National Endowment for Democracy,

It is with pleasure and pride that we present this analysis and report of activities for our projects in Poland, Ukraine and the Balkans. These ambitious and rewarding international projects would not have been possible without the many years of your support, cooperation and financial assistance.

We hope that you will find the report interesting and that it may prove useful to you in promoting the Endowment’s admirable work for democratic initiatives worldwide. We are particularly appreciative of your sustaining our efforts to share the Polish expertise and experience gained in the post-1989 period of economic and social transformation. We believe this project has significantly contributed to the development of civil society in Ukraine.

We are deeply grateful,

“Promoting Local Civic Education and Activism”

Post-communist societies are faced with a wide range of problems which need to be resolved in an ongo-ing and consequent manner. Ukraine has made great strides in political-economic development, but there still is much to be done so that the average person understands his or her role in the creation of a viable democracy. The formation of a responsible, civil so-ciety which looks after its citizen’s needs is a long, difficult process.

In 2006 in the project “Public Achievement” in Ukra-ine, we invited three groups of 24 teachers each from Crimea, Kharkov, Ternopil and Uzhgorod regions to Nowy Sacz for a week training. In this manner we hoped not only to provide an opportunity to learn about the Public Achievement (PA) program, but at the same time to encourage closer contacts between Eastern and Western Ukraine. Participants departed convinced of the usefulness of PA in building a demo-cratic society and ready to begin work with groups of young people at home.

MTO continued this project in 2007 in cooperation with the 4 partner organizations. The first quarter of the “Promoting Local Civic Education and Activism” cross border project in Poland and Ukraine was spent doing PA monitoring visits and follow-up workshops. From April 18 – May 6, 2007 MTO trainers covered 5500 km in Ukraine and visited schools and partners in the three main regions included in the project: Uzh-gorod, Kharkov and Crimea. From June 12-15, 2007, MTO trainers returned to Ukraine and met with PA groups in Ternopil and ran a workshop for teachers in that region.

Our time in Ukraine was divided between meeting with PA groups and running workshops about PA. In each location the plan was slightly different. The qu-ality and availability of the PA groups differed widely. By the end of June there were 30 PA groups active in Ukraine (3 in Uzhgorod region, 14 in Kharkov region, 5 in Crimea, and 8 in Ternopil region) as a result of the training of 68 PA mentors. One of the main im-pressions we had from our month in Ukraine is that Ukrainian schools are very active – there are many activities, events, and initiatives which make students do many things – for their school and for others. This is obviously fantastic and we enjoyed learning about all aspects of school life.

However, the main goal of our visit (in addition to the short workshops) was to monitor the results of the PA training in Poland. So we had to ask ourselves the questions: Is what we are seeing the result of our

training or has it been taking place in the school be-fore the mentor came to Poland? If it started before, did the PA training give the initiative some added be-nefit? Did the PA group really choose the problem from other problems that were discussed or is this ac-tivity something that they would do anyway? Many of these questions we asked each group during our monitoring visits. To make it easier to get a clear pic-ture of how effective the PA training was and how it is being implemented in Ukraine, we came up with a short questionnaire for the local coordinators to use when they are monitoring each group. A detailed de-scription of each PA group and pictures is available on the PA Unite website: www.paunite.org.

The composition of the participants in the workshops was very diverse. When we wrote the project, we had first envisioned the workshops as a way of deepening the understanding of PA and addressing some of the issues that arise as one begins to implement the pro-gram. It turns out that more time was spent spreading the idea of PA within the region and confirming the work of those who had already participated in the pro-gram. We were quite flexible and able to tailor the workshops to meet the needs of the target audience and in the end we were quite satisfied with the work-shop results.

Description of activities in each location:

Uzhgorod Region

The time in Uzhgorod was intense. We had a meeting at the IATP office in the town library where we met with a group of about 15 teachers from Uzhgorod. This meeting enabled us to introduce the program to a new group of teachers. We also had a workshop in Yashinya with a group of 24 teachers and students from Yashinya, Chorna Tisa, and Rakhiv. Although only few of the participants had been at the PA training in Poland, the ones that had were able to share good examples of PA and motivated the newcomers.

It was also hugely beneficial to have REAL PA mem-bers, students from Yashinya, who were doing PA and able to share their accomplishments. We also heard from a PA group in Rakhiv and visited a PA group in Chorna Tisa which had managed to rebuild a pede-strian bridge connecting school to the village after it had been washed away by the flood.

Kharkov Region

We had a very productive time in Kharkov. We had two full days of workshops with a group of 25 teachers from Kharkov and Oblast. Participants came from a wide range of schools in the region. Several came from Zaporozhe to learn more about PA. A handful of them had participated in Poland and guided the others in several activities. There were many dynamic discussions. In group work, one of the PA groups came up with an initiative that closely resembled Junior Achievement and this lead to a deeper discussion of the common good and the real tenets behind PA. The atmosphere throughout was positive and there was palpable enthusiasm for implementing PA in more schools. We are especially pleased that the FAIR will be held in Kharkov as it is the region which is most active and will give even more exposure to the program on a city-wide level.

We visited about 14 REAL PA groups of active enthu-siastic kids who knew exactly what they were doing

and why. We got to talk to all of them and took lots of pictures for the website. It was very motivational as the Ukrainian PA groups were eager to learn what their peers in the Balkans and beyond were doing and hoped that there might be more cross-border initiati-ves possible thanks to the sharing of information.

Crimea

The two days of workshops in Bakhchisaray went re-ally well. The group of teachers and school directors (2 from Simferopol) and a local school superintendent were all VERY active and engaged. We thorough-ly enjoyed ourselves and we believe they did too. A teacher from Dnipropetrovsk came as well as two participants from Dhankoi, a few from Simferopol and the rest from around and in Bakhchisaray. It was fascinating to see the issue of Junior Achievement and the common good come up again. It lead to a thoro-ugh discussion of the spirit of PA.

We visited 5 PA groups in and around Bakhchisaray and were most impressed by the youngest PA mem-bers who knew what they were doing and why. The ”Plant a Tree” group from the Special School made a concerted effort to protect the local environment by planting trees around the school and making an agre-ement with a local business to look after them during the summer. Another group “Sprout” worked to pre-serve and remember Crimean Tatar culture and history by creating a small museum at school and collecting artifacts from families and neighbors. The result was impressive and collection so large that they will soon be moving to a larger place provided by the town.

Ternopil Region

The last seminar took place in a village “Zazdrost” (“Jealousy” in English) 30 km from Ternopil. 24 me-thodologists from different schools throughout the re-gion attended. None of them had heard of PA before. Since they were responsible for extra-curricular acti-vities at their respective schools, they were the ideal target group for the workshop. They gobbled up the entire program and left with a specific idea of what PA is and how to begin doing it in one’s school. Of course, 2-days is nowhere near enough time to really become a proficient PA mentor, but our local coor-dinator, will be available for assistance and further information.

The real motivation and what we believe will really encourage the teachers to try the program, was the presentations by 8 PA groups. Members of all PA groups from the region came to the village at the end of the workshop and presented their work and accomplishments. The workshop participants were able to ask questions and clarify. From their inquiries it was clear that many of newcomers to the program did understand the spirit of PA!

PA FAIR in Kharkov

An even better indication of the true success of the project is the culminating Kharkov PA FAIR that was the focus of the second quarter of the NED-sponso-

red project. The purpose of the FAIR was three-fold: to popularize the concept of Public Achievement, to enable PA groups to share their successes and ideas and to foster closer ties between Eastern and Western Ukraine. We feel the FAIR was successful on all co-unts.

The Public Achievement in Ukraine FAIR was held in Birka (near Kharkov) from September 14-16, 2007. It was co-organized by the Association for Sustainable Society Advancement (ASSA) from Kharkov, Ukraine and MTO. This meeting brought together students, teachers, school directors, and educational authorities from the regions of Kharkov, Bakhchisaray, Zaporozhe and Ternopil.

At this FAIR, 120 participants (representing 31 PA groups) had the opportunity to share their experiences in democracy-building in their communities, deepen their understanding of the Public Achievement pro-gram, and begin to work on cross-regional PA initia-tives. We were especially pleased to welcome 3 new groups from Zaporozhe which had been created as a result of the workshop held in Kharkov in April as well as 2 more groups from Bakhchisaray created after the mini-workshop there in May. This result is parti-cularly significant given the brief amount of time that elapsed (not counting the summer vacation when no PA work was being done). We are confident that more such groups will spring up as time goes on. Looking at quality and participation, we were very disappo-inted that there were no participants from Uzhgorod

Nila Nakonechna, the project coordinator for Ternopil region.

Participants proud of their achievement.

region. In spite of the Kharkov and MTO organizers’ best efforts none of the mentors could come.

There were 6 seminar sessions with 3-4 groups of participants in each. The seminars were carefully designed to give the groups opportunities to work together and deepen their understanding of PA. Usually the whole PA group (mentor and two students) met and worked together with other such groups. In Seminar 2, however, mentors met together to discuss and learn more about their role in the PA process. The students met in groups divided by age to learn more about the core concepts underlying the PA process. In the seminar 4, the groups had the opportunity to share their work publicly and celebrate their success. This was rewarding for all. What was striking was the degree of seriousness and respect that participants showed to one another. Since the seminars were divided by area of interest (health, environment, human rights, freedom of speech, European Union, etc.), there was a wide range of age and geography. PA groups from 4th and 5th grade presented to their colleagues from high school and vice-versa. As a wrap up groups came up with a list of best practices. It was especially moving to hear participants praise one another’s work and talk about how a method or idea might be used in their own work. At that moment it didn’t matter whether someone was from Crimea, Ternopil or Kharkov. Students were able to objectively discuss serious work.

There were two seminars which involved active work on site (instead of presenting and discussing what had been done before). The “PA and Us” poster allowed each group to show their vision of Public Achievement and summarize its essence. The results were impressive and colorful. The final activity involved decorating large boxes to represent ideas for future cooperation among groups with similar areas of interest.

In addition to seminars, there was a PA EXPO where each group was able to present their accomplishments and materials. The competition for “Best Stand” was won by the “Nihal” PA group from Bakhchisaray with

Second Place going to the “Happy Hammers” from Ternopil and Third Place going to “To Be or Not to Be” from Zaporozhe. First Place for the best “PA and Us” poster was awarded to “Happy Babies” PA Group from Kharkov. Second Place in this competition was given to “Our Future” from Ternopil and Third Place went to “New Generation” PA Group from Kharkov. First place winners received digital cameras and all winners received paintings from an American sponsor. All PA Groups received certificates of participation.

The FAIR involved a group of volunteers from Budy High School (Kharkov Region) as well as a Theatre Group from the Kharkov Volunteer Center who provided evening entertainment and facilitated one of the seminars.

The organizers had the opportunity to interact with the many participants throughout the three days. Comments were overwhelmingly positive. The results of the evaluation showed that participants were extremely satisfied and rated all areas as 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 being the best). The opportunity for future contacts and the seminars were considered most positively.

The FAIR was sponsored in its entirety by NED. It was the culmination of a two-year program sponsored by NED and the East-East Programs of Soros Foun-dation in Ukraine and Poland. We were especially pleased that Rodger Potocki was able to attend. He made a long, complicated trip to be present. We hope that his visit gave NED a firsthand opportunity to see the concrete results of their investment

We would like to thank NED once again for the generous support that has made this program possible! We intend to continue our PA work in Ukraine. We are also grateful to the East-East programs of Batory Foundation and Renaissance Foundation for their support of this project which we believe has significantly contributed to the development of civil society in Ukraine.

Unite website: www.paunite.org.

Unite website: www.paunite.org.

Page 12: December 2007 · 2018. 2. 16. · In 2006 in the project “Public Achievement” in Ukra-ine, we invited three groups of 24 teachers each from Crimea, Kharkov, Ternopil and Uzhgorod

“Academy for Young Social Entrepreneurs in BiH”

Established in 2004 by MTO to introduce young people from Moldova to the profession of social entrepreneur and to support those, who already have a vision of how to creatively solve their local communities’ problems. It was expanded in 2005 to Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 2006 to Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro and in 2007, 22 young Bosnians participated in a program of workshops in Nowy Sacz, internships with ASHOKA Fellows throughout Poland and “homework” back in their home towns.

Our Bosnian partner in the project was the Human Rights Office (HRO) in Tuzla. We were especially pleased that as many as eight participants from Repu-blika Srbska (RS) in BiH were able to come. This is a very neglected region which desperately needs new initiatives and citizen movements.

Workshops:

Workshops took place from December 1-7 according to the agenda. The following ASHOKA Fellows pre-sented their organizations and ideas:

• Ela Pomaska (Warsaw): Coalition to Fight Cancer; Help for families with terminal disease and importance of early screening.

• Jacek Alaba (Rzedkowice near Zawiercie): DOMIN Foundation; Various ways to help drug addicts.

• Grzegorz Tabasz (Nowy Sacz): Greenworks; Environmental protection and ecological education;

• Adrian Kowalski (Katowice): Guardian Angel House; Street children.

OTHER MTO ACTIVITIES

• Piotr Topinski (Zywiec): Zywiec Development Foundation, The ideal county;

• Maria Schejbal (Bielsko Biala): Grodzki Theatre, Bielsko Artist’s Association; Theater as a way to mainstream the handicapped.

• Ala Derkowska (Nowy Sacz): MTO, Civic educa-tion in school and beyond;

In addition to the presentations and discussions with ASHOKA Fellows, there were integration activities to practice effective group work (PA), group decision-making, discussions about the role of the Third Sec-tor, project writing and evaluation, budget writing and fundraising as well as Public Relations. The group spent time practicing skills, planning to create their own NGOs and work independently and creatively to solve local problems.

Before departing for their chosen internships, each student prepared a draft of their first project – one they would like to implement upon their return home. MTO trainers met with each student to discuss their projects and give feedback.

Internships:

It turned out that all of the participants were intere-sted, to one degree or another, in education. There-fore one day was spent at MTO in Nowy Sacz. For the remaining 5-day internship students could choose from the ASHOKA presenters as well as from the following places (who had not made presentations in Nowy Sacz):

• Help for Women and Children Foundation (Warsaw) – Krystyna Zytecka;

• Kid Protect Foundation (Warsaw) – Jakub Spiewak;

• Nobody’s Children Foundation (Warsaw) – Katrzyna Fenik;

• NIDA Local Foundation (Nidzica near Olsztyn) – Krzysztof Margol.

The offer was rich and the choice difficult. Intern-ships took place at the following organizations:

Guardian Angel House – 5 participants, 4 days;

DOMIN Foundation– 5 participants, 5 days;

Zywiec Development Foundation– 5 participants, 5 days;

Coalition to Fight Cancer – 3 participants, 5 days;

Kid Protect, Nobody’s Children, Help for Women and Children– 4 participants, 5 days;

Educational Society for Malopolska – 19 participants x 1 day + 3 participants x 2 days.

During the internships, participants had the opportunity not only to see and be involved in various activities, but also often talked with their hosts about their projects, ideas and local issues until late in the evenings. In several instances, thanks to the advice they received, they changed their original projects completely. Many have plans to continue cooperation with their hosts in the future.

Summary of Internships and workshops in Po-land:

Upon their return to Nowy Sacz, each group presented their internships and shared their experiences with the whole group. Together we created a list of the key characteristics of social entrepreneurs as well as best practices. We discussed SWOT analysis and used it to give feedback to one another about individual projects. Once again, projects were submitted (2nd drafts) to MTO trainers and written feedback was provided to each before departure.

Anonymous evaluations were filled out about the entire project (all phases) and materials were distributed for use in future cooperation. Each participant received a small token (colorful calendar) from Charles Merrill.

Evaluation:

In our opinion the project went extremely well, in spite of initial difficulties from signing the contract later than expected and the last minute resignation of two participants. (The latter was more than made up for by the enthusiasm of the remaining 22! For many of them this was the first plane ride and the first trip abroad.)

The group listened with great interest to the ASHOKA presentations as well as to the DVD’s of Bill Drayton (ASHOKA Founder) and Muhammad Yunus (ASHOKA Fellow from Bangladesh and

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 2006) discussing the role and significance of social entrepreneurs. The students were amazed by the range and variety of problems tackled by ASHOKA Fellows, their innovative approaches and passionate engagement and dedication to solving the problems. The Fellows’ enthusiasm and involvement were contagious, and we firmly believe that the commitment of the participants will not end with the knowledge and contacts made in Poland but will be effectively applied to improving the lives of those in their local communities.

Individually or in pairs, the participants designed 18 projects that they would like to implement upon their return home:

1. “Mama Knows, Mama is not Afraid”: After giving birth, young mothers suffer from post-birth depression and are faced with problems that they have no idea how to handle. In the entire Sarajevo region there is not a single center that can help. The project includes the organization of a cycle of meetings between young mothers and doctors (gynecologists and pediatricians), midwives (care of newborns), psychologists, etc. In the next phase a Center will be created where young mothers can meet one another and form a support group. Sanida Hasanovic-Car, Sarajevo.

2. “Better to Be Safe, than Cured”: This project will raise awareness among high school and university students about the dangers of having sex without using protection (1000 abortions in Sarajevo in 2006!). There will be efforts to break taboos and spread information about family planning through publications (pamphlets, brochures, posters) as well as meetings with experts and finally a rock concert. Zorana Savic and Azalea Vilic, Sarajevo.

3. “Employment for Minority Returnees”: People (mostly belonging to ethnic minorities) returning to their farms and homes in Lukavac region after the war

Projects submitted – time to relax.Sanida Hasanovic-Car and her colleagues in Warsaw.

are totally lacking a livelihood, insurance, contacts and information about available work. The project will gather these people and organize workshops to provide information on how to create one’s own small business and sell a particular product. It will also encourage contact with local business leaders to ensure a market for the products. Amra Mujkic, Tuzla.

4. “Help Others, Help Yourself!”: The goal of this project is to integrate new settlers (who have moved to Bijeljina from other places where their farms have been destroyed as a result of war) with “old” residents of the community. Often the newcomers are educated and skilled, but due to personal barriers and difficulties, are unable to find their place. As a result their children lack basic needs (clothes, food, and school materials) and are more likely to become involved in anti-social behaviors (drug-trafficking). The project will include a wide information campaign, not just to collect materials for the newcomers, but more importantly to raise awareness of their plight and encourage integration. Dragana Nikolic and Slobodan Brkljac, Bijeljina.

5. “Let’s Go to School Together”: Studies show that in 2006-7 in the 3 largest cities in BiH, only 8% of handicapped children attend regular schools or even go to school at all. The situation is even worse outside of these cities. The goal of the project is to raise awareness in the community about this problem and organize workshops for teachers, parents and social workers in order to remedy this situation. Rade Tijanic, Zvornik and Bojana Ivandic, Banja Luka.

6. “Importance of the Third Sector”: There is a great need to change young people’s perception of NGO’s. (Up until now they have been the target of attacks!) Information will be collected and published about goals and activities of local organizations (brochures, media) and the First NGO Festival will be held by

Panonia Lake in Tuzla on August 12 (World Youth Day). Jasmin Alic, Tuzla.

7. “PC Girls”: The goal of this project is to reveal to a group of 15-20 young women the secrets of the computer world (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.). Although such basics are taught at school, limited access to Internet and computers, means that young people, especially girls, are not able to fully take advantage of these possibilities. Computer literacy will facilitate access to jobs in the future. Lana Pasic, Sarajevo.

8. “Blog-to-Blog Incubator”: The idea of this project is to create computer literate society able to navigate the new technologies that are available. 10 high school and 10 university students will attend workshops about blogging. Blogs are a tool which enables the free exchange of ideas and opinions and a study shows that only 25% of youth in Banja Luka are able to take part in this Internet trend. Milos Blagojevic, Banja Luka.

9. “Let’s Become Literate”: Thanks to this project, for the first time in history, students will be able to contribute to the study of their own language, BOSNIAN, in Bosnian. A scientific journal, “Bosnistika”, will enable students of philology to contribute articles on history and development of Bosnian as well as comparative grammar and linguistics. This journal would be the key source of information about Bosnian language for elementary and secondary school students. Fatima Mehmedovic, Tuzla.

10. “Peer Education of Young Journalists”: Studies show that here are few school newspapers in BiH. The project would prepare 8 young people, who would then run workshops in 38 high schools throughout the country. As a result about 30 school newspapers would be created and the newly trained journalists would cooperate with the mass media in their communities. Jelena Jurosevic, Zvornik.

11. “Let’s Learn Together”: The goal is to break the stereotypes and prejudices against Roma. Student volunteers will work with 20 Roma pupils in one school in Tuzla (assistance with their studies), with their parents (encouraging them to continue their education and showing what benefits education provide) as well as with teachers working in mixed classes. A “round-table” discussion at the end will present results and prepare recommendations for similar activities in other schools with Roma pupils. Lejla Mazlic, Tuzla.

12. “Open Your Heart”: English textbooks will be bought for pupils in an elementary school in Gracanica

Lana Pasic from Sarajevo and Lejla Mazlic from Tuzla.

who are unable to afford them on their own. Having the books will enable them to actively participate rather than passively listen and will integrate them in the school community rather than have them remain as outsiders because of financial barriers. Safeta Avdic, Gracanica.

13. “You Need to Know!”: The level of knowledge about the Third Sector in Republika Srbska is very low and youth have no idea of its role nor the possibilities it can provide. This project will run an information campaign followed by the opening of an information Center in Banja Luka. Tijana Bjeljac, Banja Luka.

14. “Youth House Campaign”: Youth constitute 30% of the population of Zenica (180,000 inhabitants). High unemployment means that youth eager to make money take advantage of any opportunity, including illegal ones. A social campaign to renovate and open a Youth Center will engage youth in something use-ful to them and give them a place to pursue positive activities. Alen Jusufovic, Zenica and Ines Stimjanin, Sarajevo.

15. “Let’s Play”: The college in Bijeljina does not have a sport’s field. School sports grounds are occupied from morning till evening. Next to the dormitories there is an empty piece of land overrun with grass and unused for 15 years. This project will enclose the area, surface it and provide sports equipment for various games. Student volunteers will do all the work. Professional coaches will work with about 250 students once the area is ready. Instead of roaming the streets, they will be involved in healthy and fun activities. Dragana Srdic, Bijeljina.

16. “Climb for Your Dreams”: Building a climbing wall in Tuzla (nothing like that exists in the entire region) will provide a positive way of spending free time as well as a real adrenaline rush. This is an excellent means of reducing aggression (often directed at NGOs) amongst gangs of youth. Elmir Seleskovic, Tuzla.

17. “Some Call it Europe, We Call it Home”: Information about the EU and the opportunities that it provides for young people will be given during a one-day visit to the Committee for European Integration in Sarajevo. The goal of this initiative is to promote a favorable, stable political situation in BiH that will enable the country to gain EU membership. Predrag Savic, Milici.

18. “Save the Christmas Tree”: The goal of this project is to make people aware of the fact that the thoughtless and uncontrolled cutting of evergreens for Christmas trees is destroying the forests that are one of Bosnia’s greatest natural resources. The multi-media campaign to encourage the purchase of potted or artificial trees will be run by volunteers in the period before Christmas. A positive side-effect may be the creation of more jobs in businesses that sell potted plants. Natasa Gavric, Banja Luka/ Travnik.

In addition to the daily informal feedback used to honor their various requests, we also conducted 3 written evaluations. The first focused on Phase 1 – the workshops and activities in Nowy Sacz; the second focused on Phase 2 – the internships and the third was the final overall evaluation.

Generally the group was extremely pleased with the program. Content, contacts, consultations and assistance got the highest marks throughout. The feedback regarding the internships was mostly positive. The highest rated internship was in Zawiercie with Jacek Alaba. He has much experience with hosting various groups and a very interactive program. He also maintains contact with the participants and even cooperates with many of them on the future. Although this is now our 6th AYSE group, this is a learning process for us as well as we try to improve the program with each subsequent group.

Most importantly, however, all of the participants have committed to continuing with the AYSE program back home. They seem to have left inspired and motivated. In addition to the usual problems of unemployment, AIDS, environmental protection, there were many problems directly related to the war (situation of refugees, displaced persons, as well desperation, isolation, lack of contact with the larger world and the hopeless case youth feel they face). We hope that the students will even to a small degree make a dent in these problems and change something for the positive in these areas. Now it is our job, along with the local coordinators, to remain in touch with the group and keep up this level of enthusiasm. Already in February 2008 we will make a short monitoring visit to BiH and will see most of the participants. A final seminar will take place in Tuzla in September 2008.“Climb for Your Dreams” – climbing wall in Rzędkowice.

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to Batory Foundation for their financial support of this project as well as their genuine interest in its success as demonstrated by Justyna Blinowska’s daylong visit during the workshops in Nowy Sacz. Both the Bosnian participants and MTO appreciate and value the direct contact with our sponsor. We also acknowledge the generous support of the East-East Program in Sarajevo for making it possible for participants to come to Poland and to the RITA Program for enabling us to continue our work in 2008.

“Solidarity – Passport to Democracy”

The main goal of this project was to promote Poland in Serbia, Moldova and Ukraine and to support democratic changes in these three countries. To accomplish this, participants explored the history and experiences of the Polish civic movement called Solidarity and learned about the events that occurred between 1980 and 1991. This project provided the opportunity for participants not only to learn how to build civil society without using violence but also to taught them that average people have great potential

which can change even hopeless situations. They also were able to share best practices and experiences from their countries.

From July 7-13, 2007, twenty four participants, including twelve people from Ukraine, six from Serbia and six from Moldova, took part in special workshops held in Nowy Sacz which provided them with the skills needed to establish and run Solidarity Clubs in their regions. The workshops were intended to provide information about the Polish Solidarity movement and to offer some practical training to these future leaders.

After returning home, the participants established 12 regional Solidarity Clubs. In addition to overseeing these clubs, project participants organised an awareness day on August 31 to promote what they learned through the project “Solidarity – Passport to Democracy”. In the autumn, the most active participants returned to Nowy Sacz in order to sum up the work of their clubs. They also visited the Polish capital city, Warsaw, and met with representatives of the Polish government.

Elmir full of energy – as always.

Thank you. It was good to be in Poland together.

25

As we are still in contact with these groups, we know that their work did not end with this project. Many are still active and are using the skills and spirit of Solidarity to improve their local communities. For example, the Solidarity Club in Subotica, Serbia has registered itself as “Protega” and is determined to preserve the historic district of the town from being overrun by commercial developers.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their support and trust.

Jewish Programs:

“I Bet I Can Show You”For many centuries the Roman Catholic Church has treated Jews as their number one enemy. Based on religious beliefs, Jews were excluded from social life, persecuted and even murdered. This was done as punishment for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. After Vatican II, mainly thanks to the firm convictions of Pope John Paul II, this line of thinking was radically altered. Consider, for example, his symbolic homily before the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.

The Project “I Bet I Can Show You” is the next step along this road. 75 teenagers from Krakow, Oswiecim and Nowy Sacz have been meeting since January 2007 in order to find traces of Jewish culture and traditions in their home towns. These youth then shared these discoveries with their peers.

A publication was designed and created in its entirety by these young people. We hope that by showing how the participants (authors) were affected by this undertaking and how their thinking changed during its course, others will be encouraged to become involved in similar initiatives. Replication is a desirable outcome and it is very likely given the results of the questionnaire which showed that 60% of the participants would like to continue this project in their schools. More than 80% declared that their stereotypes of and approach to Jews changed for the better!

A detailed report of our activities can be found at www.jawampokaze.net.pl. In addition to daily agen-das, instructions for scavenger hunts, city maps and multi-media p resen ta t ions , you can also find many pictures, useful addresses, links and the na-mes of all par-ticipants in the project.

We would like to thank all of the individuals, organi-zations and institutions that contributed to the suc-cess of “I Bet I Can Show You”. We would like to especially acknowledge those at Joods Humanitair Fonds for their support in words and actions during difficult moments of the project.

Study Tours:

“Study Tours to Poland”

10 students from Ukraine, Belarus and Kaliningrad spent 12 days in Nowy Sacz and Krakow visiting educational institutions and learning about various educational initiatives. In October 2007, these students participated in the workshops of the “Solidarity-Passport to Democracy program” as well as a condensed version of the “Academy for Young Social Entrepreneurs”. They visited the Business College of Nowy Sacz as well as the local Community College and surprised that there is a department of Russian language and literature and that Polish students were choosing to study there. This gave them a common language that helped build friendship. There were evening activities at the bowling alley, disco and jazz club.

In Krakow they visited the Christian Culture Foundation “Znak” as well as the “Znak” publishing house and its director, Henryk Wozniakowski. They took part in activites about Jewish culture run by the Krakow group of the project “I Bet I Can Show You” and attended a lecture at the Tischner European University about international cooperation.

The last days in Nowy Sacz were spent with the independent media of Nowy Sacz. They were guests on a live show of Radio Galicja and broadcasted the next day’s weather in Russian. They also visited the popular newspaper Dziennik Polski where they learned about free press.

Thank you Anna, Anastazja, Anastazja, Oksana, Oksana, Natalia, Natalia, Svetlana, Yury, Raman, for coming! Thank you RITA Program of the Polish American Freedom Foundation for making it possible. Do zobaczenia !

“INTERAULA Study Visit”

MTO has worked with schools in Bulgaria since 1999. During a summer workshop of the VILLAGE program in Vidin, our partner organization and member of the School Plus network, introduced us to a representative

of INTERAULA. INTERAULA is a consortium of five of Bulgaria’s most important universities and focuses on improvement of curriculum and school management. The Southwestern University in Blagoevgrad was particularly interested in cooperating with MTO and sent 24 of its professors and INTERAULA representatives to visit colleges, universities and education and tourist sites in Nowy Sacz, Krakow and Warsaw in addition to workshops about MTO’s innovative programs.

The group visited a wide range of educational institutions including: the Community College in Nowy Sacz, the National Louis University - Business College to have a closer look at the management of the independent, non-state education as well as the Independent Middle and High School „SPLOT” where they observed lessons.

In Krakow they were welcomed at the Tischner European University to learn more about cooperation between universities from various countries and student initiatives in implementing projects abroad. They were impressed by the Children’s University of Jagiellonian University and private Montessori Preschool. In Warsaw they had study visits at the Education for Democracy Foundation, the Center of

Civic Education and Collegium CIVITAS – a private university.

There were several workshops to discuss the problems of the education system in Poland and Bulgaria, experience interactive methods of teaching and extra-curriculum programs engaging students in work for the community such as Public Achievement. Civic education workshops introduced VILLAGE, Street Law programs and the School Plus network. We also addressed how NGOs and universities can help in building an open, democratic, participatory society and the importance of cooperation between teachers, parents and students.

The touristic program included a Nowy Sacz sightseeing tour, a visit at the Old Salt Mine in Wieliczka, a bus tour around the old city and a visit to the Royal Castle Wawel in Kraków, the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising, the Royal Castle and Palace on the Water, the Old City Square in Warsaw and a guided tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.

We look forward to expanding our cooperation with INTERAULA to include the other institutions in the consortium.

Let’s talk about innovative teaching methods.

All elementary schools of Malopolska district were invited to participate in the project. Teachers that are interested in using the materials can receive a free copy from MTO. By the end of 2007 the website www.szkolnesafari.pl had been visited 1236 times.

We appreciate the assistance of the RITA Program and Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and thank for their support of global education in the region.

“Tractor for Kenya”

This project is a continuation of last year’s initiative to encourage inhabitants of Nowy Sacz to contribute in a small way to improving life in a small village in Kenya. There were four phases in the project:

1. Interactive workshops in district schools. Volunteers from our partner organization, “Simba Friends” from Warsaw, presented everyday life in Kenya. For many students this was a first exposure to anything African.

2. A mobile exhibition of Photos from Simba Friends’ activities in Kenya was open to the public in the main square on Nowy Sacz.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Southwestern University in Blagoevgrad for sponsoring this study visit.

Development Education:

“School Safari”

This global education program for elementary school students in Malopolska region focused on Kenya and resulted in didactic materials for teachers and an inte-ractive website.

In September and October 2007, a group of elementa-ry school teachers created didactic materials for their students who were then invited to participate in a vir-tual safari in Kenya. During these activities students visited a small village in Kenya where they were able to see how the everyday life of their peers looks like. The initial version of the didactic materials was tested in three elementary schools in October and involved 300 students. Taking into consideration feedback from student s and teachers, a final version was com-pleted and made available on the internet where it is freely accessible until the end of 2008.

“Learning and fun in spite of dyslexia”

The goal of this program was to broaden the educational offer for disadvantaged children in the Nowy Sacz region. Special attention was given to low-income, rural children as well as those with dyslexia. 171 children benefitted from this project. The project consisted of four parallel tracks:

1. Innovative methods and techniques of speed learning and memorization to enable each student to create an individual method of learning based on one’s own brain structure. After these lessons, students have greater self-confidence which helps them to continue their education.

2. Specific therapy used to assist those with dyslexia, disgraphia and dyscalculia. Special computer programs were used to assist students with these problems.

3. Based on the American Street Law program these activities were designed to encourage youth, parents and teachers to independently seek answers to the question “How does law function in my neighborhood, city, country?”. By looking for answers to this personal question, fundamental skills are developed by the students themselves. In this way, they create their own innovative methods of education, which will make learning more attractive. The aim of this project was to strengthen democratization, good governance and respect for the rule of law. Students created their own projects according to their area of interest which introduced interactive methods of teaching to rural classrooms.

4. Workshops for parents to help them understand the changes that adolescents go through and better enable them to deal with the problems arising from these period of development.

We would like to thank the Education Superintendent of Nowy Sacz for the financial support of this project.

3. An open panel discussion was held at Splot High School to discuss Poland’s role in Africa and what kind of help Poland can provide. As a result students came up with various ideas such as creating their own English books and collecting other books and toys for children in Sega village.

4. Kenya Dinner and Tractor event were organized for the public. A typical Kenya dish was prepared and served by volunteers. It was available for the cost of a regular Polish lunch at a restaurant with all the funds going towards the purchase of a tractor for Sega. A musical evening with a Kenyan band and a tractor parade around the main square brought Kenya to Nowy Sacz.

We are grateful for the support of the RITA Program and Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for our efforts to raise awareness in Nowy Sacz district of the needs of developing countries and Poland’s commitment to the Millennium Development Goals.

ImpactThe creation of new NGOs and the successful implementation of projects of their own creation impact the local communities. They will result in better schools, more involved youth and local community members. Moreover, joyful cooperation within the network should result in more joint projects, visits in participating countries and the building of friendships to replace existing stereotypes and prejudices. That, in turn, creates hope for democracy and future reconciliation. This is no small achievement. It is a long-term goal whose importance makes it well worth the time and effort. The young and dynamic social entrepreneurs of our current programs will have an equally important impact in areas crucial to their communities. Their innovative ideas and dedication are strong examples of grassroots democracy.
