    Introduction

    Whats This Book About?

    Ecology

The Green Dogs Handbook was created to try to answer some questions abouthow to raise a healthy, happy dog while at the same time reducing your friendscarbon footprint. This is a handbook that has ideas and places you can start withyour dog, and hopefully some of the ideas you nd here will inspire new ideas youcan use with your dog.

There are a couple of approaches we use in the book.

    1. We approach dog care naturally in most cases, except where there are seriousissues with no other choices.

    2. We approach feeding dogs in a vegetarian manner, unless there is a compellingveterinary reason not to.

We believe being green includes being vegan and reducing the chemicals weuse on our dogs. Veganism can work for most dogs, and certainly the productssuch as collars, leashes and dog beds can be locally sourced and vegan to

minimize the impact they have on our resources and the environment.

But there is another benet to having green dogs. The increased lifespan yourdogs will enjoy as they eat home-cooked human-grade foods, have decreasedincidence of weight problems and dental problems associated with commer-cial dog foods, and the reduction of problems associated with chemical treat-ments for insects, grooming products, and other products they are exposed to.

We hope you enjoy reading these ideas for decreasing your dogs carbon paw-print and increasing his or her health!

    Asante!

    How Dogs Digest FoodAnatomy

The anatomy of a dog is similar to humans. Some of the dierences between human and dog digestion are:

Dogs intestines are much shorter. Food moves through their systems much faster than through a humans.

Dogs stomach is more acidic-as acidic as battery acid! Food remains in the stomach longer to break it down.

Dogs teeth and saliva dier, they cant move jaw back and forth to grind food.

Dogs are in the order Carnivora. This order is varied and comprises both carnivorous and omnivorous mammals. The dogfamily is the Canidae. Canids are both carnivorous and omnivorous.Dogs have specic nutritional needs that can be met with vegan diets, but may need supplementation. Do your research andremember that many people are not fans of change. Veganism frightens them. So make sure the research you do is balanced.I have had so many people tell me how dangerous it is for my dogs, how wrong etc. My dogs are healthy and happy as veg-ans and may be more healthy than dogs on commercial food diets.

Get both sides of the story before you change your dogs diet. I am condent that once you do the research you will nd thatyour dog will thrive on a carefully planned vegan diet.

Four of the most often cited nutritional concerns for vegan dogs are:

Protein: Needs can easily be met with seeds, nuts, soy and beans. Found in adequate amounts in commercially availablevegan foods. For home-cooked meals, all should be very well cooked so they are easily digestible.

L-carnitine: Essential amino acid found in esh. Supplemented in commercial vegan dog foods. Can be supplemented withvitamins for home-cooked meals.

Taurine: Essential amino acid found in esh. Supplemented in commercial vegan dog foods. Can be supplemented with vita-mins for home-cooked meals.

B-12: Vitamin found only in animal products. Supplemented in commercial vegan foods. Can be supplemented with vitaminsfor home-cooked meals.

Dogs require more protein than humans.

Dogs do not require vitamin C. They can manufacture it.

Dogs do not have the same enzymes to break down carbohydrates, so they need them to be processed.
