spectable frequenters of the premises being constantly discommodedas well as disgusted. -

In such circumstances it will not be long before there is a demand for different accommodation for the various federal institulions. Honolulu will eventually reipiiro more than one federal building, and there seems no occasion now for extravagant outlay, or destructive condemnation, lo make a great park around a building, ofprobably only tonlativo charncler, which will be discounted in arcluk'clurul dignity by several private edifices overlooking it.

MARKET LETTER

OF HENRY CLEWS

New York, August 27, 1910.

The events of the past week werenot of a particularly stlmuuatlng char-

acter. The most Important cheek laa further rise In values was the prac-

tical opening of the political campaignon Issues which Inevitably excite moreor less uncertainty In business circles. It Is now settled that the tariff will beone of the leading Issues In the MttVIng campaign. It is doubtful If anyimportant changes In schedules willbe effected, but the disturbance whichtariff agitation always induces neoee-sarll- y

checks iultlatlve and postponesmany new commitments, it Is fiuss-tlonab- le,

however, If In the long runthe aggregate valume of business willsuffer thereby, for rhauges lu the ta-

riff delay or derange rather thnn des-troy business. There Is also Bomsprospect of a revival of anti-corpor- a

tlon agitation; and, as the politicalcampaign will be waged with increas

Intensity the next two 140.116 asked themonths, It would cause no surprise If stock.the result was a temporary disturb-ance of Stock Exchange values.

Aside from politics, the situation Issomewhat conllictlug. The nroooasof readjustment in Industrial and com-

mercial nlfairs is making steady pro-gros-

and, though not by anymeans complotod, tho generalsituation can be accepted as safer andsounder in consequence of the rectifi-cation already accomplished. It lahardly to ho expected that tho deran-gements following so many yoars ofuninterrupted prosperity can ho satisfactorily adjusted in tho short spacoof sovon months. Novortholoss, thocountry Is making excellent progroes, not only lu recovering Its equilibriumbut In actual recuperation, Fortunately our crop outlook is bottor thana month ago. Corn has boon makingstendy progress during tho past weok, and the outlook for a JI.OOO.OOO.OOO

bushel crop Is fairly roasonablo, ifdamago by frost ho escaped. Cottonis nlso doing woll should, If frcofrom frost, turn out larger than atono time anticipated. It will bo ro- -

memborcd that wheat has already dis-

appointed tho pessimistic prediction of '

July. Thoro Is, therefore, now littleor no danger of crop failures, and thocountry Is almost cortnln of securinga fairly satisfactory harvest. Al-- .

though prices are frequently loworthan a year ngo thoy will yield goodprofits to farmers. This probably ox-- 1

plains the continued optimistic reportswhich como from tho West, that sec-

tion having steadily rofusod to sorlous-l- y

Liquidation hasnot only checked unhealthy specula-- 'tlon In tho Interior, but litis forced afreer marketing of crops which hadbeen held back for higher prlcos, Thiswas strikingly domonstrnted by thorecent largo Increase In grain receiptsat primary points compared with ayear ago. MARKET LETTER

OF HENRY

(Continued from pngo five.)

Prom now on, howovor, our oxportaof produco Bhould begin to Increase.Wheat Is still above an export basis, but tho outwnra cotton movoment willbegin as soon as tho bill of lading con-troversy is settled, and this should bean Important factor in our foroigntrndo, which is still in an abnormalcondition owing to largo Imports andrelatively small exports. The lntteraro steadily gaining, and conditionsnro becoming more favornblo to foreign purchases of both and raw andmanufactured products. At the sametime tho dullness oi business hero issure to check Importations, especiallyin view of the agitation for tho lowertariff. In this connection It Is worthyof note that during tho past sevenmonths our imports wore swelled bynn Increase of $2G,000,000 In rubbernnd $10,000,000 In sugar, these twoItems alone forming an Important partof our expansion In Imports.

( In manycases the Importations of textiles havefallen off decidedly as a result of dullbusiness and the now tariff rates. TheImports of rubber and sugar are alsolikely to decline.

General trade remains very quiet, and promises to so continue until thevacation period Is over. Tho subsequent prospects are for n fair recoveryafter tho recent stagnation; althoughtariff and nnti-trus- t agitations will notbo very helpful. The Iron " trade, while still depressed, already showssigns of partial rcvlvah Tho demandfor copper Is Improving, although thatIndustry is still In an unsatisfactoryposition. Other metals have not yetpassed through the process of readjustment which has taken place In ironnor has general business been. so tho-

roughly adjusted to now conditions asthe security market, which had prac-tically discounted all business reac-tion. It seems reasonable to look fora fair fall trade, but no extraordinaryactivity, and In many cases businesswill have to be conducted upon a scaleof diminished profits. Nevertheless, there is no sign for uneasiness in anypart of the commercial horizon. Evenpolitics may not disturb as seriouslyas many apprehend.

On the Stock Exchango a somewhatunsettled undertone prevails. Speculative conditions seem somewhat con-

flicting. The railroad problem isStill confusing and complicated by di-

minished net earnings, but a largetraffic Is fully anticipated this fall. Insome circles there is still a disposi-

tion to await the Supremo Court deci-

sions on oil and tobacco, etc., yet Itshould be borne In mind that recentchanges in the Supremo Court assurethe permanence of a conservative andJudicial spirit in that august body. The question as to whether the rail-

roads may or may not advance rateshas fortunately been postponed untilafter the elections, when tho Commis-

sioners will be ablo to handlq the pro-

blem free from the suspicion of play-

ing politics. Very soon numerous op-

erators will have returned from theirvacations, refreshed and Invigorated

HER MISTAKE

Elizabeth Austin sat in the little, dimly lighted bootii waitinc forher light luncheon (o be nerved when voices in the booth adjoiningcaught lier ear. Nio recognized the voices as belonging to two of heracquaintances, nnd she was about (o make her presence known whenshe heard her name pronounced. So she drew back and listened.

"Elizabeth's a dear if only she didn't have such ironclnd rules foreverything."

"I know it," assented the second voice. "Her library table is nn in-dex to her character. The magazines arc in such symmetrical pilesI never dare pick one up for fear I won't get k straight.

"One hates a slattern, of course; still, there is a happy medium.Take Mollie Stratton. Everything is so comfortable nnd cozy in herhouse."

Elizabeth drew a long breath, while the color rose to her face asshe tried to eat her luncheon. Her thoughts were by no means center-ed in resentment at the critics. She was absorbed in wondering if thecriticism was true. Was her house stilt and uncomfortable, and wasit not a home for Rollo? It was true that he never smoked, in thoreception room or living room, but then he had his big den, where healways retired for his pipe and received his friends.

She went home and looked anxiously about tiie house. Rollo. hadleft the matter of the furnishing entirely to her, and she had spent somuch time and thought on the selection and arrangement. Everythingwas substantial and in good taste, but for the first time it occurred toher that an easy air was lacking. She didn't know how to alter it.After much self-analys- is and meditation she determined upon a plan. She would pay iI.ollie Stratton that much-urge- long-deferre- d visitand learn from an inspection of her house how to make it homelikefor Rollo. Her plan was made easier by the announcement of her hus-band at dinner that he would have to be away for a week on busi-ness. Elizabeth casually mentionC'd that it would be a good opportun-ity for her to visit Mollie.

"Why, yes," he said, seeming much pleased with the proposition."I'll come home that way, and you can return with me."

Elizabeth telephoned Mollie, who was delighted at the prospectof a visit from Rollo's wife.

"Don't look into the corners," warned Mollie, on Elizabeth's ar-rival. "I have heard what a perfect housekeeper you are. I am onlyjust a comfortable one."

"And I "have heard," replied Elizabeth, smiling, what a perfecthomekeeper you were, which, I am sure, is much more to be desiredthan to be a housekeeper.

"Well, they do call my house Liberty hall," admitted Mollie, laugh-ing. "We live all over the house, and every one does as he pleases, when he pleases and where he pleases."

"Which is very evident," thought Elizabeth; as her surveying eyenoted the cigar ashes on the library table, a child's playthings in thehall, a man's overcoat on a chair in the reception room and a pack ofcards strewn over the floor.

She made mental notes and even written ones of Mollie's arrangement of things. She contrasted the Avails hung with myriads of pic-tures, like an artist's studio, with the few, well-chose- n pictures onher walls. The mantels, resembling shelves in a curio shop, made therecollection of her own, with their few rare pieces, seem bare. Inplace of her mahogany davenports Mollie had chosen divans, whichwere heaped with all sorts and conditions of pillows. Ash receiversand match receptacles were everywhere in evidence.
