PSSA Cricket - Report from the PitchThursday 8th March, 2018 is a day to be remembered by all at Canowindra Public School. It is the day that a nervous team came together, worked together and won together. Canowindra’s Cricket captain, Bailey Kennedy, won the toss and elected to bat. Grenfell went out to bat and started out strong, 5 overs in and they had already scored 19 runs. That was until Beau Bollinger bowled a terrific ball taking out middle stump. Like the phoenix, this was the start of Canowindra’s rise from the ashes. Grenfell’s opening batter Hayden Reid was hitting hard and hitting true, striking the ball with such confidence. He was certainly cementing his place out in the middle. Riley Bollinger was bowling well, great line and great length. He was determined to get the wicket. He bowled the perfect ball. This ball led to an unbelievable screaming catch by Hayden Whatman. The Canowindra team was relentless. Ball after ball, catch after catch slowly chipping away at the Grenfell batting attack. That was until a historical moment in Canowindra Public School history. Colby Burling in his final over came in to bowl. His first ball was hit for a single. Second ball too quick for the batter and no run was scored. His third ball was lightning fast cutting off the pitch and straight through the stumps for a wicket. Fourth ball another screamer straight through the stumps. His fifth ball, the tension was building on and off the field. The crowd was on the edge of their seats with anticipation. He bowled his fifth ball land straight through middle stumps for a hat-trick. Grenfell ended their 25 overs with a solid 8 out for 71 runs. Canowindra’s bowling figures, Bailey Kennedy 1/9, Beau Bollinger 2/16, R. Bollinger 1/19, Hayden Whatman 0/10 and Colby Burling 4/7. There were three catches during the game, Finn Hamer, Mitchell Cartwright and Hayden Whatman. Great fielding all round by all and awesome wicket keeping by Kynan Fliedner. The target was set and it was now Canowindra’s turn to light up the pitch with their confident shots and quick singles. They had to chase down 71 runs in 25 overs, a tough target on a slow outfield. Bailey Kennedy and Hayden Whatman took to the field eager and ready for the challenge. They knew that they had to keep their heads down, work quick singles and pick their shots. Five overs in and Canowindra were on 14 runs, trailing Grenfell by 5 runs at this point. The boys dug deep and kept pushing quick singles. In the sixth over there was confusion on the pitch and this led to a run out. A gallant effort by Hayden Whatman, his innings had come to an end. Beau Bollinger walked out to the pitch with confidence. At this point Bailey Kennedy was striking the ball with great timing hitting two 4’s in a row. With the team cheering on every run from the sidelines. The boys knuckled down and began to play very smart cricket. Playing their shots and hitting the ball hard through the thick out field. Mid way though the fourteenth over Beau Bollinger hit the winning shot, a pull shot for four. Canowindra won with 1 out for 74 runs off 14 overs. Captain and opener Bailey Kennedy finished on 29, Hayden Whatman smashed 7 runs and Beau Bollinger cracked out a quick 24 runs. I have recently been told that this is a historic day. That this is the first win for Canowindra Public School for a good 10 years. And the first hat trick. All players from both Canowindra and Grenfell played well and displayed great sportsmanship on and off the field. The boys and girls of Canowindra Public School Cricket team are now awaiting the result of the Cowra and Mulyan game and Canowindra will play the winner.

Great game by all and thank you to the parents who came to support. A special thank you to Mr Traves and Mr Toole for umpiring on the day.

Head LiceThere have been a few cases of head lice in our school. The only way to stop the spread throughout the school is if all parents continue to keep a watchful eye on their childrens hair and if any trace of head lice is found, appropriate treatment is administered.

Coles Sports for SchoolsOur school has registered and Coles will reward you with a voucher for each $10 spent. Schools can then redeem the vouchers for Sporting equipment. We are accepting vouchers at school and at Coles in Cowra. Your support would be very much appreciated. Look for the Coles cardboard box at our office.
