COME VISIT US IN WINCHESTER!
A powerful first step in the car buying pro-cess is to get approved for a loan. Getting ap-proved for a loan from a bank, credit union or online lender will show you what inter-est rate you qualify for. If the interest rate offered is unexpected-ly high, you will know that there are prob-lems with your credit history that need to be resolved before you move forward. Getting approved in advance will also mean you can negotiate at the deal-ership as a cash buyer, which is much easier. You can still accept dealership financing, but getting approved before you even walk into the dealership will be the bargaining chip to get you the best in-
terest rate. The second step is finding a value for your trade-in. The internet has several options, such as edmonds.com or kbb.com to help you find the price of your used car. You can select options and also grade your trade-in according to condition. The third step is the most fun; finding your new car! As you search for your car, keep in mind that the more flexible you can be about options and color, the wider the range of the vehicles you’ll find for sale. Be-ing flexible will also give you more lever-age to negotiate a bet-ter price, since you are not emotionally con-nected to one specific car.

State Park is Ten-nessee’s largest and most visited state park. The park en-compasses more than 26,000 acres sprawled across the eastern top of the rugged Cumberland Plateau. Laced with cascades, gorges, waterfalls, streams and lush stands of virgin hardwood timber, the park beckons those who enjoy nature at her finest. Fall Creek Falls, at 256 feet, is one of the high-est waterfalls in the eastern United States. Other water-falls within the park include Piney Falls, Cane Creek Falls and Cane Creek
Cascades. Fall Creek Falls
features an inn with 145 hotel rooms, a restaurant and extensive meet-ing space. There are also 30 cabins and 222 campsites. Backcountry camp-ing is also available with permit. The park also has four playgrounds, horse stables with guided trail rides, five cov-ered picnic pavil-ions and an Olym-pic-sized pool with a wading area which is open Memorial Day to Labor Day.Fall Creek Falls

2nd Annual “Hear Tell” Storytelling Fest at the Morrison Public LibrarySecond Annual “Hear Tell”
Storytelling Fest at Morrison Public Library will be held Saturday March 5th at 10:00 am.
A Free event, the focus for this year’s “Hear Tell” Sto-rytelling Fest will be Uncle Dave Macon.
Uncle Dave himself said “the first time I ever played and sang in public” was in 1921, at Morrison, Tennessee; “the Methodist Church there needed a new door. I gave a show, then passed the hat and collected the money, $17.00”.
A great grandson of Uncle Dave Macon, Dr. Michael D. Doubler will be guest speaker on March 5th. While there is no admission to attend, books and CD’s will be available for purchase.
Joining us again this year for the 2nd Annual “Hear Tell” Storytelling Fest is musician Dr. Sam Young . He will per-form immediately following Dr. Doubler’s presentation. Like Uncle Dave Macon, Dr. Young has also played at the Methodist Church in Morri-son, Tennessee.
Michael D. Doubler served twenty-three years on ac-tive duty as a Regular Army and full-time Army National Guard officer. He is a gradu-ate of the U.S. Military Acad-emy at West Point, New York, and holds a doctorate degree in military history from The Ohio State University. From 1985-1988, he taught military history as a faculty member at West Point. Afterwards, he was assigned to the National Guard Bureau in Washing-ton, D.C., working in the Pen-tagon. Following his military retirement, he headed Dou-bler Enterprises, a research and writing firm, for over a decade.
Mike Doubler previously authored Closing With the Enemy: How GIs Fought the War in Europe, 1944-1945, which received two national book awards and was includ-ed on the Chief of Staff of the Army’s professional reading list. He is also the author of Civilian in Peace, Soldier in War: The Army National Guard, 1636-2000, considered the definitive history of the
Army Guard. Dr. Doubler has appeared on several na-tional media outlets, includ-ing The History Channel, CBS News, ABC World News Tonight and National Public Radio. In addition, he has authored over twenty special studies and reports for the federal government and is a frequent lecturer.
A great-grandson of Uncle Dave Macon, Mike is cur-rently under contract with a major publisher to complete Dixie Dewdrop: The Uncle Dave Macon Story, the first, book length biography of the Grand Ole Opry superstar, and is a consultant for the upcoming stage production Walking In Sunlight, a musi-cal of Uncle Dave’s life. 1954 Children receive first polio vaccine-On this day in 1954, a group of children from Arsenal Elementary School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, receive the first injections of the new polio vaccine developed by Dr. Jo-nas Salk.Though not as devastating as the plague or
influenza, poliomyelitis was a highly con-tagious disease that emerged in terrifying outbreaks and seemed impossible to stop. Attacking the nerve cells and sometimes the central nervous system, polio caused mus-cle deterioration, paralysis and even death. Even as medicine vastly improved in the first half of the 20th century in the Western world, polio still struck, affecting mostly children but sometimes adults as well. The most famous victim of a 1921 outbreak in America was future President Franklin Del-ano Roosevelt, then a young politician. The disease spread quickly, leaving his legs per-manently paralyzed. In the late 1940s, the March of Dimes, a
grassroots organization founded with Presi-dent Roosevelt’s help to find a way to defend against polio, enlisted Dr. Jonas Salk, head of the Virus Research Lab at the University of Pittsburgh. Salk found that polio had as many as 125 strains of three basic types, and that an effective vaccine needed to combat all three. By growing samples of the polio vi-rus and then deactivating, or “killing” them by adding a chemical called formalin, Salk developed his vaccine, which was able to immunize without infecting the patient. After mass inoculations began in 1954, ev-
eryone marveled at the high success rate–some 60-70 percent–until the vaccine caused a sudden outbreak of some 200 cases. Af-ter it was determined that the cases were all caused by one faulty batch of the vac-cine, production standards were improved, and by August 1955 some 4 million shots had been given. Cases of polio in the U.S. dropped from 14,647 in 1955 to 5,894 in 1956, and by 1959 some 90 other countries were using Salk’s vaccine. A later version of the polio vaccine, devel-
oped by Albert Sabin, used a weakened form of the live virus and was swallowed instead of injected. It was licensed in 1962 and soon became more popular than Salk’s vaccine, as it was cheaper to make and easier for people to take. There is still no cure for polio once it has been contracted, but the use of vaccines has virtually eliminated polio in the Unit-ed States. Globally, there are now around 250,000 cases each year, mostly in develop-ing countries.
