity Comic Relief, Brody also led projects with and forSan inNamibiaandBotswana. The film work in SouthAfrica led to the DVD Tracks Across Sand[12] four anda half hours of film edited by long-term collaborationora-tor Haida Paul shot in the course of land claims research, oral historyand language research in the northern Cape

of South Africa. This was being released in 2012/13.[13]

    2 Writer

As a writer, Brody has published many essays and a col-lection of short stories, as well as his non-fiction books. His stories, Means of Escape, was hailed byDoris Less-ing, who wrote: I recommend these tales to all connois-seurs of the short story, for they are unique in flavourand style, altogether unusual, and will stay in my mem-

ory like elegiac and lyrical songs or poems. Beautiful. The Canadian writer M. T. Kelly described the collec-tion as Intense, deeply felt, charged fiction...A masterfulaccomplishment.[14] Brody has also written a number ofscreenplays, one of which, co-authored withMichael Ig-natieff, became the film1919.[15]

Canadian philosopher George Woodcock describedMaps and Dreams(1981) as an impressive attempt todispel popular errors about peoples whom anthropol-ogists used condescendingly to call primitive hunters.Brody is also seeking to prove that hunting economies cancontinue to be viable even in modern North America, and

that the way of life associated with them is worth preserv-ing. (http://www.lrb.co.uk/v04/n09/george-woodcock/dreams-of-fair-game)

In 2000, Brody published The Other Side of Eden:Hunter-Gatherers, Farmers and the Shaping of the World. This is a book that puts together experience of and think-ing about many of the fields of travel and anthropologythat have been at the centre of Brodys work. It looks atthe relationship between culture and language, the waythe agricultural way of life is at the core of the mythicideas of human universality to be found inGenesis, andthe way hunting cultures have been wrongly identified

as nomadic pointing out that it is agriculture, withits inherent tendency to produce surplus population andpropensity forcolonial expansionand warfare, that is the

most mobile of ways of life. The Other Side of Edentakesa very wide view of history and cultures, yet is rooted inclosely observed anthropology, much of it from Brodysown field experience.[16]

    3 Filmmaker

In 1975, Brodys filmmaking began with his work forITVs The Series of Disappearing World, going with di-rectorMichael Grigsbyto the Inuit community of PondInlet, where they made the film The Peoples Land, Es-kimos of Pond Inlet.[17] This led to Brody directing doc-umentaries, first in Canada (working withFirst Nationsin many parts of the country), as well as in the UK andAustralia. These include the award winningHunters AndBombers, a film that follows theInnuresistance to low

level flying in Labrador from CFB Goose Bay.

    [18]

Healso made On Indian Land, a film with theGitksanandWetsuwet'en of northern British Columbia, and Time Im-memorial, the opening film in the series As Long As TheRivers Flow.[19] All his work with Canadian First Nationsdepends on a non-narration, intimate style: the people inthe films are the films, which go deep into the experienceand points of view of indigenous peoples and often intotheir grief, and ways of dealing with loss.

His film The Washing of Tears made with theMowachaht-Muchalaht people of Gold River, on the westcoast ofVancouver Island, is an exploration of how one

community looked to their fractured heritage to deal withextremes of dispossession and grief.[20]

Hugh Brody and Michael Ignatieffs screenplay 1919wasfilmed in 1983 and released in 1984. It explores his-tory, memory and the place of psycho-analysis in an un-derstanding of both the self and the 20th century. JohnBerger, in his introduction to the Faber and Faber edi-tion of the screenplay, wrote: Nineteen Nineteen speaksdirectly to what we know about life, composed inextri-cably of the most intimate movements of the heart, acci-dent, and the remorseless movement of history.PhillipFrench, reviewing the film for Londons The Observer

noted: With Nineteen Nineteen, cinemas relationshipto psychoanalysis has come of age. This is the first greatfilm about the subject. The film had a remarkable cast, starringPaul Scofield,Maria Schell,Diana Quick,ClareHigginsand the youngColin Firth.[21]

Brodys films for British television include EnglandsHenry Moore, a project that was conceived by writer andpolitical commentatorAnthony Barnett. It explores Bar-netts exposition of the links betweenMooreswork andthe place of Britain in the world. In 200203 Brodymade Inside Australia, a journey withAntony Gormleyinto the Australian western desert to follow the installa-tion of one of Gormleys most remarkable and visuallystunning pieces of work.[22]

In 200508, Brody made a film in a prison in British
