What is AB Tutor Control?
AB "utor Control is a utility that ena!les a tutor to control a num!er of remote student orkstations in a computer training room from one tutor orkstation.

AB "utor Control consists of to separate programs
The Tutor or Control program "his component should !e installed on orkstations hich ill !e used to connect to and control other orkstations.
The 'tu"ent or Client program. 7nstall this component on orkstations that ill !e remotely controlled. By installing this component( you are alloing a "utor machine to connect ith the &tudent orkstation.
7f the Control program is installed( then a program group called AB Tutor Control ill !e created containing an AB Tutor Control icon and a De- install ABControl icon.

'ilent Client (nstall
7t is possi!le to run a remote silent installation of the client softare.
A silent installation is one that re5uires no interaction from the user( providing a convenient method for performing a set of automated installations.

#se the Add!emo"e Programs function in the 'indos Control /anel to un-install !oth the tutor softare and the client installations.

ABControl Configuration
eneral
'&an for Clients at 'tartup 7f this option is set( the "utor Control program ill automatically scan your netork for running Client programs hen its launched.
Automati&ally &onne&t to foun" &lients By default( hen the system scans the netork and finds client orkstations( these are simply listed in the program as G1oun"2 but not yet &onne&te". "his makes the program more efficient since it does not connect to machines hich ill not !e used. Any command sent to a selected computer in this state ill first connect !efore sending the command. By ena!ling this option( the system automatically connects to all found clients.
Allo# /upli&ate Computer $ames By default( the system ill not allo you to connect to computers ith duplicate computer names D1nly one ill !e shon in the listE. 7f you ish to override this restriction( then check this option.

7ts not good practice to use the same computer name for different computers as this can cause identification pro!lems for users and netork administrators.
Che&% for up"ates eery Hou can get the softare to automatically check for any updates !y ena!ling this option and setting the checking period. 'hen the system detects that it is time to check for updates( it ill connect to the .a!consulting.com e!-site and check for a neer version of the softare. 7f a ne version is found( a message !o% is displayed shoing you your current version the neer version and asking if you ish to donload it and start the update process.
+se &ompression "uring file transfers 7f this option is selected( then any files transferred to or from a remote orkstation ill !e compressed. "his greatly increases the file transfer speeds.
$ote "ransferring files that are already compress ill have little or not speed increase.
Vie#*'ho#
Colour o"e "his is the num!er of colours used to display the students orkstation screen on the tutor machine. "he default is set to ?igh Colour( hich( in most cases( is ade5uate. Hou can try G"rue Colour and see ho the screen refreshes perform.

Compression "his is the type of compression used to transmit data to and from the students orkstation. "he optimum compression type again depends on your netork and computers.
Automatic "he compression level is calculated !ased on the line speed tests performed at the start-up. D9efaultE
=o >aster compression time !ut larger transmission si@e. ;ood for slo machines !ut fast netorks. ot good if you are vieing a remote client over a slo dial-up connection.
Medium Medium compression time and transmission si@e. ?igh &loer compression time !ut smaller transmission si@e.

Optimi5e -o&al Win"o#s /es%top for best performan&e 7f you ena!le this option then the desktop of your on computer ill !e modified for optimum screen transfer performance during a 'ho# command.
9esktop optimi@ation means that
• All menu display effects are removed Dscrolling or fades etc.E
• All menu drop shados are removed
• All indo title !ar gradient fills are removed
• >ont smoothing is turned off.
• "ool tip animations are removed
• &mooth scrolling of list !o%es is turned off

Optimi5e Remote Client /es%top for best performan&e 7f you ena!le this option then the desktop of the remote client ill !e modified for optimum screen transfer performance during Wat&h command.
$ote 'hen this option is applied( the screen ill flicker a fe times as the changes are made. 7f you do not ant the remote student to kno they are !eing atched( then turn this option off.
/isable Remote s&reen saer an" po#er management 7f you ena!le this option then the remote client computers screen saver and poer management feature ill !e disa!le during a Wat&h command.

'hen you finish the 'atch command then the remote orkstations setting are restored.
Time bet#een s&reen &y&les 7f you are vieing multiple orkstations and you have selected the C'cle mode( then this is the time in seconds spent vieing one remote orkstation screen !efore moving on to the ne%t orkstation.

'hen you -o&% the remote orkstation you can display a message and+or a picture on the screen indicating that the key!oard and mouse is locked.

Ba&%groun" Colour &elect the colour to !e used as the !ackground hen the remote orkstation is locked.
'ho# (mage &elect the option to display a picture as the !ackground to a locked
screen. /ress the !utton to !rose your local hard drive for an image.
'e provide a num!er of sample lock screen images for you to use( !ut you can create your on using a normal 'indos /aint package.
$ote 'hen you lock a remote orkstation for the first time and the !ackground image is not found !y that machine( then it ill !e transferred and store on the remote machine automatically.
&elect the 'tret&h to fit option to resi@e the image to fill the remote orkstations screen no matter hat screen resolution is used.

'ubnets to '&an "he control program ill automatically scan the current netork for computers ith the client program installed and running. Hou can set the program to search deeper into the netorks !y increasing the num!er of su!nets to scan. De.g. 7f you have many small su!-netorks controlled !y individual netork routers( then increase the &u!nets to scan to !ridge the routers.E
'&an time "his is the time in seconds the program ill ait for replies from clients. D2 seconds is normally enough time( !ut the default is 4 to !e safeE.
/ire&t (7 A""ress 7f you kno the e%act 7/ address of a remote computer( this can !e entered directly. "his is normally used to connect to a computer in a remote location ithout the need to e%tend the su!net scan. Hou can enter the 7/ address of a machine running the Client softare anyhere in the orld
Hou must either enter a valid 7/ address of the client orkstations to hich you ish to connect. nter each orkstation 7/ address and press the Add !utton.
An 7/ Addresses can !e removed from the list !y first selecting it and then pressing the Gemove !utton.
'e&urity
"here are to levels of access to the "utor Control program A"ministrator and Tutor . "he Administrator access level allos a netork manager to control the connection of the "utor program to other orkstations. "he "utor access level is simply a security measure to stop un-authorised use of the "utor program.
'hen the "utor Control program is launched( the folloing dialog is displayed.

7f no passords have !een set( then you can simply press O( to enter the system in the normal ay ith full Administrator access rights.
$ote 'e strongly recommend setting passords to prevent unauthorised users from inappropriate or miss-use of the system.
7f you have set an Administrator passord( then this must !e entered to gain access to the administrative features.
7f you have specified an administrator passord( !ut no tutor passord( then if the user simply presses the 1$ !utton( they ill gain access as a normal tutor. 7f a tutor passord has also !een set( then the passord field cannot !e left !lank and a valid passord must !e entered to gain access to the program.

7n order to set passords( you must have administrator access rights. &elect the Tool s menu folloed !y Passwords)

"o ena!le the administrator passord( enter your passord and confirm it in the second edit !o%. "he passords must match( if they dont( you ill !e asked to re-enter the passords.
"o ena!le a "utor passord( again enter the re5uired passords.
Both passords can !e left GBlank in hich case no passord validation ill take place on start-up and full administrator access ill !e granted.
"o ena!le the client connection security( enter your passord and confirm it in the second edit !o%. "he passords must match( if they dont( you ill !e asked to re-enter the passords.

"his level of access allos a netork manager to configure the "utor program for connections to specific classrooms.
"he roups and Tools menus are only accessi!le ith administrator access rights
"he administrator can also connect to All orkstations on the netork hereas the tutor can only connect to groups set-up !y the administrator.
Tutor A&&ess
"utor access rights are simply to prevent unauthorised users from using the program. "he administrator controls hether to ena!le this security level or not. &omeone at "utor access level cannot get to any of the configuration options ithin the system and cannot connect to orkstations outside the classroom groups created !y the administrator.

Conne&tion 'e&urity
7n order to prevent unauthori@ed connection to client machines( a Conne&tion passord can !e supplied !y the administrator. "his passord is encrypted and transmitted to all connected clients and stored there. 'henever any "utor program connects to a client machine on your netork( the Connection passord is verified and if they dont match( then the connection status for that client ill sho GInvalid Connection Password and no access to that client is alloed. 7n netorks that have multiple "utor programs installed that need to connect to the same client machines( each "utor program must have the same Connection passord.
$ote 7f you specify a Connection passord( you ill not !e a!le to connect to Client machines running version :.6.* or !elo. /lease make sure all your client machines are fully up-to-date.

Tutor Control Win"o#
enu bar "he menu !ar contains a series of drop-don menus that can !e used to access various commands( tools and configuration utilities.
Toolbar "he "ool!ar contains shortcuts to many of the most fre5uently used commands. Clicking on a !utton e%ecutes that command or action( eliminating the need to ork through the drop-don menus. /ositioning the cursor over an icon ill display a !rief description of its function in the Status bar and( if you pause the mouse( a tool-tip ill sho descri!ing the command.

'tatus Win"o# "his is simply used to output information( arning or error messages hilst using the program. >or e%ample( if the connection to a remote computer is lost( then a message is output to this indo informing you hat has happened. "o hide+sho this indo( select *iew I /tatus 0indow or( alternatively( right- click the mouse ithin the indo and select %ide this /tatus 0indow .
Hou can also clear the messages !y right-clicking the mouse and selecting Clear from the drop-don menu.
'tatus Bar "he &tatus Bar is displayed at the !ottom of the AB "utor Control 'indo. 7ts used to sho information a!out selected menu items or !uttons( the num!er of found orkstations( the num!er of connected orkstations and the current date and time.

"his command ill sho the tutorKs orkstation screen to all selected student orkstations. "his can !e used to demonstrate to the entire class ho to use the computer or an application etc. 'hen this command is activated( the ABControl indo is minimised.
"he tutors screen is only shon to the student orkstations selected. "he folloing dialog !o% is displayed to indicate ho to end the sho session and ena!le the annotate feature.
"o end the sho session( you simply click on the minimised ABControl icon( hich ill re-display the application and removes the tutorKs screen from all student orkstations.

9uring a &ho session( a useful Annotation feature is availa!le that can !e used to highlight areas of the screen you ant to dra the students attention too.
"o Annotate the &creen :. Click the AB "utor Control icon located in your 'indos system

. &elect the draing tool D-ine2 ,llipse2 Re&tangle or /ra#E 4. Move the mouse to the part of the screen to annotate and press
and hold the left mouse !utton and move to the mouse to dra the shape.
*. elease the left mouse !utton to apply the shape to the screen. 6. Click one of the shape tools again to dra another shape. 8. /ress the -o&% !utton to fi% the current shape tool so multiple
shapes can !e dra !y clicking( dragging and releasing the left mouse !utton ithout repressing the shape tool.
,. /ress the Clear !utton to remove all shapes from the screen ). #se the Colour ( 1ill and Wi"th !uttons to change the attri!utes of

Tip &elect one on the shape tools( click and release the mouse ithout moving and the shape ill !e dran at that point ith a fi%ed si@e !ased on the currently selected idth. "his can !e used to pace a series of dots on the screen all of e5ual si@e.

Clear /ress this !utton to remove all shapes from the screen.
-ine na!les the straight line draing tool. Click and hold the left mouse !utton at the start of the line( move the mouse to here the end of line should !e and release the mouse !utton. #se the Colour !utton to specify the lines colour and the Wi"th !utton to set the lines thickness.
,llipse na!les the elliptical draing tool. Click and hold the left mouse !utton to position the top left point of the rectangle to contain the ellipse( move the mouse to define the !ottom right point of the rectangle and release the mouse !utton. #se the Colour2 Wi"th and 1ill !uttons to set the attri!utes on the ellipse.
Click and release the left mouse !utton ill dra a filled circle centred on the mouse click. "he si@e of this circle is defined !y the line Wi"th.
Re&tangle na!les the rectangular draing tool. Click and hold the left mouse !utton to position the top left point of the rectangle( move the mouse to define the !ottom right point of the rectangle and release the mouse !utton.
Click and release the left mouse !utton ill dra a filled s5uare centred on the mouse click. "he si@e of the s5uare is defined !y the line Wi"th.
/ra# "his ena!les the free-hand draing tool. Click and hold the left mouse !utton and move the mouse to dra a line folloing the cursor. elease the mouse !utton to end the line.

Colour /ress this !utton to change the current line colour.
1ill /ress this !utton to change the fill colour of the ellipses or rectangles. &elect $o 1ill to create hollo shapes. /ress Custom to select your on custom colour.

"his command allos a student to e5uest ?elp from a tutor !y using the normal Chat dialog !o%. 'hen this command is sent( the Chat to
Tutor icon is added to the 'indos system tray.
'hen the student clicks this icon( the normal Chat dialog !o% is opened and( after a message has !een sent !y the student( the Chat dialog is automatically opened on the tutors orkstation.
Chat
"his command ill display a dialog !o% alloing the tutor to send a te%t message to all selected students. "he tutor can then ait for a reply !ack from the studentDsE.
"o send a message :. &elect the remote orkstationDsE you ant to send the message
to. 2. nter your name. "his lets the remote userDsE kno ho the
message is from. D"his name ill !e remem!ered for all su!se5uent chat sessionsE.
. nter the message you ant to send 4. /ress the 'en" !utton *. 'ait for replies to appear
/ressing the inimi5e !utton ill hide the chat indo and place a small
icon in the 'indos system tray D!ottom rightE. Clicking this icon ill restore the chat indo. Also hen replies are received from students then the chat indo is automatically displayed.
/ressing the Close !utton ill close the chat session. All remote orkstation chat indos ill also !e closed.

ill simply hide the students chat indo and re-display the icon in the 'indos system tray.

"his command ill display a dialog !o% alloing the tutor to send a simple te%t message to all selected students. "he message is displayed on the students screen in the form of a simple message !o% ith an 1$ !utton to clear the message. Hou can force the remote message !o% to close after a given num!er of seconds.
