Perspective

• Perspective is an approximate representation, on a flat surface (such as paper), of an image as it is seen by the eye.• In drawing or painting, a way of portraying three dimensions

on a flat, two-dimensional surface by suggesting depth or distance is called perspective.

Characteristic features of perspective• Objects are smaller as their distance from the observer

increases.• All perspective drawings assume a viewer, who is a certain

distance away from the drawing.• Perspective drawings have a horizon line, which is often

implied. This line is directly opposite to the viewer's eye & represents objects infinitely far away.• Every perspective drawing has one or more vanishing points.

A vanishing point is a point on the horizon where parallel rays intersect. We can’t see beyond this point.

Types of perspectiveOne Point Perspective: 1 vanishing pointTwo Point Perspective: 2 vanishing points

Three Point Perspective: 3 vanishing points

Page 6: Perspective by salonie

One Point Perspective

• It has only one vanishing point on the horizon line• All parallel lines intersect at the vanishing point • Objects far away are smaller • Ex- Railway tracks, roads, room, corridor, etc.

Two Point Perspective

• It has two vanishing points on the horizon line • Two-point perspective has one set of lines parallel to the

picture plane and two sets oblique to it• Parallel lines oblique to the picture plane converge to a

vanishing point, which means that this set-up will require two vanishing points.• Ex- looking at the corner of a house/building.

Three Point Perspective• It has three vanishing points.• It is extremely Dramatic hence is used in cartoons and

animations.• It is further divided in two categories i.e. Bird’s eye view and

Worm’/ant’s eye view.• Bird’s eye view: when terrace is visible.• Worm’/ant’s eye view: when base is visible.• Ex- when we look down from airplane, looking up at a tall

building, etc.
