WILDCATS
MAYFIELD
SO, WHAT’S GOING ON AT MY ALMA MATER? As cool fall weather set in and the summer drew to a close, students at Mayfield High School returned to the classroom for another promising year. The Class of 2004 looks for-ward to making their last year in the halls of Mayfield their best. This year’s senior class follows the theme of “Cowboy Roundup” and so far, it seems as if they have roped in a suc-cessful year. The senior class plans to coordinate an excellent last year with president, Melissa Mann, vice president, Katie Comella, secretary, Bill Markt, treasurer, Michael Verdi, and spirit coordinators Joey Catulla and Jimmy Verdi. Early in the school year, Mayfield seniors rose to the challenge of collecting funds for the local United Way, showing their generous spirit by rounding up over $21,000 dollars in funds to assist the needy in Greater Cleveland. This truly remarkable achievement is just another factor that sets Mayfield apart from other school districts in Cuyahoga County. This October, alumni from across the country returned to walk to halls of their alma mater for Mayfield’s annual Homecoming festivities. This year’s Homecoming proved to be a daz-zling night for the students who attended. The theme was “A Night on the Town,” and the night truly proved to live up to this expectation. Court this year was comprised of Melissa Mann, Jackie Schmidt, Katie Comella, and Jen Ranells with Kammeron Hughes crowned as Homecoming queen. The memories made at this year’s celebration will surely not be forgotten by those who attended! The Mayfield Wildcat football team had another excellent season headed by Coach Larry Pinto, ‘80. Highlights of the season include a defeat of local Wildcat rival Brush on our home turf and a victorious Homecoming game against the Kenston Bombers. An outstand-ing season can also be attributed to both the boys and girls soccer teams, who kicked their way to repeated victory. The varsity volleyball team spiked their way to the head of compe-tition, and both boys and girls cross country ran ahead of the pack. Way to go, Wildcats!
The stars at Mayfield were not only on the field, however. Some of Mayfield’s brightest per-formances occurred on the stage. The title role of this year’s fall play, “The Final Trial of Richard III,” was played by senior thespian Nicholas Trowe. Mayfield hosted the 12th An-nual Show Choir festival in October, where show choirs from the area entertained audienc-es for a fun-filled evening. Our very own Limited Edition Show Choir took center stage un-der the direction of Mr. Stephen Glosser. Mayfield students garnered achievements in the academic arena, as well. Aleksandra Brickman, Peter Debaz, Peter Liou, Deborah Rho, Patrick Schnarrenberger, and Julia Vitkin all receive the distinguished honor of National Merit Semifinalists. These students are among the nation’s finest students regarding academic performance. The Class of 2004 and the rest of Mayfield High School have had many accomplishments thus far in the 2003-04 school year, and we look forward to many more. Kelsey Taylor, Class of ’05

SZU VIDEO AVAILABLE
With the passing of John Szuhay last June, the Mayfield fami-
ly lost one of our very best. Szu was a terrific teacher and an
even better drama director. His influence on so many Mayfield
graduates will live on forever. A memorial service was held in
the auditorium last July to pay tribute to this gifted man. As
part of the service, a detailed and highly inclusive video of
Szu’s life at Mayfield was shown. Over fifty copies of the vid-
eo were made. They sold out immediately after the memorial
service.
The video was made by Joe Korcuska (husband of Laurie
Nihiser, ‘83). Joe did an unbelievable job of capturing Szu’s
life at Mayfield. The video gave the viewer a remarkable re-
membrance of John. Joe has volunteered to make additional
copies for anyone who may wish to purchase one. The video
costs $20, the proceeds of which go directly into the John
Szuhay Memorial Scholarship fund. If you are unable to pick
up the video in either Mayfield Heights or Solon, please add
$5.00 for postage and we will ship it to you.
Send a check for $20 ($25 if we are mailing it to you) to:

CLASS OF ‘70 WEB SITE ESTABLISHED
The Class of ‘70 unveiled it’s class web site this past summer. It features pictures of their previous and current reunions and get-togethers, many school and historical pictures, and, for all Mayfield classes, a singles connec-tion, plus other great stuff. This is a creative must-see web site. Kudos to Jeff Glasser who put the web site together. The Association granted him lifetime member-ship for all his hard work. Jeff will continue to post infor-mation on the web site. You may contact him at his per-sonal e-mail address [email protected].

Class of ‘58 has two 45th reunions First, the Class of ‘58 held a reunion in Las Vegas for those able to get away a weekend in early October. Thanks to Bob Dunn and Carol Shannon for organizing this event. Las Vegas is its own fun and a reunion just adds to it for those able to attend. Then, on the local scene, the class also “reunited” during the annual Alumni Reverse Raffle/Staff Hall of Fame In-duction in November. This function is always well-attended because of all the guests and special events that go on. About 40 class members from ‘58 and their guests joined over 300 others at the reverse raffle. They had a chance to renew acquaintances with new Staff Hall of Fame members Rick Miner and Dutch Schmidt who were inducted along with Barb Pfender and Mike Ni-land. It was especially nice to see a few new faces from the class at this annual function. We hope they make it an annual visit every November. Special thanks to An-nette (Geraci) Alvarez with help from Jerry Fudurich and Bob Dunn for organizing the reunion.
Class of ‘63 Enjoys Two-day Reunion Fest
The Class of ‘63 helped pave the way for other classes to conduct an affordable reunion that includes a variety of options. On Friday our class had an informal reunion at the Aberdeen Party Center by Stonewater Golf Course. The committee made all the food and purchased the bev-erages for $10 per person. It was a long night with many stories shared. Quite a few classmates attended the re-union for the first time. On Saturday, our class mixed with the Alumni Reverse Raffle/Staff Hall of Fame induction event. We all sat to-gether in a group of tables with “63” pennants on them. What a great night it was, especially since Mike Niland ‘63 was one of the Mayfield staff members inducted. Two of the other inductees, Dutch Schmidt and Rick Miner, had a significant impact on the lives of many stu-dents within our class. It was a heartwarming night full of stories (and explanations about some of our former be-haviors). Dutch and Rick were really understanding!! We were all very impressed by the comments they made about their careers at Mayfield, including how much they actually knew about us as students. The committee worked diligently to prepare for the Friday night portion of our reunion. Saturday was, admittedly, quite easy to do. We just had to get dressed and go! Hats off to the following classmates: Al Agresta, Rose-mary DiCiccio, Wayne Farinacci, Blue Germano, An-na Mottolese Henretta, Joan Farinacci Karp, Diane Leonardi Kelly, Phylis Ludwig, Cheryl & Mike Niland, Kathe & Jim Shelby, Fran Johnson Slifko, Anthony Vaccariello, Diana DiPuccio Vitale, and Donna Vitan-za Vitantonio. It was especially nice to see some of our out-of-state classmates attend our 40th reunion. They included: Janet Maly Busta (CA), Ruth Krause Jacob-son (CO), Dan Newton (FL), El Pekarik (VA), and Ja-net Kluber Powers (FL).

Alumni Association Looking for Lost Members Since the inception of the Association, we have lost contact with many paid members and permanent members (65 and over) who have moved or married and not forwarded their new address to us. We need your help to locate these graduates. Our goal is to add as many back to the membership rolls as possible so they can continue receiving their due benefits. This list is quite long because this is the first time in over 20 years we have initiated this undertaking. If you have information on any of these graduates (address, phone number, e-mail, or if you know they are deceased), please forward what you know to the Association using our e-mail address: [email protected] Your efforts will be greatly appreciated by the Association and the lost member.

Another Great Group Inducted into Staff Hall of Fame
What a Wonderful Night of Reminiscing
This past November, the Alumni Association conducted it’s 23rd annual Reverse Raffle/Staff Hall of Fame Induction at the Normandy Party Center in Wickliffe. The Staff Hall of Fame is actually in it’s fourth year and has become a great addition to the raffle. The raffle itself is the Association’s major fundraiser. The largest turnout in recent years made this year’s raffle very successful. A great big thank you to all those who attended. This year the Association added a Silent Auction to the festivities. Participants were able to bid on such items as a condo at Indian Harbour, Florida, a suite at the Glidden House with dinner at Sergio’s and Cleveland Orchestra tickets, Cleveland Playhouse tickets and dinner at Club Allegro complete with a limo for the entire evening, and a “Cleveland Rocks” package including books, games and dinner tickets throughout the city of Cleveland. The Association would like to thank all the donors and those responsible for obtaining the auction items. It goes without saying that a Silent Auction will be included in next years raffle, also. Note: our key people are working on LeBron James!!! Once again, Sandy (’61) and Linda Carmigiano, owners of the Normandy Party Center, provided a tasteful all-you-can-eat family style dinner. Their food always receives the highest praise. Tony (‘53) and Carol Leonardi, also known as Rhythm Connection, did an outstanding job of keeping everyone on the dance floor. They know just the right combination of music our group appreciates, and they are also excellent line dance teachers. Several classes utilized the raffle as part of their class reunion. While a few other classes have done this in the past, this year there were groups of tables from the Class of ‘58, Class of ‘63, and the Class of ‘73. The Association made pennants for each of their tables as a thank you for selecting the raffle as part of their reunion venue. The overwhelm-ing compliment heard from these class members was that they had an eventful fun-packed evening at a cost figure lower than they could obtain on their own, and it was accomplished with almost no work on their part. Not a bad way to go!! Because each class arranged their own informal evening together on Friday night, they felt they had the best of both worlds at a highly reasonable cost. Contact any member of the Executive Board or e-mail the Association to get information on how you can utilize this service for your next class reunion!! Also, the lead time for this format is much shorter than the traditional reunion process. The Staff Hall of Fame inductees once again were impacted by the tremendous reception they received. They felt a genuine sense of appreciation for all they had given in the past to the Mayfield student body. Each inductee was intro-duced by an individual with whom they were personally and professionally close. Continued on p. 8

...Reminiscing cont. from p. 6 Our first inductee, Dutch Schmidt, was introduced by Daryl Sanders, ‘59. Dutch taught physical education and coached football for much of his professional career. He then became high school principal until his retirement. Daryl played football for Mayfield when Dutch was head coach and later played for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Detroit Lions. The mutual respect these two men have for each other is hard to match. Dutch, ironically, was the only inductee who did not graduate from May-field, although two of his children, Steve, ’72 and Brad, ’74 did. Rick Miner, ’44, was then introduced by a for-mer Staff Hall of Fame inductee, Chick Beach. Rick taught social studies, coached and became junior high principal before moving on to become Superintendent of the Chardon Schools. These two gentlemen also have a very close relationship with one another. Next, Barb Pfender, ’60, was introduced by John Moore, former elementary principal and Assistant Superintendent at Mayfield. Barb who taught at Center Elementary, was surrounded by many members of her family as she was inducted. Barb is also president of the Mayfield Retirees. John likes to do things in pairs. This was the second time he introduced an inductee and the second time he made it to the final five in the reverse raffle. Don’t you get the feeling that John would like to do this on an annual ba-sis? Our final inductee was Mike Niland, ‘63. Mike was introduced by the humorous Bill Hunt, former Mathemat-ics Department Chairman. Mike taught mathematics, including honors and Advanced Placement classes, at the high school throughout his entire career.

Second Memorabilia Night Planned for This Spring
The Alumni Association will be holding a second Memo-rabilia Night this year. It’s scheduled for the evening of May 17th, at 6:30 p.m. As usual, the Association will provide food and beverages for those alums who at-tend. We will be sorting through many pictures and arti-cles. There are several other tasks that need to be done, including laying out a design for some cabinets that were given to us. Once we decide where to put them, we may find that we need some countertops as well. So, if you’re not busy on May 17th, come over to the Alumni Museum (little red school house at SOM and Wilson Mills Rd.) to give us a hand. We could always use the help.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
We are pleased to acknowledge the following individuals for joining the Mayfield Alumni Association. Whether re-ferred by a classmate, friend, or relative, the Alumni As-sociation continues to grow and has become stronger with their participation. A lifetime membership to the Alumni Association is only $25. It is the surest way to be located by your class reun-ion committee and stay up-to-date on your alma mater’s activities. Also, it becomes much easier to participate in Association events. Remember, there is no fee for those alumni who are over 65 years old. Also, married Mayfield graduates can join for the same $25 lifetime fee. Please feel free to clip the registration form from this newsletter and give it to a fellow alum. If you have any questions regarding membership, you may contact us at: [email protected]

An outstanding turnout of 96 players on August 3, 2003 at Grantwood Golf Course tested their skills to win the 4-man scramble tournament. This year’s prizes were paid to the top four low scorers. Three scores were tied so the money was split three ways for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th. First place team—Gary Stamper, Terry Kelly, Lenny Fiore, Matt Bartiz were 12 under par for a score of 59. The next three finishers were tied. They included the teams of: Mike Farinacci, Ralph Snelson, Rob Scarmuzzi, and Scott Canupp; Brian Stofko, Matt Gaspar, John Gaspar, and Bill Sassano; and Ken Rhodes, Don Brown, Charlie Davis and Tony Pallante. Proximity (closest to the pin) cash prizes were won by Bo Fioritto, Don Snyder, Tony Pallante, and Dale Garris. Long drive cash prizes were won by Mickey Margolis and Rob Scarmuzzi.
