1. TOWER OF ZYGMUNTINFO:Wiea Zygmunta, Katedra Krlewska na Wawelu Wawel, ul. Wawel 5, Site, MAPWhile visiting Wawel hill, do not forget to check cathedras Tower of Zygmunt. It may not be the highest tower, but inside it is a bell of historic and symbolic value for Poland. Called Zygmunt after its founder, King Zygmunt I Stary, the bell remained the biggest of its kind from 1520 until 1999. It tolls to celebrate the most important holidays and to mark historic moments, such as the election of Karol Wojtya as Pope John Paul II in 1978.

But there are more benefits from climbing this tower. The older the city, the narrower its streets. The taller historical buildings try to attract our attention and hide smaller buildings behind them. In Krakw, the Tower of Zygmunt is a good way to forget this problem, having a panoramic view of the Old Town. This way, in one building, one can be a part of hundreds of years of Polish history and at the same time put the Krakw experience in a whole new perspective.

2. The spirit of Young Poland preserved in glass

INFO:Pawilon Wyspiaski 2000 pl. Wszystkich witych 2, Link, Bazylika w. Franciszka z Asyu ul.Franciszkaska 2, FB, MAPFin de sicle this term perfectly reflects the atmosphere in Europe at the turn of the 20th century. This wind of change could be felt in politics, economy, but before others in arts. Polands response to this spirit led to the creation of the Young Poland movement, based in Krakw. One of its most famous representatives was StanisawWyspiaski, a true Renaissance man, engaged in a wide spectrum of activities from theatre, literature, to painting and devising of stained glass windows.

Though most of his works are kept in museums, the last category, stained glass masterpieces, retained their places in buildings, located next to Wszystkichwitych square. Wszystkichwitych square is located in Old Town south of Main Square, by the road leading to Kazimierz. In Bazylikaw, Franciszka and Wyspiaski Pavilion one can view the detailed, expressive and colourful works of the artist deemed to be one of the greatest artists in Polish history. His works, brave and fresh as when created, remain an inspiration and testimony of those unique times; times of change. Wszystkichwitych square is located in Old Town south of Main Square, by the road leading to Kazimierz.

Legend has it that in a cave under the Hill, a dragon used to live and terrorize the city. If it were not for a modest shepherd, who used a sulphur-stuffed sheep to poison the monster, the monster would have ruled in the city until today. To commemorate these events, a statue was created in 1972. Like every normal dragon in the world, Wawel dragon breaths fire every few minutes. To make him show some additional efforts, one can send a text message smok (dragon) to number 7168.

Having assumed power over the mythical beast, one can repeat it to cheer up gathered children or just have a view of the Vistula river and people relaxing on its banks. Since the bronze monster settled itself not so far from its old home, it can easily be found under the castles wlls, a walking distance from the Main Square.

4. Crowning up the adventure with zapiekankaINFO: Plac Nowy Plac Nowy, Kazimierz LinkMapThat Old Town isnt the only place to have a night out! Having gone to Kazimierz and checked out a range of different places and climates, from little dusty coffee shops to avan-garde, stylish pubs and clubs gathered around PlacNowy and in neighbouring streets, this lovely Jewish quarter has more to offer than historic sites. Now the time comes to finish this adventure (at least for this night). Does it mean that the next thing is to head straight to the hotel and sleep?

People from Krakw wouldnt agree with this! Its time for zapiekanka. The concept seems simple its basically bread, cheese and a variety of possible additions, but buying it in one of the stands located in the centre of PlacNowy, you encounter it in its finest form. It doesnt matter how hungry or how picky you are, PlacNowys zapiekanki never let anybody down. It shouldnt be a problem to find the place, the square itself is located conveniently close to Dietla street, marking the border between Old Town and Kazimierz. And do not forget, once the meal has been tried. the taste won't be forgotten , as I cant now.5. Krakw ghetto the last chapter of citys Jewish history

INFO: Podgrze district, KrakwLink, FB,MapPassing Jewish Kazimierz, crossing Vistula (for example by trams line 3, 9, 19, 24, 50, PlacBohaterwGetta station), and arriving in Podgrze district. Todays slowly fading, quiet neighbourhood, it witnessed one of the most horrible chapters of the World War II. Unlike Kazimierz, the place of great economic and cultural importance for Ashkenazi Jews, Podgrze was a theatre of Holocaust. In this small district, inhabited previously by 3000 people, Nazi Germans herded around 17,000 of Jews and established Krakw ghetto.

Due to methodical clearing of evidence, most of the sites, buildings and remainders didnt survive until today. However, its still possible to visit PlacBohaterwGetta (Square of Ghettos Heroes) and the museum next to it Apteka pod Orem, dedicated to those horrible times. Not so far away, on the Lwowska street, a look can be taken at one of the last remaining maceva-shaped pieces of ghetto wall. Finally, some of the ordinary buildings still remember the war. With imagination and compassion, while walking slowly through the peaceful streets full of memories, one can dedicate his thoughts to this tragedy.

6. Schindlers factory the proof that world isnt black-and-white

INFO: Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Krakowa. Fabryka Emalia Oskara Schindlera ul. Lipowa 4Link,FB, MapA visit to Schindlers factory, famous because of Spielbergs Schindlers List, seems like a good enrichment and summary to trips in search of Krakws Jewish history. It can easily be combined with sightseeing in Podgrze a former ghetto. Schindlers factory is located close to PlacBohaterwGetta tram stop, accessible by lines 3, 9, 19, 24 and 50.

Oscar Schindler, a NSDAP member, started to manage the factory in 1939. Instead of enduring the tragic situation of Jews in Krakw ghetto and waiting for Holocaust, he decided to act. Through unnecessarily huge demands for workers, he contrived to save 1100 Jews. The museum however isnt focused only on Schindlers achievements. Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, it aims to present a complex study of Krakws Jewish heritage.

7. A BREATH OF FRESH AIRINFO: Forum Przestrzenie ul. Marii Konopnickiej 28 Link,FB, MapAfter hours of classic sightseeing, filled with historical buildings, paintings and museums of all kinds, it is time to take a breath of fresh air. It is easy to take a bus (numbers: 144, 164, 169, 173, 179, 184) from Old Town to Ludwinw station. Visible from an old hotel building is our destination, Forum Przestrzenie.

In this extravagant space is intermixed a lot of sensations, creating an interesting chaos on the verge of artistic rebellion. Here students, workers, artists and tourists find a safe harbour from noble, posh atmospheres of aged metropolis. Fields covered with sun beds offer us pleasant retreat next to Vistula. Sitting next to the bar placed in the ground floor of an old hotel, one can mingle with todays local bohema. From time to time, surroundings and upper floors of the building turn into fields of cultural activities; exhibitions, concerts and fairs, devoted to bring new colours, ideas and sounds to the city of Krak. When it comes to pleasures for the palate, Forum Przestrzenie serves us a variety of drinks and delicious but not overpriced food. This has therefore endeared customers to the restaurant and gained it a special place in the heart of customers.

8. Enjoy the citys panorama from Krakw mounds

Though the exact number of such structures created throughout the citys history cannot be estimated , there are 5 well-known knolls, one of which doesnt exist anymore, thanks to communist rulers of Poland.

To have a taste of this experience and not waste too much time on travelling to the verges of Krakw, it will be good to choose one of two most famous mounds. KopiecKociuszki, located in the West and accessible by buses line 134, 152 and 292 from Bonia park (we get out at Sonecznikowa station). To KopiecKrakusa, we can get buses from the Old Town by tram lines 3, 6, 9, 13 and 24, getting out at PowstacwWielkopolskich station. Climbing the mounds, it is hard not to be impressed by the devotion and determination with which ordinary citizens lifted metre after metre of these monuments dedicated to historical and mythical heroes of Cracovian history. Then comes the time for a view; it is majestic and covers a large portion of Krakws panorama.

9. You will be surprised by this festival, and not in a way you think

INFO: Unsound Festival Krakw (unconfirmed localisation) LinkSurprises are loved, especially when travelling. Its not a matter of question but to what degree are we ready to confide our trust and time in the hands of a stranger? Lets get to know this October.

Its not like the people behind Unsound Festival are not known . Their successful merger of alternative music and visual arts gained them esteem and made them a mark in their own rights. Following was the unprecedented step in history of Polish festivals, namely the creation of its offsprings in New York, London, Adelaide and Toronto. Huge steps, huge responsibilities, but also great success, as all of them enjoyed continuity in the following years. What then is the trick? Its simple, ticket sales have started. However we dont know a single artist who will go on stage. So, how will it be? Are you ready to risk it?10. The art of eating good and not getting bankrupt 101

INFO: Pod Filarkami ul. Starowilna 29, MapThe communist past of Poland left permanent traces in its architecture and in the behaviour of the people. The influence of past regimes is also still visible in Polish gastronomy. It has bad sides - like impoverishment of national cuisine - but on the other hand, it left them with a country-wide chain of old fashioned canteens providing home-like meals in affordable prices.

The traditional name of such enterprises is bar mleczny (milk bar). Dont miss out of the pleasure of visiting it. Since the number of them has dwindled and their appearance isnt aimed at attracting tourists, be at alert while wandering around the Old Town. To get you out of the area encircled by Plantypark, a place like Pod Filarkami located at 29 Starowilna street can be proposed . For a few zlotys, a whole spectrum of Polish meals, starting from a choice of soups and finishing with famous pierogi (dumplings) of many kinds, stuffed with cabbage and mushrooms, potato, or meat can be tried . Getting there is a matter of a few minutes walk from the Old Town or by using tram lines (tram stop: Starowilna).

11. The authentic pierogi experience

INFO: U Stasi ul. Mikoajska 16, Link, FB, MapWhen it comes to food, Poland is famous for its kielbasa (sausage) and pierogi (dumplings). The latters fame was proven in my conversations with foreigners, who always warmly mentioned them and dreamed about having a chance to try them again. As a popular dish, they are available in many restaurants across Krakow. Nevertheless, remembering their folk roots I would like to suggest their local and authentic form, served in U Stasi at 16 Mikoajskastreet, right in the city center.

At U Stasi, dumplings with liver and apple or other sophisticated pleasures won't be witnessed . They dont even have a webpage in English. It doesnt matter, however, when the authenticity of experience is aimed at and the inter-lingual communication skills is trusted (or in the fact that its hard to find in the Old Town a place without an English speaker). The place focuses on classics. We can find there pierogi with meat and pork fat, russian pierogi (with mashed potato) or in sweet variation, with strawberry, plum, or apple, topped with whipped cream or butter. Mingling with locals, eating delicious food prepared with passion and spiced up with tradition, we can really enjoy this truly Polish experience.

12. Where the new meets the old - rave in the historical palace

INFO: Klub Cie ul. w. Jana 15, Link, FB, MapEverything evolves, changes its shape and purpose. In the palace serving once Polish aristocratic family, Lubomirski, today we can enjoy one of the best parties in Krakow. Established in the basement of historical building, KlubCie for 12 years is a bright point on the map of citys night life. Thanks to its unforgettable events, classy regulars and interior matching the rich past of location with modern, brave additions, the place earned in recent years 3 prizes for the best club in the city and remains a very popular destination for party-hungry locals and travellers.

KlubCie is not hard to find. If we stay in the city centre, it is a walking distance. Located at 15 witego, Jana Street, its popularity and proximity is on the one hand a big advantage and a guarantee of a well-spent night, but on the other hand, the club can turn out to be pretty loaded. Better then think early about reservations. Once you have done it, there is nothing that can stop you from a classy night out.

13. Open for new musical experiences

INFO: Prozak 2.0 Plac Dominikaski 6, Link, FB, MapProzak is dead, long live the Prozak 2.0! This cult destination for music lovers from Krakow since 2012, works hard to keep up with the legend of its predecessor. While attracting locals and newcomers, it underlines the importance of good music in creating the best club atmosphere. No wonder then that its taste in choosing artists became half-legendary and was never a subject of serious doubt. The relaxed atmosphere of the place, company of passionate fans of electronic music and various artists from around the world combine to form a solid foundation for an amazing clubbing joint.

It doesn't have to be looked for in the shady backstreets far from the city centre. Prozak 2.0, with its quality music and unique atmosphere based on the owners concept and visitors influence, waits for us at PlacDominikanski 6. Give it a shot and follow the never ending stream of visitors.

14. Underground salt chapel is waiting for you

INFO: Kopalnia Soli Wieliczka ul. , Link, FB, Map, Transportation Map

The power of medieval Poland was based not only on territorial gains and military strength. One of its pillars was also salt trade, thanks to Wieliczka and Bochnia mines. Today the exploitation is finished but Wieliczka has gained significance as a tourist destination of unusual beauty.

First theres darkness and the cold air with a specific mineral-rich taste. The fear hidden in ones subconscious fades quickly, as we start to wander around tunnels and main routes tourism, mining and pilgrimage. All of them are monuments of the human spirit and determination to shape nature according to his will. With the beauty of the historic or religious sculptures, majesty of spacious chambers and especially charming underground chapel, where from time to time masses are performed, it will be hard to find an experience similar to this one. Arrival in Wieliczka is a matter of taking from the main station a suburban train or bus number 304.

15. Entertainment and ArtINFO: Klub Pikny Pies ul. BoegoCiaa 9, FB, Map

Pikny Pies, the child of passion for a bunch of artists from Krakow, is a representative place for citys artistic nightlife, where entertainment mixes with art, ordinary people meet with intellectual elites and normal meets abnormal. Few drinks by the bar one evening, may result in new friendships, lovely conversation on the border between ordinary chit chat and humorous wordplays. It is here that people, instead of mainstream music, can hear avant-garde sounds or classics not branded as golden by hordes of nostalgic 80s lovers. Its new incarnation offers us a dance floor so we can move to the rhythm of alternative music along with fellow initiates of this cosy, off the beat track.

Pikny Pies is located in Kazimierz, a walking distance from the Old Town. We can also get there using tram lines. Instead of frequenting places that please common taste, lets pay a visit to this small island of independence.

16. Enjoy a homemade dinner with locals

INFO: Eataway.com Link, FB

One of the advantages of travelling is trying new tastes and discovering treasures of local cuisine. People achieve it by paying a visit to restaurants recommended by fellow travellers or locals. However, the era of internet is successively undermining their privileged position in favour of more cosy and uncommercial ideas. In Krakow the symbol of these new times is eataway.com, where locals invite us to their homes. There, we have a chance to eat homemade dinner in cameral ambience, sharing our stories with hosts and other participants. There is no rush or formal customer-seller relationship, on the contrary, we feel like old friends who are visiting. Looking at reviews, it is an unbelievably positive experience and I hope that its relevance to citys culture of dining will increase with time.

17. A boat cruise to Tyniec Abbey

INFO: Vistula Cruises to Tyniec Vistula river bank, next to Wawel Castle, Link 1, Link 2, MapIts time to add a whole new perspective to your Krakow experience! Dont hesitate to head to the riverside next to Wawel Castle, where various boats await tourists willing to enjoy a Vistula tour. To make this experience even more memorable, its good to set towards Tyniec Abbey. The journey, estimated at around 4 hours, provides us with a spectacular view of many notable sites, some of which present their full potential only in this way. Wawel, Norbertines Abbey, Krakow boulevards, Stradom and Kazimierz districts, historical churches, famous mounds, Tyniec forest , these are just examples of sights awaiting us on the road. Finally, we arrive next to Tyniec Abbey, thoroughly renovated to reminisce its splendid past. Hours of peaceful cruise will give us a chance to take a break from the atmosphere of the big city and restore energy lost during hours of on-foot sightseeing. There are no fixed hours for tours, early reservation may therefore be necessary.

18. Take part in revival of Jewish Quarter

INFO: FestiwalKulturyydowskiej/Jewish Culture Festival ul. Dajwr (Festival Quarter), Link, FB, Map

From June 25 to 5th of July, Kazimierzs Jewish character will be celebrated in proven and yet still evolving form of Jewish Culture Festival. It is a rare chance to not only witness the material heritage of Jewish district, but to inspirit it through various activities. The choice of ways in which we can interact with Jewish culture stretches out from lectures, meetings with interesting people and film screenings to tours and prayers offered in historical synagogues. Instead of merely entertaining the visitors, it aims at creating experience by changing the local surrounding with its Quarter project, settled in the back of the Old Synagogue. In this way, we will not only participate in the rich program of the event, but also take a breath of the festival spirit while drinking tea and reading a book.

Through the atmosphere of the place, rich offer of activities and the spirit of organisers-participants cooperation, Jewish Culture Festival creates a unique atmosphere of celebration of Jewish heritage and modernity. This year it will be enforced by participation of the Gelada group from Israel, bringing a new, inspiring quality to this noble event. Please dont skip it if you are in Krakow one of these days.19. Visit the oasis of ambitious cinema

INFO: Kino pod Baranami Rynek Gwny 27, Link, FB, Map

Nowadays, it is hard to find a good movie outside of Hollywood industry. Multiplexes in the name of increased profits are ready to forget about smaller, cheaper productions not backed by enormous marketing machine. If, despite these tendencies, we are willing to enjoy a nice movie outside of mainstream, our only hope is in art-houses.

One of Krakws art-houses, Kino pod Baranami, is expecting us in the heart of Old Town, namely 27 Main Square. While focusing primarily on European and artistic movies, it doesnt limit itself, as it is open for all the titles recognized as good, interesting, untypical. Its narrow specialisation on the border of cinema industry, surprisingly didnt force its owners to resign from investments, which resulted in a series of renovations and expansion. Finally, Kino pod Baranami possesses 3 projection rooms adjusted to the requirements of modern productions and proudly competes for the hearts and wallets of the citys inhabitants, apparently with satisfying results. Acknowledging the fact, that we need a classical entertainment, lets not forget that at least from time to time, its good to have an intellectual adventure.

Its definitely not a tourist centre, therefore it retained its unique, local climate in the centre of the metropolis. Local dialect and hermetic atmosphere additionally spice up the event, enabling us to feel the real rhythm of local life without the price tag and tourism bordering.

From the practical point of view, time is the most important issue. Sellers start to gather around 6 AM, a lot of them start to pack around 8 or 9 am. Also visitors come mostly in these hours, providing us with the special ambience of bargaining and fighting for best findings. Officially this specific flea market closes at 2 PM, but from personal experience, morning remains a safe option. Finally, HalaTargowa isnt only an intellectual experience. From the nearby stands we can acquire a sausage regarded to be one of the best in Krakow. HalaTargowa can be reached by tram lines 1, 9, 11, 12, 22 and 50.21. Taste of Tradition at HalaTargowa

INFO: Stands with Krakow sausage surroundings of HalaTargowa, ul. , FB, Map

Lets assume, that theyve heard about famous Polish sausage (in Polish: - kiebasa). They didnt? Well, this particular type of meat enjoys a well-deserved esteem from many travellers who happened to cross through Poland.

When it comes to Krakw, the city even has a self-titled sausage, called KiebasaKrakowska. To try it, lets follow local customs and head towards HalaTargowa (trams: 1, 9, 11, 12, 22 and 50). Once weve arrived, its hard not to spot stands surrounded by hungry and impatient customers. The specialty of the place can be only one sausage. Grilled on wood, this delicious dish is getting ready for you to take it and enjoy paired with soda. And all of it for less than you think.

22. Night out on KazimierzsPlacNowy.

INFO: Alchemia ul. Ester 5, Kazimierz, Link, FB, MapKazimierz, famous for its Jewish heritage sites, changes its appearance in the night. From a noble, historical district it becomes a centre of nightlife with its cafes, clubs and bars. If we are to pick one place as a starting point, its safe to point out PlacNowy (New Square), located conveniently close to Dietla street, marking the border between Kazimierz and Old Town, from where its a walking distance.

In PlacNowy itself there are enough places to visit, most of them enjoying a special atmosphere on the verge of splendid sentimentalism and a new, international face of the city. Lets take Alchemia as a fine example and give it a try. Sitting in dark, cosy corners of this spot, we can enjoy absinth served just the way it should be, with fire, sugar and fine glass or switch to a rich choice of beers. If we come on the right day, we will be able to join one of many concerts taking place in Alchemia. There is no place for random music there; we can only encounter jazz or ambitious electronic gigs created to please the sophisticated audience crowding the place on a daily basis. More than that, the club cooperates with local artistic initiatives, such as the upcoming Jewish Culture Festival.

It wont be an easy trip. They wont see huge banners inviting them to join. There will be no guide and people in the street will be mostly confused about our destination. Lets look for Krakws secret gardens, owned by numerous monasteries.

Strolling in the city, it is hard to imagine that in our proximity, stretches out many parks, one of them well-maintained and retaining its old features and style, while others fading and serving as vegetable gardens. Hidden behind houses or high, impenetrable walls, these green areas are relicts of feudal grants to orders. To see them, it is necessary to enter neighbouring buildings and have a look from a window, balcony, or roof. The aura of mystery is no doubt exciting and tempting us to explore more and more, but for the sake of citys inhabitants lets hope that one day the walls will be toppled to give a way for social life to flourish in pleasant, green ambience.

24. Have a bite of culture while chilling in inner garden

INFO: Kolanko/ Magazyn Kultury ul. Jzefa 17, Kazimierz, Link, FB, Map

Kolanko is one of the places which make Kazimierz the place it is. Founded as a restaurant and not more, with years, its ambitions grew and influenced not only the places character and esteem, but also its surrounding lively Jewish quarter. As all places in Kazimierz, it isnt far from the city centre and we can get there by walking or by tram number. Lets not get tricked though by the cosy design of the first room, theres more waiting for us. There is a garden, whose importance rises for obvious reasons in summer and a second big room, dedicated to cultural activities under the name MagazynKultury. Kolanko, therefore, is a holistic experience. One day we can have a delicious dinner there, then have tea in the garden, enjoying the pleasures of Polish summer evenings and summarize the experience with concert or movie screening. Its owners passion for new challenges and cultural experiments, promises us that the trend will continue and following years will witness even greater accomplishments for this already unforgettable place.

25. Try a famous Polish herring in surprising combinations

INFO: Ambasada ledzia ul. Stolarska 8, Link, FB, Map

Herring and pickle, this couple is a traditional addition to Polish vodka. Our city has a special place to try herring in many unorthodox forms. Ambasadaledzia (Embassy of Herring) is awaiting us with such extravagant ideas like herring with mango or strawberries. Looking at the reactions of people, the concept received a wide applause and the site itself gained a special status. Merging curiosity and talent to experiment with affordable menu and close cooperation with surrounding, Ambasadaledzia is no more an interesting but too brave attempt, it is rather an established centre of culinary rebellion. Based at 8/10 Stolarska street in the Old Town, it has already regulars (and between them artistic elites) but in the same time, acting on its name, it presents this Polish classic and fresh design to tourists. Additional activities, like Bloomsday, in tribute to Joyces Ulysses underlined with special menu, prove that the ambition and potential of the place doesnt end on the plate.

26. Stroll in green oasis of peace INFO: Botanic Garden of Jagiellonian University ul. Mikoaja Kopernika 27, Link,Map,Map of garden

Just to the East of Old Town, we can find a place to enjoy the beauty of nature in its many forms. Jagiellonian Universitys Botanical Garden, unlike monastery gardens hidden behind rows of buildings, is open for us for a small, symbolic fee. It isnt enormous in size, but it is a natural consequence of its rich past, extending up to XVIII century. The oldest specimen in the garden, an oak, is thought to be around the same age, contrary to the legends about its 500 years lifespan. Other less famous plants are equally interesting. Having a walk in the thoughtfully arranged alleys, we can witness many kinds of plants and ecosystems, from tropical forests to alpine climate. The diversity of life forms is celebrated here, not so far from the centre of a huge metropolis. Staying here for a few hours can make us forget about our location. For those of you who dont want to leave dont worry, the botanical garden is waiting for us every day.
