For many British and Americans, Christmas begins on 25th December, Christmas Day. However, Catholics start celebrating Christmas the day before, on 24th December, Christmas Eve.

It is also the day when children prepare cookies and milk for Santa Claus and some hay for his reindeer. Then they hang stockings at the fireplace.

On Christmas Day children find a lot of presents in their stockings and under the Christmas tree. The whole family gather round the table to have Christmas dinner; roast turkey, potatoes, Brussels sprouts and Christmas pudding. After dinner they pull crackers, which look like big, paper sweets, and find paper hats, funny toys and wise sayings inside.

The houses are decorated with ivy, holly and mistletoe. The next day, 26th December, is called Boxing Day. Many years ago people used

to give presents in boxes to their servants on that day.
