Untilnow,Brewtargethasbeenlyingtoyou.Underneaththetargetbatchsizeonthemainwindow,itsaysyourcalculatedbatchsizeandthecalculatedboilsizearenot0.Theseareestimatesbasedonyourequipmentprofile.Brewtargetislyingbecauseit’sconvenientjusttobeabletostartaddingtheingredientsandgetanapproximateanswer.Aftersettingthemashadditionvolumes,youwillgetarealanswer.

SwitchtotheMashtabinthemainwindow.Clickon"EditMash"andgiveitaname.Youcanentertheinitialgraintemp,spargetempandinitialtuntemphere.Enteringtheseasaccuratelyaspossiblewillgiveyouthebestchancetonailyourtemperatures.Tosettunmassandspecificheat,youshouldclick"FromEquipment".

Themashdesignerisformoreadvanceduse.Itcanbeusedtocreateanymashscheduleyoudesirewithhowevermanysparges,andatwhateverinfusiontemporvolumeyoudesire.Tostartit,justclickthe"MashDes"button.Adialogwillaskyouforthetemperatureofthetunbeforethefirstinfusion,soenter70Fandcontinue.

Nowthatyourrecipeisallplanned,wouldn’titbegoodtohavesomeinstructionsonyourbrewday?Clickthe"Brewday"tabatthetopofthemainwindow.Click"GenerateInstructions".Ithasmadeallinstructionsforyouandlistedthemontheleftinorder.Youcanremove,shiftup/down,insert,changestepsasyouseefittohelpyoubeorganizedonyourbrewday.

Thereare3timerstohelpyouwithtime-criticalstepsifyouclicktheclockbuttoninthetoolbarofthemainwindow.TheyareinHH:MM:SSformat,andthetextboxaboveeachoneiswhatyouusetosetit.Justenter"1:00:00"andpress"set"tosetthetimerfor1hour,forexample.The"Sound"buttonallowsyoutoselectasoundthatwillbeplayedwhenthetimerreacheszero.Brewtargethasprovidedmanydefaultsoundstochoosefrom,oryoucanselectanyothersoundfileonyourcomputer.

PrintingtheRecipe

Printandprintpreviewareavailableunderthe"File"menu.Therearetwoprintoutsavailable.Oneis"Recipe"andtheotheris"Brewday".Therecipeprintoutisalltheinforelatedtotherecipeyouhavemade.Thebrewdayprintoutisformattedinorganizedspecificallyforfollowingwhenyoubrew.

WhenyoucloseBrewtarget,youwillbegivenanoptiontoeithersaveordiscardyourwork.

Chapter2:GeneralConceptsBrewtargetmaintainsadatabaseofrecipes,ingredients,etc.Ifbrewtargetshouldcrashunexpectedly,youwillbepromptedtoeitherrestorethechangesmadelastsessionorrollbackthedatabasetodiscardthechangesinthelastsession.

Inventory

Brewtargetcankeeptrackofhowmuchofeachbrewingingredientyouhaveavailable.Themechanismisstraight-forward.Openuptheitemyouwanttorecordyourinventory,say"Briess2RowBrewersMalt".Towardsthebottomofthelefthandside,entertheamountyouhaveininventory.Onanyrecipeyouhaveusedthismalt,youcannowseewhatyouhaveininventory.

Everytimeyouusethe"BrewIt!"functionality,theamountininventoryisreducedbytheamounttherecipeuses.Besomewhatcareful;brewtargetdoesnotwarnyouifarecipecallsfor2kgofcrystal80,butonly1kgisavailableintheinventory.

Trees

Atreeisahierarchicalviewofingredients,recipes,andotheritems.

Theapplicationwindowissplitintothreemajorpanes:thetrees,therecipeandtheingredients.Thetreepaneisasetoftabsthatdisplaysyourrecipes,equipmentprofiles,fermentables,hops,miscellaneousitemsandhops.Youcansortanyofthetreesonthedisplayedfields.

Doubleclickingonanyiteminthetreewillopenuptheappropriateeditorforthatitem.Doubleclickingarecipewillopentherecipeinthemainwindow.

Thereare6tabs:

Recipes-thistreeshowsallyourrecipes.Youcandraganddroptherecipeontothemainwindowandthatrecipewillbeloaded.Eachrecipewillalsoshowanyassociatedbrewnotes.

Equipment-thisshowsallyourdefinedkit.Youcandraganddropapieceofequipmentontoyourrecipewhichwillhavethesameeffectaschangingtheequipmentviathedropdownbox.

Fermentables,Hops,MiscandYeast-theseshowallofyouringredients.Dragginganitemontothemainwindowwilladdthatitemtotherecipe.

Youcandroprecipes,stylesandequipmentprofilesontotherecipepane;youcandropfermentables,hops,miscellaneousandyeastontotheingredientspane.

Youcanright-clickalmostanywhereonatreeandgetamenuofoptions.Themenuallowsyoutocreateanewitemorafolder.Theitemyoucancreatedependsonthetreeyouclickedin.Ifyouright-clickedinthemiscellaneoustree,forexample,youcancreateamiscellaneousitem.Otherwise,themenusareidenticalforeachtree.

Youcanselectmultipleitems,right-clickandthenperformanactionontheentireselectedlist.Theonlyexceptionisthe"Export"function.LimitationsintheBeerXMLformatdonotallowrecipesandingredientstobeexportedatthesametime.

Folders

Itemsintreescanbeorganizedintofolders.

Thefolderseparatoris"/".Youcancreatemanysubfolders,like"/IPA/BYO/2012/Sept",aslongasyouuseforwardslashes(/)toseparatethem.

Emptyfolders,orfoldersthatcontainonlymoreemptyfolders,willberemovedafterrestart.Ifyouwantafoldertobepreserved,makesuretoputatleastoneiteminthefolder.

Deletingafolderdeletesitscontentstoo.Youwillonlybepromptedtodeletethefolder,noteachiteminthefolder.

Becarefulwhendroppingafolder.Thereisaspacebetweenitemsthatisnotavaliddroptarget.Nothingwillhappenifyoudropitthere,whichwillcanbefrustrating.

BrewNotes

Ifyouright-clickarecipe,youcanselectanactioncalled"BrewIt".Ifyouselectthisaction,anewentrywillbecreatedbelowtherecipeandanewtabwillbeopenedinthemainwindow.Thisnewtaballowsyoutorecordimportantinformationaboutyourbeerduringbrewing(sg,volumes,temperatures,etc.).Thisallowsyoutotrackperformanceovertimeandadjustequipmentandefficienciestobetterpredictwhatyoubrew.

Thevaluesarepreloadedbasedontherecipeaswritten.Asyoumovethroughyourbrewday,youcanrecordtheactualnumbers.Thecalculatedvaluesinthemiddleofthescreenwillchangebasedonthoseinputs.Forexample,ifyouexpectedanSGof1.036butonlygot1.032theprojectedOG,ABVandABVwillallchangetoreflectthelowerSG.

Method2:DragandDrop

Thisisasimplermethod,aslongasyoudon’tmindthedefaultsorting

1. Opentheappropriatetreeintheleftpane.

2. Clickontheitemyouwishtoadd.

3. Dragittotheingredientspaneonthemainwindow,anddropit

4. Thetabswillchangeifrequired.E.g.,ifyoudropahopontothe"Fermentables"tab,thefocuswillchangetothe"Hops"tab.

ImportingRecipes

YoucanimportotherBeerXMLrecipes(suchasfromBeersmith)byusingFile->ImportRecipes.However,beawarethatBeersmithandothersoftwaredonotstrictlyadheretoBeerXMLorXMLstandardsingeneral,soyoumayhavesometroubleimportingrecipesfromtimetotime.Brewtargettriestomaintainstrictcompatabilitywiththestandards.

ExportingRecipes

ThisoptionwillexportselectedrecipestoBeerXML.

DatabaseBackupandRestore

Formanyreasons,youmaywanttobackupallyourrecipes,ingredients,andeverythingelse.Todothis,gotoFile->"BackupDatabase"andselectanemptydirectory.Restoringthedatabaseisjustassimple.

Important whenyourestoreadatabase,everythinginyourcurrentdatabasewillbereplaced.

Important Restoringadatabasewillcausebrewtargettoautomaticallyrestart.

SharingRecipes

Brewtargetofferstwodifferentmethodsforpostingyourrecipesinsimplereadableformats.

Method1:RecipetoClipboard

Thistoolmakesatextversionoftherecipesothatyoumaypostitonlineorprettymuchanywhereelse.Toexportatextversion,Tools->"RecipetoClipboardasText",thenclickpastewhereyouwanttherecipetexttobepasted.

Method2:RecipetoHTML

AnotherwayyoucanshareyourecipesistoexportthemtoHTML,whichisviewableinanywebbrowser.UseFile->"Recipe"->"SavetoHTML".Youcanexporteithertherecipeorthebrewdayinstructions.

ControllingDefaultUnitandScale

Youcancontrolwhatunitsareusedinthedisplayandhowtheyscale.Inanyfieldwhereitmakessense(volumes,weights,temperaturesandgravities),youcanright-clicktheassociatedlabelandbepresentedwiththeunitandscalemenu.Selectingoneofthoseoptionswillcausethatfieldtobedisplayedintheselectedunit.Soyoucan,forexample,displayBoilSGandOGinPlato,butFGinspecificgravity.

Youcanalsoselectthescaleforanyvolumeorweightfield.Youcanusethisto,forexample,causeyourtargetbatchsizetobedisplayedinquartsinsteadofgallons.Youcandothesamethinginanyoftheingredienttabsbyrightclickingonthecolumnheader.Thiswillallowyoutodisplayyourhopsingrams,butkeepyourfermentablesdisplayedinpounds.
