C o m m u n i c a t i o n ( f r o m t h e L a t i n

‘communicare’, meaning “to share”) is the activ‐

ity of conveying information through the ex‐

change of thoughts, messages or information

through speech, visuals, signals, writing or be‐

haviour. Communication to me is something

important as I oen #nd it difficult to express

my ideas in writing and to communicate my

understanding clearly. I wanted to #gure out in

this project if I could change my own concept

of communication as the exchange of informa‐

tion between two or more people.

broidery, London College of Fashion

My intention with my 'Chance' project was to

remove myself from the decision making

progress when creating my work. I le some of

my decisions - which colors and brush types I

would use – to chance through controlled ex‐

periments. I based some of my ideas on the

work of John Cage, notably River Rocks and

Smoke (1990) and 10 Stones (1989) wherein

Cage used his ‘familiar chance options’ to deter‐

mine both the colour and the choice of materi‐

als within the work.

Progression: UALab Foundation course in Art

and Design, Leyton Sixth Form College

My project was initially inspired by the work of

David orpe with his paintings of buildings at

night. I developed my ideas by watching several

movies to explore scenes that I have found in‐

spiring and visually interesting. I have attempt‐

ed to use the possibilities of the cinematic im‐

age to capture speci#c atmospheric conditions.

Colour/Line (dimensions variable, pen, paper)

Progression: BA (Hons) Spatial Design, Lon‐

don College of Communication

My project was about experimenting with

colour, line and shape, things that make up our

everyday experience through the sense of sight.

I wanted to explore, how a single colour can

change our emotions, feelings and behavior

through its interaction with other colours: how

can certain colours or patterns transform our

spatial perception?

Femininity (dimensions variable, photocopies,

nail polish on acrylic, false nails)

Progression: BA (Hons) Sculpture, Camber‐

well College of Arts

My project theme aimed to explore the qualities

and characteristics that revolve around the fe‐

male form. I aimed to address how femininity

has oen been imagined as oppressive be‐

haviour through the buying and wearing make‐

up, nail polish and shoes. For me the act of buy‐

ing womanly things is quite obsessive and the

objects purchased can form a collection. Al‐

though I aim to reinforce feminism, this has

not consumed my project and I aimed to em‐

brace femininity by using a range of female gar‐

ments and utilities to show muliebrity and

womanliness within the sculpture and imagery.

Within my series of posters I begin to touch

upon gender politics and other social issues.

Room (dimensions variable, string, nails, ob‐

jects)

Progression: BA (Hons) Spatial Design, Lon‐

don College of Communication

For the past 14 years I have lived in a con#ned

space sharing a room with my brother. e only

privacy I have in this situation is when I open

my wardrobe door, creating a space within a

room in an attempt to create my own territory

through division. I feel that on a subconscious

level, lack of my own personal space has fuelled

my interest in interiors. I am interested in ex‐

ploring the differences between permanent and

temporary space and issues such as privacy vs.

public and function vs. aesthetics.

In what sense are we a product of our environ‐

ment? How is our life predetermined by where

we grew up? Are we ever free from in'uence?

Distortion (dimensions variable, digital photo‐

graph)

Progression: BA (Hons) Fashion Photography,

London College of Fashion

I want to think about what ideas or aspects of

contemporary life are distorted. For example,

does the media only reveal what they want you

to see, distorting peoples views from the actual

truth? Is photography an accurate record of re‐

ality?

Uta Barth’s photography focuses on how he sees

reality and how a camera records it, instead of

focusing on the technicality of what the image

actually consists of. is interested me greatly,

the way in which things happen without any

obvious plan or cause, to do something by acci‐

dent or to do something even though it is risky.

is project starts by having my camera around

my neck to continuosly capture my existence.

Shopping (dimensions variable, photographs)

Progression: BA (Hons) Photography,

Kingston University

I am drawn to photography as I am interested

in the way the camera captures different aspects

of reality. Currently I am interested in exploring

a range of surfaces to explore ideas such as con‐

tained space, interiors, acts and historical

events that may have happened within these

spaces that they contain. Referencing past

painters, I have been inspired to take pho‐

tographs that parody their work: artists such as

Gerhard Richter, Robert Ryman, Mart Rothko,

Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still. Issues of

consumerism also excite me and I will explore

this through a range of images taken to record

peoples shopping habits and environments. I’m

interested in exploring people’s attachments to

materialistic values and possessions and won‐

der if progressive consumption of goods is eco‐

nomically bene#cial in the end.

Lost (dimensions variable, string, maps, paint,

screenprinting on paper, laser cut paper)

Progression: UALab Foundation Course in Art

and Design, Leyton Sixth Form College

rough utilising a combination of different

maps of London and Poland, layered amongst

drawn journeys and broken sentences, I wanted

to show a juxtaposition of those two countries:

how different they are, yet how they maintain

the same level of meaning to me. rough my

work I wanted to show my feeling of cultural

confusion and how I am in both places at the

same time.

e sound of the machine (dimensions variable,

mixed media on paper)

Progression: UALab Foundation course in Art

and Design, Leyton Sixth Form College

My project focused on the relevance of ma‐

chines and whether or not machines should get

as much credit as artists for the production of

artwork. I intended to have artwork that was

created by the use of machines and see whether

or not people appreciate it as much as the other

works of art in the exhibition. Halfway through

my project I began to incorporate sound with

my machine work to further extend my project,

as I thought that sound was a topic I could ex‐

plore more freely. e people that in'uenced

me theoretically were Karl Marx and his theory

on Capitalism and the proletariat, Walter Ben‐

jamin’s e work of art in age of mechanical re‐

production and ierry De Duve’s theory on

consumerism. I was also in'uenced, both visu‐

ally and conceptually, by artists such as DJ

Simpson, Zimoun, Bernhard Leitner and Jim

Lambie.

Line (dimensions variable, laser cut garments,

zips, mixed media on paper)

Progression: BA (Hons) Fashion Design Tech‐

nology: Womenswear, London College of

Fashion

Within this project I was interested in exploring

line with the intention to investigate its use: the

idea of a line being present as a divider or con‐

nection. My aim was to understand how line

can be used as support, supplying strength and

structural stability to three-dimensional form,

yet when the shape is changed or positioned in

a particular way it can deceive the eye through

creating a false impression: such as when line is

used to create an illusion of a contour on the

body, as found within the work of om

Browne, Comme des Garcons or Yohji Ya‐

mamoto. I also considered line in other con‐

texts. e organic use of line in terms of the

body; wrinkles on the palm, the pattern of the

human skin, hair follicles, and eye lashes. I also

wanted to look at invisible lines, such breaks

between words, or lines that indicate bound‐

aries, such as those found in parking spaces or

the work of Sol Le Witt.

Skin (dimensions variable, photographs)

Progression: UALab Foundation course in Art

and Design, Leyton Sixth Form College

What is skin? Is it a boundary, a protective

layer? A container? A barrier? My work aims to

address these concerns through exploring the

beauty of the damaged outer layer.

Sequence (dimensions variable, altered architec‐

tural plans, fabric samples, mixed media

collage)

Progression: BA (Hons) Surface Design for In‐

teriors, Swansea Metropolitan University

Sequence became important to me in this

project; I came to realize how important rou‐

tine and structures are in the way people go

about their lives. roughout this project I ex‐

plored the way sequence is used through rou‐

tine, order, lines and cycles which then led the

project eventually to my own sense of identity. I

explored myself, recognizing that I like to ar‐

range things in particular ways and to continu‐

ously have to put things in order: does this

make me OCD? e roots of this compulsion

are to be found at home – it is interesting to see

how my Mum and Dad live their lives through

their careers, my Mum trough studying to be a

tailor and my Dad’s career as a drasman. Ulti‐

mately my Mum was the main in'uence in this

project, as she is the most dominate amongst

my family when it comes to organization.
