The annual report of the Commissioner of In-

AninMitional very large amounts derived from theexcises on tobacco. Thus fh flour-ishes on the people" vices the indulgence inliquors and tobacco or at least their indulgcuvein superfluities. The world over this is the case.

II..v Siik CtKjiitD a Dinnex. A jouDg ladyof this city, says the New York Dispatch , readin the paper that joun ladies of Georgia arc..)injs.tin at the State fair for . the prize aa thebest evok. She thought it a moct noble andwomanly pift t be able to put upon the table awe.l-ORjke- d and relishable meal. On Friday,l.er mother wont out in the afternoon, and theloving daughter toIJ her he need not hurry backa.-- she would make upper. About seven o'clockthe family pat down to the supper-tabl- e. Thelaughter told her father that she had cooked all

toatTnuMl herself. The father gazed on her withadmiration, an 1 wiiJ that ehc would be a treas-u-.i

t the man who fot her f r a wife. He thensaid grace, and raised the cover of the sUr.k dish,lb elevated the carving knife and asked for theplates t be passed to him. He stuck the knifeand sawe l away at it for a while, he looked atthe edge of the carving knife and awayaain. The knife made little impression. liet.ik up the steak nnd held it near the lamp. Itwasn't a ttea'i that had been fried. It was apieee of India-rubbe- r that the lady of the housekept in the refrigerator to place her iocreatup.t.s on. The admiring parent laid down tlcsteak, sai 1 nothing, but his countenance lookedas though lie would have listened with pleasureto a sermon of the most sulphurous sort. Hethen asked for the eggs. The tureen was handedto him. II- - Uwk oiT the lid. lie gazed uponthe eg?, and then faid : "I'll be damned ifI'm wicked." And he turned to his daughterand ed her bow ehe cooked the eggs. Shetold him she had kept them in water till it wasboiling, and then poured off the water and mashedthe c"s. He laid down the dish. He called fortea and bread anl butter. He frread the butterhi the bread, and then took a bite. He splat-

tered it over the table and grasped the cup of teaand tojk a swallow. He did more spluttering, and a little coughing, and tears rolled down bis

hecks, and when he recovered he sang a hymnof thanksgiving in a way that would have beenproline in a less religious man. Then he thusad.lrcs.sed his daughter: "Marion, your inten-

OPENING OF THE LEGISLATURE.

SPECIAL SESSION, FEB. 12, 1874.

1 ully two hours before the time set for openingthe Assembly. (12 o'clock, noon.fthe people begunto assemble in the Court House ground, and at aiiuartei to 12, there was probably a thousand meD,women and children in the neighborhood. At thatmoment a procession" of the ciieen's adherentsmarched down the street, liumbciiug perhaps 200person., with drums beating, who gave and took aconsiderable amount of cheering. The place re-

served fur spectators in the hall will probable hold3uU persons, and it was immediately filled to over-flowing on the opening of the doors.

The desks of the Nobles and Representativeswere arranged in a semi-circl- e around the Hall, and members ceneially were iu their seats beforethe h"iir. On the right of the President's dais, were .eats reserved for Foreign Hiploniatic andConsular Representatives, and among those presentwe noticed the Ameiican Minister Resident, theRritisli Commissioner and Consul (ii-nera- theFrench Consul aud Consuls ol other nationalities.

At 12 o'clock, precisely, Mr. R. if. Stanley calledthe Assembly to order, and after prayer by theHon. Mr. I.onoaea, His Ex. P. N'ahaolelua wuscalled to the Chair pro. tempore.

The roll of Nobles and Representatives was thencalled, lo which all responded except Hon. C G.Htrpkius (absent from the country).

Hon. Mr. Kaukaha moved lo go into nominationfor permanent officers.

Rehire proceeding to an election of officers. Hon.Mr. Alt-d- raised the question, as to whether theRepresentatives of lb72 or those of 1874 were theproper mies to elect a Sovereign. He doubted alsowhether the members now returned would all befound, on examination, to be entitled to sit. Hemoved t In reference of this question to the Judgesof the Supreme Court.

Hon. Mr. Wilder rose to a point of order. TheIlouse was not yet organized, and could not enter-tain nny tnnt'era nf hiiiiiiioca ouutile of Choosingofficers.

Supported by Hon. Mr. Kaukaha. who said hehad long since settled this question in his owniuiii.1 lie .honed thern would, be. xio attemnt toobstruct the business of the nation like that putforth by the member for Lahaina. Mr. Kaukahaurged that the House must proceed to organizebefore discussing any questions. Hon. Mr. Kaaialso ably supported this view. As yet this wasonly an assemblage of persons, and not the Legis-

lative Assembly. But he thought that credentialsof Representatives should be first examined andreported on and members sworn, before any busi-

ness whatever cau be done. The acting President ruled that the electiou of

permanent officers was the only business now inorder. The House ten proceeded to ballot forofficers, with the following result:

President, His Ex. I. Nahaolelua, Vice Presiden.Hon. S. K. Kaai; Secretary, Mr. R. H. Stanley; In-

terpreter, V. L. Wilcox; Sergeant-a- t Arms, W. C.

raike; Chaplain, J, N. Puikuli. ' ".

The election.of messenger was postponed for thepresent.

The credential of the Representatives werethen placed on the President's table and referredto a select Committee for examination, who, afterreturning into the House, reported that the creden-tials of all the Representatives, as sent to theMlnist. r of the Interior, were in due aud legalform. Adopted.

On motion of Hon. Mr. Kupihea, Hon. A. S.Hartwi 11. Associate Justice ol the Supreme Court, was requested to administer the Constitutionaloath of office.

Judge Hartwell then proceeded to administer theoath, first to the Nobles and then to the Represent-atives, the deputation from each island by itself. The officers were then sworn in.

His Ex. C. R. Bishop, Minister of Foreign Affairs, then read the following official statement to theIlouse :

By order of the Court. W. R. Seal, Clerk.

NOTES OF THE WKKK.His Majesty Kalakaua was born Nov. 1C, 1S3C,

and is therefore now in his SStb. year.

Cold. The weather haa been unusually coldnights and early morning?, during the past week;the thermometer occasionally marking G3. v

Also to Capt. A. Fuller for late dates and mem-

that the Queenites have a secret organization, themembers of which are pledged to avenge, on everygood opportunity, their defeat in the Legislature,Let the authorities be vigilant and prompt.

Your Money or Your Life. One of the Repre-

sentatives on being attacked by the mob on Thursday, gave them all the money he had in his pocket some

180 and they let him off. Bnt the next crowd thatmet Lim administered a terrible pounding. ,

Rioters Arrested. Up to yesterday noon, the po-

lice had made twenty-thre- e arrests of persona impli-

cated directly or indirectly, in the riot of TLarsdaylast. Some who were especially prominent are not tobe found at present, being undoubtedly concealed by

part of the past week. No less than five coasterswhich left port, have been compelled to return on account of the strong trades, some with loss of sails. The Falkitiburg, which arrived on the Oth lost someof her head sails.

Yesterday, tueon Emma sent a message to thePalace, acknowledging His Majesty Kalakaua as thelawful King, and asking for the Royal prerogative forthe discharge of the rioters now inprisonl Ilia Majesty has however decided to allow the law to take itscourse in their cases.

Oleamargarine. Doubtless many of our readershave seen items going the rounds of the press, stat-

ing that a new process of making butter (to whichthe above name has been given) has been patentedin the United States. We are assured that many ofthe first-cla- ss hotels of New York, Chicago and else-

where, and most of the Atlantic steamships are usingthis new kind of butter. Very naturally old fash-

ioned butter makers and many butter users, will beisgusted at the idea of making the article from suet,

lut after reading a description of the process in thelew York Times (too long for our columns) theyill probably be open to conviction. A manufactory

cf this r.c-- ty!e of butter has been established inSin Francisco, and Bolles Si Co. of this city havereceived a sample, which is well worth examination.Ve have tested it, and had we not been told ina Vance what it was, should have pronounced it afair sample of inland butter.

Caoutchouc. (Pronounce it Ioochookt and youfill fee right.) Wo hive interviewed this singularAustralian production of nature, and advise ourreaders that it is well worth their whiles to do like-vis- e.

They will see a black gelding, about fifteenhands high, well made and compact, having fine e'eanlegs wi.h powerful forearms and thighs and a cleanblood-lik- e but unusually broad head, from which apiir of bright eyes beam with good temper and do-

cility. In all respects he would be considered as quite &

Lindsoiae horse anywhere, but for the entire absenceo? hair, on ail parts of his body, and examinationwith a microscope fails to reveal any signs that heerer possessed any. Ile was caught some six yearsago among a " mob " of wild horses in the neighbor-hood of the Ba'oane river in Queensland. His pres-

ent owners, Messrs. Oat &, AVitchell, paid a prettylanJsorne price for him, and since then they havefrequently refused as high as 1,500 for Caoutohouc. They intend to proceed on to the United States andEurope by the next steamer, on a tour of exhibitionof their hairless horse. We may add that he is par-

ticularly quiet and docile, appears to enjoy beinghandled, and apparently has a predilection for chil-

dren, whom experience has no doubt taught him areapt to pander to his depraved appetite for candies. His levees since Wednesday last have been wellattended, and we learn he will le continued on exhi-

bition another week.

The Influence of tut Prims. Since the death ofthe King and the appearance in the field of a second

candidate for the Succession to the Thrcne, there hasbeen, for a small community like this a profuse, expenditure of printer ink. Circulars and mani-

tite for political excitement grew on what it fed upon. From the 4th to the 11th instant, from the office ofthis journal alone, about 51,000 copies were issuedof one and another kind of publication, but mostly

circulars on the subject cf the succession. This wiltgive our readers abroad something of an idea of thenative Hawaiiaus' appreciation of the influence ofpress.

RIOT OF THE QUEENITES.

The Conrt House in the Hands of a Mobthey Demand a 'Reversion of the Voteof the Assembly, and that Emma be madeQueen Destruction of Property and Mur-derous Attack on Representatives Inter-vention by an Armed Force from Ameri-can and British Ships of war.

When the announcement was made by the Presi-

dent of the Assembly on Thursday (at a few n iuutesbefore 3 p. m.) that Prince lMvin Kalakaua waselected King of the Hawaiian Islands, several at-

tempts were made in the audience to cheer, but theywere promptly suppressed by the police. Somecheering was heard from the crowd outside, but itwas mingled with yells and cries of rage from themob of Queenites. Orators, mostly of the "saiucullolet " class, were busy here and there, excitingthe passions of their hearers against the Representa-tives, for having, as they declared, voted against thewishes of the people in making Kalakaua King.

Meantime the Committee appointed to wait on thethe Prince issued from the Court House and wereabout enterinz a carriage, when &a attack wo modupon them by the mob. They were severely hustled, and their clothes torn, aud were compelled to beat ahasty retreat, the Court House from therear entrance. In the rush at this moment, a for-

eigner, named John Foley, who endeavored to rescueMajor Moehonua (against whom the mob appeared tobe particularly spiteful) was struck by some one inthe crowd, whereupon he squared himself and struckright and left, but only for a moment. A blow witha stick from behind felled him to the ground and hewas jumped upon and would have been killed in allprobability, but that Major Wodehousc, the BritishCommissioner, who happened to be near, forced hisway through the crowd and Btood over the man untilhe was carried away, badly but not seriously hurt.

The Committee having got back inside the CourtHouse, the mob now surged around to the front en-

trance, where with savnge yells they demanded thatthe Representatives appear. Whenever one of thesewas seen at an upper window, fists and sticks wouldbe shaken at him, and Lbi ehout went up, "Lookoutfor yourself !" while the' eyes of the upturned faces

glared with demoniacal fury. Repeated attemptswere made by the Marshal and 1'eputy, and by well-kno-

foreigners to persuade the mob to dispersepeaceably, but these attempts only seemed to still

further excite their unreasJuWflT dcc1arcJ

that they had nothing against any foreigner, buFo'iAj -

wanted to get hold of the native Representatives, to j

wreak on them their vengeance for having votedagainst Queen Emma. The situation of the mem- - j

bcrs was now getting precarious, shut np unarmed in j

a building, the doors of which would yield to a mod- - j

crate assault, with a howling mob without, apparently j

thirsting for their lives. The cry was now raised by the mob (about four j

o'clock) "Break in the back doors!" tho front j

being guarded by the police. (It is proper to state j

just here, that throughout the riot, the native police f

were of little or no use.) One or two rushes, apiece of lumber m;ed as a buttering ram, and thefolding doors yielded and the mob poured in. Themembers were now mostly all in the upper portionof the building, with several of the Ministers, Judges, and other officials. For a time, after gaining anentrance, the mob devoted their attention to thedestruction of property, and appeared to forget theRepresentatives, while they proceeded to smash fur-

niture, tear up papers and mutilate book9, in theoffices of the Attorney General, of Judge Hartwell,Judge Widemann, the Police Magistrate, and thePolice Court Room. .Many valuable private andsome public documents were ruthlessly destroyed, ofa nature that can never be replaced. Fortunatelythe records of the Supreme Court, in the Clerk'soffice up stair?, were not reached by the vandals. All the windows and most of the wfnduw-sas- h of theCourt House, loth above and below, were brokenwith coral stones thrown by the mob or with clubs.

And now commenced the attack on the Repre-sentatives, as they were endeavoring to escape fromthe building. C ubs, improvised from table andchair legs, were freely usc-J-, and that murder out-

right was not accomplished can only be explained bythe number of the assailants all striking blindly atonce. A few foreigners too, were active and cour-ageous in endeavoring to recne and save the mem-bers. As it was, four wre seriously injured byblows about the head, viz.: Messrs. Kipi and Haupuof Hilo; Nahinu of South Kona; and Moehonua ofHonolulu. The following were bally, but not seriously cut an l bruised : Messrs. Lono:.ea and Birch,of Wailoku; Kaiue and Kupihea, of Molokai; Ka--pule, of Makawao; Koakanu, of Koloa, Kauai; andKakani, of Hana, Maai. We have heard of but oneperson outside the Representatives who was attackedand beaten J. Koii Unauna, a known strong partisan of Kalakaua. Hon. W. T. Martin and his sonHon. J. II. Martin, both members of the Assembly, barely escaped from the mob, through the courageousassistance cf foreign friends. A notable circum-stance throughout the whole of the riot was thatwith the one exception at the beginning, no foreignerwas molc-stel- , though if the rioters had not beenj;sr. yi jy a show of an armed force just at the

en they were, indiscriminate violence, robbery

and art. n would probably have rcsultel throughoutthe city. i

Imraediatrly after the attack cn tho Cccmittee, aadi.crib?d above, tome of the members suggested Uita..MMic bo sent for from the ships of war in theL arbor. But it was not until further violence h I

struction in the building, no sooner caught sight ofthe armed force than they dropped their clut andmingled with the crowd, which toon after grmdeallydispersed. A few were arrested on the spot, but themajority inarched cfT in triumph, shouting and hur-rahing for the ijuecin. To hr rreiJcuc they re-

paired in a crowd, and saluted her ith exultantcheers, while some of her pattisau leaders made

speeches. In this Connection It ahculd be

suted, that while the riot was at Its height, a mem-

ber of the House cf Noble drove to the Queen's trsi.deuce aud begged of her to go down to the CourtHouse and ate her personal Influence lu dispersingthe mob and preventing the spilling of blood, vth'u h

he represented as immiuent. The Queeu Is stated tohave treated this message with Indifference, as noconcern of hera. Subsequently she promised anothergentleman that she would go, but did not go. hhesent however, a note to be read to the rioters, which

was addressed to My People,' and was in suUtaneeto this effect : " That If they could not obtai theirdesires now, perhaps they had better wait until themorrow, when a new election for Sovereign could t- -

Majesty 'a residence, speech-maki- ng and boasting,,after sundown, when a file of the TVfrf marque

marched into "the yard aud dispersed them, the .liee

making one or two arrest. v

During Thursday night the foreign forces keptjiossession of the Court House and mounted guard

the Palace, at the residence of the Governor of Oahu ,

and at the barracks, prison. Armory and the Gov-

ernment offices, while a detachment of the HonoluluRifles was stationed at .the Powder Msgaiine. Lur-

ing the night three shots are teported to have been

fired at the guard at the Court Houae, from behind

fences in the neighborhood. These were supposed to

have been from some of the rioters, who weie prowl-in- g

about in the darkness of the night A man was

seen skulking along by the corner of V Udor Co.'s

lumber office, but on being challenged l.y the sentry,he disappeared. A few minutes later, the first shot

was fired from the lumber yard, followed by two

others, from different dircotioiis. There was however

no farther interruption to the quiet of the night, and

Honolulu rested under the protection of the United

States and Great Britain. :

I Writ ten for the 1. C. Advertiser, February Dili J

A new Legislature is soon to meet, a new Bovereign

to be chosen. There are two candidates for theThrone, aud whichever one is chosen will have the

power in unison with the Legislature to win thegratitude of the people, and promote the national

prosperity by such changes in the lnw and Consti-

tution if necessary, as will promote a more rigid

econo.ny in the administrutiou, and lighten theburden of taxation, or at least exp.end a larger por-

tion of the publio funds in works of national benefit

ami less for personal interest. --

To begin with, the salary of tho Sovereign should

be reduced to $15,000 per annum, u'ifnonf rqui.iitft, or at most, without exemption from taxationfur a limited amount. This is as nmcfi"a this Hinall

and poor nation with a small revenuo should everpay to it Hnvpreijrn. ..'Tho head of the nation should economize as well asthe people. It would be an honor and glory for himto do so, and this salary would still be more thantwice as large as was paid to Kaniehameha III.

The income from the crown lands should go intothe public treasury and their management le luthe hands of the Minister of Finance.

The four depart msnts of Foreign Relations, Inte-

rior, Finance and Law (Attorney General), shouldbe held and administered by two persons, with thesame salaries to each, as are now paid to the head cfesch department, say $5,000. Thus $10,000 wouldbe saved in the Ministerial Department. The sala-

ries of clerks and inferior cfuoers should not bediminished ; but perhaps the number scatteredthroughout the islands might be. Fair pay and fullwork should be the principle.

The entire receipts of the year commencing Aprillet, 1810, and ending March 31st, 1&17, were esti-

mated at $110,000, and the expenses at $100,00).In 1812, when Dr. Judd entered the Governmentservice, the debts were $100,000. In 1840, withthis comparatively small revenue, it had all beenpaid! Tho military appropriation, except a smallone for national courtesies should, be discontinued.

that the national expenses can beIt is not suppw-- .. tL.i.cti...reduced to their old stanultu, "Jin U.tfina Uki-a-

ought to be greatly reduced, and in the opinion of agreat many competent persons they ought to bereduced in the particulars above mentioned. TheJudiciary Department could doubtless be so remodeledas greatly to reduce its expenses without sacrificingits efficiency. For thirty years salaries and expensesua,e een incrtaiing, whilst the people have beendecrtating. Then the expenses were- - about $1.00for each man, woman and child; now they are about$9.00 for each man, woman and child.

If tho Sovereign and the Legislators truly andsincerely desire the perpetuity, the prosperity, the.independence of the nation they will cut down theexjenses. It can be done, and whero the will existsa way can be devised and it should bo done withoutloss of time. The pay also of the members of tbLegislature should be reduced to what it was beforethe last advance. And there should be no sinecures, and no pensions not based upon justice and tbnconformed to the strictest economy to the revenue.

A rigid reform in national economy Is demanded, and if the Sovereign and Ministry and Legislaturesincerely desire the good of the nation, they willshow it by their acts, and be more in earnest topromote the public good than personal emolument.

Thirty years ago the expenses were $100,000, endthe native population about 100,600. Now thenative population is about 50,000 and the expensesabout $150,000, making an absolute Increase of 450per cent, in the expenses, but when compared withthe actual population, then and now, 000 per cent.

,Yow there is more actual labor in the revenuedepartment than then, and a larger force is required;but then the Government was in process of organiza-tion with outside complications, and the labors of theMinisterial and law departments were greater than '

now. The statements about expenses and populationare not exact; but reference to official reports willshow them to lo nearly correct, and the urgentnecessity of the reform called lor.

The native population of the islands by estimateand census have, at various times, been as follows :

ITT9, Estimated 1 1 Cook 400.000" by Missionaries , 143.000

12, Qffic.al Census. 130.S1S13, " . 108,6791850, " . SJ.20JISM, " " . M, . 71,019 "

JHOO, " . .1.... 67,04" M . tura

1S72, " . - ai,csiCaptain Cook's estimate Las been supposed to be

too large, bat if the ratio of decrease from 1779 to1832 was as great as from 1832 to 1872, in proporition to the number of years and inhabitants, it wasremarkably correct; but when we consider the nu-merous wars of the first period, and the fatar pesti-lence about the commencement of the present oentury,it wculd seem to - an under estimate. -

WOULD SUGGEST TO OUR CUSTOMERS AND THE PUBLIC GENERA-LLY, that the present is a suitable time to repair and paint houses and It is short sightedeconomy to let them go another year without giving them one or two coats of good paint. The dry winds and burningsun of the summer, and the heavy rains that will penetrate the unprotected buildings daring the succeeding winter, willdo damage to property that will cost the owners three times the amount that it would take to paint them now.

It has been generally understood, we believe, by those who pretend to know anything about paints, that Hub-buc- k

k Son's Lead and Zine are the BEST Paints ever brought into this Market, In fact, some go so far as to assertthey are the BEST Paints known to the world. We take pleasure In informing our friends and the friends of everyconcern, here and elsewhere, that we have recently received an Invoice of White Lead and Zinc, which is said to besuperior to Hubbuck k Son's celebrated paint. We now have on hand and for sale, four of White Lead, andthree qualities of White Zine, including Hubback k Son's best t rands. And we think we can suit any and everybodyin the Paint Line, in regard to quality and price.
