    From the MayorGreetings,

    Bienvenidos a la Fiesa

    de Santa Fe! Welcome to

    Americas oldest

    continuing

    community

    festival.

Fiesa de SantaFe was esalishedon Sept. 16, 1712,

by a proclamationissued by cityofficials to

commemorateand honor a pledge made by Don

Diego de Vargas in 1692 to theBlessed Virgin Mary.

Please join us in celebrating thispledge as we gather on the historicSanta Fe Plaza, the commercial, social and political center ofSanta Fe since 1610 when it wasesalished by Don Pedro dePeralta.

    Its a center that symbolizes

so much of what makes Santa Fegreat, the place where al cultures

come together.Santa Fesinos have long been

proud of their citys heritagedeveloped through the merging ofthe Native American, Spanish, andMexican cultures. The evolvementandsettlement of SantaFe has

produced a tradition of colorfulmusic, vibrant dance and song, together with a spirit of frienlineshospitality and acceptance. Thisencompasses what the Fiesa deSanta Fe represents and seeks to

    preserve and perpetuate annualy.Our community

commemoration is observingits 298th year in 2010. Today, descendants of the orginial settlerare keeping the promise of Don

    Diego de Vargas.

by Don Diego de Vargas to the Blessed Virgin Mary in1692.

I invite everyone to join our religious traditions at the Fiesa Mass,Canlelight Mass and Procession on Sunday (Sept. 12).

Pita Tapia Gonzales served as La Reina from 1943 to 1944. Here she holds a photo of herself from the sumeof 1944 at hehome in Santa Fe.

    By Jon Swad

When Pita Tapia Gonzales served as

La Reina de la Fiesa in 1943, Fiesa

de Santa Fe included a few important

    differences from the present day.

Though the religious celebrations at the

heart of the Fiesa de Santa Fe remain the

same as when Gonzales was La Reina, the

Fiesa that year also bore the unmistakale

    stamp of World War II.

The face of Zozobra was a combination

of Hitler, Mussolini and the Japanese

leader, Hirohito, Gonzales said. It was

    very interesting.

The effigys face was made up ofEmperor Hirohitos eyes and teeth,Mussolinis nose and chin and Hitlersmustache, Gonzales recaled.

Meanwhile, the Historical/HystericalParade lacked floats that year because of

gasoline rationing. We didnt realy have floats, so we rod

in convertile cars that had been lent outby a few of the local dealerships, Gonzalesaid.

When she took on the role of La ReinaGonzales was a 17-year-old who hadrecently completed her schooling at theLoretto Academy an al-girls Catholic

boarding school that later merged with

A lifetime of serviceForecourt mebers reinisce about the signifcance of Fiesa

    It was a beautiful,

    memorale experience

    that, deep in my heart,

from the beginningto end, I enjoyed.

    It was very enlightening

    for me.

    St. Michaels HighSchool.

Decades later,Gonzales is theoldest living LaReina de Santa Fe.

Yet Gonzales saidshe remembersher time as part of

the Royal Courtalmost as if it were

    yeserday.It was a

beautiful, memoraleexperience that, deep in my heart, from the beginningto end, I enjoyed,Gonzales said. Itwas very enlightening for me.

Gonzales said that when she served asLa Reina, her coronation took place atFort Marcy Park on the Friday night whenZozobra was burned.

We were standing on top of the hilat Fort Marcy (after the coronation),and when they lit Zozobra al the smokefloated over toward us, Gonzales said, laughing. So, that coronation was notrepeated.

Gonzales went on to serve as Santa FeCounty clerk from 1968-1972.

In fact, several former members of theFiesa de Santa Fes Royal Court have goneon to careers in pulic service, including

New Mexico Democratic Party chairmanJavier Gonzales (Don Diego de Vargas,1999), and Santa Fe City CouncilorsRon Trujilo (Don Diego, 1994) andCarmichael Dominuez (Don Diego,2000).

Dominuez, a 1988 graduate of Santa Fe

High School, said his experience serving asDon Diego de Vargas led him to becomemore connected to his hometown.

When you have the oportunity toportray Don Diego ... it realyeaks toyour commitment to the community,

Dominuez said. Ive been involved in thecommunity for a long time, and for me,serving as Don Diego led me to eventualy

become a city councilor. But for otherpeople who serve, it leads them to becomemore involved in the community in otherways.

For Carla Aragon, the 1974 La Reina dela Fiesa, portraying La Reina meant doingher part to keep local cultural traditionsalive.

Growing up in Santa Fe, it was realy anhonor to represent the Santa Fe Fiesas,

Aragon said. And again, its not a beautypageant: Its a celebration of the culturehere and the religion here ... It realy helpedme define who I was as a Hispanic growingup in Santa Fe.

Aragon went on to a three-decadecareer in TV broadcasting, serving asthe nightly news anchor at KOB-TV inAbuquerque from 1994 through 2007,after an 11-year stint at KNBC-TV inLos Angeles.

Since leaving the news desk, Aragonhas focused her attention on writing

childrens books. Her debut effort, Danceof the Egshells: Baile de los Cascarones a

bilinual childrens book was pulishedby The University of New Mexico Press inMarch.

The Baile de los Cascarones is atraditional dance sponsored by LaSociedad Foklorica that occurs each yearin Santa Fe to mark the end of Lent.

It is one of my favorite traditions and Igrew up going to the dances, Aragon said.I fiured, why not write a childrens bookand make it entertaining, because it wil bethe young kids who wil end up caryingon the tradition.

Its this desire to keep local traditionsalive that has motivated so many SantaFeans to serve on the Royal Court, both inthe past and in the present.

Daniele Chavez: I waslucky enough to serve as

    very young age.

FG: What made you decide torun for the position of La Reinade la Fiesa at this years Fiesade Santa Fe?

DC: It was al about timing forme. I always wanted to do itsooner rather than later, but Ialso knew that I wanted to getschool done with first, so thatI could give being La Reina myful-time attention.

FG: 2012 wil be the 300thFiesa de Santa Fe. As weaproach that date, whatsignificance do you see theFiesa de Santa Fe having in the

    present-day context?

    DC: Its just this amazing

tradition that the FiesaCouncil and the (city) have

been ale to uphold for althese years ... Fiesa de Santa Feis the oldest ongoing traditionin the United States, so itmeans a lot and Im honored

just to be a part of that.

FG: Whats your goal duringyour time as La Reina?

DC: I think its important toeducate people, not only youth

but also people who are visitingour city, who are not aware ofthe history of Fiesa.

FG: Do you have a favoriteFiesa de Santa Fe memory?

DC: Ive always enjoyedattending visitations that thewhole Royal Court would do.Its realy amazing to see the

    Whether apreciated through the lens

of history or from the perective of

its symbolic power in the annual Fiesa

de Santa Fe celebrations, Don Diego de

Vargas reconquest of Santa Fe in 1692

stands out as an exceptional event.

As in years past, this years 298th annualFiesa de Santa Fe wil celebrate de Vargas

return to the city, with festivities unfoldingfrom Sept. 4-12.

The Fiesa de Santa Fe, reputed to bethe longest-running annual tradition inthe United States, wil see Santa Feansand visitors alike descend on downtownfor a crowded schedule of events that payhomage to the return of the settlers afterthe Puelo Revolt of 1680.

Viewed from a historical vantage point,de Vargas return proved to be a pivotalmoment in terms of the Spanish Crown

    re-esa

lishing a presence in New Mexico, which at the time constituted a remote, northern outpost.

The reconquest materialized onSept. 13, 1692, when de Vargas and a

party of Spaniards negotiated a tensepeace with the Puelo Indians who hadoccupied Santa Fe for more than a decadefolowing the Puelo Revolt, which saw

New Mexicos colonial government drivento exile in El Paso.

One day later, on Sept. 14, 1692,Franciscan priests who had traveled with

de Vargas to Santa Fe celebrated Massin the citys Plaza, baptizing childrenwho had been born in the intervening

years between the Puelo Revolt and thereconquest.

The Spanish resettlement of NewMexico had beun.

de Santa Fe) is the core of the promisemade by Don Diego, and thats what weuphold to this day. As the Fiesa continuesto exist, it wil continue to exist in thatform.

De Vargas peaceful reconquest ofthe city in 1692, however, stands inmarked contrast to an otherwise loodyepoch characerized by clashes betweenSpaniards and Puelo Indians.

The Puelo Revolt, which saw heavycasualties and the destruction of theSpanish settlement in Santa Fe, was

folowed by a failed Spanish reconquest in1681 and loody Spanish incursions into

New Mexico at Santa Ana Puelo in 1687and Zia Puelo in 1689.

Despite the peaceful nature of deVargas September 1692 reconquest ofSanta Fe, peace did not last long. De

Vargas ultimately returned to El Paso inDecember of 1692, determined to returnand resettle the city with Spanish familiesin tow the folowing year.

However, the arival of de Vargas anda party of Spanish settlers in Santa Fein December 1693, though welcomed

by some Puelo Indians, was met withresistance by many of Santa Fes Indianinhabitants.

After a two-week standoff, around70 Indian wariors who refused tosurender to the Spanish were executed.

Yet this loody history arualy makesthe peaceful reconquest of 1692 more

significant because the event marks acornerstone upon which a more multi-cultural community was slowly built inSanta Fe in the centuries folowing de

Vargas return. It is a more genuinely multicultural

community than a lot of other places,Lovato said of Santa Fe. And when you

compare us to other parts of the worldwhere people have been unale to getalong with each other for thousands of

years, what we have in Santa Fe is prettysignificant.

I mean, its not al roses here, but peoplehave managed in some way to reectother people and their beliefs. I think thatsthe thing that intriues people when they

    visit.

With this in mind, Lovato said theFiesa Council is looking for new waysto communicate the message of peace atthe center of Fiesa de Santa Fe festivitieseecialy as the tricentennial celebrationof the reconquest aproaches in 2012.

While the traditions of Fiesa de SantaFe remain rooted in Masses, processions, and events such as La Merienda theFiesa weekend fashion show the FiesCouncil has been exploring new, web-

based media as a way to educate peopleabout the Fiesa de Santa Fe.

In fact, Fiesa de Santa Fe has pages onFacebook, MySpace, Twitter and Flickr, and the Fiesa Council has been exploringweb-based advertising in an attempt tofind and educate new audiences.

Its a way for people who live in anothepart of the country or the world to learnabout Fiesas, and its a way for natives tostay connected to whats going on, Lovato

said.Even in a web-based age, however,de Vargas achievement of the loolessreconquest of Santa Fe remains the kerneof hope that gives the annual Fiesa deSanta Fe celebrations their driving force.

In thanksgiving for their return, theearlier settlers promised to pay homage tothe Virgin Mary a promise they have

    been fulfiling for centuries.

Theres a bad uy out there. City officials have been lookingfor him for years. According to the warant for his arest,

hes wanted for scaring the kids and making the dogs of

Santa Fe howl al night. This is one bad dude.

Zozobra, aka Old Man Gloom, could be hiding out in the backof your favorite hardware store. Or sitting brazenly at a tale atthe local pizza joint. Chances are youve spotted him already. And

you didnt even know it, did you?Every year Zozobra, a giant marionette of sorts, goes up in

flames, taking with him the gloom and sadness of the past yearand unofficialy ushering in Fiesa de Santa Fe.

This uys a master of disuise. He could be anywhere. Thing

is, you dont realy know youre looking at him until youre staringhim right in the eye, and by then its too late.

Ray Valdez, a builder by trade, has been in charge of bringing inthis 50-foot tyrant since 1994.

I start out at the local hardware stores in the early summer, said Valdez, 45. Ive got a whole shoping list wood, wire, nails, screws, duct tape, puleys, pizza pans, stuff like that.

south side of town. There, it takes a smalarmy of volunteers about 57 days to make

Old Man Gloom a bit more presentale forhis nearing execution.

Zozobra has made some futile attemptsto alter his identity in the past his haircolor changes year after year; he oftensports a different tie but to no avail.

We try to ad a few different thingseach year,Valdez said. Hes only had

pupils in his eyes for the past few years. This year, weve got a few more surprisesin mind.

A lot of those changes are in the handsof Ray Sandoval, main pyrotechncianl

and head artist for the event,Valdez said.It was his idea for Zozobra to wear that

patterned tie a few years back. But getting Zozobra, who weighs in at a

whoping 1,700 pounds, to the scene of hisdemise is no simple feat.

It takes a couple of flat-bed trucks, massivemachinery and some long hours to getOld

MadGloom ready for hisswan song.Theres a lot of trepidation, a lot of

anxiety in the days leading up to the burn,Valdez said. I cant realy relax until hesup there.

And then theres the waiting waitingto see if Septembers fickle rains wilrage into town a few hours before the

burn. Suden downpours can ad about900 pounds to the beast and can slowZozbras burn time to a steady crawl.

Rain or shine, every year Zozobra goesdown in a moaning, flailinglaze of glory, shaking his fist at the crowd to the bitterend. Valdez said at least 25,000 people

have attended the event in the past.We had film teams over here doing

documentaries for the Discovery Channel, for the Travel Channel,Valdez said.Weve had national coverage, stories inThe New York Times and in The Wall Street

Journal. This whole thing just kind ofexploded last year.

Valdez said he has been witness to theexecution of Old Man Gloom for a long a

he can remember.Ive been going to the burn since I was

a kid, he said. I think I missed it maybeonce in my life.

Today, he doesnt get to watch the burnlike he did when he was a kid. Now hes

behind the scenes, keeping things runningsmoothly throughout the night.

I just cant leave his side until thewhole thing is over,Valdez said. This ha

become my life and my summers, al ofthem. I always ask people to wake me upagain when Septembers over.

And a few months later the processbegins al over again. Weve havent seenthe last of Zozobra. Hel be back next ye

The sones and the canciones that only the

The evening has been dubed Mariachi Extravaganzade Santa Fe, because several mariachi groups, includingMariachi Mujer 2000, Mariachi Sol de Mexico and SantaFes own Mariachi Buenaventura, also wil perform.

Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitln, like Santa Fes history,is created from a fusion of European and indigenoustraditions and talents. The mariachi group was formedin Jalisco, Mexico, in 1898 by four musicians and led byGaspar Vargas and later by his son, Silvestre Vargas.

Under Silvestres uidance, the mariachi made itselfknown and competed against the most popular orchestrasin Mexico by combining 10 instruments: a harp, four

violins, a trumpet and four different types ofuitars:uitarn, vihuela, uitara and uitara de golpe. Silvestrealso hired a trained musician, Ruben Fuentes, to be the

groups musical director. Fuentes composed many piecesthat gave Mariachi Vargas stelar recognition in the

Perhaps to make up for lost years,

this creature the crocodile with fur, so

I am not sure this is the best plan.

However, he is probaly not the onlyadult considering a first entry into thePet Parade this year. The popularity of

the adorale event has caused it to growdramaticaly.

Last year, the Desfile de los Niosincluded 1,112children, 658 adults, andan uncountale number of dogs, felines,

bunnies, pigs, poultry and other creaturesgreatand smal. Perhaps in these trouledeconomic times, peoplehave turned more tothe catharsis offered by cuteness than by the

political mockery found in the Historical/Hysterical Parade. Of course, the Desfile de laGente continues to be a popular Fiesa event, drawing as it does on the creativity andflairfor satire enjoyed by many SantaFeans.

Unfortunately, as a kid I missed out on

participating in the Pet Parade because ofsoccer pracice, track meets or the generawildness of our pets. I did enjoy watchingthe Historical/Hysterical Parade withmy parents, and with friends when I gotolder. One year we found a prime positionon a rooftop downtown, and I clearlyremember being perched on the ledge, legswinging freely in the hot sun, watchingthe ectacle below.

The Fiesa parades have inspiredcountless memories for Santa Feans overthe years. The perective and scope ofthese memories differ greatly from personto person, as have their own unique role.

    The politician

State Rep. Brian Egolfhas fond memories of theHistorical/Hysterical Paradeover the years. In particular,he remembers the first yearhe attended as a campaigner. It was my first experience inhandshaking retail politics. Ourcampaign had a float and I hadthe best time, he said.

But it ended up being a bitof a trial by fire. Egolf had notfuly considered the logistics

of stoping to tak to peopleduring a moving parade. To hisdismay, he realized that as he

paused for conversations, hisfloat would gain consideraledistance on him, and he waswearing cowboy boots.

So, I was foolishly runningalong the entire three-mile

route, or however long itwas, to catch up sprintingto catch our float, he said, laughing.

For anyone who hasnt runlong distances in cowboy boots

on a warm September day, itcan be rather uncomfortale.I was so hot and out of breath,I thought I was probalyconvincing people not to votefor me. It turned out welfor Egolf though, and he wasrewarded when people thankedhim for his efforts. One votertold me, My grandad met

but getting to participate in it isa treat. Pojoaque native AliciaBustos recaled participating

    The veterinarianYears before she would

While the mental image ofthe tinylonde girl trying tocontrol the enormous whitedog is adorale, Vrabely wassufficiently thwarted fromfuture parades. I honestlydont even know if Ive been

In old Santa Fe we have La FiesaTis the time for singing, dance and play

On this day we do not take la siesaWhile Zozobra burns the gloom awaySteel uitars are softly strumming musicSeorita, come along with meLuminarias al are shining brightlyAt the baile, fancy costumes you wil seeSi Seor, como no, lets go out and have some funAnd wel see Santa Fe in Conquistadores way.
