AFFIDAVIT
I, the undersigned,
V A n Q M■FANANA- MZWEU ZULU
do hereby make oath and say: -
1. I was born on the 22nd of December 1942 in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal and
currently resides at
2. I left KwaZulu-Natal for the Vaal Triangle in 1974 and after moving between
different hostels over a period of four years, eventually settled at 726 Bafokeng
Street, Boipatong in 1978.
3. I became an active member of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in 1988 and was
well-known throughout the Boipatong township for my involvement in the IFP.
4. 4.1 After the unbanning of the African National Congress (ANC) tensions
between it and the IFP began to rise in the Vaal Triangle during 1990.
4.2 During April or May 1990 several homes of IFP members were attacked
in Evaton township and ANC members such a Jeffrey Ndamase wrongly
warned the residents of the Vaal Triangle of a pending attack by the IFP.
5.1 The tension reached boiling point during July 1990 when IFP supporters
were attacked during and after a rally at Zone 7, Sebokeng.
5.2 Many of the rally-goers were attacked as they boarded a bus at the
JV Sebokeng Hotel. Petrol bombs and shots were fired at us and in thei
process a white policeman was shot dead.
5.3 We were outgunned but retaliated with sticks and spears. The fighting
continued for approximately eight hours.
As a result of the fighting the residents of Sebokeng Hostel barred the IFP
supporters who reside at the Hostel from returning to their rooms. This left many
! people destitute.
It was at this time that my house in Boipatong was visited by the comrades
on three consecutive days. At one such a visit they entered my house and
unsuccessfully searched for weapons.
- 3 -
8. A day after their last visit I took my wife and children to Kwa Madala Hostel
as a precaution against any impending attack. Upon my return to Boipatong IIcould see my house burning from a distance.
9. Over the course of the next few weeks myself, together with the other
destitute IFP members had no permanent place to stay and were forced to
move from one place to another due to the constant attacks by the comrades.
10. 10.1 Things eventually came to a head when a stand-off occurred between
the ANC, IFP and the South African Police at Sebokeng Hostel at the end
of July 1990.
10.2 Although I was at work at the time of the incident, I was informed later that
a gunfight had broken out between the SAP and the ANC at the hostel.
10.3 All of the IFP members inside the hostel were subsequently arrested
and upon their release an increase into the number of people without
homes occurred.
11 11.1 Because a large contingent of Iscor workers was among us, we knew of
the Kwa Madala Hostel and that it stood empty.
11.2 During October 1990 we broke the locks of the main gate and moved in.
11.3 The day after we moved in, myself with a few other Iscor workers went
to the Iscor management and informed them of our actions.
12. Despite our move to Kwa Madala Hostel, we were still subjected to continuous
attacks from the comrades and hostel residents were frequently abducted
whilst shopping and eventually necklaced in one of the Vaal townships.
13. We had no structure inside the hostel which acted as a self-protection unit.
14. 14.1 The hostel residents regularly held meetings to discuss their plight.
14.2 I was employed by Iscor and due to my shifts could not attend all of the
meetings. I therefor only learnt of certain decisions after the community
had taken them during the meeting.
14.3 Bhenkinkosi Mkhize used to inform me of the decisions taken.
15. The residents had revenge on their minds consistently and I had to calm
them on numerous occasions telling them that a peaceful future could only
- 4 -
- 5 -
be negotiated and that attacks and counter attacks were futile. I had on a
consistent basis persisted in my belief of negotiations.
16. I left Kwa Madala Hostel on the 5th of June 1992 for my home in Nongoma,
KwaZulu-Natal.
17. I am not quite sure when I returned to the Kwa Madala Hostel, but know that it
was either on the 21st or 22nd of June 1992.
18. Upon my arrival I saw a large contingent of policemen and asked the residents
what had happened. I was told that they were the suspects in the Boipatong
massacre. They however denied any involvement.
19. 19.1 Approximately a week before the annual general conference of the IFP
in Ulundi a young boy by the name of Andries Nosenga arrived at
the hostel.
19.2 Nosenga made statements to us to the effect that he was an ANC
spy and that he had to infiltrate the hostel in order for him to plant a
bomb there.
I
- 6 -
19.3 His instructor was Mr Mbatha, who was at the time a leader of the ANC
in the Vaal.
20. Seeing that the IFP’s annual general conference took place during the
weekend of 18 and 19 July 1992 I deemed it the ideal opportunity to expose an
ANC spy in front of the IFP leadership.
21. Mr Nosenga voluntarily accompanied me to Ulundi by taxi with others from
the Kwa Madala Hostel.
22. 22.1 Mr Nosenga was paraded on stage to the conference goers onI
Sunday, 19 July 1992.
22.2 He admitted in the presence of Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi and other
senior IFP leaders that he was an ANC spy and I personally asked him
whether he now belonged to the IFP or the ANC, seeing that no harm
would come to him after his admissions. He answered that he was now
an IFP member.
23. Nosenga travelled with me back to Kwa Madala Hostel and stayed there for
another two to three weeks after which time he disappeared. I later heard
that he was arrested.
D E P O N E N T
THUS SIGNED AND SWORN TO AT VANDERBIJLPARK ON THIS J-)fU DAY OF
JULY 1999, THE DEPONENT HAVING ACKNOWLEDGED THAT HE/SHE KNOWS
AND UNDERSTANDS THE CONTENTS OF THIS AFFIDAVIT, THAT IT IS BOTH
TRUE AND CORRECT TO THE BEST OF HIS/HER KNOWLEDGE AND BELIEF,
THAT HE/SHE HAS NO OBJECTION TO TAKING THE PRESCRIBED OATH AND
THAT THE PRESCRIBED OATH WILL BE BINDING ON HIS/HER CONSCIENCE.
