Welcome to our second newsletter of 2020 - we hope that you are safely athome and that you are well! Much like many other services during this time, theHeretaunga Women’s Centre is currently physically closed with our staffworking remotely from home. However, we are continuing to offer our important support and services duringthe COVID-19 lockdown period. We are still providing vital counselling servicesby telephone and online. We are keeping in contact with women who would usually frequent the Centre, and those with extra needs, to provide emotional support during this time. Weare continuing to provide opportunities for women to connect with the Centrethrough social media, and as you may have already seen, we’re using ourFacebook page as a platform for keeping in contact with everyone providinginformation and updating our followers on our news. Whilst it's likely that it won't be business as usual for some time to come yet, this term we are excited to offer a number of programmes, activities and therapies online, and we will continue to provide counselling and other supports. Once we have received guidance that we can re-open our doors, we look seeing you atthe Centre again! Wishing you and your family a safe time over thecoming weeks.Take care – kia kahaAmanda

One thing that we can all do to help our whānau, friends andneighbours is to look after ourselves and each other. We havefound the following advice on the www.covid19.govt.nz website tobe really helpful: 'Kindness is an incredibly powerful way to show you are unitedagainst COVID-19. Managing your mental Well-being
Your emotional and mental well-beingduring this time is incredibly important.
The Government advises to ‘reach out toyour usual supports over the phone –
family and whānau, friends andworkmates. Sharing how we feel and
offering support to others is important. Wealso recommend sticking to a routine such
as having regular mealtimes, bedtimesand exercising.
‘If you feel you are not coping, it is
important to talk with a health professional. For support with grief, anxiety, distress or
mental well-being, you can call or text1737 – free, anytime, 24 hours a day, 7
days a week – to talk with a trainedcounsellor.
Tell yourself that how you are feeling is a
normal reaction and will pass – it’s nothingto be afraid of. We’re all in this together,
and while we might not be able to bephysically in touch right now, it’s important
to stay connected in other ways. NewZealand is known for its manaakitanga andnow more than ever we need to remember
the power of kindness and unitingtogether.
If you’re not sure what assistance may be
available, or you don’t know who tocontact for help, phone the Government
Helpline on 0800 779 997 (8am–1am, 7 days a week)'.
Guidance for Parents, Caregivers and Whānau
Whilst the current situation is overwhelming for many adults, it isimportant that we can help our children cope with any anxiety by
providing accurate information.
The Government advises that ‘children look to adults for guidanceon how to react to stressful events such as COVID-19. Parents,
caregivers, whānau and teachers will have a particularly importantpart to play in reassuring children at this time.
Children will react to and follow your verbal and non-verbal cues. If
you are able to stay informed and realistic, it will be easier for you toreassure children effectively as well.
Children need factual, age-appropriate information about COVID-19
so that they can also feel informed and in control. They need toknow how they can play a part in avoiding infection and slowing thespread of virus. They also need to feel that any fears they may have
can be talked about and addressed.’
