How to Avoid a Bed Bug problem. One bug can become a costly mess. As you have likely noticed Bed Bugs have been in the news a lot in the last few years. They have become commonplace enough to consider them a possible and even likely threat to infest your home. Bed Bugs do not typically survive the outdoors. Thus the only way homes become infested is to have them introduced somehow. The most common way they get into the home is through visits by friends or by your visiting somewhere else. Once a female bed bug ends up in your home, in order to infest it, it needs to have access to you to draw blood (like a mosquito). Since it is a crawling, nocturnal creature, it has to find you at rest in relative darkness. Thus the likely places this bug can begin to thrive is a bed or couch. Since trying to avoid having these brought into your home would likely require a huge and

undesirable change in life style, a few simple steps can virtually make your home uninfestable. The easy form of prevention is to simply use this bugs nature against itself. Bed Bugs have poor eyesight and wander in darkness thus they really do not use their eyes to navigate. And although they can usually smell you all over the home (you exhale carbon dioxide) they cannot tell where the smell comes from. So if the house is treated with a pesticide that works and lasts long enough to kill them (such as Temprid or Phantom) then the goal is to get this bug to cross that pesticide. So you can start with treating the inside of the home about every 9-12 months. Then implement a practice of placing items brought into the home far enough away from the beds or couches in order to make an intruding bugs life difficult. Also you can isolate your bed from the floor. This is done by putting the legs of the bed in some kind of bug interceptor (such as climbup bug interceptors sold online). If you keep the bed isolated (no bed skirt, no items touching the bed including underneath, and away from the wall) then as this bug cannot fly or jump or figure things out it will just keep crawling enough to cross that little bit of pesticide, over and over again until it is dead.
