Flamenco

Carnival FEATURING

PEDRO De LINARES Flamenco music is the most stirring, brilliant, multi-colored—and most demanding upon the artist—of all the

folk arts in the world. | | And Pedro de Linares is a superbly thrilling practitioner of it. Here is an artist celebrating his native land, his heritage, his home, in an art form nourished by a people

of taut and springing emotions. Here is the fiery color of Spain as celebrated by its own fiery and colorful people. | |

Here are the strangely powerful melodies which take their shapes from the oddly simple pattern of descend- ing chords which accompany them. Here are the excited fingers of an artist so demanding of his guitar, that he frets out the furious melodies with the fingers of his left hand along the neck, often not even strumming the strings with his right because the strumming fingers can’t keep up. This fantastic technique, called “ham- mering” is the eminent domain only of the Flamencans, envied but unequalled by other guitar players the world over.

And only the Flamencans sing their strange expressions in the sensitively taut voice which makes of it, too, an anguished, delicate instrument. : |

Here is the music of a unique people. And of the few among them able to produce it in the full color of its fire, Pedro de Linares surely is among the flaming and unforgettable examples.

FOR YOUR LISTENING PLEASURE

Note the continual intensity of the performer, Pedro de Linares, both vocally and especially instrumentally thru his guitar. His facile fingering and plucking of the solo instrument often give the impression that multiple dubbing was utilized to gain this full effect, but in no instance hereon, has any such artificiality been utilized. This is a great performance in its natural, realistic best fidelity!

This MERCURY LONG PLAYING 3313 r.p.m. recording was made possible through the use of the MERCURY SOUND MARGIN CONTROL process—a technique whereby it has become possible for Mercury to produce for the record-buying public a disc of truly superior quality, especially with respect to brilliance, clarity, dynamic range and reliable stylus tracking. This record can be played on any 3313 r.p.m. turntable.

CUSTOM HIGH

FIDELITY

HI Finformation

This recording, made in Barcelona, Spain, presented a problem, for it features throughout a solo performer, who, in some of the songs, does the Spanish lyric, accompanied by his own guitar, while other bands. feature only the very emotional guitar. To sensitively capture his impas- sioned words, the engineer finally suspended an RCA 44BX microphone about three feet from his mouth, while an RCA 77DX microphone was suspended at his waist height to capture fully the exciting guitar. The entire session was recorded on an Ampex Tape Recorder 300 run- ning at 15 ips (inches per second). Douglas Hawkins of Mercury Sound Engineering, New York, mastered the tape, using a Scully auto-

matically variable pitch lathe. (RIAA)
