PREFACE

The Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin is the organizer of geographical expeditions to Spitsbergen and to the Russian Arctic. Scientific programming is realised in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Trondheim, the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and with the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute.

It has already become a tradition that polar session are organised each year, during which the latest results are presented by different groups of specialists engaged in polar studies.

The aim of the session which took place on the 4-5'h of December 1995, was the presentation of research on the natural environment of the Arctic (Spitsbergen, the Kara Sea, Novaya Zemlya, the Kola Peninsula) as well as on the territories lying within reach of the Pleistocene periglacial sphere (Poland, Ukraine).

The reports and communiques prepared in the form of articles reflect a wide range of research topics, they involve: archaeology, history, Earth sciences and ecology.
