    Theres Nothing Like a Sale!

What is it about a sale that is so exciting? Dress sale, book sale, yard sale or camel sale; wecan never resist showing up to see whats on offer. Simply the word SALE is enough toget our blood circulating faster. Theres some element of discovery and just plain fun aboutbeing there to scout out the bargains. It doesnt matter whether we were looking for some-thing specific in the first place. Most of the time its better not to have an agenda and just gowith instinct, you never know what you might find. The thrill of the hunt is so intense thatwere often out there before the sale starts just sussing out the territory. It doesnt alwaysmatter what you buy as long as its a deal that you got before someone else could corner it.

Buying at a bargain price just makes it all the better. It eliminates all excuses to restrainyourself. These small sales events are part of our culture and were all doing our patrioticduty to get a good deal.

When I arrive at a sale its with a familiar rush of adrenaline. Some rare item or unexpectedgem suddenly connects to a latent idea thats been lurking patiently at the edge of my psy-che. Havent I always wanted the chance to play the accordion or own four extra cupboarddoors? Just the fact that I can buy such an array of trinkets and clever things for a pittancemakes me practically giddy. How can I be too far wrong letting myself go in a circumstancelike this? A whole box of old National Geographics? Why that shouldnt be over looked, notat twice the price! After all, if I wasnt meant to go to sales, I wouldnt have bought a truckin the first place. Ill drive away as a very smug and happy person. I feel like I won some-thing.

Unfortunately, as with all forms of over indulgence, there comes a hangover. There is therecurrent doubt that appears in the next few days that the great finds I have captured throughmy clever efforts may in fact be just another couple of boxes of junk. With remorse I willadmit to myself then that I will never play the accordion that I bought and really have nopurpose for the cupboard doors let alone the punch bowl with 12 matching cups that I nowown. But it was such harmless fun and I felt so excited with my small conquests. It was anhour of adventure in my otherwise mundane life. Whos going to fault me for these littleextravagances? I had such a good time! On second thought, instead of the cupboard doors Ishould have bought the extractor fan. Darn! Next time Ill be much sharper.

Perhaps next year well all have forgotten where this stuff came from. You may discover

that twinkling accordion in my yard sale and remember that you always wanted to play one.

I know just how youll feel and I promise you, Ill make you a heck of a deal. I might even

lower the price if you take the punch bowl, too. JK

    How to Make Hanging Baskets

Lush hanging baskets are a great addition to outdoor dcor. Howeasy are they to make and what does it take to make them flourish?

    1. Gather all the supplies. Place the wire basket inside a largeflower pot to help support it while you work, especially if it hasa round bottom. Make sure that you can work from all sides.

    2. Mix your soil and fertilizer together. Add any additions, such asbone meal. Place your moss into a bucket or bowl of water to soak.

    3. Move plants Around in an arrangement until you have hit upon a colour assortment anddesign that appeals to you. Dont be afraid to mix colours and always add in a pure

green element, such as trailing ivy. A hanging basket is viewed largely from the bottomand sides, so plan your design with that in mind.

    4. If you are making your own basket liner from moss, gently squeeze the water from itand press it into the container bottom and wallpaper the sides, pressing from the insidewith one hand and on the outside with the otherwork toward a 1 thickness or more.Overlap the layers to keep the soil from seeping out.

    5. Match plants for similar light, moisture and height requirements. Plant suggestions in-clude: silver licorice, trailing lobelia, sweet alyssum, hanging begonias, dwarf helio-trope, variegated ivy, trailing fuchsias, creeping jenny and coleus.

    6. Plant in layers and stagger the arrangement in each level. Add a row of plants in thebottomivy would be good. Make some slits in the sides and gently pull some strandsthrough. Place a layer of prepared soil over this planting and press to remove the airpockets. You can nestle a small lid into the middle to act as a saucer to help catch wa-

ter. Add more prepared soil. Place another row of hanging or trailing type plants. Youcan make a few more slight slits in the sides of the basket and send hardy shootsthrough (wrap top of plant lightly in plastic wrap and pull through). Cover well withmore soil. Pinch plant stems back if needed. Plant your last layer, which is reserved forstraight-up blooms or plants with height. The soil should come to about 3/4 below thetop rim. Space 3 to 4 inches apart. pg. 4
