Standard Specification forSeamless Cold-Drawn Intermediate Alloy-Steel Heat-Exchanger and Condenser TubesThis standard is issued under the fixed designation A 199/A 199M; the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision, A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval. A superscript epsilon (c) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.

    1. Scope1.1 This specification* covers several grades of minimum-wall-thickness, chromium-molybdenum and chromium-mo-lybdenum -silicon, seamless, cold-drawn, intermediate alloysteel tubes for heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heattransfer apparatus.1.2 The tubing sizes usually furnished to this specificationare l/s to 3 in. [3.2 to 76.2 mm ] in outside diameter. Tubinghaving other dimensions may be furnished prov ided suchtubes comply w ith all other requirem ents of this specification.1.3 Mecha nical p roperty requirements do not apply totubing smaller than l/s in. [3.2 mm ] in inside diameter or0.015 in. [0.4 mm] in thickness.1.4 The values stated in either inch-poun d units or SIunits are to be regarded separately a s standard. Within thetext, the SI units are show n in brackets. The values stated ineach system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each systemmust be used independently of the other. Comb ining valuesfrom the two systems may result in nonconformance withthe specification. The inch-pound units shall apply unless theM designation of this specification is specified in the order.

    3. General Requirements3.1 Material furn ished under this specification shall con-form to the applicable requirements of the current edition ofSpecification A 450/A 450M , unless otherwise providedherein.

    4. Ordering Information4.1 Orders for material under this specification shouldinclude the following, as required, to describe the desiredmaterial adequately:4.1.1 Quantity (feet, metres, or num ber of lengths),4.1.2 Name of material (seamless tubes),4.1.3 Grade (Table 1 ,

4.1.4 M anufacture (cold drawn),4.1.5 Size (outside diameter and minim um wall thick-ness),4.1.6 Length (specific or random ),4.1.7 C hemical comp osition (heat or product),4.1.8 Test report required (see Certification Section ofSpecification A 450/A 450M),4.1.9 Optional requirements (of 12.5),4.1.10 Specification designation, and4.1.11 Special requirements.5. Manufacture

5.1 Tubes shall be made by the seamless process and shallbe cold drawn.6. Heat Treatment

6.1 After the final cold-draw pass, Grade T-l 1 tubes shallbe heat treated at 1200F [65oC] or higher and all othergrades except T91 shall be heat treated at 1250F [675C] orhigher. For Grade T 91, the tubes shall be normalized fromthe temperature range of 1900-2000F [ 1040-1095C] andtempered at 1350F (73oC) minimum.7. Surface Condition

7.1 The tub es shall be free of scale. A slight amount ofoxidation will not be considered as scale.8. Chemical Composition

8.1 The steel shall conform to the requirements as tochemical composition prescribed in Table 1.9. Product Analysis

9.1 An analysis shall be made of one billet or tube fromeach heat. The chemical comp osition thus determined shallconform to the requirements specified.9.2 If the original test for product analysis fails, retests oftwo additional billets or tubes shall be made. Both retests, forthe elements in question shall meet the requirements of thespecification; otherwise all remaining material in the heat orlot (Note 1) shall be rejected or, at the option of theproducer, each billet or tube may be individually tested foracceptance. Billets or tubes that do not meet the require-ments of the specification shall be rejected.

NOTE I-For flattening and flaring requirements, the term lotapplies o a ll tubes prior to cutting, of the same nom inal size and wallthickness hat are produced from the sam e heat of steel. When tinal heattreatment is in a batch-type urnace,a lot sh all nclude only those tubesof the same size and from the same heat which are heat treated in thesame furnace charge.Wh en the final heat treatment is in a con tinuousI
