Last year’s fairs were well received by both exhibitors and visitors who have treated the shows as a source of knowledge about new trends and a measure of the economic situation in the industry for years.

The success of DREMA and FURNICA 2009 bodes well for their subsequent editions which will be devoted largely to uphol-stered furniture. Their concept will be based on renowned and popular events, such as Live Furniture Factory. With tech-nologically advanced machines and equipment working in this Factory it will be possible to manufacture upholstered furniture there. Modern interiors of Pavilion 8A, the so-called four-pack, will also be used to show the latest solutions for the furniture production industry.

Additionally, the programme of DREMA and FURNICA trade fairs will include the most topical issues of energy saving and alternative energy sources. The most advanced solutions for the production of kitchen furniture will be showcased on the area entitled The Charm of Details – Kitchen from the inside.

Please feel encouraged to read DREMA FURNICA News to find out details about the programme and format of the trade fairs for 2010 and information about services that we offer to guarantee convenient participation in trade fair events.

There is good news

from the other

side of the Atlan-

tic. The financial

crisis whose reper-

cussions were also

felt in the Euro-

pean economy is

coming to an end.

President Barack Obama confirmed in his

address to Americans that the worst is behind

them now. Ben Bernanke, chairman of the US

central bank, the Fed, shares this view and

forecasts a recovery in the US next year. That

opinion is echoed by most of the economists

writing for the Wall Street Journal. Such opti-

Market going up, decline is over! mism infected investors on the Warsaw Stock

Exchange where shares of wood and furniture

sector companies such as Barlinek, Paged or

Forte have rocketed which shows the dramatic

decline to be over.

Hopefully we will also see this trend in Europe

soon and so there will be new and better busi-

ness opportunities. This also applies to wood

and furniture industries. Those businesses seek

savings and are increasingly interested in new

technologies and materials. Such demand for

knowledge on the latest offer from suppliers

to the wood and furniture industries should

be reflected at the next edition of DREMA

and FURNICA trade fairs to be held on 13-16

April 2010 in Poznań. They are to provide a lot

of interesting information about the latest

products and the investment potential of the

wood and furniture industries in this part of

Europe. We hope that the optimistic outlook

from the other side of the Atlantic will soon

materialise here and we invite you warmly to

read this edition of DREMA FURNICA NEWS.

In addition to providing you with as much

information on the next year’s trade fair for-

you to look optimistically towards the oppor-

tunities to arise in 2010.

DREMA • FURNICA NEWS 5

In early June you began a five-year term of office as Chairman of MTP Board of Direc-tors. What in your opinion were the key arguments for appointing you to this job?

I believe it was primarily my professional track record as well as my long-standing involve-ment with Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie. I started to work for MTP in 1977 as the depart-ment team leader. Then I fast-tracked my career by getting promoted to a deputy director of MTP Board of Directors, the first deputy of the managing director and finally a managing direc-tor. For many years I was also an advisory to MTP Board of Directors. Having worked for 10 years in Germany, I had nearly every day contact with the German fair associations, which are one of the most acknowledged in the world. Thus I have never lost touch with the fair. MTP Super-visory Board must have also appreciated my long term experience in the field of politics and diplomacy which brought about numer-ous contacts and a slightly more far-reaching business approach. Among other things, the experience includes such positions as team leader of the Commercial Advisor’s office at the Embassy of Polish People’s Republic and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Brussels, deputy minister for foreign economic affairs, Poland’s ambassador extraordinary and pleni-potentiary in Germany, advisory to the Polish President for relations with Germany and eco-nomic affairs as well as deputy minister for foreign affairs.

Why is it worth taking part in events organised by Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie?

Professional approach is our key advantage. Without it we would not have had the confi-dence and trust of our guests, many of whom have participated in MTP-organised events for many years now. According to the most recent survey completed by Pentor Research Interna-tional Poznań as much as 84% of our clients and 60% of clients of other fairs named MTP as Poland’s most important exhibition centre. The research commissioned by the Polish Cham-ber of Exhibition Industry also rank MTP as the unquestioned leader, among other things, in terms of the total exhibition space and the number of exhibitors and visitors.

What also makes Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie unique is comprehensive service. Our customers are offered support with con-struction of exhibition stands, hotel book-ing, lease of conference rooms, professional business matchmaking and technical services.

The key benefit of participating in trade fairs we organise is represented by their marketing and economic effects. The former involve effec-tive and attractive brand promotion and state-of-the-art technological solutions, while the economic benefits come in the form of transac-

How are DREMA and FURNICA different from other trade fairs?

DREMA and FURNICA are Poland’s largest meet-ing for representatives of manufacturers pro-ducing machines and tools for the wood-working industry and components for the furniture-making sector. The fairs attract mar-ket leaders, are appreciated for their profession-alism and competence and are named along-side such well known events as +Ligna or ZOW in Germany.

The distinctive features of DREMA and FURNICA are their modern formula, a comprehensive thematic scope and comfortable conditions for business talks.

Advantages include also the side events attracting crowds of visitors. These are, among other things, Polwood Forum of the Polish Wood and Furniture Industry, a world unique Live Furniture Factory and a special zone – the Charm of Detail.

Live production you have never seen before

Live Furniture Factory is a special presentation space that combines the spheres of interest of visitors of the DREMA fair and FURNICA Inter-national Trade Fair of Components for Furni-ture Production held concurrently. This live, full-scale machinery will produce upholstered furniture that boasts interesting design using cutting-edge technology and materials. The Department of Furniture Design of the Poznań University of Life Sciences will supervise this interesting but logistically difficult undertaking. The Factory will not only provide information about technological nuances, but also integrate the student community: the future staff of the furniture industry.

European Island of Associations

The international format of the DREMA fair will be confirmed at the European Island of Asso-ciations. It will be attended by leading industry organisations from Poland and abroad, which will facilitate establishing many interesting contacts and gaining industry insight in global terms.

Competitions and exhibitions

The 2010 edition of the fair will also feature interesting competitions and exhibitions organised by the Inwestor Publishing House, the editor of Gazeta Przemysłu Drzewnego as well as Meblarstwo and Drewnotechnika monthlies and the Drzewny.pl web portal, and Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie. The 11th Polish Championships in Nail Hammering, with prizes for winners, will stir a lot of emotions. Students will have their "Conjured from wood" competition aimed at promoting professions related to wood processing, whereas stamp collectors fond of wood will be thrilled to see a rich collection of stamps from all over the world held under a slogan „Wood in stamps”.

Jacek Obarski

For small, medium and large woodworking and furniture production companies, using state-of-the-art technologies is the way to achieve competitive advantage as regards operational costs and the quality of final products. There-fore, the DREMA fair is a much waited-for event for the industry in Central and Eastern Europe, and has a commanding position in the calen-dar of professionals looking for the right devel-opment directions for their companies. Visiting the Poznań event means not just an opportu-nity to contact world-leading suppliers, but also a chance to explore technological nuances of live machinery. A rich programme of indus-try-focused events and unique presentations makes a nice addition to the interesting and diversified exposition prepared by exhibitors.

Polwood: European-scale discussion

The upcoming edition of the fair will host the 4th Economic Forum of the Polish Wood and Furniture Industry POLWOOD. Attracting rep-resentatives of leading woodworking compa-nies and industry circles, the forum will address the sawmill and furniture industries, revolving around the issues related to chief challenges for the industry and its development

paths. The posi-

tion of the Polish wood and furniture industry in the European Union will also make a central topic. Representatives of main industry organi-sations from abroad and journalists of industry media from Poland and abroad will be invited to this meeting.

DREMA for sawmill industry

The sawmill sector is a crucial part of the woodworking industry, and the DREMA fair will feature events addressed to professionals from this very sector. These will among oth-ers include the „Cutting-edge technologies for sawmill industry” seminar attended by invited companies and partners from research milieus and presenting the most interesting solutions to streamline production in small, medium and large sawmills. The organisers are hoping for high turnout from companies interested in long-term business development based on economic and safe production methods.

How to save energy?

Timber has an exceptional potential in terms of energy generation. The woodworking and fur-niture industry is the main producer of this ‘eco-fuel’ that is not only used as a source of heat for woodworking companies, but is becoming

an increasingly valuable commodity on the market of recipients from the WBP industry

and individual clients. Issues of wood waste management will dominate the „Save Energy

– Central European Forum of Waste Management

in Wood and Furni-ture Industry”. Enti-

ties looking for modern solutions that meet the

demands of today and enhance effi-ciency are bound

to be interested in this meeting.

International Trade Fair of Machines and Tools for Wood and Furniture Industries

DREMA 2010On 13-16 April 2010, the 26th edition of DREMA Interna-tional Trade Fair of Machines and Tools for Wood and Furni-ture Industries will be held in Poznań. This prestigious event organised under a slogan “Technologies of tomorrow” will give insight into cutting-edge solutions on the market.

With focus on upholstery industry

The FURNICA fair held in Poznań is attended by leading companies that supply the sector of furniture manufacturers. In the complex of modern pavilions of Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie, professionals visiting the fair can explore the latest offer that enables to produce even the most ambitiously designed furniture collections. In the 2010 season, fair organisers focus on components for upholstered and kitchen furniture production.

The upholstery industry is a meaningful part of the furniture sector in Poland that is looking for innovation and ideas for outstanding collections – said Hanna Ochnik–Pawłowska, FURNICA Project Manager. Therefore, this year we offer our exhibitors who specialise in sup-plies for this sector a specially designed space where they can promote their latest products both conveniently and effectively.

It will be possible in pavilion 8A located in the popular „four-pack”: a complex of modern MTP exhibition halls. For exhibitors’ convenience, the organisers have prepared an offer of module stands with standard furnishing, which reduces fair participation costs to a great extent. With

such an offer, an exhibitor does not have to coordinate any formal work related with stand construction; all he has to do is provide appro-priate stand decoration with his own materials.

Live show of upholstered furniture production

The Poznań Fair will once again organise Furniture Factory Live: a special exhibition space where live machinery will produce uphol-stered furniture using the latest technology achievements and materials that boast inte-resting design. This kind of production differs greatly from technological processes typical for solid wood processing in terms of challen-ges faced by designers and constructors, thus making this unique space in Europe even more worth visiting.

Everything for kitchen

Accessories for kitchen furniture production will be a yet another highlight of the April fair in Poznań. Renowned in Poland and in the world, leading suppliers of this sector that is so crucial for the furniture industry will present their offer there. Next year, there will be a num-

ber of new products on the market conducive to offering top-quality products to final reci-pients. The Charm of Detail: Kitchen from the inside with interesting thematic seminars in the arranged exhibition will make an interesting special area connected with the topic of kitchen furniture production.

Wide publicity in media

The organisation of the next year’s edition of the FURNICA fair will be accompanied by wide publicity and public relations acti-vities addressed to professionals from the furniture production industry, with focus on upholstered and kitchen production sectors. Industry media will soon feature press articles and advertisements encoura-ging to visit the Poznań event. Professio-nals looking for novelties will appreciate free admission and free on-site catering. In addition, they will have an opportunity to visit DREMA International Trade Fair of Machines and Tools for Wood and Furniture Industries held concurrently and providing invaluable insight into technological solu-tions available on the market.

Sustainable development is one of the most important and most topical issues relating to all fields of human behaviour and economic activity. In response to this trend, the motto of next year’s 19th edition of BUDMA International Construction Fair will be: “Sustainable construc-tion – economy, ecology, human”. The Poznań fair grounds will simultaneously serve as the venue for BUMASZ International Fair of Con-struction and Road Building Machines, Vehicles and Equipment, as well as CBS – Sports Facili-ties, Amenity Areas, Wellness & Spa.

Sustainable construction

“Sustainable construction” stands for conscious adherence to the principles of economy, eco-logy and ergonomics in the construction indus-try, in order to optimise building thermal per-formance, while ensuring safety, comfort and usability, and minimising the environmental impact. It is important to employ sustainable materials for this purpose, i.e. eco and human friendly raw materials capable of reducing noise, interference and waste. Moreover, such materials must be biodegradable or recyclable after demolition.

The notion of sustainable construction also encompasses integration with the landscape and cultural context. Urban construction projects focusing on maximum space use and functionality, without thinking about tomor-row, now become a relic of the past.

Complementary offer

The upcoming 2010 edition of BUDMA will bring several changes. Housing development solutions presented during the fair will be com-plemented by a comprehensive offer featuring other construction sectors. The comfort of visit-

ing and holding business talks will be ensured thanks to a clear-cut and transparent division of the exposition into the following sections:

• Residential building, social infrastructure and public building development – foun-dations, walls, insulations, windows, doors, roofs, wood, stone, chemicals, tools

• Industrial building – floors, steel construc-tions, halls

• Road construction – planning, geotechnics, aggregates, surfaces, road infrastructure.

“Wood in Construction” Exhibition, Wooden House, Passive House

The implementation of different construction designs in Poland mostly involves the use of conventional construction materials. How-ever, contrary to popular stereotypes, wood has recently been gaining increased attention. The application of wood in the construction sector will be the main theme of the “Wood in Construction” Exhibition, where specialists and enthusiasts from the wood industry will have a chance to talk and exchange experiences with representatives of leading companies and associations.

As in the previous editions, the January fair will feature a Village of Wooden Houses in which state-of-the-art construction solutions will be

Wood in Construction is a Poznań con-struction-related exhibition gaining increased attention.

BUDMA International Construction Fair is among the world’s leading exhibitions dedicated to construction professionals.

The leading theme of the next edition of BUDMA International Construction Fair, which will be held in Poznań from 19 to 22 January 2010, will be “Sustainable construction”.

showcased, including log house, timber-frame house or half-timbered house technologies.

Similarly to wood-based solutions, there has been a growing interest in passive houses, whose greatest advantages include unparal-leled thermal comfort – in addition to optimum stable temperature, a constant flow of fresh air is ensured inside such buildings. Very low run-ning costs of those houses, matched by low emission of harmful gases as a result of mini-mised energy consumption throughout the construction process, help protect the environ-ment. Since this topic is extremely interesting, numerous meetings and discussions will be organised for experts from the construction industry. The next edition of BUDMA will also provide much information about passive con-struction technologies.

Exchanging experiences, expanding knowledge

The Poznań construction fair provides a unique opportunity to exchange experiences and establish strategic business contacts. BUDMA visitors are mostly professionals: architects, engineers, site managers, people responsible for making key investment decisions, sales representatives and consultants, as well as craftsmen. The fair also offers an attractive programme of events, serving as a source of knowledge about the latest technologies and trends in the construction sector. The organis-ers are pleased to invite all interested parties to participate in seminars, conferences and spe-cial events, which are scheduled as part of Civil Engineering Day, Architecture Day, Urban Plan-ning Day, Roofer’s Day. One of the most note-worthy projects will be BudShow, involving the construction of a model house.

One step to meeting in Poznań

BUDMA International Construction Fair has built up a good reputation and a strong stand-ing against the background of similar shows in the European market. Poznań is the right place to meet all major companies operating in the sector of suppliers for the construction indus-try. A comprehensive offer, numerous new pro-ducts and market debuts, and the favour-able climate for establishing business contacts that has become a trademark of the Poznań Fair – all these elements help BUDMA attract crowds of visitors from Poland and abroad (65,000 fair guests in 2009).

EUMABOIS in Poznań

The DREMA 2009 fair in Poznań saw a meeting of members of the European Federation of Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers EUMABOIS.

With the help of Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie, a special press conference was organised where EUMABOIS representatives presented a programme of their “Choose the original – choose the success” campaign which aims at protecting the intellectual property of machinery manufacturers. The campaign emphasises the importance of choosing original machines and technologies which are based on experience, research and commitment.

The DREMA fair, recommended by our organisation, and the developing FURNICA fair are an important meeting we have been looking forward to. We are truly impressed by their quality, says Franz–Josef Bütfering, EUMABOIS President. Mr. Bütfering also expressed his appreciation of presentation spaces organised during DREMA, such as the Live Furniture Factory.

The Jury of the Ambassador of Polish Economy Competition selected winners in four catego-ries: Exporter, Partner to Foreign Companies, European Brand, and Creator of the 21st Cen-tury Solutions.

Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie won the title in the European Brand category for promoting the Polish brand on the international arena.

The aim of the competition is to strengthen the image of entrepreneurs and to promote them by granting awards in recognition of good busi-ness practices in international relations. In addi-tion, the Ambassador of Polish Economy has the task to support the promotion of Poland and Polish entrepreneurs on international markets and contribute to strengthening cooperation between entrepreneurs and representatives of Polish foreign institutions responsible for pro-moting Poland and Polish economy. Winners will enjoy special promotion by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by Business Center Club, the organiser of the competition.

EVENTS | MTP - THE AMBASSADOR OF POLISH ECONOMY

Recognised for promoting the Polish brand internationally

Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie is the lead-er of the Polish exhibition industry. It holds an almost 50% market share in the Polish trade fair market and is ranked as the second largest trade fair organised in Central Eastern Europe. MTP organises nearly 80 specialist trade fairs in Poland and presentations of Polish companies at 50 leading exhibitions abroad. MTP is also a major organiser of conferences, congresses, sports and culture events. There are more than 1,000 of such events held every year on the grounds of Poland’s largest and most modern Poznań Congress Centre.

An important factor affecting the decision of the Competition Jury was undoubtedly MTP’s excellent organisation of logistic aspects of the COP14 climate conference which was held on the premises of Międzynarodowe Tar-gi Poznańskie in December 2008. The unprec-edented event brought more than 12,000 par-ticipants from 189 countries worldwide to the grounds of Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie. Debates were held concurrently in a total of 34 conference rooms, of which the largest had the

seating capacity of 1,388. Special ICT infrastruc-ture was set up for the duration of the Con-ference to enable 2.5 thousand computers to operate all at the same time.

The organisation of the Conference was high-ly praised both by participants and internation-al and governmental institutions involved in the project. Arranging such a large and logis-tically complex event was possible thanks to excellent cooperation between the orga- niser (UNFCCC Secretariat), the host (Govern-ment of the Republic of Poland) and owner of the conference venue (Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie). It was MTP, whose premises accommodate the Poznań Conference Centre, which supplied the necessary infrastructure and service at an appropriate international level. CKP-T is Poland’s largest conference cen-tre of the type. Its advanced infrastructure and experienced staff make it possible to organise the largest and the most prestigious events on the international scale, as demonstrated at COP 14.

The fair gathered together more than 150 companies which sought to establish business contacts with representatives of the wood process-ing and furniture making sector, and showed their products on an exhibi-tion area of approximately 4,000 sq metres. The event was attended by over 11,000 industry professionals from Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine and other Eastern European countries. At the centre of atten-tion were new proposals of furniture-making machines and components.

Emphasis on professionalismThe formula of DREMA UKRAINA & FURN’EQUIP 2009 can be expressed as the triangle: Experts – Product – Communication. Visiting experts were main-ly focused on the exhibition offer, including the most innovative solutions. The fair showcased machines and equipment for the wood processing industry and components used for manufacturing modern design furniture from materials in step with contemporary trends. Visitors coming to the Ukraine’s fair varied, the majority being indus-try professionals. In addition to company owners and managers, experts from the furniture sector and staff responsible for manufacturing machin-ery and equipment, other invited participants were those interested in the organisation of furniture production, investors and developers. The fair showed a host of innovative products giving inspiration and knowledge about the latest technological solutions. The following pro-ducts competed to win the “Innovation” title: RAUMPLUS sliding alumin-ium door systems offered by the Ukrainian supplier ANTA, MDF boards with artificial leather covering by HOMAX, Aristo shelf systems and others.

The next edition of DREMA UKRAINA & FURN’EQUIP is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2010. Coming to Poznań for business usually means you have one or two evenings. Not enough to learn how to explore the city, get to know it and have a grasp of it. Still, it is worth trying. You can either explore it quickly, hurry down the main streets and glance through the guidebook now and then, or you can choose to go for a long walk to find the city’s magic spots, discover its secluded areas and mysteries, and admire mod-ern Poznań with new buildings and breath-taking projects. The location of your hotel will certainly be of importance when it comes to embarking on such exploration.

Important location

The largest group are hotels situated near the city centre and Old Market Square close to Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie. Św. Marcin Street in the centre is virtually packed with hotels of various standards. When you choose one of them you can be sure to have a quick access to the city’s landmarks, including the Old Market Square surrounded by old tene-ment houses with the prominent Renaissance town hall, a nearby monumental baroque parish church and a pink and white 18th cen-tury Jesuit College complex. It is also a short distance to the so-called Imperial Quarter with its emperor’s castle. Behind the castle there is a majestic Grand Theatre building and a beauti-ful park leading to Mickiewicz Square with the poet’s monument.

If you are active

There is accommodation available close to the centre near the Malta Lake in the eastern part of the city where guests can spend an evening in one of the many cafe gardens along the lake shore. There are also opportunities for those who prefer active leisure pursuits. On the other hand, hotels located in the vicinity of the Citadel Park north of the centre can be an ideal option for guests who favour green tranquillity and birdsong over the hustle and bustle of the city. And there is even more tranquillity to be found when you book at the hotel situated in the picturesque Sołacki Park which is full of ponds. You can also venture towards the countryside and choose accommodation in the suburbs of Poznań. With a well-developed infrastructure there is an easy access to the most important city locations and the prices are attractive. If you travel by plane and are not going to sightsee it may be worth choosing accommodation nearby the Ławica airport.

POZNAŃ | HOTEL INFRASTRUCTURE

Even for demanding travellers

Helping hand always comes handy

Given the busy schedule of trade fairs in Poznań it is worth booking accommodation early, es-pecially if you are going to the most popular trade fairs. World Trade Center Poznań provides comprehensive trade fair exhibitor and visitor accommodation assistance and took over all the related responsibilities from Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie as of 1 April. Please note that WTC Poznań has been gathering experi-ence in this area for many years now as it has provided assistance to individual trade fair visitors and trade delegations. In December 2008, WTC Poznań was also the Central Coordi-nator for accommodation of participants in the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznań which proved to have been organised better than any such conference so far. You

can book accommodation by telephone or at www.wtc-poznan.com.pl/hotele.

Whichever part of Poznań you go to there are tasteful hotel interiors and discreet staff for you. What is unique for each hotel is the view when you leave the building. This is why it is worth focusing primarily on the location when choosing your accommodation. This will often be the only opportunity amidst your busy schedule to have a relaxed look at the city you came to do business in.

Arriving in the capital of Wielkopolska we may use several thousand accommodation places of any standard or price group. Poznań hoteliers offer hospitable service, nice atmosphere, excellent cuisine and comfortable rooms. This is all to ensure guests can rest after a busy day to recharge their batteries and explore the city.

Quality is no longer a factor to talk about. It is an obvious thing if you want to compete success-fully on the European market, said Jan Szynaka on receiving the Polwood Award for Investment of the Year 2008 in the wood industry. Szynaka collected the Award from the organisers of the Polwood Forum: Zbigniew Owsiak, Chairman of the Board at Wydawnictwo Inwestor and Tomasz Kobierski, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie.

In the opinion of the Polwood Competition Jury, the Szynaka furniture factory located in Nowe Miasto Lubawskie, which was put into operation in late 2008, best deserved the title of “Investment of the Year 2008 in the Wood Industry”.

We spent over 50 million PLN on building a new manufacturing hall and equipping it, says Jan Szynaka. This may be a lot of money, but I would like to stress that the level of turnover we are going to achieve in this factory will be obtained with half of the labour costs incurred at other factories, for the sole reason that it is equipped with very modern solutions in labour organisa-tion and technology.

During the construction of the new factory, Szynaka’s company took over two bankrupt plants from the Scheider group: MMI Logo in Iława and MMI Interline. They succeeded in securing a partnership agreement with the IKEA Group.

The project in Nowe Miasto Lubawskie was oriented towards our intensive cooperation with IKEA, Jan Szynaka explains. To develop our position, we need a market to sell our products. This is why last year we launched a powerful campaign to promote our products not only in Poland but also on other European markets. We agreed that we had to play it aggressively to avoid job cuts in our factories. For the time being, we are doing fine, though there is great uncertainty about the future.

At present, Szynaka Furniture Factory com-prises six manufacturing plants employing a total of 2,300 workers. Products are manufac-tured mainly for export. Despite the currently observed decline in Polish furniture exports, the company’s owner is optimistic.

I believe that the strength of furniture industry exports which used to be an important pillar of Polish exports is yet to return, said Jan Szynaka during the award-giving ceremony. The biggest unknown is now the German market which used to receive as much as 40 per cent of Polish furniture production.

Germans are afraid of the second wave of the crisis, claiming it will come from the Eastern countries, adds Szynaka. Poland is usually put into one bag with Ukraine, Romania and Hun-gary, though we are showing that the condition of the Polish economy is not that poor after all.

AWARDS | ECONOMIC FORUM OF THE POLISH WOOD AND FURNITURE INDUSTRY

Investments worth over 50 million

The entrepreneur believes that the strength of the Polish furniture manufacturing sector should, as before, rely on innovation and quality, also in terms of design. In Szynaka’s view, Poland lacks good designers and designs that could be presented on European markets with pride. Yet it is absolutely vital to show a lot of interest-ing new ideas, new solutions and new products, which the Szynaka factory has been striving to do mostly on the German market.

Idea behind the competition

The Polish wood processing and furniture in-dustry is perceived worldwide as a major player on the global market. Not only large compa-nies but also small family-owned enterprises contribute to the development of this branch of economy. Poland’s accession to the EU a couple of years ago and numerous benefits derived from EU membership resulted not only in the unification of manufacturing standards but also in establishing equality of opportu-nity on the free Community market.

The Polwood Award competition was origi-nated by people who were deeply committed to promoting good business solution models and developing the wood and furniture sectors in Poland. The aim of the competition is to recognise those entrepreneurs operating on

the Polish wood and furniture market who point out new directions and set industry trends in management, development and innovation, serving as an example for others. The Polwood Award is granted to appreciate companies recording outstanding business results and guided by corporate social respon-sibility. Multiple criteria used to assess competi-tors include issues concerning the company’s relations with various interest groups, as well as problems connected with environmental compliance. Through promoting top business standards, the organisers wish to encourage entrepreneurs to implement activities that are in line with the main idea of the competition. Participation enhances the company’s prestige and contributes to building up the company’s reputation. Since competitors do not apply themselves but are entered for the competition by industry associations and scientific circles, nomination is a great privilege for each entre-preneur.

Last year’s winner of the Polwood Award was IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad. By granting him the Polwood Award, the Competition Jury showed appreciation of the contribution made by IKEA to the development of modern production thinking among Polish cooperating partners.

The PF 087-5 seat lift mechanism allows the user to move the seat in an easy manner thanks to the support-ing springs which have been adapted to the size and weight of the seat. The trouble with seat extension has been eliminated when the synchronizing crossbar, lengthwise adjustable, has been fixed to the mechanisms. This crossbar grabs the seat at any point and allows its re-arrangement. As the seat moves over the floor it does not damage the floor in everyday use. Low cost of the PF 087-5 mechanism has no effect on the furni-ture price though it has significantly improved the sleeping function and simplified the furniture design.

New contact zone

In line with its new format, MEBLE POLSKA

2010 will be addressed exclusively to the

industry. The idea behind it involves direct B2B

meetings of producers and business recipients

interested in their offer. It will enable to tailor

the offer to specific visitors and plan meet-

ings owing to a pool of free invitations and the

matchmaking programme introduced by MTP.

The method of offer presentation at the fair

will change, as well. According to a slogan

„We sell furniture and not stand appearance”

we will try to make stands uniform, whereas

pavilions will be divided into module stands,

explained Józef Szyszka, MEBLE POLSKA 2010

MEBLE POLSKA 2010:

• new name

• new date: 16 - 19 February 2010

• new fair logotype and motif

• new way to present offers and location

• B2B contracting – the Fair motto reads „New contract zone”, which means direct meetings with business recipients (only furniture traders), an opportunity to tailor the offer to specific visitors and plan your business meetings using the pool of free invitations.

„First Minute” offer

Two registration forms have already been launched at www.meble.mtp.pl – one for com-panies interested in presenting their offer, and the other for furniture buyers. According to organisers, companies that complete the forms before the deadline will receive an offer at a special lower price. Completing the form is not tantamount to registration at the fair.

Previous edition

In 2009, the MEBLE fair along with BIURO, HOME DECOR and BUDMA INTERIOR fairs held concur-rently were attended by nearly 500 exhibitors from over 20 countries. Their offer was viewed by 20,000 visitors. The fairs have been so far held in late May / early June. Upon exhibitors’ requests, the MEBLE Fair in 2010 will take place in a different time frame as an independent event with a typically business profile. The deadline for registration is 30 October 2009.

Four days of the trade fair present a good opportunity to find out what the visitor profile is. Organisers can use such marketing research data to improve the event format. 1,500 people were polled in 2009. Among other things, the respondents were asked about their interests and satisfaction from coming to Poznań. The vast majority of the respondents (71%) had visited DREMA and FURNICA before, 6 to 7 times on average.

As much as 84% of the people surveyed visited Poznań on business. They were mainly owners of wood industry businesses employing up to 50 staff. Most of them (63%) read specialist trade magazines regularly, and more than a half regularly read dailies, their most frequent choice being Gazeta Wyborcza. The most popular radio stations are RMF FM and Radio ZET, and TVN was the most popular television station with the respondents. The use of Internet media by the industry is on the increase. 39% of the respondents stated that they were active on the net, 87% in that group used www.drema.pl and www.furnica.pl regularly.

Stand visiting statistics are also interesting. Guests stated that they visited on average 148 stands while staying in Poznań. The major focus of visitor interest (52%) was woodworking using solid wood.

MTP makes it possible for DREMA and FURNICA visitors to register (includ-ing on-line registration). This gives wood and furniture industry profes-sionals numerous privileges such as free entrance to the fair grounds, the catalogue provided gratis and free snack vouchers for Rest&Meet Points. Such service is in line with worldwide trends and contributes significantly to DREMA and FURNICA quality. This is to assure visitors that they will have a comfortable stay and constructive business talks in Poznań.

Trade fair that was a success

The Drema fair that finished in Poznań on 3 April achieved an exceptional success, boast-ing about 800 exhibitors, an exhibition area of 35,000 sq metres and 21,000 professional visi-tors from all over the world.

This year – said Hanna Ochnik Pawłowska, Drema Project Manager – we felt enormous pressure from the participants who held out great hopes for the fair. Nevertheless, having conducted a survey during the exhibition, we realised that the Polish market had not, in fact, been affected by the global crisis and prospects for the future appear encouragingly positive. The trade fair also demonstrated high interest in new technologies and were remarkable for the superb quality of business contacts.

The claim that the Polish market is in at least sat-isfactory, if not positively good, condition was also confirmed by Italian traders and manufac-turers whom we met during the fair and whose opinions are presented below.

FOREIGN CORRESPONDENCE | OPINIONS ABOUT DREMA AND FURNICA FAIRS FROM ITALY

Poland – a market

Claudio Tornati Teknika

Teknika was established in 1998 as a distributor of several Italian manufacturers of woodwork-ing machines and wood-processing equip-ment, but I have been gathering experience of the Polish market since 1992, while work-ing for Piarotto Legno. In the largest format, Teknika has presented its products already for the fourth time and will most certainly par-ticipate in the fair until the expiry of the con-tract in 2012. We have participated in the fair since the first edition. We have decided to hire the entire pavilion to show the perfect wood-working process, from the initial processing of a tree trunk until the processing and finishing of wooden boards. The entire wood-process-ing cycle was demonstrated live. Our main strength relies on the fact that we are one of few companies on the Polish market who are able to deliver “turn-key” industrial plants and factories, from the stage of designing a pro-duction facility, through installing an extrac-tion system to the commissioning of equip-

During the Drema fair, which we reported in the previous edition of the magazine, we met repre-sentatives of some of the wood processing companies selling their products in Poland. We asked them to describe the Polish market. As you will see, there were some surprises in store.

The Polish woodworking and furniture-production market contrasts sharply with Western European economies affected by the crisis.

ment. We have recently put into operation two finished parquet flooring factories, one window factory and a large furniture-making plant for Ikea. Preliminary timber processing projects are also expanding. For example, we are about (on 2 April) to finalise a 3 million EUR contract for the construction of the largest Ital-ian sawmill in Poland. The plant will use equip-ment by Primultini, Storti, Salvador and Uni-confort, to name but a few companies.

The production sector which has given us a lot of satisfaction is palletising and timber drying. In this sector, we enjoyed market monopoly for the entire decade, having sold over 200 timber drying facilities.

As for the Polish market as a whole, I have to say that it has not been hit by the global crisis as hard as other markets. One of the reasons is the type of furniture manufactured in Poland. The sector is focused on medium- and lower-quality products which sell well even when the markets come under greater strain. Indeed, on the one hand, large chain stores have cut their orders for top-quality furniture (sold at high prices due to being manufactured in Italy,

Germany, France, etc.); on the other hand, however, they have maintained their levels of sale in the segment of good-quality Polish furniture, more conveniently priced than their foreign counterparts.

Another important factor is that Poland abounds in mixed forests which occupy two-thirds of the country’s area and yield 22 million cubic metres of soft and hard timber a year. In addition, Poland has factories manufac-turing a complete range of wood-based pan-els (plywood, particle board, MDF board). In a nutshell, Poland has a perfect environ-ment for furniture production.

Aldo Zaffaroni Zaffaroni

Our company has participated in Drema for ten years and I must say that Poland is defi-nitely a good point of reference. It is a market that has been developing well also in recent weeks, though I would rather wait and see if there is a permanent economic recovery in sight or just a short-term upswing. This will

depend on the condition of the Polish bank-ing system, since everything hinges on credits and capital available for use. As for our posi-tion, we do not complain. Considering the fact that our company belongs to the SME sector, a few orders are enough to assess a market favourably. In any case, the Polish market is the same to us as the Spanish one in the 1980s, which means that together with Russia and the Czech Republic it serves as a reference mar-ket. The only disadvantage relates to the logis-tics structures, which are still quite outdated. Despite that, I can say that Poland is a promis-ing market which has already given us a lot of satisfaction and is bound to make us satisfied also in the future.

Christian Salvador Salvador

The importance of the Polish market to our company has been growing. Ever since we entered the market at the Drema trade fair in March 2006, we have been observing increas-ing popularity with customers and progressing sales. The Polish market, which has markedly expanded recently, is now battling the global crisis, at the same time facing a great oppor-tunity due to devaluation of the Polish zloty. Devaluation facilitates exports and production for the country’s domestic needs, in the latter case because of higher internal demand for products offered by Polish woodworking shops which are preferred by customers due to low-er prices. From a certain point of view, Poland could be hailed as a new Spain, from the great boom period in 1995. This is a similar situa-tion, though the Iberian market was affected by strong domestic demand, as opposed to Poland, a country that will be developing its exports due to high concentration of foreign companies. What is more, Poles are a nation with a distinctive culture and are lucky enough to possess a nearly “Mediterranean” mentali-ty. After all, it is no coincidence that FIAT and other Italian companies have been present on the Polish market for decades. One thing is cer-tain, though. To be successful on any market, you need a broad perspective or, to paraphrase Newton’s saying, you must “climb onto the shoulders of giants”. By doing so consistently, we have never stopped and today, in spite of rough times, we are gathering the fruit of our actions.

Angelo Onorio Stemas

Our cooperation with the Imac trading compa-ny began seven years ago when we decided to put our products on the Polish market. A cou-ple of years ago, Poland was one of our major

markets. At present, we are noting a slight fall in turnover, as many large-scale projects have already been implemented with EU funds. Any-way, I must say that despite adverse circum-stances the main problem we have had to con-front was the devaluation of the Polish zloty. Many companies that had already been grant-ed subsidies chose to give them up, as they would have to pay off amounts higher than those initially approved.

All in all, Poland’s economy has been coping with the crisis well enough. For example, our company has been commissioned to deliver machines during the upcoming four months, which seems quite an achievement looking at the general situation on the market.

Generally speaking, small companies, which are more flexible, suffer much less from the downturn than large manufacturers, though enterprises delivering equipment made to cus-tomer specifications often incur high losses due to the increasing tendency of failure to collect ordered machines which, being tailor-made, cannot be sold to other customers.

Marco Morbidelli Fam

As for the Polish market, I am satisfied. I see a greater mobility than on other markets and customers with a clear vision of that they want. In a nutshell: Poland is still a country to make business in, despite the devaluation of the Polish zloty. Obviously, competition is strong,

mainly from German manufacturers who have always found partners for cooperation. “Made in Italy”, however, is still going strong and those that make high-quality goods could use it. We say that if we are able to offer innovation and good service, the moment the market goes up again, we will be the first to reap the fruit. The most important thing is to consist-ently maintain the highest quality level.

Giuseppe Maggi Kolmag

Without any doubt, Poland’s growth potential is much better than that of other Eastern Euro-pean countries, which is particularly conspic-uous if you analyse signals of the economic upturn. There are companies who would be willing to make investments but are ultimate-ly too afraid to do so, being unsure of how the macroeconomic situation will develop. In any case, by focusing on quality you can achieve good results, since high quality is appreci-ated everywhere and at any time. Our com-pany has been operating in Poland under its new Kolmag brand, using the 30 years’ expe-rience gathered by Carrozzauto, though with a fresh managerial spirit. Our extensive expe-rience has been appreciated in all the markets of our presence. This is why our woodworking machines are ordered from the East as far as Latin and South America.

REPORTS ANALYSES | TRADE FAIR WEBSITES

Websites: best source for DREMA and FURNICA information

It is no longer a new trend in marketing for firms to be present on the Internet. Such presence has indisputably become one of the key parts in building a positive corporate image. The web-sites used by Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie for its own purposes include more than 40 de-dicated specialist sites for individual trade fairs. Each of them is unique both in terms of their graphics and use. Their common goal is to pro-vide users with as much information as possible about the company, its products and services.

This year’s research by Pentor Research Interna-tional for MTP shows websites to be the prima-ry and most important source of information about trade fairs for four in five exhibitors. As many as 80% of respondents name the Internet as their source of information about trade fair events and state that they use it very frequently.

The same applies to DREMA (www.drema.pl) and FURNICA (www.furnica.pl) websites which

We can hardly imagine a modern firm without a website which is often a limitless source of information about the firm and its products. This is apparently confirmed by MTP’s research.

provide a collection of news about these trade fairs which are so important for the wood and furniture industries. MTP’s 2009 visitor poll shows that 32% of the visitors obtain informa-tion about trade fairs via product websites. Users search for information on exhibitions, agendas and products showcased at trade fairs.

Organisers use websites to publish information about the formula of the upcoming fairs includ-ing numerous details concerning special display space and seminars. In addition to general infor-mation the websites contain details of the organ-isers’ offer, catalogue of exhibitors, list of new innovative products or services and interesting downloads. The sites have a Press Corner which is a very important section where the media can find interesting ready-to-publish press releases.

The interest in DREMA and FURNICA official web-sites is growing each year. There were 250,000 unique visitors in 2009, which is a satisfactory result given the specialist character of these sites.
