XVIII Polish Puzzle Championship

The Finals of XVIII Polish Puzzle Championship will take place at Pałac Domaniowski on 13.04.2014. This year, apart from Polish competitors, also international Polish solvers are invited to take part in this wonderful event. There will be two rankings; one for Polish competitors only, to find XVIII Polish Puzzle Champion, second one for all the competitors, to find XVIII International Polish Puzzle Champion. For every round, a competitor can score bonus if he/she finishes the round before time and all submitted solutions are correct. After the rounds, 4 best competitors of International Ranking will advance to the playoff. However, there has to be at least two Polish competitors in the playoff. Thus, if eg. places 1., 2. and 3. are occupied by International competitiors, only competitors 1. and 2. (+ two best Polish competitors) advance to the playoff. Playoff will have similar form to the one from two last WSC&WPC. Puzzles will be solved on flipcharts in front of the audience. At first, there will be two semi-finals (1. vs 4., 2. vs 3.), in which solvers will compete until one gets two “wins”. Then, winners of semi-finals will compete in a Final, again up to two “wins”.Additionally, for Polish competitors only, there will be a prize for the best Junior (<18 yrs), for the best Senior (>40 yrs) and for the best woman-competitor.

1. Skyscrapers (45 pkt)The object is to place a skyscraper in each square, with a height between 1 and N, so that no two skyscrapers in a row or column have the same number of floors. In addition, the number of visible skyscrapers, as viewed from the direction of each clue, is equal to the value of the clue. Note that higher skyscrapers block the view of lower skyscrapers located behind them.

2. Battleships (60 pkt)Locate the indicated fleet in the grid. Each segment of a ship occupies a single cell. Ships can be rotated. Ships do not touch each other, even diagonally. Some ship segments, or sea cells without any ship segments, are given in the grid. The numbers on the right and bottom edges of the grid reveal the number of ship segments in that row or column.

3. Calcudoku (70 pkt)Puzzle consists of a grid containing blocks surrounded by bold lines. The object is to fill all empty squares so that the numbers 1 to N (where N is the number of rows or columns in the grid) appear exactly once in each row and column and the numbers in each block produce the result shown in the top-left corner of the block according to the math operation appearing on the top of the grid. In CalcuDoku a number may be used more than once in the same block.

4. Slitherlink (75 pkt)Draw a single, non-intersecting loop that only consists of horizontal and vertical segments between the dots. Numbers inside a cell indicate how many of the edges of that cell are part of the loop.

5. Hashi (90 pkt)Puzzle is based on a rectangular arrangement of islands where the number in each island tells how many bridges are connected to it. The object is to connect all islands according to the number of bridges so there are no more than two bridges connecting a pair of islands. Bridges can only be vertical or horizontal and are not allowed to cross islands or other bridges. When completed, all bridges are interconnected enabling passage from any island to another.

6. Tic-Tac-Logic (100 pkt)Each puzzle consists of a grid containing X's and O's in various places. The object is to place X or O in remaining squares sothere are no more than two consecutive X's or O's in a row or a column. The number of X's is the same as the number of O’s in each row and column. All rows and all columns are unique.

1. Heteromino (20 + 20 pkt)Divide the white squares into polyominoes of size 3 such that no two identical polyominoes that are also identically oriented are orthogonally adjacent.

2. Nanro (20 + 25 pkt)Place numbers into some of the cells so that no 2x2 area is completely covered by numbers. All numbers in a region must equal to the number of numbers in that region. If two edge-adjacent cells are in different regions, they cannot contain the same number. Finally, the set of all cells containing numbers must occupy a single connected area.

3. Battleships (35 + 30 pkt)Locate the indicated fleet in the grid.

4. Kakuro (30 pkt)Puzzle consists of a blank grid with sum-clues in various places. The object is to fill all empty squares using numbers 1 to 9 so the sum of each horizontal block equals the clue on its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the clue on its top. In addition, no number may be used in the same block more than once.

5. Akari (20 + 45 pkt)Place a lightbulb in some cells so that all cells in the grid are illuminated. Lightbulbs can give light in straight lines orthogonally until the rays meet a black cell or the edge of the grid. Lightbulbs should not illuminate each other. A digit in a cell indicates the number of the lighbulbs that are adjacent to that cell.

6. Tapa (20 + 45 pkt)Paint some squares black to create a continuous wall. Number(s) in a square indicate the length of black cell blocks on its neighbouring cells. If there is more than one number in a square, there must be at least one white cell between the black cell blocks. Painted cells cannot form a 2×2 square or larger. There are no wall segments on cells containing numbers.

7. Checkered Fillomino (80 + 75 pkt)Divide the grid into different regions along the gridlines. No two regions of the same size can touch each other by a side. Numbers in the grid indicate that this cell is part of a region of that size. A region can contain more than one given number. There can be regions without any given numbers. Additionally, shade some regions, such that no two shaded or unshaded regions share an edge.

8. Cave (25 + 100 pkt)Draw a closed loop over the grid lines. The loop goes around all numbers. The numbers in the grid indicate how many cells inside the loop can be seen horizontally and vertically from that cell, including the cell itself.

9. Turning Fences (30 + 100 pkt)Draw a single closed loop by connecting dots horizontally and vertically. The numbers in the grid indicate the amount of turns taken on the four dots around it.

10. Snake (95 pkt)Locate a snake in the grid, whose head and tail are given, without touching itself even at a point. Numbers outside the grid indicate the number of snake segments seen in the corresponding direction.

11. Kurotto (100 + 85 pkt)Shade some cells to form regions. The number in a circle gives the sum of the number of cells covered by the regions that are connected to it orthogonally. Regions may touch each other only diagonally. Cells with circles cannot be shaded andempty circles may have any number of shaded regions connected to them.

1. Anglers (15 + 35 pkt)Draw a line from each Fisherman (number) to a fish by moving horizontally and vertically form cell to cell. Each fish is caught by one fisherman. The numbers indicate the length of the line of the fisherman. Each cell cannot be occupied bymore than one line.

2. Castle Wall (25 + 50 pkt)Draw a single closed loop through the grid by connecting the centres of cells. The loop can't go through any cells with a bold black border. If such a cell is coloured black, it will be outside the loop; if such a cell is coloured white, it will be inside the loop. Some cells will have numbers and arrows. A number with a horizontal arrow indicates the total length of horizontal line segments in the direction of the arrow. A number with a vertical arrow indicates the total length of vertical line segments in the direction of the arrow.

3. Compass (35 + 50 pkt)Colour some squares so that all remaining white squares form a single contiguous polyomino. Black squares can't touch each other by a side. There can't be any 2x2 area of white cells anywhere. Squares with arrows or stars can't be coloured. Arrows indicate that this direction is the only way you can travel to the star over the white cells without backtracking.

5. Star Battle (20 + 60 pkt)Place 2 (1 in the example) stars in every row, column and black bordered area. The stars can't touch eachother, not even diagonally.

6. Tapa (35 + 60 pkt)Paint some squares black to create a continuous wall. Number(s) in a square indicate the length of black cell blocks on its neighbouring cells. If there is more than one number in a square, there must be at least one white cell between the black cell blocks. Painted cells cannot form a 2×2 square or larger. There are no wall segments on cells containing numbers.

7. Pentopia (25 + 60 pkt)Place pentominos in the grid without repeating any shape. Rotations and reflections are considered the same shape. The pentominos are not allowed to touch, not even at the corners. The lines in the grid indicate the direction(s) in which the pentominos is/are closest when looking from that square.

8. Araf (45 + 100 pkt)Divide the grid into some regions, formed of adjacent squares. Each region should contain exactly two given numbers. The size of each region should be a value (in unit square) between the two numbers inside that region.

CalcudokuPuzzle consists of a grid containing blocks surrounded by bold lines. The object is to fill all empty squares so thatthe numbers 1 to N (where N is the number of rows or columns in the grid) appear exactly once in each row and columnand the numbers in each block produce the result shown in the top-left corner of the block according to the mathoperation appearing on the top of the grid. In CalcuDoku a number may be used more than once in the same block.

BattleshipsLocate the indicated fleet in the grid. Each segment of a ship occupies a single cell. Ships can be rotated. Ships do not toucheach other, even diagonally. Some ship segments, or sea cells without any ship segments, are given in the grid. The numbers on the right and bottom edges of the grid reveal the number of ship segments in that row or column.

KakuroPuzzle consists of a blank grid with sum-clues in various places. The object is to fill all empty squares using numbers 1 to 9so the sum of each horizontal block equals the clue on its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the clueon its top. In addition, no number may be used in the same block more than once.

SkyscrapersThe object is to place a skyscraper in each square, with a height between 1 and N, so that no two skyscrapers in a row orcolumn have the same number of floors. In addition, the number of visible skyscrapers, as viewed from the directionof each clue, is equal to the value of the clue. Note that higher skyscrapers block the view of lower skyscrapers locatedbehind them.

SlitherlinkDraw a single, non-intersecting loop that only consists of horizontal and vertical segments between the dots.Numbers inside a cell indicate how many of the edges of that cell are part of the loop.

HitoriPuzzle consists of a square grid with numbers appearing in all squares. The object is to shade squares so no number appears in a row or column more than once. Shaded (black) squares do not touch each other vertically or horizontally. When completed, all un-shaded (white) squares create a single continuous area.

NurikabeDetermine for each cell if it's part of the stream or an island. Each number is part of a single island of horizontally and vertically connected cells, which size is equal to that number. Islands can't touch eachother horizontally or vertically. The cells not part of an island form the stream. The stream is a single connected area, which doesn't cover any 2x2 areas anywhere.

SnakeLocate a snake in the grid, whose head and tail are given, without touching itself even at a point. Numbers outside the grid indicate the number of snake segments seen in the corresponding direction.

Tic-Tac-LogicEach puzzle consists of a grid containing X's and O's in various places. The object is to place X or O in remaining squares sothere are no more than two consecutive X's or O's in a row or a column. The number of X's is the same as the numberof O’s in each row and column. All rows and all columns are unique.
