    HYMNS OF THE SAMAVEDA

    Translated with a Poular !ommentar"

    P#EFA!E

The Sama+eda, or Veda o Hol" Son.s, third in the usual order o enumeration o the

three Vedas, ran/s next in sanctit" and litur.ical imortance to the #.+eda or Veda

    o #ecited raise$ 0ts Sanhita, or metrical ortion, consists chie1" o h"mns to 2e

chanted 2" the 3d.atar riests at the erormance o those imortant sacri4ces in

which the 5uice o the Soma lant, clari4ed and mixed with mil/ and other

    in.redients, was o6ered in li2ation to +arious deities$ The !ollection is made u o

    h"mns, ortions o h"mns, and detached +erses, ta/en mainl" rom the #.+eda,

transosed and re-arran.ed, without reerence to their ori.inal order, to suit the

reli.ious ceremonies in which the" were to 2e emlo"ed$ 0n these comiled h"mns

there are re7uent +ariations, o more or less imortance, rom the text o the#.+eda as we now ossess it which +ariations, althou.h in some cases the" are

aarentl" exlanator", seem in others to 2e older and more ori.inal than the

    readin.s o the #.+eda$ 0n sin.in., the +erses are still urther altered 2"

rolon.ation, reetition and insertion o s"lla2les, and +arious modulations, rests,

and other modi4cations rescri2ed, or the .uidance o the o&ciatin. riests, in the

%anas or Son.-2oo/s$ Two o these manuals, the %rama.e"a.dna, or

!on.re.ational, and the Aran"a.ana or Forest Son.-8oo/, ollow the order o the

    +erses o art 0, o the Sanhita, and two others, the 3ha.ana, the 3h"a.ana, o Part

00$ This art is less dis5ointed than art 0, and is .enerall" arran.ed in trilets whose

4rst +erse is oten the reetition o a +erse that has occurred in art 0$

There is no clue to the date o the comilation o the Sama+eda H"mns, nor has the

comiler9s name 2een handed down to us$ Such a manual was unnecessar" in the

earl" times when the Ar"ans 4rst came into 0ndia, 2ut was re7uired or .uidance

and use in the comlicated ritual ela2orated 2" the in+aders ater their exansion

and settlement in their new homes$
