Freud examines many ways in which the uncannycan be interpreted and begins with the basicunderstanding of the word uncanny. He believesthat the uncanny is not just a form of fear such as a

fear of death but is something much deeper than this. There is no doubt that this belongs to the realm ofthe frightening, of what evokes fear and dread. It isequally beyond doubt that the word is not alwaysused in a clearly definable sense Freud goes on tostate that the sense of the uncanny derives fromsomething which is asserted much deeper within thehuman mind, the feeling that something just isnt

quite right. The uncanny is the species of thefrightening that goes back to what was once wellknown and had long been familiar. Freud believesthat primeval fears may be one of the sources of theuncanny such as basic childhood fears of the dark, even though we grow to overcome these fears, ifthere are emphasised to a certain degree we wouldbe sure to have that sense of uncertainty once again

...the 'uncanny' elements we know from experiencearises either when repressed childhood complexes arerevived by some impression, or when primitivebeliefs that have been 'surmounted' appear to be onceagain confirmed. The basic fears of the past are everpresent and these play a great part in understandingthe uncanny, however it is a more generalised fearthat combines all of that which we do not understandthat is closest to understanding a sense of uncanny, the ever more apparent fear of the unknown.

Jon Beinart Jon Beinart is most known for

his Toddlerpede sculptures inwhich his takes the limbs of dollbabies and transforms them intobizarre and frighteningcreatures. His painting have adistinct eeriness about them ashe takes the human form,

something familiar, and mutatesit into something new andunnatural.

Jennifer Cronin Jennifer Cronin is a painter who uses oil paints on

various surfaces to create almost photo realistic

images that create strange settings in which acharacter is usually found. Her work mostly depictsfemale characters in a room of sorts whether it is akitchen or bathroom. This relate to the sense ofuncanny as these paintings are set in the home whichis supposed to be a secure setting, however in these

images some form of strange event is taking place.

Russ Mills Russ Mills is one of my favourite artists and his work

is very distinctive, he creates paintings and thendraws over them using pen to create a bold finish to

his work. The style of his paintings creates a strangesense of uneasiness as the image appears to be fadinginto smoke, as if the subject is deteriorating. I feelthat this fits well with the uncanny and this style maybe incorporated into my work in some form.

In this visual concept map I decided to use images which Ithought gave a sense of the uncanny or an eerie feel. Thelower 2 images are from the Film Silent Hill which for me isa film full of uncanny scenes. The desolate town definitelygives a chilling feel and does so in a simple yet effectiveway. The top 2 images are of empty or abandonedshopping malls which is what I am wanting to create formy digital set. My other idea is to create a digital set which

is based in a school and I think the image on the rightworks very well with the ambient green lighting.

These are my Key thumbnails so far, they sum up the initialidea that I have of an abandoned shopping mall with an eerieand uncanny atmosphere. I decided to use the shopping mall as

it is a place which mist of us are familiar and take for granted, and in Freuds view of the uncanny a place like this shouldwork well to create a uncanny digital set. I wanted to add inmanikins as I feel that they give the sense of a presence in theroom even though they an in-animate objects, again inFreudian terms this should work well. Using lighting I intend

to use the manikins to cast shadows across the set to unsettlethe image and create a uncanny atmosphere.
