Winners of the Maria Marcinkowska Contest have been determined

The Maria Marcinkowska Russian language contest was held on 23 January 2015. This year’s edition was the 29th. The best participant in the intermediate group was Zu-zanna Imas, a third-year student from Faculty of International Economics. In the beginners group, the best con-testant was Katarzyna Czajkowska,

a third -year student of Faculty of Economics. Both winners received a cash prize of 400 PLN. Four other participants were awarded prizes of 200 PLN or 300 PLN.

Erasmus farewell gala

Another semester at the Poznań University of Economics has come to an end. It is a time of farewells, packing and travelling home for the foreign students that have spent the last five months here. Traditionally, to thank them for the time spent together, the PEU section of the Erasmus Student Network has organized a farewell supper combined with the Erasmus Awards ceremony. Over 100 foreign students competed for the titles of James Bond, Marilyn Monroe and less flattering, yet proud, Benny Hill and Stifler Award. The winners were

determined by voting held among all the foreign students. This year, the contest was dominated by the

German students. The victors re-ceived commemorative statuettes.

The gala was held on 16 January 2015, with dr hab. Maciej Żukowski,

prof. zw. PUE and the Department of Research and International Coopera-tion staff as its guests of honour.

According to our expert, GOAP did not live up to the Poznań residents’ expectations.

The idea to revolutionize waste management in the sensitive holliday season and unreasonably high formal

Enrollment for ERASMUS+ 2015/2016

From 3 February 2015 the Department of Research and International Coop-eration of PEU is recruiting students for study tours and traineeships in the ERASMUS+ programme. Students can apply for study tour scholarships to go to one of over 100 partner universities in 26 countries, in the academic year 2015/2016.

Students who participate in study tours and traineeships abroad are eligible for a scholarship. Its amount depends on the chosen country. In the 2015/2016 academic year it is 300, 400 or 500 EUR per month for study tours, and 400, 500 or 600 EUR per month for traineeships. Students eligible for maintenance grants will be

financed by the POWER programme and will receive an additional 200 EUR per month.

After the enrollment, the students qualified can participate in a one-month language course organized by the Foreign Language Teaching Centre, paid in full by the ERASMUS+ programme fund.

Controlling at PUE – investment in innovation

What is the role of controlling at PUE?

Controlling at PUE is one of the management tools that provides the user with methods, techniques, and models for the process realisation. It also plays the role of orgainzer, coordinator of actions and advisor to the board. Controlling is also a new, different way of thinking and acting that allows detection of bottlenecks, and ensures active and constructive cooperation between all employees involved in a given process.

In our work, we often use bench-marking so we go beyond boundaries of organization. The benchmarking analysis of public higher education institutions performed by our team

shows that more and more of them (not only business schools) see a need to introduce controlling and use it

both in the operational and strategic field.

There is a strategic survey conducted at our University every year. What is it for?

The survey has been conducted on a regular basis since 2010 and it is always focused on previous academic year. In 2014, the survey had its fifth edition in which 408 employees took part.

It is one of the tools used to assess the level of realisa-tion of the PUE’s Strategy, in reference to the PUE Depart-ments’ activity and achieve-ments. It is a process of strategic

controlling, within which the Con-trolling Team operates. Apart from determining the level of implementa-

tion of the PUE’ Strategy, the survey is designed in such a manner that the results of the Departments achieved in the various strategic areas of inter-est, can be used to create a ranking of the most comprehensive faculties. The position in the ranking depends on the Departments’ results in all of the strategic areas.

What areas of interest are included in the survey?

The survey is divided into 10 parts devoted to the following fields: publi-cations, promotions, grants, scientific committees, conferences, educational offer, didactics, scientific associations,

Interview with mgr Anna Matuszak-Jankowiak, Manager of the Controlling Team at PUE

Controlling is not only a source of financial information and a tool for planning and control. It should also have a major impact on development through searching for innovative solutions.

prizes, organizational activity. These areas were deemed to be crucial from the PUE Strategy’s point of view and therefore all the questions relate to them.

Are there any conclusions from the 2014 survey yet?

They will be available on the UNI-VERSITY STRATEGY Staff Forum. One such conclusion was that there is

a need for an application supporting the survey, with an option to collect data from available databases. During the survey process, we encountered several technical problems. Also, the University staff gave us many ideas for improving the survey by adding new questions and expanding areas of interest. The currently used appli-cation is not very flexible and making some of the changes may lead to loss of data or results. We are discussing

this matter with the PUE Computer Centre.

What are the goals of the Control-ling Team for the new year?

Undoubtedly, one of the main priori-ties is taking all possible actions to purchase a controlling system to sup-port and streamline the operational and strategic workload. We have already placed an appropriate order. It will allow us to design and implement new cost accounting and budgeting system.

We would also like to limit the consumption of time and labour, associated, among others, with the reporting and data delivery. It would help facilitate not only our work, but also the employees of other units of our University.

Thank you very much.Sylwia Jurga

In order to illustrate the essence of controlling, the most accurate would be comparing it to a rudder which is a movable part of a vessel that can either keep or change the vessel’s course when in motion. It alters the vessel’s orientation in space.

controlling is not an audit – even though it deals with cost control, controlling is not accounting – these are cooperating elds, controlling is not planning – but it’s a part of the nancial planning process, controlling is not a nancial analysis – yet, it’s involved in performing analyses, controlling is not cost management – although its functioning is based on information from cost analysis

Application for the PUE alumni

Secretary of State in the Prime Minister’s Office is a PUE graduate

The competition will consist of two parts and will last for two days (25-26 February 2015). The first part is Jam – workshops based on

the Design Thinking methodology . The idea developed at the Stan-ford University is used by leading IT corporations, including Google,

Apple and SAP. Using tools specific to the industry design, it helps to create solutions that best meet the needs of consumers. The workshops

will provide creative support for par-ticipants, reducing the time spent on detailed planning of application bases and specification of brief

records. Based on the outcomes of the workshops, the companies par-ticipating in the event will translate ideas into programming language. The 24-hour coding marathon will end with the presentation of application prototypes, from which the jury will select the best team who will be awarded a contract for the project’s implementation.

The competing teams will be composed of maximum four people, representing the mobile application developers from across the whole country. The software companies willing to participate in the event can submit via www.needapp.pl/uep, where they can also find more information about the competition and the conditions and benefits of participation.

Senator Andżelica Możdżanowska has been appointed Secretary of State in the Prime Minister’s Office. A graduate of the Faculty of Management will be responsible for the government’s

relations with parliament and will oversee legislative work. Andżelica Możdżanowska is also the founder and president of the “Po Prostu Pomagam” Associationcharity

organization helping children and residents of Wielkopolska. She is a winner of the Kobieta Biznesu award in the field of economic consulting and EU funding opportunities.

Software companies from across the whole country will be developing mobile solutions for graduates of the Poznan University of Economics, during the 7th edition of the PUE University Days. The best team will win a contract for the implementation of the proposed project.

You start off with many courses that let you gain a very broad knowledge of many subjects and then, towards the end, the subject matter is narrowed down for the purposes of specialization. It is then when you have time to explore the area in which you see your future. Contact with teachers who were willing to share their experience with us gave us a lot. The fact that we met a lot of friends is just as important.

the team spirit. At the University we learned how to work in a team thanks to project work system. It was an interesting experience. We developed good business and management habits. Clear division of tasks and responsibility for them are of great importance to us. We always have clearly defined objectives. Together we shape our company policies, which helps us work constructively and without conflicts.

build our company on solid business foundations. Knowing how to do it turned out to be very useful as it helped us to obtain a loan to start our company. Although we are not a global corporation yet, we learned how to act as if we were one. We know how to manage our business with good business practices, that we learned at the University of Economics. For example, we do not plan only for the short term and concentrate just on current tasks; and this is the case with many new companies.

diversify the portfolio of brands within our company. We are already preparing for this. We also aim to increase the number of foreign orders. At the same time, we are planning to increase employment at least four times.

we like out-of-town field trips. Every chance we get, we pack up and disappear for the weekend. Depending on the season, we go skiing, snowboarding, walking, swimming; we spend time with our families and talk for hours. Individually, Agata is interested in photography and graphics; Marta runs a blog about fashion and is a voracious reader of books about selfdevelopment.

PUE IN THE MEDIA

In self-service, packaging identifies the product / brand, indicating the price range, and – most importantly – is the carrier and communicator of key information about the product (content, expiration date, method of use). – In particular, it concerns prod-uct categories such as cosmetics and food – explains Dr. Magda Ankiel-Ho-ma from the Department of Product

Marketing in her statement for the Handel magazine. The PUE expert also pointed out innovations that are used in the packaging of products. – They are both new material solutions, for example biomaterials, new technolo-gies, new solutions in the labeling, as well as common innovative construction and graphics solutions, or de facto marketing innovations.

In Poznań, the price of one square me-ter is 6500 PLN on average. – However, nearly 4,000 apartments will not be sold straight away – says Dr. Krzysztof Celka (Department of Investment

and Real Estate, PUE) in his statement for the Radio Mercury. Developers still offer apartments built between 2009 and 2010. However, for the time being, prices do not go down.

Our scientists spoke about the Swiss currency appreciation. – On the basis of the volume of trade and the pres-sure, Central Bank of Switzerland not-ed that defending the exchange rate of 1.2 would require too much invest-ment. (...) Now, the markets have to find a new equilibrium level – explains Dr. Tadeusz Kowalski (Department of International Competitiveness, PUE) in an interview for TVP Poznań in the „Economic Telescope” programme. He also adds that the appreciation of the Swiss franc is a consequence of the difficult situation in the Euro-

zone. On the other hand, Dr. Pawel Marszalek (Department of Banking, PUE) in his statement for the local media points out that the current economic situation can revert within the next year or two. – The most important thing is not to panic – says Dr. Marszalek. Other PUE experts think that, for the time being, people who have Swiss-franc loans should refrain from the currency conversion of their credits and wait for the situation on the currency market to stabilize.

– Protesting miners represent the Polish raison d’etat. They act for the benefit of the country and future gen-erations – emphasizes Dr. Agnieszka Ziomek (Department of Economic Policy and Local Government, PUE). As a WTK guest, she recalled that coal mines are state property and a resource affecting the valuation of the country. – Trade unions counter-balancing economic interests are a thing of the past – adds the econo-

mist. Trade unions are aware that they are needed in the system of participa-tory actions which does business on the basis of economic calculation. However, symmetry of information is still on the employers’ side and it results in conflicts that are difficult to manage. Dr. Agnieszka Ziomek also in-dicated that discussions between the centrals of trade unions from various industries have a potential of gaining strong public support.

HCP put up for sale several build-ings from Hetmanska and 28 Czer-wca 1956 streets. According to real estate specialist Dr. Krzysztof Celka (Department of Investment and Real Estate, PUE) these plots are an attractive offer, especially as office

space. They have one downside though – they are difficult to get to. In his statement for Gazeta Wyborcza, PUE expert stressed, however, that their value will grow along with the development of the Free Tracks.
