From the Pastor's Desk:
Dear Parishioners of St. Florian,
Thank you for your generosity and for all you do for St.Florian. At this time, when the heating season is approach-ing, we are trying to meet the demands that this means.
As you know, our heating bills are high every year. Our
old Church boiler is not only old, it is not sufficient for
our needs. Once it is turned on our gas bills skyrocket
because the controls on the boiler are not precise. We
are still waiting for the TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS
campaign to give us money to install a new boiler, but
we need to wait until the campaign is over before we
receive any money, so there is still a couple of years
ahead of us. Meanwhile we have to face high heating
bills. We are still paying on last winter's bills and the
new heating season will begin in about 2 months. To
prevent the accumulation of all the heating bills I would
like to ask you to increase your donation in the ENERGY
ENVELOPE. I hope that the heating season will be mild
for all of us, but once the Church boiler is turned on
we are still paying for the usage.
I will keep you in my prayers, please keep me in yours.
Yours in Christ
Fr. Robert

The Paschal Octave and
Divine Mercy SundayEaster is the “Feasts of Feasts,” the “Solemnity ofSolemnities,” the Church’s highest feast, the holiestday of the year.
Liturgical, the “eight days” of Easter constitute a singleday, the day of the new creation. The Church beginscelebrating at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday andcontinues through the Octave of Easter: Every day inanother Easter, another day to rejoice in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus!
After his resurrection, Jesus took great care to showhis apostles his hands and side, pointing to the woundsof the Passion, especially the wound in his heart, thesource from which flows the great wave of mercypoured out on humanity.
Since 2000, the Church has designated the SecondSunday ofEaster as Divine Mercy Sunday to celebratethe fact that Jesus still calls us to immerse ourselvesin his mercy and love.
The Divine Mercy devotion has grown greatly in pop-ularity since Pope John Paul II declared the SecondSunday of Easter Divine Mercy Sunday when he ca-nonized the Polish Saint Faustina Kowalska on April30, 2000. Saint Faustina’s revelations put a great em-phasis on this day as a “day of mercy.” The DivineMercy chaplet is prayed using Rosary beads, with specialtexts emphasizing the saving Passion ofChrist.
The Resurrection ofChrist is the very miracle ofmercythat has forever changed our destiny as God’s sons anddaughters. In Easter joy we recall that great miracleand its promise to us.

AltarPaul Turner
The altar is a fixed, freestanding table, the central focusfor the celebration of the Eucharist. It is both altar andtable. As altar, it is the place of sacrifice where Christ, who was sacrificed on the cross for us, becomes pre-sent again under the sacramental form of bread andwine. As table, it gathers the people of God to sharethe Body and Blood ofChrist, their holiest meal, whichrecalls the passover and grants a foretaste of the hea-venly banquet.
The altar is traditionally made of stone, but it may beconstructed of another solid, well-crafted materialwhich establishes its beauty and dignity. Its rectangularshape suited the liturgy before the Second VaticanCouncil, when the Scriptures were read from the sidesof the altar. Today's altar is often more square to ac-commodate the priest, the bread and the wine. But itshould always be clear among church furnishings thatthe altar is the center of focus.
When the altar of a church is consecrated, the bishopanoints its top with chrism. Chrism is the perfumed oilwe reserve for the sacraments which are celebrated onlyonce in one's lifetime: baptism, confirmation and ordi-nation. The consecration of an altar sets it apart per-manently for its sacred purpose. In conjunction withthis anointing, the altar also represents Jesus, whosetitle "Christ" means "anointed." The proper reverenceupon entering a church is to bow to the altar, unlessthe tabernacle is centrally located, in which case onegenuflects to the tabernacle.
In the past, the altar was located against the rear walland the priest celebrated Mass with his back to thepeople. Additional altars were often located in chapelsaround the church, permitting other priests to celebrateseparate Masses at the same time. Today a churchshould have one altar, freestanding so the priest maywalk completely around it. It should be permanentlyfixed to reflect the stability of our faith.
