Lancia is one of the most important Italianautomobile manufacturers, founded in 1906by Vincenzo Lancia which became part of theFiat Group in 1969. The company is known

for the production of high-quality luxury cars, its rally

heritage, and the use of Greek letters for its modelsnames. The nameLanciahas always been synonyouswith Italian style, luxury, comfort and innovation.Tipo 51 / Alphawas the first Lancia to have been everproduced, but Lancia Lambdais the car which wouldmake the manufacturer famous. The Lambda waswell-known for its technical innovation, the first car tohave been built with a monocoque chassis. It has alsoreceived many accolades for its stylish design and itsreliability.There are many models that have made automobilehistory through the years: Aprilia(one of the first cars to

have been designed in a wind tunnel), Aurelia(the firstproduction car to have been powered by a V6 engine,also one of the most beautiful cars in history), Ardena,Flavia, Flaminia, Stratos HF(the first Lancia supercar,three-time WRC Champion) etc.The Lancia Stratos Zero, is a concept car designed byBertone and features radical styling, rally car mechanicsbut also bizarre ergonomics. This has has often beencited as a masterpiece of Italian design, and also anautomotive jewel, as it is only a prototype.

THE CONCEPT

McLaren-Honda R1 brings the concept of old-school racing back,to the future.This racing car is one of many contestants that are going to

participate in an endurace racing champioship, whose purpose is to generateelectricity to power future cities, with races running on old reconstructed racetracks such as the AVUS or the Brooklands Raceway. Cars are going to berun by privateers who take the chassis and body shell (both manufactured via3D printing) from a constructor and the eco-firendly powertrain from another

supplier, thus lowering the costs and rescuscitating the old racing spirit. The caris driven by the driver, who is navigated by his co-driver. Not only has the co-driver navigational duties, but he is also responsible for team communicationand aerodynamics management.Eagles served as the main inspiration for the aesthetics (both for the interiorand the exterior of the car ). Due to their natural aerodynamic properties,eagles have always been a subject for studies by mankind for a very long time.The concept of active aerodynamics in the project (with front, back and sidewings movable) is borrowed from the basic aerodynamic principals applied inthe flight of the eagle.

Due to the great instensity of the race,driver and co-driver share the same car.However they sit on two separate cock-pits. Communication within the car ismade through microphones, so that thedrivers do their respective duties con-centrating only on the race.

The rigid racing seats, are coveredin a smart, super-adhesive ma-terial inspired by geckos feet.

This kind of fabric provides optimal gripeven in contact with very smooth surfac-es (such as glass). The fabric eliminatesthe necessity of seat belts, as the driv-ers remain attached to their seats even

in an event of a crash. Drivers are alsoprotected by the helmet attached to thecar, which provides both drivers with in-formation regarding the car and the race(Augmented Reality screens are installedinside the helmet, for the drivers to havea constant Head Up Display during therace).The co-driver is responsible for thenavigation of the racing track, team-to-car communication, and active aerody-namics control. By moving the shifts, heis able to operate both front, back and

side wings of the car.natural aerodynam-ic properties, eagles have always been asubject for studies by mankind for a verylong time. The concept of active aerody-namics in the project (with front, back andside wings movable) is borrowed fromthe basic aerodynamic principals appliedin the flight of the eagle.

THE SCENARIO

Future, Earth 2110: Our planiet is over-populated and humans are looking for otherplanets out in the galaxy, and also buildingnew homes in space stations. Inspired by

futuristic Sci-fi movies, humans have re-invented thelegendary race of 1000 Miglia. The race will takesplace in the cosmos. The starting point is on Earth, andthe destination is a new human colony in the cosmos,and back. The journey is 1000 space miles unit long (anew unit of length used for space journeys).Mercedes-Benz AMG PetronasTeam have launcheda new vehicle to campaign the the gruelling race. TheSLG AMG Racing Shuttle has been purposely designfor the new 1000 Miglia. The vehicle absorbs notonly, solar energy but it also collects space dust, whichis then used for producing kinetic energy and scientific

examination, thus making the race an instrument ofscientific exploration as well.In the future, space stations will be a common object inthe cosmic landscape of the future. The can be used ascheckpoints or even as destinations. Racers will haveto follow a certain path which reminds of he old trackof1000 Migliafrom Brescia to Rome. Tracks circularblue lights guide the pilots. If a racing shuttle goes off thecourse, lights go red and the pilot gets a time penalty.

The 1000 Miglia was an open-road endurance

race which took place in Italy twenty-four timesfrom 1927 to 1957 (thirteen before the war, elevenfrom 1947). Like the older Targa Florio and later theCarrera Panamericana, the MM made Gran Turismo(Grand Touring) sports cars like Alfa Romeo, BMW,Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche famous. The racebrought out an estimated five million spectators. Itwas one of the most important endurance races inthe history of motorsport.TheSLG AMGdraws inspiration from the successfulsilver arrows of the 1930s and 1950s, such asthe great 300SLR, which won the 1000 Miglia

in 1955 (whose record was not beaten in the lasttwo years the race was held), and World SportscarChampionship in the same year, driven by SirStriling Moss.The space opera movie franchise of Star Warsserved as the main inspirational source for thedevelopment of this futuristic scenario in whic the1000 Miglia race will take place. Hence the futureof mankind might be directed to new adventures inthe outter space, racing in cosmos may be possible.
