Modelling provides the basis of all true leadership

Leaders must set the example for their followers.


Modelling provides the basis of all true leadership


The number one management principle

People do what people see.


Moses demonstrate this truth

The people watched him as he spent time with God, interceding for them in intimate, personal communion.

Exodus 33: 7-11.


If you want to enjoy an intimate relationship with God, as

Moses did, you must:1. Separate yourself regularly.

Come apart from the crowd. Key note here is: outside the camp



Moses did, you must:Seek God with all your heart. Pursue truth over popularity.

The key phrase here is: Sought the Lord.



Moses did, you will:Be watched by the public. You must be willing to take a risk, even though

it feels intimidating to be watched and scrutinized.



Moses did, you must:Learn to listen to hear God’s

voice. Practice the patience of silence and submission.



Moses did, you must:Enter covenant partnership with God. You must be faithful and

committed.


Be an example

Note a few areas God’s priests and leaders were to model. Lev.

6: 1-10:20


Be an example in the following areas

• Moral and ethical lifestyle.• Proper appearance.• Pure conscience.• Excellence in fulfilling duties.• Healthy relationships and restitution.• Establishing proper priorities.• Maintaining regulations and guidelines.• Initiating forgiveness and atonement.


The impact of Good and bad Kings: 1 Kings 14: 1-15:34

Good Kings• Drew loyalty from

their people.• Enjoyed victory

over sin.• Enjoy peace with

the kingdom.

Bad Kings• Drew rebellion

from their people• Saw bondage to

sin.• Suffered turmoil

within the Kingdom.


The impact of Good and bad Kings: 1 Kings 14: 1-15:34

Good Kings• Were affirmed by

God’s prophets.• Enjoyed

prosperity.• Opposed evil

kings.

Bad Kings• Were rebuked by

God’s prophets.• Often endured

natural disasters and war.

• Opposed good kings.


Leaders must be examples not exceptions

• Leaders often drift.• After accomplishments they often

abandon the lifestyle that helped them to reach the top.

• They do not set the same example any more.


Hezekiah2 Chronicles 29: 1-36

Hezekiah teaches the principle that if you want to succeed, you must

incarnate the life you desire in your followers.


Hezekiah2 Chronicles 29: 1-36

• He inherited an unholy mess.• He prepared the temple.• He restored legitimate worship.• Removed the idols.• He required a change in the land.


Events took place suddenly as Hezekiah modelled the life he

expected of others.


When Ezra heard of the sin and compromise of the Israelites,

he mourned and fastedHe then took logical steps to

bring about change.Ezra 9: 1-10:44


Ezra’s logical steps• 1. He felt genuine remorse over the

national sin.• 2. He issued a proclamation for the

Jews to gather in Jerusalem.• 3.He spoke clearly and directly

concerning the issues.• 4. He challenged the people to repent

and change.


Ezra’s logical steps

• 5. He accepted a plan for leaders to meet with the transgressors.

• 6. He started with the leaders who failed, then moved to the people.

• 7.He brought about public repentance and reformation.


Demonstration must precede imitation

• God expects leaders to incarnate the life their followers should live.

• People do what people see.• Leaders are models before they are

ministers, mentors or managers.


Notice what happened when Israel’s leaders failed to live model

lives1. They failed to preserve truth

for the people.



lives2. They dilute the people appetite for growth and

instruction



lives3. They caused many to

stumble due to their poor example.



lives4. They corrupted the covenant

God made with them.



lives5. They lost their credibility.


Leadership is caught more than taught

Biggest missing ingredient in Christian leaders today is

credibility.


Leadership is caught more than taught: Listen to Paul in 1

Cor. 4: 9-21His leadership was on display

and open for ridicule.



Cor. 4: 9-21He was willing to play the fool

in order to model a surrendered life



Cor. 4: 9-21He endured mocking from others, but didn’t waver.



Cor. 4: 9-21He sacrificed luxuries that

others enjoyed.



Cor. 4: 9-21He worked hard and didn’t

retaliate against opposition.



Cor. 4: 9-21He saw his role as a father,

living an exemplary life for his children.



Cor. 4: 9-21He urged his followers to

imitate his life.



Cor. 4: 9-21He sent Timothy to help them

live up to godly standards.



Cor. 4: 9-21He warned them of his own

coming.



Cor. 4: 9-21He reminded them that God’s

kingdom was not about talk, but power.


God can do for you what He did for them. Hebrews 13:7,8

God wants to lead through you. God is in the business of not only saving

lives, but also leading others.


Prayer Focus• Father, In the name of Jesus, I

surrender myself to walk in the Word. Your word living in me produces the Life in this world.

• The word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. It makes my way plain before me.

• I boldly and confidently say that my heart is fixed and established on the solid foundation – the Living Word of God! Amen


Learning, application and commitment: James 1: 22-25

• “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.

• Do what it says. • Anyone who listens to the word but does not do

what it says is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

• But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does.” (NIV)
