STONE AGE TECHNOLOGY • Needle and thread% from '()*** years a!o
In districts where warm clothing is necessary, Stone Age peoplestitch skins together with threads of tendon or leather thongs. For each stitch they bore a hole and then hook the threadthrough it.
The development of a bone or ivory needle, with an eye, speeds up the process immeasurably. The hole is now createdby the same implement which then pulls the thread through, inan almost continuous movement. Several are so thin as toimply the use of materials such as horsehair for the thread.

STONE AGE TECHNOLOGY
• /a"in! ,re% more than '*)***years a!o
Almost without e&ception Stone Age tribes, surviving intomodern times, have evolved in isolation their own methods ofmaking 're. It is likely that the same was true when all
humanity lived in the Stone Age.
The most common way of making 're is by friction, using a 're drill.
Another more sophisticated techni(ue involves $intand pyrite. The useful (uality of the naturally occurring mineralpyrite, or iron pyrites, is that it makes a spark ifstruck with a $int. If the spark is aimed into drytinder, blowing can achieve a $ame.

STONE AGE TECHNOLOGY • 0arm SystemAdvances in tool)making technology led to advancesin agriculture. And farming revolutioni*ed the worldand set prehistoric humans on a course towardmodernity. Inventions such as the plow helped in the
planting of seeds. Their food supply became muchmore certain. +ermanent settlements were soon tofollow. Animals were raised for food as well as to dowork. oats, for instance, were sources of milk andmeat.
