Aldrich’s fi nal fi lms, long neglected or disparaged, demand to be reconsidered as the fi nest in his considerable fi lmography. …All the Marbles
is a sublime moral and artistic legacy, Hustle a heart-rending urban poem about an impossible love affair, The Choirboys a violent, relentlessly nihilistic farce. Among his late masterpieces there is one that has been completely forgotten, a victim of its commercial failure. I saw the complete version of Twilight’s Last Gleaming (1977) at the Cinémathèque française almost twenty years ago, in the print that was then in distribution, and I also saw it at a local cinema in the French version, L’Ultimatum des trois mercenaires, which the distributor had cut by forty-seven minutes. But that fi lm was nothing like the original. Twilight’s Last Gleaming, starring the brilliant Burt Lancaster and a constellation
(Lorenzo Buccella)
Confi dentialCurtis Hanson, Once Upon a Time in Americadi Sergio Leone e The King of Comedy di The King of Comedy di The King of ComedyMartin Scorsese.

of Aldrich’s most regular actors, is a paranoid fable about the atomic threat (the great theme of this explosive fi lmmaker). Of all Aldrich’s late fi lms it is without a doubt the most personal and ambitious in terms of both its subject and its mise en scène with a systematic use of the split screen. Aldrich was one of the fi rst (along with Richard Fleischer) to experiment with this technique of fragmenting a shot into several images in a football match scene in Mean Machine. Brian De Palma was to recall this is his early fi lms, which in the end are far closer to Aldrich than to Hitchcock. The complete, restored version of Twilight’s Last Gleaming is screening today as a world première. It will soon be released in France, by the excellent distribution company Carlotta, both theatrically and on Blu-ray.(Olivier Père)

with Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, you name them… I started the careers of anybody from Jennifer Connelly and Will Smith to Leonardo DiCaprio, earlier Julia Roberts, Russell Crowe. I did seven movies with Robert De Niro, whom I was talking to last night – he was in Tahiti. When you work with people more than once or twice, they almost become family.
What does it take in a script to get to you?We get maybe 50 scripts a week. It has to hit the nerve, it must have a specifi c emotion – it must be unique in at least one area, exceptional, whatever feels good. I was already producing The War of the Roses, a black comedy about divorces, when Pretty Woman came up. I was myself getting divorced at the time – and I thought I would do the two opposites. But who wants to see a love story of a hooker and a businessman, they all said? Nobody believed in it, and the less they believed, the more interested I became to do it.What does the Locarno prize mean to you?To tell you the truth I didn’t know how prestigious it was – I thought it was just another festival. But after some research I realised that this is something special. Usually I do not go – I didn’t go to the screening in Cannes this year of Once Upon a Time in America, there are always thousands of people coming up to you with ideas and screenplays. But this takes respect.(Jørn Rossing Jensen(Jørn Rossing Jensen( )
How you ever fi gured out how many people you have entertained with your fi lms?More than ten billion? Pretty Woman alone was seen by 150-200 million people in the cinemas, on top come video and television. The Alvin and the Chipmunks fi lms took 400-450 million … I will really have to calculate on that.
Arnon Milchan5 questions toMilchan5 questions toMilchan
If you were to select one fi lm from the 150 you have made and say ‘this is my greatest achievement’, which would it be?I think Once Upon a Time in America. I saw it yesterday for the fi rst time in maybe 10 years, and said to myself ‘You have to be very innocent to even think of doing something like this,’ with 120 speaking parts, 11 months of shooting six days a week, in Rome, Florida, Venice, Montreal, St Petersburg, all over the world. We rented the Orient Express for a shot that lasts a few seconds in the fi lm. Today it would probably cost $400 million, if somebody had the patience; we made it at $28.8 million. You have worked with so many directors and actors – who meant something particular to you?I would say Sergio Leone (Once Upon a Time in America) became very close, because we lived and worked together in New York for three years – one for preparations, one for shooting, one for post-production. I have great relationships
The Israeli producer, who will tonight receive Locarno’s Premio Raimondo Rezzonico, always looks for something ‘exceptional’ in a script – the more nobody believes in it, the more interested he is to fi lm it

Roses), passa con nonchalance dall’impegno (JFK(JFK( , JFK, JFK Natural Born Killers) all’intrattenimento puro (Free Willy, Free Willy, Free Willy Mambo Kings).

Time Travelling with Noémie Lvovsky
Piazza Grande The Director
Is making a fi lm a way of talking to one’s parents and those one loves or has loved? It’s true that Camille redouble talks a lot about loss. When you make a fi lm you can’t think about the audience, it’s too abstract, too broad. So you address someone in particular. Maybe you do it for the actors, the producer and the crew. And then for two or three people, who are, or are not, a secret. Is adolescence a more cinematic age than any other? It’s a period in life when you are all ages at the same time. Adolescence is an age when you can behave like a little kid and also have the maturity of an elderly person. It’s fascinating to fi lm since over the course of a single day you can move from euphoria to total despair.Did you conceive of Camille redouble as a fantasy fi lm right from the start, at the script-writing stage? From the moment there was time-travel involved, obviously there was a science-fi ction dimension, but we tried to write the story in the most realistic manner possible, by putting ourselves in Camille’s position, as if it was really happening to us.This is the fi rst time you’ve acted in one of your own fi lms. That was a decision made very late on in the process. I never write with particular actors in mind. It was my producer Jean-Louis Livi who insisted I play the role and asked me to do several tests before seeing other actresses. I wasn’t very good, so he suggested I start again, this time with make-up, hair-do, costumes… I was better because conditions on a shoot have an intensity that you just don’t get in front of a little video camera. The crew and the producer were keen, and for me it was the sheer pleasure of acting that sealed the deal. For a few years now you’ve acted for other directors. As a child I wanted to be an actress but I stopped when I was fi fteen when I was told something terrible: I wasn’t old enough! So I abandoned the idea and then a decade or so later I came back to it because friends who were directors asked me. So it happened by chance and I liked that. I feel like I know how it is for actors, getting stage-fright, the act of offering up your face, your body to the camera. (O. P.)

Max Youngman, Almost a Modern Dorian Gray

Rich with poker-faced cynicism, Bob Byington’s tragic-comedy hops and skips over 35 years in the life of Max Youngman, so appropriately named as after he opens a blue suitcase and is bathed in a Kiss Me Deadly-like light, he stops aging. Max is visually
stuck in his late twenties, while all his relationships and acquaintances grow up around him. Not invested enough in the disruptive events of his own life to be considered a postmodern Dorian Gray, Max, as played completely deadpan by Keith Poulson, shrugs off whatever roadblocks he places in his own life-path: failed marriages, dead-end jobs,
constant rejection and betrayal, and abrupt deaths. Five-year leaps in time are connected by memorable vignettes and a catchy score from Vampire Weekend bassist Chris Baio, and Byington’s script moves things along via a trenchant, dark
and deeply personal sense of humor, with a parade of hilarious non sequiturs exchanged between Max, often, his best and only friend Sal (the great Nick Offerman, also one of the fi lm’s producers) – the kind of pal who sleeps with your wife in your pool house. “Father. Lover. Fighter. Entrepreneur” reads Max’s tombstone, and Byington’s fanciful fi lm about a man watching his life fl y by, with its two major locations being a steakhouse and a graveyard, approaches poignancy through defi antly off-kilter means. Features a guest appearance by Cineasti del presente jury member Alex Ross Perry as a man who wants to buy ice cream. (Mark Peranson)

and in ersatz representations around the city (the hospital, a café with walls lined with photographs). The key scene in Museum Hours takes place in the majestic Bruegel room, where a guest lecturer argues that Bruegel gave landscape in and of itself its due tor the fi rst time, and proposes alternative interpretations for the focal points of his paintings. This interpretive speech clarifi es all the inserted 16mm fragments of Vienna cityscape that came before, and changes the way one sees things after: Cohen has constructed a radical work poised between documentary and fi ction where the boundaries of the frame are infi nite. When you come to understand that everything is of equal value in this huge fi lm, and you’re left to make your own connections between them, it’s truly liberating. (Mark Peranson)
Given unprecedented access to one of the world’s great museums, Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, Jem Cohen has crafted a delicately overwhelming narrative about observation, loneliness, the city, the transience of all things and how art shapes and refl ects daily experience. And a whole lot more. In an unremittingly gray Vienna cityscape, two people unite – museum guard Johann (Bobby Sommer) and Anne (Canadian music legend Mary Margaret O’hara), a fi rst-time visitor from Montreal who has come to Vienna to attend to a hospitalized distant cousin. In this late capitalist, Internet age, they get to know each other through personal contact and conversation, both inside the museum itself

Favole&fallimenti in versione punk

When the Painting Ends, the Filmmaking BeginsHistoire(s) du cinéma
“Morris investigates cities – as an artist she knows it is diffi cult to make a portrait of a city, because the moment you have fi nished it, the city is elsewhere. But when the painting ends, the fi lmmaking begins, captivating this complexity, or psychology, of urban environment.”“Her fi lms are generally shown at galleries and museums – they are, in fact, independent works of art, since they are never produced on more than ten prints – and although autonomous, they are often juxtaposed to an exhibition of her paintings.”“In Locarno it is only fi lms, only, spearheaded by her latest, Rio. Morris is very interested in the Olympics, she has already portrayed Munich (in 1972) and Beijing, and we are ready for the host of the 2016 games, while the rest of the world is watching London,” Obrist concluded.(Jørn Rossing Jensen)
“I have always been interested in building bridges between cinema and art, so when Locarno Festival Director Olivier Père suggested to include fi lms by contemporary artists in the programme, I was immediately with him,” said Hans Ulrich Obrist, Swiss-born art historian, curator and critic, and co-director of London’s Serpentine Gallery (currently presenting an exhibiton of Yoko Ono). This year also a member of the jury for the Concorso internazionale, Obrist has organised the Omaggio a Sarah Morris, the UK-born American artist and director, following up on the presentations of Algerian artist and fi lmmaker Philippe Parreno (2010) and Albanian video artist Anri Sala (2011).“I have known Morris for more than 15 years, and while some artists makes an occasional fi lms, as a one-off event, she has a whole body of work from she started in 1998, besides her astonishing abstract paintings. She has always a fi lm in the making,” Obrist explained.

The fascinating past of Monte Verità is indissolubly bound with the lives of the men who lived or worked near this mount 350 metres high, making its story legendary. The art historian Harald Szeemann was defi nitely one of them and will be protagonist of the evening entitled “Harald Szeemann and Monte Verità”. And what better scenario to screen the movie than Monte Verità itself? The appointment is scheduled for Thursday (August 9). At 7.30 pm the audience will be able to listen to the lecture about the history of Monte Verità by the historian Dr. Andreas Schwab.

The composer Nicola Piovani claimed that the best soundtrack is the one that accompanies the fi lm without trying to get the upper hand. If the audience does not pay enough attention, consequently, could not perceive the crucial importance of the bandle of notes which enshrouds the frames.Thankfully, to underline this aspect, every year FONDATION SUISA awards the best soundtrack in a Swiss movie with the Film Music Award. This year the prize goes to Michael Sauter, 36-years-old composer from Biel, that follows the messy night lived by the main characters of Mary & Johnny with electronic beats and hip hop resonances – Samuel Schwarz’s work was presented at the Festival in the Appellations Suisse section. Chosen between 23 candidates by the jury chaired by Marco Blaser, Sauter won the prize (carrying a value of 15000 CHF) to have “combined the coolness and inner confl ict of the young generation with today’s music”. The jury defi ned his soundtrack as a “courageous, well-made and straight work” which represents the crowning achievement of a career that from
