I refused to receive communion until I could receive it with deeper understanding and meaning. I sat in the pew of that chapel for almost an entire semester observing my classmates walk forward. I think most people desire an authentic experience of the divine; whether it is God, nature, in the smile of another human being, or their pet. We were created with the desire to seek awe and meaning. In the everyday mundane experiences in our lives, sometimes don’t pause to be as God created us. We are working, driving to work, picking up the kids from work, cooking dinner after work and preparing for work the next day. Pausing once a week to meditate on this ritual, the Holy Spirit revealed something wonderful for me. It was mystery. I didn’t need to have everything figured out about God. What was meaningful in communion was the community that gathered in that beautiful chapel. Together, we journeyed to the altar, sometimes we held one another’s hand, experiencing a deep sense of presence and belonging. As Yoshioko sensei said, the gift of God has already been given. I don’t have to sit and wait. Go get it! We arrived together, side by side, receiving the bread and the cup, remembering the life and the death of Christ. It was a reminder of the work we were called to do in our local churches, in the community and the world. Friends of God, we aren’t alone in the mundane, the busy and sometimes difficult parts of our lives. I encourage you to pause momentarily before journeying to the altar. Reflect on your what and why in our monthly communion ritual. God be with you. God fill you will the Holy Spirit that is love.

A Reflection on Communion

For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for[a] you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. It had become a ritual that I participated in because, quite simply, it’s what we did in worship each week.

Since the last newsletter, we have celebrated the retirement of Rev. Dr. Randi Walker, as she left us to enjoy her retirement in New Mexico. We celebrated our graduates from Pre-School all the way through College! We are also planning to renovate the Sanctuary so it becomes more flexible for all the growing ministries here at Sycamore. And, in the near future, the Women’s Fellowship will be on Pomona Street for the 4th of July celebration. Our major fundraising is just around the corner – BAZAAR! Please save the dates on your calendar for preparation, enjoyment of the bazaar and clean-up! A lot of volunteer opportunities abound!

I was asked to explain the rationale why we developed a “Search Committee” to find an Interim Pastor to lead our Church – and explain what the specific goals of the Interim Pastor are during this period of time. I hope this answers more questions than it raises! The reason for an interim pastor: Sycamore has a long history of “settled Pastor” following “settled Pastor” and we needed to break the cycle (NCNC recommendation) with an Interim Pastor who will serve Sycamore for 12-18 months (up to 24 months), but who cannot be the next “settled” Pastor. The role of the Interim Pastor is twofold:

1) Joining the system: Learning about Sycamore’s history, customs and congregation (Pastor Celeste has requested 2-3 months for this phase). Adopting significant “local” customs – becoming an “insider” while still remaining an “outsider” to further the work of the church.2) Helps the Church focus in specific ways on issues of identity and mission, as it evaluates it’s past and present to plan for its future. This includes working with the preschool, as they prepare to develop a strategic 5 year plan. This focus centers on the Five Developmental Tasks of the Interim time. a. *Coming to terms with the history of the church b. Discovering a “new” or broadened identity (answering questions regarding strategic vs. operational leadership and leadership development.) Providing leadership and support in updating the Sycamore profile for the next Settled Pastor and beyond. c. Strengthening lay leadership- develops in positive and creative ways for the good of the whole church d. Strengthens ties to the Denomination (beyond the 5 for 5 support) (For most of us, this was the first meeting with Reverend Davena Jones, Association Pastor for NCNC) e. *Prepares the Church for new leadership – the next “settled” English language Pastor (Strengthens the church’s capacity to be a growing, changing, forward looking body)

The time will come when Pastor Celeste calls us together to begin our part of preparing for the next settled English language pastor. Thank you for supporting her ministry with us during this short period of time.

Women's Fellowship by Karen Inoue

On Sunday, June 16th the Women’s Fellowship and the Fujinkai hosted a barbeque luncheon to celebrate Graduation Sunday. Kurt Buss and John Kartychak grilled the hamburgers and hot dogs for approximately 40 people. Reiko Kamada, Roslyn Kartychak, Marilyn Head, Gloria Morita, Karen Nishikawa, Kaori Davis, Hitomi Yoshioka and Akiko Taylor took care of the food preparation and other kitchen duties for the luncheon. A cake was provided by the Women’s Fellowship for all graduates from preschool through college. The Women’s Fellowship and Fujinkai were happy to work together on this occasion to celebrate with the graduates. On July 4th the Women’s Fellowship will be having a booth at the City of El Cerrito 4th of July Festival at Cerrito Vista Park from 10:00 am-6:00 pm. Along with Marilyn Head’s paintings we will be selling calendar gift bags, pressed flower cards, plants and other miscellaneous craft items. Please come and celebrate July 4th and drop by and say hello. Look for the blue and white Sycamore Church banner. The booth will located on Pomona Ave. across from the food court. SAVE THE DATE!!! Sunday, December 8th please come and join us at The Women’s Fellowship 25th Annual Christmas Luncheon. We will be celebrating our 25th anniversary at the Berkeley Country Club (formerly the Mira Vista County Club) in El Cerrito. All women in the Sycamore Church family are invited. Details to follow in the coming months.to fill the sanctuary. For events where maximum seating is needed, we can use the folding chairs that we already own. This saves both money and storage area when the chairs aren't needed.

On June 9 we made a presentation to the congregation who were gathered for lunch in honor of Rev. Dr. Randi Walker's farewell. Several helpful suggestions were made, including capturing the plaques currently on the backs of the pews and making them into a single plaque to honor the original donors, as well as to honor John Takeuchi for his donation.

We also talked about needing to paint the sanctuary and replace the curtains. The church council voted to begin this project using the money that John Takeuchi willed to the church. However, there will be opportunities for people to donate either time or money towards the project as we go forward.

The first work party to remove the pews is planned for Sunday July 21. We will send out more information soon.

As mentioned in our last newsletter, the Steering Committee is moving forward with the plan for modernizing the sanctuary. This will involve taking out the pews and replacing them with new chairs, which will give us much more flexibility in our use of the space. A big part of the plan is to replace the flooring in the sanctuary, and at the same time to redo the flooring for much of the upstairs area, including the hallways, the Issei Room, 3 offices and the nursery. -- instead of carpet or VCT tile (which is what we have downstairs), we have decided on LVP planking. The advantages are that it is as sturdy and cleanable as the vinyl tile, but looks like hardwood.-- we are still discussing chair options, including that we will only buy 50-60 chairs rather than enough to fill the sanctuary. For events where maximum seating is needed, we can use the folding chairs that we already own. This saves both money and storage area when the chairs aren't needed. On June 9 Sycamore Church said goodbye to Dr. Randi Walker, who had been a member and in covenant with us for twelve years. Dr. Walker had retired from her teaching position at Pacific School of Religion earlier this spring, and had completed her retirement plans for returning to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she and her husband have many friends and relatives. Although we will miss her very much, we were happy to have the opportunity to enjoy fellowship with her at a farewell luncheon in her honor. Mark Endo and Chris Aptaker prepared a delicious meal for the occasion featuring a chicken and vegetable dish with a mixed green salad vinaigrette and the church provided a decorated sheet cake with strawberry and cream filling. Geoff Boughman, our church photographer, made a special copy of this year's Church Easter picture, Yoshimi Kinoshita Welty and the children of Sycamore presented her with a rock painted by the Tomodachi Kids for her garden in New Mexico, along with a card handmade by the children, and Georgia Fujikawa read out loud a pressed flower card from the whole church family made for Randi by Gloria Morita, text composed by Marilyn Head, summarizing Randi's many contributions to our church life and expressing our wishes for her happy retirement in New Mexico. The permanent hallway display of our church history which Dr.Walker donated at the time of our 100th Anniversary will remind us of her every Sunday as will the wildflowers blooming in the churchyard every spring. We will miss her many talents which she gave so freely to the service of the church, but most of all, we will miss her.

Farewell to Dr. Randi Walker

Students graduating from middle school, high school and college were honored on June 16. Special recognition was given to Porsche Noble who graduated from Albany High School. Porsche attended Sycamore Preschool, was a member of Tomodachi Time as well as the youth group. She was also a member of the hand bell choir and played in special performances at Easter and Christmas Eve services. She has been very helpful in the game booths at the bazaar. Porsche also participated in many Bible Day camps, first as a camper, then as a counselor and this year, as the director. For her many years of participation in the life of the church, the Board of Christian Education unanimously voted her as the recipient of the 2019 McGinnis Scholarship. May God continue to be with her as she continues her education at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Attach picture of Porsche and the ministers.

Graduation Sunday

A big thank you goes to the devoted mailing crew who folded and mailed the Sycamore Tree each month, some for decades. The crew consisted of Silvia Akinaga, George and Midori Goto, David and Ellen Inada, Tom Inada, Roslyn Kartychak, Eiko Matsuoka and Gloria Morita. The newsletters would not have gone out without this crew meeting each month. Thank you for your dedication! The Sycamore Tree is now sent via e-mail each month. Please notify the church office if you would like to receive hard copies or if you would like to be removed from the mailing list. Thank you.

Thank you!

-Silvia Akinaga who has faithfully volunteered as the receipts treasurer for many, many years is retiring. If you would like to fill her position, please contact Kurt Buss at [email protected]. All that is required is to record the donations and make deposits at the bank. This is a shared position so you do not have to shoulder this responsibility alone.

- If you are looking for ways to participate in church services, we are always looking for liturgists, ushers, receptionists and someone to provide alter flowers. Please contact the church office or use SignupGenius to volunteer.
