The legend of King Arthur is an enduring one, retold in its va-rious forms for hundreds of years, though even ancient histo-rians considered it nothing more than a myth. But in the twelfthcentury, evidence surfaced suggesting that Arthur might havebeen more than a mere legend.

In the year 1190, the monks of Glastonbury Abbey in Englandannounced an incredible discovery. Shortly before his death,King Henry II (AD 1133-1189) had informed them of a long-keptsecret of the royal family: King Arthur’s remains were buried inthe churchyard of St. Dunstan in Glastonbury. Upon excavating the indicated area, the searchers unearthed a massive oak trunk, buried sixteen feet deep,just as Henry had described. Inside was a human skeleton.It was absolutely gigantic. It appeared to be much taller thanan average man, and the space between the eye sockets wasas wide as the palm of a man’s hand. Apparently, the famo-us king was truly larger than life. The skeleton was not alone in its coffin. Alongside it was a second, lying next toa plait of blonde hair. The identities of the two remains were described on an archaic lead cross which was foundnearby – a Latin inscription named the occupants of the cof-fin as the renowned King Arthur and his queen, Guinevere.

The discovery was very timely. In 1184, the monastic building and church of Glastonbury had been burnt to theground in a fire, leaving the monks in serious financial trouble. However, if an abbey were in possession of a sac-red relic, people would visit from far and wide to see piecesof the cross, clothes and objects of the saints… and bones.King Arthur was not a religious figure, but as one of the foremost heroes in legendary history, his remains could attract a great number of medieval tourists. Indeed, peoplestarted f locking to Glastonbury from the surrounding regions, and few questioned the authenticity of the find.The Abbey soon became wealthy from the offerings givenby those who made the pilgrimage.

The medieval historian, Gerald of Wales described thediscovery of King Arthur’s grave. Beside his report writtenin about 1193, there were several other versions of the disco-very of the grave, each a bit different from the others, andthis inconsistency in the details of the story strongly suggeststhat the grave of King Arthur might have been an elaboratehoax, designed to generate pilgrim traffic to the abbey.

Unfortunately the bones went missing centuries ago,so the evidence cannot be examined using modern tech-niques. They probably didn’t survive the dissolution ofthe abbey by Henry VIII during the English Reformationin 1539. The burial cross did, though. It was last reportedin the possession of an official of Wells Cathedral, some-time in the early eighteenth century.

Zadanie 1.Willie Cooma is used to creating a stir when he makes

his way across the Australian Outback. He has taken this jo-urney many times and knows the sight of his camel-drawnwagon leading a group of 15 camels along a state highwaycan stop traffic. He’s done about 45,000km by camel in thepast 15 years, going on the road for months at a time.

I’m joining Willie Cooma for a five-day camel safari thatcovers 70km of spectacular Outback country. The first eve-ning, while he’s making pancakes on a smouldering cam-pfire, he watches his camels chewing the nearby bush. “Ca-reful with Benny over there,” he says, “he’ll eat anything hecan get hold of.” Benny is one of four camels on our safari.He’s eaten everything from unattended bags of rice, loavesof bread and plastic bags to books, soap, and even a came-ra. Willie got him from a family who had raised him as a pet.He was allowed inside their house so he thinks he’s human.Willie must constantly keep an eye on him.

Known as “the Camel Man”, Willie knows a lot about theanimals. He tells us there is no such thing as a bad-tempe-red camel. It’s all in the way they’re treated. Of course, theyall have different personalities, but Willie’s camels are al-ways mild-mannered. He’s trained them not to spit or bite.He guides his four camels forward with a series of com-mands and we’re all amazed because two of the camels, bothcalled Benny, respond individually to his orders. They se-em to know instinctively which Benny he is referring to.

Willie’s had a rich and colourful life. After training asa chef in Singapore, he spent 25 years working with top chefsaround the world. Then he decided he couldn’t stand overa stove for the rest of his life, and returned to Australia, whe-re he ended up on a camel farm. He spent long periods cat-ching up to 150 wild camels at a time and training them forwork. Several of those camels are now working with him atthe safaris.

Bist du ein umweltfreundlicher Mensch?Ute (18): Es ist schwer, auf diese Frage eine eindeutige

Antwort zu geben. Ich glaube schon, aber bestimmt könnte

ich für die Umwelt mehr tun. Jeden Tag sortiere ich den Müllvor. Neben meinem Haus stehen vier Abfalltonnen, also wer-fe ich den Hausmüll in die dafür bestimmte Tonne. DieseTätigkeit scheint mir nichts Besonderes zu sein, weil das jeder Bürger tut. Ich spare Wasser, indem ich mir beim zugedrehten Wasserhahn Zähne putze und nie länger alssieben Minuten Dusche nehme. Dadurch verbraucht manwesentlich weniger Wasser. Deswegen auch habe ich keineBadewanne, die ist ein Wasserfresser. Und das wäre alles,denke ich mir.

Monika (17): Ich bin ein typischer Umweltfeind, so sagenmeine Eltern. Ehrlich gesagt spielt die Umwelt keine Rolle inmeinem Leben. Ich kann sowieso nichts ändern, wozu alsosollte ich mich bemühen, ökologisch zu denken? Das nervt,kostet Zeit und hat dazu noch keinen Sinn. Ich bin auch derMeinung, dass viele Jugendliche nur vormachen, dass sie sichum die Umwelt kümmern. Es ist zurzeit „in“. Und das nenneich Hypokrisie.

Leon (17): Ich habe einen Ökoclub an meinem Gymnasiumgegründet. Wir sind schon über 30 Mitglieder. Unsere Schulleitung unterstützt uns und steht immer zur Verfügung,wenn wir etwas vorhaben. Mit ihrer Hilfe organisiere ich alsVorsitzender des Clubs verschiedene Veranstaltungen undTreffen. Letztens haben uns die Greenpeace-Aktivisten be-sucht und eine Rede über das Ozonloch und den Treibhausef-fekt gehalten. Sie haben mir sehr viele Flugblätter gegebenund die habe ich dann in einer Fußgängerzone an alle Vor-beigehenden verteilt. Es ist sehr wichtig, die Menschen auf-zuklären. Manche sind sich einfach dessen nicht bewusst, wiesie zu dem Umweltschutz beitragen könnten. Meine Rolle besteht darin, dass ich sie bewusst mache.

Dirk (20): Ich fahre hauptsächlich Rad und wenn es seinmuss, z.B. wegen des schlechten Wetters fahre ich mit der U-Bahn oder mit der Straßenbahn.

Da die Abgase die Luft verschmutzen, sollten die Autofahrer wenigstens das bleifreie Benzin gebrauchen, wenn sieschon das Auto fahren müssen und es natürlich in einem dafürvorgesehenen Platz waschen. Auf keinen Fall im Garten oderim Wald. Ich kann nicht verstehen, warum viele Menschenso leichtsinnig handeln. Wir sind doch alle mitverantwortlich.Ich kaufe auch nur Produkte, die mit dem grünen Punkt ge-kennzeichnet sind. Da habe ich die Gewissheit: die sind um-weltfreundlich. Man sollte mehr Wert auf die Verpackung le-gen und nur die Ware in Mehrwegflaschen und Papiertütenkaufen. Plastik und Blech zerfallen ja jahrelang. Aber darumkümmern sich nicht zu viele Kunden.

Robert Sterngives a brilliant performance as her cruel father but cannot ma-ke up for such a poor script. TWO ‘Wonderful Memories’There’s nothing in ‘Wonderful Memories’ that we haven’t se-en before. Martin Elfman has packed his film with clichés andborrowed ideas and still he manages to take romantic melodra-ma in new directions. The viewer can’t help but feel enchantedby the tranquil atmosphere and breathtaking beauty of theWelsh landscape. The young cast are spontaneous and plea-sant to look at, even if not completely sure of themselves. THREE ‘Jock the Gator’Set on an exotic coral island, with characters funnier and mo-re convincing than live actors, and – above all – with its absolu-tely marvellous story line, ‘Jock the Gator’ is my personal Oscarcandidate for animated feature film. The music could perhapsbe a little more original, but otherwise I can see no flaws in thisgenuinely gripping and heart-warming story of adventure andfriendship.FOUR ‘Dark Side II’It’s extremely rare for a sequel to be better than the original, al-though the first film was so awful that it’s not really that muchof a surprise in this case. ‘Dark Side II’ uses the same tricks withghosts jumping out of the TV screen every few minutes, but it’sundoubtedly more enjoyable, thanks to good acting and skil-fully written script. It’s perfectly watchable but if you just geta CD with the soundtrack, you’ll have the best of it. FIVE ‘Another Body’‘Another Body’ is a combination of comedy and zombie horrorwith witty dialogues and an excellent performance from Sig Nor-man. A weird blend of suspense, surrealism and bizarre dialogu-es – the film has as many enemies as admirers. I found it hilariousand entertaining despite a few weaknesses of the script. The filmis well made and superbly acted, which makes it an absolute treat.

Pamplona hardly ever passes without somebody being hurt,and last Monday was no exception. Eight people were taken tohospital, two of them seriously injured. A 32-year-old womanhad received a deep horn wound on her leg, a 20-year-old mansuffered broken arm and ribs, and six others were treated forminor cuts and bruises. Fortunately, no one was gored out ofthe few hundreds who took part in the early morning run.

The annual San Fermin festival, or the Pamplona bull run-ning, as it is more commonly known outside Spain, is the on-ly one of its kind. At eight in the morning for eight summerdays in a row, large numbers of risk-lovers run in front of a packof wild bulls through the narrow, twisting streets of Pamplo-na. The festival draws tourists from around the world, mostwearing traditional all-white clothes with a red scarf aroundthe neck, ready to risk death on the horns of a bull in a crazyfour-minute run.

The festival has its origins in the Middle Ages. There is evi-dence from as far back as the 13th century of a two-day religiousevent which then took place in October. The joining together ofreligious, commercial and bullfighting festivals and moving it toJuly led to the first official celebration in Pamplona in 1591. Thisfiesta was a low-key affair in comparison to the modern day run-ning of the bulls. Over the next few years, the festival lost someof its primary religious focus, dancing and fireworks became do-minant features, and the event was extended to over a week.

The bull running was made world famous by Ernest Hemin-gway. His novel ”The Sun Also Rises” includes an account ofhis visit to the festival with a group of British and Americanfriends in the 1920s. The event has become so enormously po-pular that overcrowding is a serious problem nowadays.

Despite its huge popularity, the festival attracts a lot of cri-ticism. Last Saturday, dozens of animal rights activists helda protest in Pamplona by lying on the ground along the courseof the bull running.

Polen viel Wert auf den Karneval legt. Hier wird der wirklichgefeiert.

Am populärsten ist der Kölner Karneval, während des-sen der größte Karnevalsumzug in Deutschland stattfindet.An dem so genannten Rosenmontagszug beteiligen sich viele Musikkapellen, Reiter, festlich bedeckte Wagen undMenschen in Kostümen. Der seit 1823 organisierte Umzugwird immer von vielen Zuschauern begleitet. In letzter Zeitbeträgt die Zahl der Gäste über eine Million. Viele von ihnenwerden mit kleinen Geschenken und Süßigkeiten beworfen.

Der Rosenmontagszug startet am Chodwigplatz, geht an demweltbekannten Kölner Dom vorbei und endet in der Mohren-straße.

Erlebenswert ist auch die Weiberfastnacht, eine Feier, die amDonnerstag vor dem Aschenmittwoch meist um 11:11 beginnt.An diesem Tag wird ab Mittag nicht gearbeitet, sondern in denKneipen und auf den Straßen gefeiert. Charakteristisch für diese Feier ist auch der Brauch, dass die Frauen den Männernihre Krawatten abschneiden. Damit verlieren die Männer ihreMacht. Damit es aber mehr einem Spiel ähnlich ist, bekommendie Herren einen Kuss als Entschädigung.

Zadanie 1.TinaIch besuche ein öffentliches Gymnasium in meiner Klein-

stadt. Um ehrlich zu sein, muss ich zugeben, dass das Niveaudes Unterrichts nicht immer besonders hoch ist. Da ich davonträume, Ärztin zu werden, muss ich sehr gut Chemie und Bio-logie beherrschen. Mit Bio habe ich Probleme. Der Lehrer fehltoft und wenn er da ist, versucht er ganz schnell den Stoff nach-zuholen. Für mich macht er das zu schnell. Dann wende ichmich an meine Nachbarin, die sich in Biologie gut auskennt,und sie erklärt mir alle Problemstellen. So sieht mein Nachhil-feunterricht aus. Um mich bei ihr zu bedanken, mähe ich ihrden Rasen oder führe ihre Hunde aus. Zum Glück verlangt sievon mir kein Geld, denn das könnten sich meine Eltern leidernicht leisten.

MonikaNachhilfe wäre mir zu teuer. Für manche Schüler ist es ein

Muss, aber glücklicherweise schaffe ich den ganzen Schul-kram ohne fremde Hilfe. Ja, ich kann sogar sagen, dass ich denanderen oft helfe, wenn sie Probleme mit Mathe haben. Ich bin ziemlich begabt, wenn es um exakte Fächer geht. Ichlasse meine Klassenkameraden nie abschreiben, das finde ichunfair, aber sie können mich immer um Hilfe bitten, sobaldsie merken, dass sie etwas nicht verstehen. Sie sind der Meinung, ich kann gut erklären. Ich bin also eine kostenloseNachhilfelehrerin für die Schüler aus meiner Klasse. Und diemeisten wissen das zu schätzen. Sonst müssten ihre Elterntief in die Tasche greifen.

EvaIch bin schon mal sitzen geblieben. Diese Situation darf sich

nicht wiederholen, deshalb bekomme ich Nachhilfe in Englischund Geschichte. Allein bin ich nicht in der Lage, mir den Stoffanzueignen. Mein Nachhilfelehrer ist ein ausgebildeter Päda-goge, der zwar teuer, aber sehr gut ist. Dank seiner Hilfe sindmeine Noten jetzt besser geworden. Ich schwitze nicht mehr

vor jeder Klassenarbeit in Geschichte und habe endlich ver-standen, worum es in der englischen Grammatik geht. Im vo-rigen Schuljahr hat meine ältere Schwester versucht mir zuhelfen. Das war eine totale Pleite, wir haben uns nur gestritten,weil sie mich immer wieder Dummkopf genannt hat. Sie wareine schreckliche Nachhilfelehrerin, ungeduldig, eingebildetund zerstreut. Mein aktueller Nachhilfelehrer ist nicht nur kompetent, sondern auch nett. Der Unterricht mit ihm machtmir wirklich Spaß.

PeterMich besucht donnerstags eine Germanistikstudentin. Ich

mag die Nachhilfe mit ihr, denn sie schreit nicht, gibt sich Mühemit mir, schafft eine lockere Atmosphäre und lässt mich aus-sprechen. Wir diskutieren viel über verschiedene Aspekte derdeutschen Literatur und sie scheint sich wirklich dafür zu interessieren, was ich zu sagen habe. Dieser Spaß hat seinen Preis, aber einer ausgebildeten Gymnasiallehrerein müsste ichdreimal so viel zahlen.

SvenIch mag keinen Einzelunterricht. Ich fühle mich gestresst, be-

obachtet. Deswegen habe ich auf die Nachhilfe in Französischmit einem Muttersprachler verzichtet. Jetzt besuche ich einenSprachkurs und habe Unterricht in einer Gruppe. Die Stimmungist viel besser. Bei individuellen Problemen kann ich mich im-mer während der Pause an den Lehrer wenden oder nach demUnterricht ein paar Minuten länger bleiben.

Zadanie 2.Kurz vor Weihnachten ist meine Familie in eine neue Woh-

nung gezogen. Bei dem Umzug hat uns die Transportfirma meines Onkels geholfen. Zum Glück wurde nichts beschädigtund es ist auch nichts verloren gegangen. Der Umzug ging schnell,obwohl die Wetterbedingungen schlecht waren. Es war sehr glattund die Möbelträger mussten wirklich aufpassen, um nicht auszurutschen. Wir mussten die alte Wohnung verlassen, weil siezu klein für uns geworden war. Ich habe nämlich einen Bruderbekommen und dann war zu wenig Platz für uns alle. Jetzt lebenwir in einem Neubau, im Erdgeschoss, wir haben eine Terrasseund ich habe endlich mein eigenes Zimmer. Davon habe ich solange geträumt. Aus meinem Zimmer habe ich einen schönenBlick auf einen in der Nähe gelegenen Park. Die Wohnsiedlung,in der wir wohnen, hat einen privaten Spielplatz und ein Fitnes-szentrum. Jeder Wohnungsbesitzer verfügt über einen Parkplatzin der Tiefgarage, also muss sich mein Vater keine Sorgen mehrum unseren Wagen machen. Der ist da jetzt sicher. Die einzigeSache, über die ich mich beschweren kann, ist das Alter der Nach-barn. Entweder sind das junge Ehepaare mit kleinen Kindernoder ältere Leute Mitte fünfzig. Ich bin noch keinem Gleichaltri-gen begegnet. Schade!!!

Meine Mutter vermisst ihr altes Schlafzimmer, aber meinemVater mangelt es an nichts. Er sagt, er ist mit der neuen Wohnungso zufrieden, dass er sich wieder jung und energievoll fühlt. Erscheint sogar zu vergessen, dass er jetzt jahrelang einen Kreditzurückzahlen muss.
